Actress Rakul Preet summoned by ED in drug-related case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday summoned, on December 19, actress Rakul Preet Singh in connection with a four-year-old drug trafficking and consumption case. Her statement was recorded by the ED in this connection last year too.

“The actress has been asked to appear before the investigating agency on December 19. Rakul Preet was questioned by the ED on September 2, 2021. Several Telugu actors were also questioned in the matter,” a source said.

The anti-money-laundering agency has been probing this drug trafficking and consumption case for the past four years after a high-end drugs cartel, supplying LSD and MDMA, and other narcotics, was busted in 2017 by Telangana’s Prohibition and Excise department.

The present case was lodged by the ED on the basis of that matter after it found that the money from that drug cartel was laundered via various channels.

India’s No. 1 women’s singles tennis player — Karman Kaur Thandi — won the ‘Most Stylish Sportsperson’ Award at the India Fashion Awards (IFA) 2022.

Karman, who trains at the RoundGlass Tennis Academy, was selected as the winner by a jury comprising fashion heavyweights and celebrities such as Dia Mirza, Raghavendra Rathore, Nikhil Kamath, Shalini Passi, Maneka Gandhi, Ambika Pillai, Kunal Rawal, Carol Gracias, Tarun Khiwal, Ravi Jaipuria, Sanjay Nigam and Vagish Pathak, at a gala event hosted in Delhi NCR.

“I thank the jury for choosing me for this honor. While my focus has always been tennis, it feels great to be recognized for my personal style by some of the best names in Indian fashion. My style reflects who I am – a woman, an Indian, and a global athlete,” said Karman dressed in an elegant flowing silver ensemble.

This was the third edition of the India Fashion Awards that celebrate innovators in the fashion industry. Ace fashion designers, Bollywood celebrities, and business tycoons including Manish Malhotra, Elnaaz Narouzi, Anaita Shroff, Rocky Star, Vipul Goel, Vijender Singh, and Aparna Bahl graced the occasion.

The 24-year-old Karman became India’s No. 1 women’s singles tennis player in October this year, displacing long-standing resident Ankita Raina.

The year 2022 has been a great one for the Indian tennis player. She shocked France”s Chloe Paquet in the first round of the WTA Chennai Open 2022 in September.

2023 looks another worst year for BYJU’s as its problems just don’t recede

0

As the year comes to a close, edtech platforms have hogged headlines for all the wrong reasons — from leading layoffs in the Indian startup ecosystem to shuttering several verticals — and top on the list is BYJU’s, be it sacking employees, alleged harsh and “abusive” work culture and now a reportedly “working capital crisis” as lenders ask the edtech unicorn to repay part of a $1.2 billion loan.

New reports have emerged that BYJU’s, which may have seen a definite erosion in its last market value at $22 billion, hasn’t paid several of its vendors for months.

According to Morning Context, “some of the payments are due since March and there is trouble with their clearance. In the eight months to October 2022, cumulative dues to vendors have crossed Rs 90 crore”.

When reached, BYJU’s did not offer a comment on this report.

Some employees at the edtech major also reportedly complained about harsh work conditions and “mistreatment” by managers at the company, apart from several complaints from parents and customers making rounds on social media platforms and online consumer forums about being exploited and deceived by its sales teams.

Such complaints against BYJUs have been there in the past too, as India reopened amid ‘hybrid normal’ and schools and colleges return to normal earlier this year and edtech platforms see a significant dip in the demand for online learning.

BYJU’s decided to lay off as many as 2,500 employees or 5 percent of its workforce in order to achieve profitability by March 2023.

Estimates suggest that the edtech sector has seen more than 7,000 layoffs across companies including BYJU’s, Unacademy, Vedantu, Lido Learning, FrontRow, Brainly, and more.

In seemingly fresh trouble for BYJU’s, some lenders have now asked the edtech unicorn to repay part of a $1.2 billion loan they recently bought into as they renegotiate terms of the debt.

Renegotiating the terms of the debt, including faster repayment are unlikely to be accepted since these lenders make up a minority and can’t sway the previously agreed terms, sources told Media.

