Mumbai: BJP starts ‘maafi maango’ agitation, targets MVA leaders

Accusing the Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders of making controversial remarks on the birthplace of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, the ruling ally Bharatiya Janata Party started its ‘maafi maang’ (Beg Forgiveness) demonstrations in Mumbai, here on Saturday.

The agitation is happening simultaneously as the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) and around 50 parties and groups also launched their mega-procession in south Mumbai on various issues.

State BJP President Chandrashekhar Bawankule, BJP Mumbai President Ashish Shelar, senior leader Pravin Darekar, and others are spearheading the protests along with thousands of party workers waving black flags and placards, raising slogans and condemning the Sena (UBT) at different places in the city.

They have condemned the Sena (UBT)’s attempts to raise doubts about the birthplace of Dr. Ambedkar, the Chief Architect of the Indian Constitution and champion of the depressed classes.

“We have sent Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut a couple of official publications authored by BJP MLC Bhai Girkar on the life of Dr. Ambedkar and urge him to read it to understand history… There are attempts to rewrite history and it is not acceptable to us. They must ask for forgiveness from the people,” said Shelar.

The BJP leaders also slammed the comments of Sena (UBT) Deputy Leader and firebrand orator Sushma Andhare for ridiculing Hindu Gods, saints, the Varkaris, etc, and demanded to know “why is Uddhav Thackeray keeping mum on all this”.

The MVA leaders like Raut and Congress state President Nana Patole have dismissed the BJP’s ‘maafi maango’ agitation as “laughable” and intended to throw a spanner in the Opposition parties’ mega-procession today.

Indian-American arrested for tossing newborn in Florida creek

0

An Indian-American woman has been charged with first-degree murder for tossing her newborn baby into a Florida inlet four years ago.

Arya Singh, 29, who was arrested on Thursday confessed to the crime saying, “she didn’t know what to do with her (baby)”, The New York Post said, quoting police officials.

“The baby’s body was found floating in the Boynton Beach inlet on June 1, 2018, after she had been disposed of “like a piece of trash”, Palm Beach Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said during a press conference.

“It tugs at your heart,” Bradshaw said. Singh told the police that she did not even realize she was pregnant until she gave birth.

“She didn’t know what to do with her and she still had her with her and she just decided that’s where she was going to dispose of her,” Detective Brittany Christoffel, who spearheaded the case, said.

The baby was believed to be alive when she was thrown into the ocean, the daily reported.

Investigators were unable to solve the case for several years until a relative turned up in a national DNA database, which led them to the baby’s father.

The father gave a DNA test and told investigators about a woman he was dating at the time. He said that Singh had then told him she was pregnant but took care of it.

The father assumed that meant an abortion, Christoffel said.

Investigators were able to grab covert DNA that belonged to Singh by picking up garbage she threw out, The New York Post reported.

Authorities named the baby “June” as she was found by an off-duty firefighter on the beach in June 2018.

Deepika Padukone getting trolled for ‘Besharam Rang’ is misogyny: Ramya

Kannada popular actress and former MP Ramya aka Divya Spandana have come out in support of Deepika Padukone after ‘Besharam Rang’, a song from the latter’s upcoming movie ‘Pathaan’, sparked a controversy.

The Hindutva activists across the country have raised objections to the song and stated that the attire of actors encourages love jihad.

Ramya, a lead actress who is making a comeback to the Kannada film industry after a long gap, has blamed misogyny for Deepika being trolled for clothes.

“Samantha trolled for her divorce. Sai Pallavi for her opinion, Rashmika for her separation, Deepika for her clothes, and many, many other women for pretty much ‘EVERYTHING’. Freedom of choice is our basic right. Women are the embodiment of Maa Durga- misogyny is as evil we must fight,” Ramya stated on her social media account.

Apart from producing Kannada movie ‘Swathi Muttina Male Haniye’, she will also be playing a prominent role in it.

Chetan Ahimsa, a Kannada actor and activist, had called opposition to ‘Besharam Rang’ song trivial.

On the other hand, Sri Rama Sena founder Pramod Muthalik had warned that if the song is not withdrawn, they will start the countrywide campaign for banning ‘Pathaan’.

The Adelaide International 2 boasts a stellar entry list, which includes the entirety of the WTA Tour’s Top 4, including World No.1 Iga Swiatek and No.2 Ons Jabeur.

World No.3 Jessica Pegula and WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia have also entered the WTA 500 event, which takes place during Week 2 of the new 2023 season and begins on January 9.

Notably, Adelaide 2 is the second leg of Adelaide’s Festival of Tennis, a two-week span that sees the city host back-to-back WTA 500 events at The Drive. The tournament is the last WTA 500 tournament before the Australian Open, which begins on January 16.

With a main-draw cutoff at No.22, Adelaide 2 also features No.8 Daria Kasatkina, and No.9 Veronika Kudermetova. 2022 Adelaide 250 champion Madison Keys has also entered the tournament, as well as 2022 Sydney champion Paula Badosa.

