Odisha CM writes to Sitharaman for withdrawal of GST on kendu leaves

0

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to withdraw the 18 per cent GST imposed on kendu leaves.

In a letter to Sitharaman, Patnaik said kendu leaves, minor forest produce (MFP) is the financial backbone of about 8 lakhs kendu leaf pluckers, binders & seasonal workers of Odisha and mostly belonging to the tribal community and poorest of the poor of society.

The tribal people collect the leaves as part of their rights defined under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006. They have the right to procure and sell these products, he said.

“Imposition of GST (18 percent) on kendu (tendu) leaves is adversely affecting the kendu leaves trade. This in turn affects the livelihoods of tendu leaves, pluckers, binders & seasonal workers and implementation of social security and welfare schemes for them,” the Chief Minister said in his letter.

In the interest of the livelihoods of the kendu leaves-dependent community, Patnaik urged the GST Council Chairperson to withdraw the GST imposed on kendu leaves for the greater interest of Odisha.

On November 23, Patnaik announced a bonus of Rs 1,000 for each plucker and Rs 1,500 for each seasonal staff and binders in the first phase.

These above developments came in the wake of the upcoming bypoll to the Padampur Assembly segment in Bargarh district on December 5.

Notably, 18 of the 30 districts, including Bargarh district, have maximum kendu leaf growing areas.

Australia snatch 5-4 win against India in first match of hockey series

0

Hosts Australia snatched a 5-4 win against India in the opening match of the five-game fixture here with as many as three goals being scored in the last quarter here on Saturday.

Both teams lived up to the billing as they produced an electrifying match, with as many as nine goals being scored in 60 minutes of entertaining hockey, leaving the weekend spectators on the edge of their seats.

For India, experienced forward Akashdeep Singh (10th, 27th, 59th) scored a hat-trick of goals and Harmanpreet Singh (31st) was too impressed with his PC attack. For the home team, Lachlan Sharp (5th), Nathan Ephraums (21st), Tom Craig (41st), and Blake Govers (57th, 60+) scored to put their team ahead.

As expected, the match began on a rollicking note, with the home team raising the tempo in the very first quarter. The speed with which they attacked, showed their intent but India stayed toe-to-toe. Even though Australia picked up the first strike with Sharp scoring a scintillating goal set up by Tom Craig in the fifth minute, India stayed composed to find the right moment to score. Only three minutes later, a good tackle by Dilpreet Singh led to India’s counter-attack which was capitalized well with Akashdeep scoring an equalizer.

Australia’s second goal too was set up by Tom Craig who dominated the midfield, assisting Ephraums in the 21st minute to put one past India goalkeeper Krishan Pathak who replaced Sreejesh in the second quarter.

Six minutes later, it was Akashdeep Singh leading India’s attack again as he scored another equalizer in the 27th minute followed by a PC in the 31st minute which was miraculously converted by Harmanpreet Singh after a slight fumble by Rajkumar Pal who was positioned as the stopper in the PC attack. This goal by India’s captain put his team ahead by 3-2 for the first time in the game, however, Australia bounced back in the third quarter with a goal by Tom Craig in the 41st minute.

The last quarter was brilliantly played with Australia coming out in top gear. They pushed India to make errors, leading to a PC being awarded in the 57th minute. This was their 7th PC of the match and Blake Govers converted from a fine variation snatching a 4-3 lead.

Akashdeep’s heroics though led to India’s fourth goal, leveling the scores with just a minute left for the final hooter, one would think the match would end in a draw but Australia’s fighting spirit was in the fore yet again. Winning a PC with seconds left for the final hooter, Blake scored his second goal and his team’s fifth which put Australia ahead by 1-0 in the five-match series.

“It was a disappointing finish to what was probably a pretty good performance,” expressed India’s Chief Coach Graham Reid after the match.

“We let ourselves down at certain stages specifically in two quarters but I think we came back well only to, unfortunately, hand it back to them (Australia) at the end. That’s something we have to get better at now,” he stated.

“The challenge now is to put a good performance together. One of the objectives of this tour is consistency, and that’s the challenge for us tomorrow,” asserted Reid.

From Meta to Zomato, how India’s new online review rules will impact industry

0

With the new Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) guidelines coming into force to guard customers against fake online reviews of products, tech giants like Meta and Google, along with homegrown platforms like Zomato and Flipkart, will now face closer scrutiny of product reviews on their respective platforms.