The demand from creditors comes at a time when BYJU’s is in the process to restructure the loan, amid mounting losses.

Sources told Media that at least 51 percent of the lenders have to agree with the new terms and conditions of the loan, including repayment.

If this condition is not met, such a large loan issue cannot be rewritten and this is the standard clause in any term loan issue.

“Moreover the originally agreed loan repayment terms will be met,” according to a person close to the edtech major.

The edtech unicorn reported a loss of Rs 4,588 crore for the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2021.

The losses in 2020-21 fiscal widened from Rs 231.69 crore in 2019-20 while revenue during FY21 dropped to Rs 2,428 crore from Rs 2,511 crore in FY20.

According to the company, the losses widened in FY21 mainly on account of the deferment of some revenue and losses incurred from WhiteHat Jr.

Last month, global investment group Prosus put the fair value of its 9.67 percent stake in BYJU’S at $578 million, which technically puts the current valuation of the edtech major at nearly $6 billion — last valued at $22 billion.

In its September quarter results, Prosus classified BYJU’s as a non-controlling financial investment rather than an associate, as its shareholding dropped below 10 percent.

After six “stressful and tough learning months” as it delayed the audited FY21 financial reports for nearly 18 months, inviting government scrutiny and serious questions from the public, Byju Raveendran finally told Media in September that “the worst is finally over” and there is only “growth ahead” as seen in the company’s FY22 financial results.

The edtech major clocked gross revenues of nearly Rs 10,000 crore in FY22.

Last year, he went on an acquisition spree. The edtech unicorn made at least 10 acquisitions for a cumulative transaction value of about $2.5 billion — including Delhi-based offline test preparatory services provider Aakash for over $950 million.

Raveendran said that loss-making acquisitions like WhiteHat Jr, the beleaguered coding platform BYJU acquired for $300 million, are now being consolidated.

However, if we look at the big picture, BYJU is facing another litmus test in 2023 as the edtech bubble has finally burst in the country.

How far can BYJU’s avoid a super-strong headwind in the online education space? Time will tell us shortly.

1st Test, Day 3: Shanto, Zakir take Bangladesh to 42/0 at stumps after Gill, Pujara tons help India set target of 513

0

Bangladesh’s young openers Najmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan took the hosts to 42/0 at stumps on day three after Shubman Gill slammed his first Test hundred and Cheteshwar Pujara hit his first century in 52 innings for India to set a target of 513 in the first Test at Chattogram on Friday.

After Kuldeep Yadav’s third five-wicket haul in his eighth Test helped India bowl out Bangladesh for 150 in the first innings, Gill hit a quick 110 while Pujara smashed 102 not out, his fastest-ever hundred in Test cricket and first since January 2019, as the visitors declared their second innings at 258/2.

Resuming the day from 133/8, India had a breakthrough when Kuldeep got one to spin past Ebadot Hossain’s flick and took the faint edge behind to Rishabh Pant, who completed a sharp catch down the leg to complete his fifer.

Seven overs later, Mehidy Hasan Miraz was stumped by Pant off Axar Patel to end Bangladesh’s innings, where only two batters Mehidy and Mushfiqur Rahim – were able to bat for more than 50 deliveries, giving India a lead of 254 runs.

In the second innings, K.L Rahul got off the mark with a beautiful drive-through cover off Khaled Ahmed. Gill was troubled by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam and was even trapped lbw off him, but wasn’t dismissed as the review showed the ball missing leg-stump.

As Gill continued to be more watchful, Rahul got some loose deliveries off Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the final over before lunch, leaning into a drive on a full and wide delivery through backward point while cutting through the same region on backfoot as the duo made 36 in first 15 overs.

Bangladesh missed the services of Ebadot, who didn’t take the field due to back spasms while captain Shakib Al Hasan did not bowl due to niggles around his shoulder, leaving the hosts’ with just three main bowling options.

Post lunch, Gill looked different, slashing, sweeping with authority, glancing gently off his and then bringing out his trademark short-arm jab to collect four boundaries. When Mehidy gave some flight, Gill was quick to dance down the pitch and lean into the drive-through cover.

