European investment tool worth $27bn adopted in Greece

0

A 26.2 billion euro ($27 billion) investment tool has been adopted by the European Commission (EC), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the European Investment Fund (EIF) this week.

The InvestEU program was signed in Athens on Thursday, reports Xinhua news agency.

“InvestEU is one of the main tools we have in Europe to stimulate investment, but not simply investments to disperse money to the market, but investments focused on specific priorities that also define the new development model of the European Union,” European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas said in Athens.

The program aims to unlock investments of over 372 billion euros across Europe, to support the EU’s strategic priorities. These include the European Green Deal and the digital transition.

Within the context of the InvestEU launch, EIB Vice-President Christian Kettel Thomsen co-signed with the Greek government an agreement for the provision of 119 million euros in the form of a 25-year loan for the expansion and modernization of six research centers in Greece.

In addition, a new contractual framework was signed for the EIF to manage a further 400 million euros of financial support from Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) investments in Greece, to help small to medium-sized businesses in the country. The first InvestEU projects in Greece are expected to roll out in 2023.

Delhi govt school classroom scam: Vigilance directorate recommends probe by specialised agency

0

The Directorate of Vigilance (DoV) of the Delhi government has submitted its report to the chief secretary in a case of alleged “irregularities and corruption” in the construction of 2,405 classrooms in 193 schools and has recommended a probe.

The DoV report, prepared after seeking the responses of the Education Department and the PWD, prima facie points towards a major scam and has suggested “a detailed investigation by a specialized agency”.

The DoV has submitted the report in the matter related to a complaint dated August 22, 2022, with regards to the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) report dated February 17, 2020, highlighting glaring irregularities in the construction of additional classrooms in different schools of the Delhi government by PWD. The CVC had sent the report to the DoV seeking its comments on the matter.

The Vigilance Department has also recommended “fixing the responsibilities of the concerned officials of the Education Department and PWD” who were involved in the bungling to the tune of nearly Rs 1,300 crore. It has also recommended forwarding its findings along with the replies of PWD and the Education Department to the CVC for consideration, said a source on Friday.

Apart from several procedural lapses and violation of rules and manuals to tamper with the tender process, the DoV, in its report, has specifically underlined the role of private persons viz. “M/s Babbar and Babbar Associates”, who, without being appointed as a consultant, not only attended a crucial meeting held on June 21, 2016, in the chamber of the then PWD Minister but also influenced the Minister for post-tender changes done in the work contracts in the name of “richer specifications” that resulted into additional financial implications of Rs 205.45 crore.

In the report, the Secretary (Vigilance) has observed that “extra-constitutional agencies/persons (like M/s Babbar & Babbar Associates) were running the administration and dictating the terms and conditions to the officers and the entire administration both at the policy level as well as the execution level and were implementing such directions of a private person in a place like national capital of the country, which is not only against TBR, 1993 and other rules, regulations, and guidelines, besides being a serious threat to the securities aspect. This kind of approach will lead to administrative anarchy and chaos.”

Gujarat 1st state to get Jio True 5G across all districts

0

Reliance Jio on Friday said Gujarat has become the first state to get ‘True 5G’ in each of the 33 district headquarters.

With this, Jio ‘True 5G’ is now present in 10 cities/regions in India (including Delhi-NCR).

As a model state, Jio will launch a series of True 5G-powered initiatives across education, healthcare, agriculture, Industry 4.0, and IoT sectors in Gujarat, and then extend it across the country.

To begin with, Reliance Foundation and Jio will digitize 100 schools in Gujarat as part of an initiative called ‘Education-For-All’.

“Gujarat is now the first state to have 100 per cent district headquarters connected with our robust True 5G network. We want to showcase the real power of this technology and how it can impact a billion lives,” said Akash M Ambani, Chairman, of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited.

Jio earlier announced that ‘True 5G’ will now be available in Pune, offering unlimited 5G data at speeds of up to 1Gbps.

Starting November 23, Jio users in Pune will be invited to the Jio Welcome Offer, to experience unlimited data, at no additional cost.

Last week, Jio provided ‘True 5G’ services across the entire Delhi-NCR region, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and other major locations, becoming the only operator to do so.