The guidelines, prescribing specific responsibilities for the review author and the review administrator, went live on Friday and are now applicable to every online platform which publishes consumer reviews.

The new norms have been finalized by the BIS and came into being after the Department of Consumer Affairs received several complaints about fake reviews of products being posted by e-commerce companies on social media and their platforms.

“The new guidelines for online reviews are designed to drive increased transparency for both consumers and brands and promote information accuracy”, said Sachin Taparia, Founder of LocalCircles, the community platform who made the initial submission to the Department of Consumer Affairs and was part of the BIS committee drafting the guidelines.

As far as platforms like Google and Meta go, the new rules will require them to validate the real person behind the review through specified six-right mechanisms which mean fake accounts created just for review writing will go away over time or won’t be able to be reviewed.

For platforms like Swiggy and Zomato, their reviews at the restaurant level are partially transparent “but the process of food item level review is not transparent at all and will have to be designed accordingly”, Taparia told Media.

For eCommerce platforms, the new guidelines will ensure that negative reviews are not suppressed without reason thereby ensuring that other consumers will come to know of problems sooner. According to the new set of guidelines, both consumers and suppliers/sellers have reported some problems with online reviews.

“These problems might be intentional or unintentional, but can lead to a degradation of trust in the online review process,” read the BIS document.

Some reported problems are false positive reviews written by the suppliers/sellers themselves intending to mislead consumers and false negative reviews written by suppliers/sellers’ competitors intending to ward off consumers from the organization.

According to Taparia, for travel platforms, it is common for hotels to invite bloggers and influencers for free stays and then get them to write a nice review but “going forward, the platforms will have to enable the disclosure of such sponsored reviews so the consumer is aware”.

The guidelines will also have an implication for ratings of apps on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, where developers at times run paid campaigns to get their app rated 5 stars.

Apple and Google will now need to take undertakings about reviews from these app developers about sponsored ratings.

“There are several product reviews and rating websites/apps which just provide information and many times plant a negative review to attract brands. This will have to change as the guidelines will require them to make disclosures and identify the person rating,” Taparia noted.

The violation of new standards by any entity may be considered an unfair trade practice or violation of consumer rights and a consumer may submit such grievances to the National Consumer Helpline or the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

Warner has paid the price; he should be allowed to lead: McGrath

0

Legendary Australian pace bowler Glenn McGrath believes opening batter David Warner has paid the price for his role in the ball-tampering episode in 2018, and that he should be allowed to lead the national side if he has the inclination.

Three Australian cricketers — then-skipper Steve Smith, Warner, and Cameron Bancroft — were banned following the ‘sandpaper-gate’ scandal during the third Test of the series against South Africa at Newlands.

The trio was banned for a maximum period of one year, but apart from the suspension, a lifetime leadership role ban was imposed by Cricket Australia (CA) on Warner. But CA recently amended its policy, making the charismatic batter eligible to lead again and McGrath believes Warner deserves his chance to be captain.

“I think the way Cricket Australia has handled the situation has left the door open for Warner (to become captain in any format),” McGrath told Daily Mail Australia. “I think they (Warner, Smith, and Bancroft) have paid their price.

“They have paid a heavier price than any other cricketer that’s been done for ball tampering and if that (captaining Australia) is something David Warner wants to do and the powers that be are happy, then good luck to him,” he added.

McGrath, however, felt the scandal will be a permanent scar on Australian cricket.

“I think if we could go back in time, it would be great to get rid of what happened over there,” he said. “It was definitely a low point in Australian cricket, there’s no doubt about that. But I think they have all learned a big lesson.”

Twitter as a platform must be fair to all: Musk

0

Twitter CEO Elon Musk on Saturday said that he had reinstated former US President Donald Trump back on the platform, as Trump did not violate any law and the micro-blogging “platform must be fair to all”.

The saga started when a user tweeted, “It’s been a week since @elonmusk brought Trump back… and without him even tweeting once…”

Musk replied: “I’m fine with Trump not tweeting. The important thing is that Twitter correct a grave mistake in banning his account, despite no violation of the law or terms of service.”