Bangladesh’s short ball ploy to Rahul worked when the Indian skipper pulled straight to the fielder in the deep off Khaled. Gill had luck on his side when a sharp turner from Mehidy trapped him lbw, and Bangladesh burnt a review as the on-field call of not outstayed. On the very next ball, Gill came out to whip Mehidy through mid-wicket, followed by bringing up his fifty and sweeping to collect another cracking boundary.

Against a harmless short ball from Khaled, Gill nailed the pull for six and swept against Taijul for four. On the other hand, Pujara was able to take time and get going with the punch and pull off Mehidy and Khaled.

Gill had a scare on 70 when Bangladesh asked for DRS after the on-field umpire turned down lbw appeal. But the DRS was not available due to technical issues and the on-field decision stayed. Pujara increased Yasir’s agony by bringing out a pull and on-drive to take a brace of boundaries just before the tea break.

After tea, Gill danced down the pitch to hit Litton Das for a huge six-over long-on. He then brought out a reverse sweep against Mehidy for a boundary, before coming down the pitch and lofting the off-spinner over mid-on to get his hundred in 147 balls.

In Mehidy’s next over, Gill would dance down the pitch and loft over long-on for six. But in a bid to get another six, he holed out to deep mid-wicket. Pujara took charge from there, completing his fifty in 86 balls and using his feet beautifully, and constantly to flick, paddle-sweep, sweep, punch, and loft over mid-on and mid-off against spinners.

After pulling Yasir through the fine leg, Pujara broke his Test century drought by dancing down the pitch again to whip past a misfielding mid-on off Taijul for a boundary, in a knock in which his last 52 runs came in just 43 balls as India immediately declared their innings.

Chasing 513, Shanto and Zakir did well to negotiate the tricky 12-over phase without much trouble, especially under fading light. There was some turn available for the Indian bowlers, but with the pitch slowing down considerably, the visitors will have to work hard for the next two days as Bangladesh are still behind by 471 runs with two full days left in the match.

Brief scores:

India 404 in 133.5 overs and 258/2 declared in 61.4 overs (Shubman Gill 110, Cheteshwar Pujara 102 not out; Khaled Ahmed 1-51, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 1-82) lead Bangladesh 150 all out in 55.5 overs (Mushfiqur Rahim 28; Kuldeep Yadav 5-40) and 42 for no loss in 12 overs (Najmul Hossain Shanto batting 25, Zakir Hussain batting 17) by 512 runs

Global mobile ad spend to reach $362 bn in 2023

0

As mobile captures share of ad wallet, global mobile ad spend is expected to reach $362 billion in 2023, a new report has shown.

According to data.ai report, mobile will take over the share of advertising wallet as more time than ever before is spent in apps, with total hours on the track to surpass four trillion on Android phones alone in 2022.

In 2022, the global mobile ad spend was $336 billion. Moreover, the report also said that the economic headwinds and privacy regulations will dampen mobile gaming spending in 2022 and 2023.

Consumer spending in mobile gaming will drop -5 percent in 2022 to $110 billion from the consumer squeeze due to the economic downturn.

In 2023, 14 more titles will join the coveted $2 billion app club. About 11 of the 14 titles in the app store on gaming are expected to surpass $2 billion in consumer spending.

Seven apps and games will join the $3 billion app club in 2023, according to the report. Furthermore, the global hours spent on mobile are expected to surpass six trillion hours in 2028.

Increasing mobile centricity, advancements in connected technologies, growth of casual and core gaming, 5G roll-out, demand for digital connection, self-expression, and deepening personalization of apps will drive sustained growth in time spent on mobile devices.

Video streaming and user-generated content will continue to fuel growth in the next six years, said the report.

Austria’s economy expected to face stagnation in 2023

0

The Austrian Institute of Economic Research (WIFO) said that it expects the country’s economy to stagnate next year amid the ongoing energy crisis and the global economic downturn.

Austria’s gross domestic product (GDP) is projected to grow by only 0.3 per cent in 2023, Xinhua news agency quoted the WIFO as saying in a report.

The institute said that Austria’s economy is expected to “decline noticeably” this winter as “persistently high energy prices, strong price dynamics, and uncertainty about future developments are depressing sentiment”.