NASA launches 1st-ever mission to observe Earth’s water

0

NASA has launched the first-ever global satellite mission that will observe nearly all water on Earth’s surface, measuring the height of water in the planet’s lakes, rivers, reservoirs, and ocean.

The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) spacecraft atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on Friday.

“Warming seas, extreme weather, more severe wildfires — these are only some of the consequences humanity is facing due to climate change,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson.

“The climate crisis requires an all-hands-on-deck approach, and SWOT is the realization of a long-standing international partnership that will ultimately better equip communities so that they can face these challenges,” Nelson added.

The satellite was built by NASA and the French space agency Centre National d’Atudes Spatiales (CNES). The SWOT spacecraft also has contributions from the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the UK Space Agency.

The satellite will measure the height of water in freshwater bodies and the ocean on more than 90 percent of Earth’s surface.

This information will provide insights into how the ocean influences climate change; how a warming world affects lakes, rivers, and reservoirs; and how communities can better prepare for disasters, such as floods, said the US space agency.

SWOT will cover the entire Earth’s surface between 78 degrees south and 78 degrees north latitude at least once every 21 days, sending back about one terabyte of unprocessed data per day.

“We’re eager to see SWOT in action, said Karen St. Germain, NASA Earth Science Division director. aceThis satellite embodies how we are improving life on Earth through science and technological innovations”.

SWOT measurements will also help researchers, policymakers, and resource managers better assess and plan for things, including floods and droughts.

By providing information on where the water is — where it’s coming from and where it’s going — researchers can improve flood projections for rivers and monitor drought effects on lakes and reservoirs.

German Upper House approves price cap for electricity, gas

0

The German Bundesrat, or Upper House of Parliament, has approved the so-called energy price brakes that will cap electricity and gas prices in Europe’s largest economy to cushion the impact of high prices on consumers and businesses.

“The price breaks for gas, electricity and district heating are coming! It’s a good thing that the Bundestag and Bundesrat decided that. We will also support those who heat with oil or pellets, for example… We leave no one alone,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a tweet on Friday.

Further details are, however, still pending, reports the media agency. The price brakes are to apply from March 2023, but consumers also receive a one-time payment in January and February.

In order to give the incentive to reduce consumption amid the energy crisis, gas and electricity prices are only capped at 80 percent of average past consumption.

To finance the energy price brakes, the German government is providing up to 200 billion euros through the Economic Stabilization Fund, which was originally established to distribute state aid during the Covid-19 pandemic. Inflation relief packages totaling 95 billion euros were also passed this year.

Measures include short-term financial support to pay heating bills during winter and the reduction of the value-added tax (VAT) rate on gas and district heating from 19 percent to 7 percent.

Despite the relief measures, consumer prices for energy products were still 38.7 percent higher in November than in the same month a year ago.

After peaking at 10.4 percent in October, the inflation rate declined to 10.0 percent last month, according to the latest official data.

Ukraine’s 2nd largest city without power after Russian strikes

0

In the wake of the latest wave of Russian missile strikes that targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure, the war-torn nation’s second-biggest city of Kharkiv was left without electricity for hours.

According to local officials, at least nine power facilities were hit as Russian forces fired 76 missiles and carried out drone attacks on Friday, reports the Media.

On Friday evening, Oleg Synegubov, head of Kharkiv’s regional administration, said electricity supplies had been restored to 55 percent of city residents and 85 percent of those living in the northeastern region.

He added that energy sector employees were working to restore full power by midnight.

However, Ukraine’s power grid operator, Ukrenergo, warned that the scale of the damage could mean it will take longer to restore supplies.

The body said in a statement that the energy system had lost more than half of its capacity because of the latest strikes, adding that priority would be given to “critical infrastructure — hospitals, water supply facilities, heat supply facilities, sewage treatment plants”.

Defence Ministry adviser Yuriy Sak told the Media that emergency services were working to restore electricity supplies, but the situation was “still difficult”.

Friday’s missile strikes also killed three people and injured 13 others when a residential building was hit in Kryvyi Rih, while Kherson also reported one fatality. In Kiev, the capital city’s metro services were stopped, the media reported.

Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief General Valeriy Zaluzhny said air defenses had intercepted 60 of the 76 missiles fired, most of them cruise missiles.

Kiev city officials said about 40 missiles had been fired at the capital alone — one of the highest numbers since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Thirty-seven were brought down by air defenses, the officials added.

Friday’s strikes also cut power in the north-eastern Sumy region that borders Russia, and also in the central cities of Poltava and Kremenchuk. Fifteen rockets were reportedly fired at Zaporizhzhia in the south.

Russia has launched more than 1,000 missiles and Iranian-made attack drones since the wave of strikes began on October 10, although most of them have been intercepted by air defenses.

The biggest barrage, in mid-November, involved more than 100 missiles and drones.