“As a reminder, I was a significant supporter of the Obama-Biden presidency and (reluctantly) voted for Biden over Trump,” he added.

“But Twitter as a platform must be fair to all,” he said.

Several users expressed their thoughts on Musk’s tweet.

While one commented, “I truly hope we have moderate candidates that don’t go too far either direction,” another said, “Why do you have to say it publicly? people will judge you for your choice and maybe they will stop liking Twitter. Twitter must be neutral, without political opinion.”

Based on a poll, Twitter CEO on November 20 had announced that former US President Trump was allowed to rejoin the micro-blogging platform.

PSLV rocket lifts off with Indo French satellite EOS 6 and 8 nanosatellites

0

Indias Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C54 (PSLV-C54) on Saturday morning lifted off with the Indo-French earth observation satellite (EOS 6) and eight nanosatellites from the rocket port here in Andhra Pradesh.

The XL variant of PSLV rocket carrying the 1,117 kg EOS-6 as its primary passenger and eight others as piggybacks- blasted off from the first launch pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) here at 11.56 a.m.

The piggybacks include satellites from two Indian startups – Syzygy Space Technologies Pvt Ltd, commonly known as Pixxel (Anand-16.51 kg), and Dhruvaspace’s two Thybolt satellites – 1.45 kg, Spaceflight USA’s Astrosat (four numbers 17.92 kg) and ISRO’s INS-2B (18.28 kg).

If the launch is successful, the PSLV rocket would have launched 349 foreign satellites belonging to 36 countries since 1999 with the PSLV rocket.

The four-stage expendable, 44.4 m tall XL variant of PSLV rocket weighing 321 tons slowly rose up towards the skies with thick orange flame at its tail.

The rocket gained speed as it went up while emitting a rolling thunder sound. The PSLV rocket is powered by solid (first and third stages) and liquid (second and fourth stages) fuels alternatively.

The rocket that flew on Saturday was the 56th mission of PSLV and the 24th mission using the PSLV-XL variant having six strap-on booster motors with six-ton fuel.

According to ISRO, the Indo-French collaborative EOS-6/Oceansat will provide continuity services for Oceansat-2 spacecraft with enhanced payload capabilities and application areas.

The EOS-6 payloads include Ocean Color Monitor (OCM-3), Sea Surface Temperature Monitor (SSTM), Ku-Band Scatterometer (SCAT-3) and ARGOS – a French payload.

According to France, ARGOS will reinforce the existing fleet of Indo-French satellites working on weather surveillance that are already in orbit (MEGHA-TROPIQUES and SARAL-ALTIKA), thus enhancing contributions related to the objectives of the Paris Agreement.

The ISRO said the satellite will ensure data continuity of ocean color and wind vector data to sustain the operational applications.

It will also improve the applications, some additional datasets such as Sea Surface Temperature and more bands in the Optical region for fluorescence and in the Infrared region for atmospheric corrections are accommodated.

The satellite will also develop/improve related algorithms and data products to serve in well-established application areas and enhance the mission utility.

The INS-2B is ISRO’s second nanosatellite for Bhutan with two payloads viz., NanoMx and APRS-Digipeater.

According to ISRO, NanoMx is a multispectral optical imaging payload developed by its Space Applications Centre (SAC). The APRS-Digipeater payload is jointly developed by DITTBhutan and ISRO’s UR Rao Satellite Centre (URSC).

Pixxel’s Anand nanosatellite is a technology demonstrator to demonstrate the capabilities and commercial applications of the miniaturized earth-observation camera for earth observation using a microsatellite in Low Earth Orbit. This is a three-axis stabilized satellite consisting of a satbus, accommodating all subsystems like telemetry, telecommand, electrical power system, Attitude Determination and Control System (ADCS), on-board computers and others, and a payload unit, ISRO said.

The Thybolt satellites from Dhuruvaspace have a communication payload to enable rapid technology demonstration and constellation development for multiple users. It also demonstrates Store-and-Forward functionality for authorized users in the amateur frequency band.

The Thybolt satellites will be deployed by using Dhruva Space Orbital Deployer to perform the specific mission operations for a minimum lifetime of one year.

Astrocast, a 3U spacecraft, is a technology demonstrator satellite for the Internet of Things (IoT) as the payload.