Although Austria’s economic outlook is expected to pick up from the spring of 2023 as uncertainty recedes and the energy crisis gradually eases, the country will fail to register significant economic growth next year, according to WIFO.

The institute expects Austria’s GDP to grow by 4.7 per cent in 2022, driven by the country’s strong economic performance in the first half of the year.

With the projected stagnation in 2023, the country’s economy is expected to return to significant growth of 1.8 per cent in 2024.

Last month, WIFO said that the lingering energy crisis will weigh on Austria’s economy in the medium term, causing the country’s GDP to grow by an annual average of only 1 percent from 2023 to 2027.

Jane Fonda says she’s in remission from cancer

Hollywood star Jane Fonda’s cancer is in remission, the star announced. “BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER!!!” wrote Fonda, who turns 85 on December 21, reports Variety.

“Last week I was told by my oncologist that my cancer is in remission and I can discontinue chemo. I am feeling so blessed, so fortunate. I thank all of you who prayed and sent good thoughts my way.”

The two-time Oscar winner had previously taken to Instagram on September 2 to announce she’d been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and had started on a six-month-long chemo journey.

She assured followers that the cancer is “very treatable” and has an 80 percent survival rate.

The last chemo session was one of the hardest, Fonda said in her recent post, describing how she felt exhausted for the two weeks that followed.

But come December 2, Fonda still managed to make an appearance in Washington, D.C. at the first live rally for Fire Drill Fridays – a project Fonda conceived in 2019 with Greenpeace USA. During her medical treatment, Fonda has continued to be a proponent of climate change activism, coordinating weekly rallies virtually and now in-person through the non-profit.

“The effects wore off just as I went to D.C. for the first live, in-person Fire Drill Fridays rally. Thank heavens for that because it was a busy week,” Fonda continued in her post.

“Besides the rally, I did some lobbying and spoke twice at the Democracy Alliance all in an effort to stop Senator Joe Manchin’s side deal which climate activists call the Dirty Deal.

“This deal, called ‘permitting reform’, seeks to fast track fossil fuel projects, does great harm to bedrock environmental protections, and curtails the public’s ability to have input, basically throwing marginalized communities disproportionately burdened by fossil fuel pollution under the bus.”

1st Test, Day 3: India lead by 290 runs after Kuldeep’s five-for bowls out Bangladesh for 150

0

India ended the first session on day three of the first Test against Bangladesh with a lead of 290 runs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, here on Friday.

After Kuldeep Yadav completed his third five-for in the eighth Test match and India bowled out Bangladesh for just 150, captain KL Rahul (20 not out) and Shubman Gill (15 not out) took the visitors to 36/0 in the first 15 overs of the second innings.

Rahul got off the mark with a beautiful drive-through cover off Khaled Ahmed, before being cautious alongside Gill, who was being troubled by left-arm spinner Taijul Islam. He even had Gill trapped lbw in the fourth over but didn’t get his scalp as the review showed the ball would miss the leg-stump.

As Gill continued to be more watchful, Rahul finally got some loose deliveries off Mehidy Hasan Miraz in the final over before lunch, leaning into a drive on a full and wide delivery through backward point. When Mehidy again gave width, Rahul was quick to go on backfoot and cut fiercely through the same region.

Bangladesh missed the services of quick bowler Ebadot Hossain, who didn’t take the field due to back spasms, and with captain Shakib Al Hasan did not bowling due to his niggles around his ribs and shoulder. The pitch didn’t show any signs of playing tricks, but could soon show some of them post-lunch.

Previously in the morning, India took a massive 254-run lead, thanks to Kuldeep’s fifer, and chose not to enforce the follow-on. Resuming from 133/8, Ebadot and Mehidy hit a boundary each off Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep.

India had a breakthrough in Kuldeep’s next over when he got one to spin past Ebadot’s flick and took the faint edge behind to Rishabh Pant, who completed a sharp catch down the leg. Ebadot’s dismissal ended the 42-run stand and made Kuldeep the first Indian bowler to take a fifer at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

Seven overs later, Mehidy was stumped by Pant off Axar Patel to end Bangladesh’s innings, where only two batters — Mehidy and Mushfiqur Rahim — were able to bat for more than 50 deliveries.

On Thursday, Mohammed Siraj grabbed three wickets with the new ball — including taking out Najmul Hossain Shanto on the first delivery of the Bangladesh innings, to run through the top order.

Kuldeep then took over with his pace, flight, and turn to spin a web around the Bangladesh batters. On his second delivery of the match, he had captain Shakib Al Hasan caught at first slip, followed by having Nurul Hasan caught at short-leg.

He had two more scalps on day two — trapping Rahim plumb lbw and cramping Taijul Islam for a room with a googly, forcing him to chop onto his stumps.

Brief Scores:

India 404 in 133.5 overs (Cheteshwar Pujara 90; Taijul Islam 4/133) and 36/0 in 15 overs (KL Rahul 20 not out,Shubman Gill 15 not out) lead Bangladesh 150 all out in 55.5 overs (Mushfiqur Rahim 28, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 25; Kuldeep Yadav 5/40, Mohammed Siraj 3/20) by 290 runs

Big B’s comments at KIFF inauguration indirect submission of misrule in Bengal: BJP

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s remarks about questions being raised on “civil liberties” and “freedom of expression” at the inauguration function of the 28th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) on Thursday evening is being described by the BJP as a “clandestine admission of the misrule and trampling of democratic rights in West Bengal”.

The BJP leaders have also complimented Big B for showing the courage to highlight the issue while he was sharing the same dais with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the KIFF’s inauguration programme. “Even now, I am sure my colleagues on stage would agree that questions are being raised on civil liberties and freedom of expression,” Bachchan said.

BJP’s national general secretary, B.L. Santhosh issued a Twitter message claiming that the Bollywood megastar had hit the nail on the head with the chief minister on his side. “He hit the nail on the head of @MamataOfficial on his side. Thank you @SrBachchan for standing for victims of political violence in West Bengal.”

BJP’s IT cell chief and the special observer for the party in West Bengal, Amit Malviya also issued a Twitter message claiming that Big B’s comments were more appropriate as they were being said in Kolkata. Amitabh Bachchan’s words couldn’t have been more prophetic since they were spoken in Kolkata, with Mamata Banerjee on the dais. It is like holding a mirror to the tyrant, under whose watch India witnessed the bloodiest post-poll violence. She has tarnished the image of Bengal…”

In fact, the star-studded audience at the KIFF’s inaugural function on Thursday evening was a bit taken by the veteran actor’s references to the issues of “civil liberties” and “freedom of expression”. The actor is otherwise known for dodging political issues in public forums.

Prior to his speech on Thursday evening, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan too made a loaded statement referring to how social media was often driven by a narrowness of views that enclose collective narrative and makes it more divisive and destructive.

Twitter will suspend accounts engaged in doxxing for 7 days: Musk

0

Elon Musk on Friday announced that Twitter accounts engaged in doxxing will receive a temporary seven-day suspension.

Emphasizing that criticizing him all day long is totally fine, “but doxxing my real-time location and endangering my family is not”.

“7-day suspension for doxxing. Some time away from Twitter is good for the soul,” he chuckled, after organizing a poll on the subject on his Twitter handle.

Doxxing (also spelled doxing) is the act of revealing someone’s personal information online. Doxxing is a form of online harassment that means publicly exposing someone’s real name, address, job, or other identifying data.

The new Twitter owner earlier suspended Jack Sweeney’s Twitter account and tracked Musk’s private jet.

Musk on Thursday claimed his little son, who goes by the name ‘X’, was followed by a “crazy stalker” on the road in Los Angeles.

On Friday, he also said that a time delay in reporting location that doesn’t put people at serious risk of being killed is fine.

He also suspended accounts of several prominent journalists, including Donie O’Sullivan from CNN and Drew Harwell from The Washington Post as they covered the “exact real-time location” of Musk.

Musk had earlier said that any account doxxing real-time location info of anyone will be suspended, as it is a physical safety violation.

“This includes posting links to sites with real-time location info. Posting locations someone traveled to on a slightly delayed basis isn’t a safety problem, so is ok,” Musk informed.