The rocket will orbit the EOS-6 and the eight small satellites in two different sun-synchronous polar orbits (SSPO).

About 17 minutes into the flight the rocket will first eject EOS-6. Then the orbit will be changed by using two Orbit Change Thrusters introduced in the rocket’s propulsion bay ring. The piggyback passengers will be separated in Orbit-2.

Amid financial squeeze, a $1.5m sculpture for UK PM’s garden

0

As millions feel a financial crunch in the UK, the government has splurged 1.3 million pounds (US$1.5 m) on a sculpture for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s garden.

The bronze sculpture by Henry Moore, titled Working Model for Seated Woman, has been sent to 10 Downing Street amid the burgeoning cost of living crisis in the UK, The Sun reported.

The 1980 sculpture bought by the taxpayer-funded Government Art Collection is believed to have been sold at a Christie’s auction last month for just over 1.3 million pounds.

According to Christie’s website, the piece of art “conveys a strong sense of maternity and pregnancy — from the gentle watchfulness of the woman’s face and her guarded posture to the protective nature of her arms and the architectural shelter she offers between her lap and shoulders to this, semi-abstract, embryonic and Jean Arp-like form”.

Downing Street said no politicians were involved in the decision to buy, The Sun reported.

With inflation hitting a 41-year high of 11.1 percent in October, Britons have been cutting back on their spending.

According to a GlobalData for VoucherCodes research, Britons will spend 8.7 billion pounds ($10.5 billion) over the Black Friday weekend (November 25 – November 28).

A new MetLife UK research said 48 percent of people are worried about missing their mortgage repayments due to the soaring cost of living crisis.

The study further revealed that 42 percent have no savings to fall back on if they found themselves unable to pay their mortgage.

Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty were recently ranked 17th on the UK’s ‘Asian Rich List 2022’, with an estimated wealth of 790 million pounds.

Greta Gerwig was ‘terrified’ of making ‘Barbie’ movie: This could be a career-ender

Filmmaker Greta Gerwig, who currently awaits the release of her highly anticipated ‘Barbie’ movie, has opened up about the making of the film on Dua Lipa’s ‘At Your Service’ podcast, saying she was both ‘excited’ and ‘terrified’ upon embarking on the project.”It was terrifying,” Gerwig said, reports Variety’.

“There’s something about starting from that place where it’s like ‘well, anything is possible.’ It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like, where do you even begin? What would be the story?”

Gerwig, who co-wrote the film with husband Noah Baumbach, added, “That feeling that I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually, that’s where the best stuff is. I am terrified of that. Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender,’ then you’re like, ‘OK, I probably should do it.'”

As far as the plot, Gerwig didn’t offer many details but said Mattel executives were “amazing partners” who gave her “trust and freedom” with the Barbie brand.

She also credited star and producer Margot Robbie, as well as producer Tom Ackerley for making sure Gerwig was able to execute her vision.

‘Barbie’ also stars Ryan Gosling as Ken, as well as America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Rhea Perlman, Sharon Rooney, Scott Evans, Ana Cruz Kayne, Ritu Arya, Jamie Demetriou, Emerald Fennell, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa and Connor Swindells.

The film is set for a July 21, 2023 release date via Warner Bros.

NASA’s Orion spacecraft successfully enters lunar orbit

0

The US space agency on Saturday successfully performed a burn to insert Orion spacecraft under the Artemis I Moon mission into lunar orbit and Orion will fly about 40,000 miles (64,400 kms) above the moon.

Flight Controllers at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston inserted Orion into a distant retrograde orbit by firing the orbital maneuvering system engine for 1 minute and 28 seconds.

Shortly before conducting the burn, Orion was travelling more than 5,700A miles above the lunar surface, marking the farthest distance it will reach from the Moon during the mission.

While in lunar orbit, flight controllers will monitor key systems and perform checkouts while in the environment of deep space.

“Due to the distance of the orbit, it will take Orion nearly a week to complete half an orbit around the Moon, where it will exit the orbit for the return journey home,” the US space agency said in a statement.

About four days later, the spacecraft will harness the Moon’s gravitational force once again, combined with a precisely timed lunar flyby burn to slingshot Orion onto its return course to Earth ahead of a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on December 11.

“On Saturday, Orion spacecraft will break the record for farthest distance travelled by a spacecraft designed to carry humans to space and safely return them to Earth,” said NASA.

This distance is currently held by the Apollo 13 spacecraft at 248,655 miles (400,171 km) from Earth.

Orion was specifically designed for missions to carry humans farther into space than ever before.

On Artemis I, engineers are testing several aspects of the Orion spacecraft needed for deep space missions with crew.

The Artemis II mission will test the systems required for astronauts to live and breathe in deep space.

All-round performance helps Afghanistan crush Sri Lanka in opening ODI

0

Afghanistan produced a scintillating batting performance powered by opening batter Ibrahim Zadran’s 120-ball 106, including 11 boundaries, to register an easy 60-run win against Sri Lanka in the first of the three-match ODI series at the Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium.

The top-three Afghanistan batters settled the issue, scoring 232 runs between them in a total of 294/8 off 50 overs after winning the toss. Ibrahim’s co-opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz struck 53 off 55 and No. 3 Rahmat Shah made 52 off 61.

Sri Lanka was then bowled out for 234 in 38 overs with pace bowler Fazalhaq Farooqi claiming 4/49 and was backed by Gulbadin Naib, who took 3/34, and Yamin Ahmadzai 2/46.

Sri Lanka’s run chase faltered in the historic first series between the two countries as the hosts lost two wickets for 35 after 6.2 overs with Kusal Mendis sent back for one, LBW to Ahnadzai with the score on 16.

Dinesh Chandimal was clean bowled by Farooqi for 14 as Afghanistan rode into the box seat of the D/N contest. Only opening batter Pathum Nissanka, with a defiant run-a-ball 85, and Wanindu Hasaranga with a rearguard 66 off 46 stood between Afghanistan and defeat.

Nissanka and Dhananjaya de Silva steadied the innings adding 39 for the third wicket, but Sri Lanka’s hopes evaporated when de Silva was bowled by Naib for 16, making it 3/74. It became 4/90 after 14.5 overs when Charith Asalanka fell for 10. Nissanka and skipper Dasun Shanaka took the score to 137 when the latter exited for 16 off 27.

Hasaranga joined Nissanka in adding 31 for the sixth wicket. Sri Lanka’s hopes were blown off when Nissanka was bowled by Farooqi — 6/168 after 29.3 overs. From that point, Hasaranga fought a lone battle as he took on the Afghanistan attack but ran out of support before being the last to fall.

The loss puts Sri Lanka out of contention for automatic qualification for the 2023 World Cup.

Brief scores:

Afghanistan 294/8 in 50 overs (Ibrahim Zadran 106, Rahmanullah Gurbaz 53, Rahmat Shah 52, Najibullah Zadran 42; Wanindu Hasaranga 2/42) beat Sri Lanka 234 in 38 overs (Pathum Nissanka 85, Wanindu Hasaranga 66; Fazalhaq Farooki 4/49, Gulbadin Naib 3/34, Hashmatullah Shahidi 2/31) by 60 runs.

FIFA World Cup: Stoppage time goals help Iran defeat Wales 2-0

0

Reduced to 10 men, Wales were left heartbroken as Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaein scored in the stoppage time to help Iran claim a valuable 2-0 win in a Group B match of the FIFA World Cup at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium here on Friday.

Iran made the most of their one-man advantage, scoring two injury-time goals to beat Wales and maintain their chances of advancing from Group B.

Rouzbeh Cheshmi’s stunning goal in the eighth minute of stoppage time broke Wales’ resistance after goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey had been shown a straight red card for racing off his line and fouling Mehdi Taremi in the 84th minute.

Iran then added their second with practically the last kick of the game when Ramin Rezaeian finished off another rapid counter-attack with a cool finish over substitute goalkeeper Danny Ward.

Wales’ goalkeeper Hennessey was initially shown yellow for a challenge on Mehdi Taremi though it was checked by VAR with the referee swiftly overturning the decision.

ISL 2022-23: Hyderabad FC look to bounce back, face ATK Mohun Bagan

0

After a narrow loss to Kerala Blasters at home in the last round, Manolo Marquez’s Hyderabad FC (HFC) will look to bounce back as they take on ATK Mohun Bagan in an Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 match at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, here on Saturday.

HFC, who have 16 points from their seven games, will look to consolidate their place at the top of the league table with a positive result on the night.