On November 7, Musk claimed that the account was a “personal safety risk” but he will not suspend it as a part of his “commitment to free speech”.

Be prepared against tariff walls on exports by nations undergoing green transition: FM to industry

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday asked the Indian industry to be prepared against “tariff walls” which are likely to be imposed by nations undertaking green transitions, on Indian exports, especially steel products.

“Many nations want to fund their green transition and are imposing tariff walls on products from other nations. If we export steel to such places, it is likely to face this tariff wall or tax for the green transition. Indian industry needs to reset itself accordingly,” she said while addressing the industry body FICCI’s annual general meeting (AGM).

Sitharaman further noted that with many European nations looking to relocate to other countries for setting up manufacturing facilities, out of China, India should look to make use of this opportunity and present itself as a viable manufacturing hub for Europe. She urged the industry to prepare strategies for bringing manufacturers to India.

The minister said that during the tenure of India’s G20 presidency, Government would showcase the country as a destination to go for, investors from G20 nations, especially for manufacturing.

Stating that India continues to remain a resilient economy amid a fluid geopolitical situation, Sitharaman quoted World Economic Forum’s data, saying that by 2030, there would be 140 million middle-income households and 14 million high-net-worth households in the country.

This, she highlighted, shows the scale of India’s growth in the future. In this context, the focus of the industry should be on widening technological growth, making use of the robust framework provided by the Government, the finance minister suggested.

1st Test, Day 3: Kuldeep bags five-for as India bowl out Bangladesh for 150, take massive 254-run lead

0

Left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav picked a five-for (5/40) as India bowled out Bangladesh for 150 in their first innings, taking a massive 254-run lead on Day 3 of the first Test, here on Friday.

After wrapping up Bangladesh’s innings within 45 minutes of day three, India chose not to enforce the follow-on and decided to bat again, which became evident when captain KL Rahul started sprinting back once Bangladesh’s last wicket fell.

Resuming from 133/8, Ebadot Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz hit a boundary each off Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav. India had a breakthrough in Kuldeep’s next over when he got one to spin past Ebadot’s flick and took the faint edge behind to Rishabh Pant, who completed a sharp catch down the leg.

Ebadot’s dismissal gave Kuldeep his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket and made him the first Indian bowler to take a fifer at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. Seven overs later, Mehidy was stumped by Pant off Axar Patel to end Bangladesh’s innings, where only two batters — Mehidy and Mushfiqur Rahim — were able to bat for more than 50 deliveries.

Earlier on Thursday, Mohammed Siraj grabbed three wickets with the new ball – including taking out Najmul Hossain Shanto on the first delivery of the Bangladesh innings, to run through the top-order.

Now with Bangladesh out for 150, the ball is sharply turning and some good bounce is available for the fast bowlers, India would want Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli to get solid runs after falling cheaply in the first innings.

Brief Scores:

India 404 in 133.5 overs (Cheteshwar Pujara 90, Shreyas Iyer 86; Taijul Islam 4/133, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 4/112) lead Bangladesh 150 all out in 55.5 overs (Mushfiqur Rahim 28, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 25; Kuldeep Yadav 5/40, Mohammed Siraj 3/20) by 254 runs

CLOSE-IN: ‘Horses for Courses’ should be the buzz words for cricket today

0

The famous proverb, “Horses for Courses” is so relevant for cricket at the present time. The definition was synonymous with Horse racing which was finally adapted to the corporate world as well. In racing, it signified the importance of a racehorse’s performance on a racecourse best and ideally suited for it. Whereas, in the corporate world it involved people who are most suitable for different things or kinds of situations that one is confronted with.

In cricket, with the introduction of the three different formats of the game, a cricketer is rapidly moving towards specialization. This is to make one more focused and tuned in one’s quest to achieve one’s ultimate goal.

The change in the way a cricket team and a cricketer is approaching the sport has created a bit of confusion in the minds of the people selecting, following, and playing the game. Change, as one says, is inevitable, however, the procedure to successfully implement it is not so easily understood.

The skills and technique that a batter learns as a junior cricketer, even a decade ago, seem outdated compared to the power hitting and stroke- play required to play in the limited-overs version of the game today.