The Mariners, who are fresh from a 3-0 loss to FC Goa in the last round, will also look to put in a strong performance, in front of their home fans, to try and push for a place at the summit of the league table.

Juan Ferrando’s men have made a mixed start to the league season, having registered three wins and two draws in their six games so far this season. Dimitri Petratos, Manvir Singh, and Liston Colaco make a formidable attacking unit, which could prove hot to handle for the traveling HFC side.

Hugo Boumous, Carl McHugh, Brendan Hamill, Lenny Rodriguez, and Vishal Kaith on goal have all been in fine form, but the Mariners will miss the services of Joni Kauko, who is expected to be out injured for a while.

Speaking to the media ahead of this game, HFC Head Coach Manolo Marquez expressed that this will be a very difficult game for both sides.

“Everyone knows the quality of the foreigners and Indian players at ATK Mohun Bagan. The ISL is an equal competition where any team can beat the other on a given day,” Marquez said.

“I think it will be a good game between two really good teams so it will be just as difficult for them as well,” he added.

Hyderabad was unlucky in the 1-0 loss to the Blasters, where Manolo’s side missed a great chunk of chances and failed to score a goal for the first time this season. Bartholomew Ogbeche, Joel Chianese, and Javi Siverio will hope to get back on the scoresheet but the form of Mohammad Yasir and Halicharan Narzary makes HFC a dangerous side going into this game.

The backline of Odei Onaindia, Chinglensana Singh, Akash Mishra, and Nikhil Poojary has been the best in the business this season, but HFC is unfortunate to lose Laxmikant Kattimani’s services. The shot-stopper is ruled out for the rest of the season, with Anuj Kumar and Gurmeet Singh fighting for the spot in the Starting XI.

But Head Coach Manolo Marquez is optimistic about his side’s chances in this game and is hoping for a strong performance from his side in Kolkata.

“Last season, we only lost four games, and after three of those defeats, we bounced back with a win. This is how you see good teams. It is impossible to win every game, but how you bounce back is what is very important,” said the Spaniard.

“We know it is a tough game but we are ready for the challenge,” he added.

Hyderabad is yet to register a goal or a point at the VYBK Stadium but this will be Manolo’s first visit there in the ISL. HFC lost to Bengaluru in the Durand Cup semifinal on a tough night in Kolkata not so long ago and they will aim to get their first result at the iconic stadium.

Millions of Android devices prone to hacking due to GPU bug: Google

0

Google researchers have warned that millions of Android smartphones are prone to hacking due to a bug in one of the graphics processing units (GPU) within the devices.

The tech giant’s Project Zero team said it had alerted the chip designer ARM about the GPU bug, and the British chip designer had fixed those vulnerabilities.

However, smartphone manufacturers including Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Google “hadn’t deployed patches to fix the vulnerabilities as of earlier this week”, claimed the Project Zero team.

“The vulnerabilities discussed are fixed by the upstream vendor, but at the time of publication, these fixes have not yet made it downstream to affected Android devices (including Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and others). Devices with a Mali GPU are currently vulnerable,” said Ian Beer of Project Zero.

Google researchers reported five issues to ARM when they were discovered between June and July 2022.

ARM fixed the issues promptly in July and August 2022, disclosing them as security issues on their Arm Mali Driver Vulnerabilities page (CVE-2022-36449) and publishing the patched driver source on their public developer website.

However, Google “discovered that all of our test devices which used Mali GPU are still vulnerable to these issues. CVE-2022-36449 is not mentioned in any downstream security bulletins”.

The researchers said users are recommended to patch as quickly as they can once a release containing security updates is available, so the same applies to vendors and companies.

“Companies need to remain vigilant, follow upstream sources closely, and do their best to provide complete patches to users as soon as possible,” the tech giant added.

According to SamMobile, Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series devices and the company’s Snapdragon-powered handsets aren’t affected by these bugs.

IIT Mandi develops method to assess earthquake-prone structures in Himalayas

0

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi have developed a method to assess the ability of buildings in the Himalayan region to withstand earthquakes.

The method is simple and allows decision-makers to prioritize any strengthening and repair work that must be undertaken to enhance the building’s resistance to earthquakes.

The findings of the research have been published in the Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering. The research has been led by Sandip Kumar Saha, Assistant Professor, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, IIT Mandi and co-authored by his Ph.D. student Yati Aggarwal.

The Himalayas are among the most earthquake-prone regions in the world, because of an ongoing collision between the Indian and the Eurasian plates.

There have been periodic earthquakes that have been devastating to these regions in terms of both life and property loss.

The Great Kashmir Earthquake of 2005 killed over 1,350 on the Indian side of Kashmir, injured at least 100,000 people, ruined tens of thousands of houses and buildings, and rendered millions of people homeless.

While earthquakes cannot be prevented, damage can certainly be prevented through the design of buildings and other infrastructures that can withstand seismic events.

The first step for ensuring the earthquake safety of existing structures is to assess their current vulnerabilities and strengths. It is neither physically nor economically viable to conduct a detailed seismic vulnerability assessment of every building.

Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) of buildings is often performed to assess building vulnerabilities at a large scale. RVS uses visual information to decide if a building is safe to occupy, or requires immediate engineering work for enhancing earthquake safety.

Existing RVS methods are based on data from different countries and are not particularly applicable to the Indian Himalayan region because of some characteristics that are unique to the buildings in this region. For example, the Himalayan region (as with much of India) has many non-engineered structures.

There is also chaotic distribution and growth of infrastructure due to a lack of awareness among the local construction workers and poor planning by the stakeholders. It is, therefore, essential to use a region-specific RVS guideline that considers factors like local construction practices, typology, etc.

Explaining the research, Saha, said: “We have devised an effective method to screen reinforced concrete (RC) buildings in the Indian Himalayan region so that repair work may be prioritized according to the condition of the buildings and the risk from impending earthquakes can be minimized.”

Through extensive field surveys, researchers have collected a large amount of data on the types of buildings present in the Mandi region and the typical attributes present in these buildings that are connected to their earthquake vulnerability.

A numerical study was also carried out to establish guidelines for counting the number of stories in hilly buildings for their RVs. Further, based on the vulnerable characteristics present in buildings, an improved RVS method was proposed.

The methodology developed for screening buildings is a simple single-page RVS form that does not require much expertise to fill. It takes into account the various vulnerability attributes that are unique to the buildings in the case study region.

Calculations made using these observations produce a seismic vulnerability score for buildings, which differentiates vulnerable buildings from the more robust ones, and allows better decision-making for maintenance and repair.

The computation process is designed such that it minimizes the possibility of human bias or subjectivity of the assessor in scoring a building.

While talking about the benefits of the research, scholar Aggarwal said, “We have shown that the proposed method is useful for segregating reinforced concrete buildings in hilly regions according to the damage that they are expected to experience in the event of an earthquake.”

The assessment of buildings in the Himalayan region is urgent and essential not only because of the region’s general earthquake vulnerability but also because a big earthquake is expected anytime due to the “seismic gap” of the past two centuries.

IND v NZ, 1st ODI: One of the most special ODI knocks I have seen, says Williamson on Latham’s 145 not out

0

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson expressed that he was in absolute awe of seeing wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham dominate India’s inexperienced bowling attack with his career-best score of 145 not out, calling the innings “one of the most special ODI knocks he has ever seen.”

In chasing 307 at Eden Park, New Zealand was in trouble at 88/3 in 19.5 overs. But Latham, the left-handed batter, took the game away from India, hitting an inexperienced bowling attack all over the park to end up unbeaten on a career-best score of 145 off 104 balls, laced with 19 fours and five sixes.

But it was his 25-run onslaught on Shardul Thakur in the 40th over, where one six and four boundaries were hit, apart from reaching the three-figure mark, which firmly tilted the match in New Zealand’s favor.

“Incredible innings from Tom Latham. Absolutely on fire. We were talking in the middle about getting through this over and that over. And then he just flicked a switch. It was one of the most special ODI knocks I have seen and it was nice to be at the other end to watch him,” said Williamson in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Latham also stitched an unbeaten 221-run stand off 165 balls with skipper Williamson, who was the perfect ally and was unconquered at 94 not out to chase down the total with seven wickets and 17 balls remaining.

“It was an over or two where he flicked a switch. We got that big over (the 40th over) and he just kept going. There were moments when we put them under pressure. Nice to make a contribution, and with Tommy going the way he was, it was about complementing. Just super special to be at the other end and see it,” added Williamson.