The T20 has brought about a complete revolution, with batters playing shots all around the ground. One earlier only associated such play when one played “French cricket”, to prevent one from being hit on the leg from behind.

The bat has now become a club that can be swished in every direction and on occasion with the back of the bat as well. One wonders as to which direction cricket batting will take in the future. One such possibility could be “Kalaripayattu” the famous ancient martial art dance of Kerala done with short sticks, swords, and shields.

The agility, flexibility, strength, and quick acrobatic movements could be a useful tools for young cricketers to master. The reverse sweep, switch hits, scoop and a cross-bat slap over slips, cover, and now over the mid-off and mid-on are prime examples of strokes that have become a part of a batter’s repertoire.

The traditional and conventional form of the game, Test cricket, is also facing the fast-moving and result-oriented requirements of what a modern day connoisseur of the game wants to see.

The English side under the captaincy of Ben Stokes has made it their ‘mantra’ and their success has been truly appreciated by one and all. There is an element of risk that in the past one would be worried about taking, however, a challenge to overcome that risk is what the followers of the game presently admire.

Indian cricket one feels is still living in the past. The data regime and the past performance charts play a major role in the selection of players.

The time has come for the Indian think tank to identify players suitable for a specific task. This is why the saying, “Horses for Courses” has become so relevant to Indian cricket. One can see Indian players struggling at times while facing a short or a moving ball and they still persist with them because of their successful achievements in the past.

There seems to be a safe approach to an Indian team’s selection rather than making a meaningful and bold change. The element of failure and criticism seems to be the reason why the people at the helm are reluctant to do so.

The forceful and aggressive approach of Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli was appreciated as long as the Indian side was winning and it soon became their Achilles heel when they lost. The sober, intelligent, and well-structured approach of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma was a solution that one felt will change the fortune and image of Indian cricket. Unfortunately, that too has not brought about the success that one hoped for.

The problem that Indian cricketers and the people associated with them face is the “Fear of Losing”. Most of the millions of followers of Indian cricket cannot absorb a loss and the backlash that follows after a defeat is inconceivable. Unfortunately, the Indian cricket follower has still not matured to understand that winning and losing is a part and parcel of playing a sport.

The other very important issue revolves around money in India. The cricketer, the coach, and the support staff are well paid and because of that one feels they need to show their worth. Money seems to equate with performance, how else can one fathom the bookworms of the game bringing up statistics balancing the number of runs made to a player’s IPL or BCCI salary.

In this world of specialization, Indian cricket has to look beyond their massive adulating fans and followers, opinions and reactions, and choose the best players that they feel need to be there. Only then will Indian cricket flourish.

In this ever-changing world, one feels Indian cricket needs to modernize. They need to show confidence not only on the field but off the field as well.

Rahul Dravid, their coach, has to be at the forefront at all times and especially at press conferences before and after the game. An explanation from an intelligent, straightforward forward and well-mannered successful cricketer like him, would be just the tonic that the doctor ordered to silence the critics in this time of uncertainty that is prevalent today.

Astronauts found damage to the outer skin of the instrument-assembly compartment of the Russian spacecraft Soyuz MS-22 that is docked at the International Space Station (ISS).

The crew on Thursday reported that the warning device of the spaceship’s diagnostic system went off, indicating a pressure drop in the cooling system, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a statement by Russia’s state space corporation Roscosmos.

After a visual inspection confirmed the leak, the planned extravehicular activities by crew members of the Russian segment of the ISS, Sergei Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin, were canceled, it said.

Russian cosmonaut Anna Kikina, using a camera on a manipulator mounted on the Nauka multifunctional laboratory module, photographed and filmed the outer surface of the Soyuz MS-22 and transmitted the data back to Earth for study.

Currently, all systems of the ISS and the spaceship are operating normally and the crew is safe, Roscosmos said, adding that a decision will be made on further actions after specialists analyze the situation.

The Soyuz MS-22 manned spacecraft blasted off from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on September 21, taking Prokopyev, Petelin, and a NASA astronaut to the ISS for a six-month stay in orbit.