With the ball, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson took three wickets each while Adam Milne had a scalp to his name as India made a daunting 306/7 in the first innings. “At the halfway stage, it was a competitive total. The wicket was starting to turn a bit. And the cross-seamers got a bit out of it. But if you build partnerships here at Eden Park, you can chase anything.”

“On these drop-in pitches, you bowl full and straight, and it can be difficult. You are always in the game with the dimensions. Spin played a big role today. It was a very good wicket. The seamers did an excellent job,” stated Williamson.

Latham, who hit his second ODI century against India and took home the Player of the Match award, felt that Friday’s match was a day where everything went right for him though Washington Sundar’s off-spin challenged him a bit.

“Just one of those days when everything comes off. Having a bit of fun in the end. Just reacted to things and it paid off. It was nice to put the ball in the gaps and run hard. I guess the preparation has been nice.”

“It’s been nice and was able to hit the ball right today. Washington Sundar was getting a bit of turn and was hard to play against him. Small ground, so you can capitalize in the end. Nice partnership with Kane, who played beautifully.”

IND v NZ, 1st ODI: Latham took the game away from us in the 40th over, admits Dhawan

After losing the ODI series opener by seven wickets at Eden Park on Friday, India captain Shikhar Dhawan admitted that New Zealand’s wicketkeeper-batter Tom Latham took the game away from them through his 25-run onslaught in the 40th over of chasing 307.

In the chase, New Zealand was in trouble at 88/3 in 19.5 overs, and later, on, they needed 144 runs off the last 18 overs. Latham was on 36 runs off 43 balls at that stage and shifted his gears in admirable fashion to end up unbeaten on a career-best score of 145 off 104 balls, laced with 19 fours and five sixes.

Latham had torn into Shardul Thakur in the 40th over – pulling over deep backward square leg for six, followed by four successive boundaries, three of which were hammered through the leg-side. He would then complete his second ODI century against India with a single too long-on to take 25 runs off that over, making the result a foregone conclusion from that point.

“It’s a bit different than other grounds. Have to plan accordingly. Today we’ve bowled short of length and Latham attacked us there. That’s where he took the game away from us especially in the 40th over.”

“We misfielded on a few balls. But as I said, we were quite short to Latham, and that’s where he took the game away. He hit four boundaries in the 40th over, and that’s where the game and momentum shifted,” said Dhawan in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Feasting on an inexperienced Indian bowling attack, Latham also stitched an unbeaten 221-run stand off 165 balls with skipper Kane Williamson, who was the perfect ally and was unconquered at 94 not out to chase down 307 with 17 balls remaining.

At the innings break, Washington Sundar had said 306/7 posted by India was a par total, but it didn’t turn out to be enough for them to be 1-0 behind in the three-match series. “We felt good about the total. First 10-15 overs the ball did a lot. Really enjoy playing here. Would’ve been happier if we won but that’s part and parcel,” added Dhawan.

India was fielding two debutant pacers in Umran Malik and Arshdeep Singh. The visitors’ were also without a sixth bowling option, something which they would have used with almost all bowlers getting a hammering from Latham and Williamson.

In batting, Dhawan and Shubman Gill had a 124-run opening stand, but that came in 23.1 overs, apart from losing four wickets for 36 runs in the middle overs. With the second ODI at Hamilton on Sunday, Dhawan said India has lots of learnings to take from the loss in Auckland.

“They’re all young boys and lots of learning for them in bowling and fielding side as well. We need to implement our plans more wisely and make sure we don’t make the batsmen play on their strength. Surely lots of learning for the boys.”

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working on voice status on iOS beta for an upcoming iOS update.

It provides users the ability to share voice notes to their status updates and reports WABetaInfo.

According to the report, the microphone icon will show up when users don’t enter any text and it will allow users to post a voice note up to 30 seconds to their status updates.

Last month, the messaging platform rolled out the business tools tab on iOS beta.

The feature helps users easily reach all messaging tools available to businesses without opening WhatsApp Settings.

The new tab called ‘Tools’ would replace the old camera tab if the feature is enabled for the user’s account.

The business tools tab feature was released to a few businesses after installing the latest update of WhatsApp Business beta from TestFlight.