Films are breaking language barriers, says ‘Kantara’ director Rishab Shetty

‘Kantara’ film director Rishab Shetty has said that films are now crossing the language barriers.

“If the content connects with the audience, the movie will be accepted as an all-Indian movie,” said Rishab Shetty, actor, director, and producer in Kannada.

‘Kantara’ directed by Rishab Shetty is his latest critically acclaimed film. On Thursday, he was speaking during a Masterclass at the International Film Festival of India on the topic of ‘Representing Cultural Diversity and Identifying New Markets’.

“Films today are crossing the language barrier. If the content connects with the audience the movie will be accepted as an All-Indian movie. I believed in the mantra that if a movie is more local and rooted, then it has a greater universal appeal,” he said.

Shetty said Kantara at its core captures the ongoing conflict between humans and nature. “It’s an amalgamation of nature, culture, and fiction. Our cultures and belief systems are rooted in every one of us. The movie was a result of the folklore I had heard and my experiences of childhood in the ‘Tulunadu’ culture. Hence, I wanted the background music of the movie to be naturally a beacon of the culture,” he said.

About the role of Shiva in Kantara, Shetty said he had a passion since childhood to play such a character.

“The idea of ‘Kantara’ was conceived during the second Covid lockdown and I shot the entire movie in my hometown Kundapura, Dakshina Kannada District in Karnataka,” he said.

Talking about his breathtaking performance in the climax of Kantara, he said the climax is imperative as that is what stays with people.

He added that the regional cinemas in the late 90s had influenced western movies. However, today they are incorporating local culture and diversity has given them the much-needed vibrancy and vividity which has been accepted by the audience.

IND v NZ, 1st ODI: Iyer, Dhawan, Gill slam half-centuries, propel India to 306/7 against New Zealand

0

Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 80 off 76 balls while captain Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill struck 72 and 50 respectively in their fourth hundred-plus stand as an opening pair this year to propel India to a challenging 306/7 in 50 overs in their ODI series opener against New Zealand at Eden Park on Friday.

On a drop-in pitch where batting wasn’t easy initially, India was aided by Dhawan and Gill having a solid opening stand of 124 in 23.1 overs after overcoming a slow start. Despite India losing four wickets for 36 runs in the middle stage of the innings, Iyer got India running towards a huge total by stitching a 94-run stand with Sanju Samson (36).

Washington Sundar applied to finish touches for India with an unbeaten blitz of 37 off 16 balls, smacking three fours and as many sixes as to take India past 300 as 96 runs came off the last 10 overs.

For New Zealand, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson took three wickets each while Adam Milne had a scalp to his name.

Brief Scores: India 306/7 in 50 overs (Shreyas Iyer 80, Shikhar Dhawan 72; Lockie Ferguson 3/59, Tim Southee 3/73) against New Zealand.

Apple not planning to acquire Manchester United

0

Tech giant Apple has no intentions to purchase Premier League club, Manchester United.

According to a source, who has direct knowledge of the matter, the report was false, reports MacRumors.

The club recently announced that its board planned to “explore strategic alternatives”, which includes a potential sale of the club.

The announcement that top player Cristiano Ronaldo would be leaving Manchester United coincided with the release of the information.

However, the tech giant has no plans to buy the club, it has been pushing into sports content, the report said.

Earlier, a report claimed that the tech giant had expressed an interest in purchasing Manchester United for around $7 billion.

Meanwhile, it was confirmed that the owner of Manchester United, Glazers, had decided to put the club up for sale, 17 years after the American family bought the United. The Glazers bought the club in 2005 but went on to become hugely unpopular.

YSRCP will draw a blank in 2024 polls: Chandrababu Naidu

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president and Leader of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly, N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday predicted that the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) will draw a blank in the next Assembly elections.

The former chief minister said that YSRCP will suffer defeat in all 175 Assembly constituencies.

He predicted that Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy will lose the election in his constituency, Pulivendula.

Naidu’s prediction is a counter to Jagan Mohan Reddy’s claim that YSRCP will make a clean sweep in the 2024 polls by winning all 175 seats.

The YSRCP leader stated on many occasions that Naidu will lose the election on his home turf Kuppam.

The TDP chief claimed that the public response he received during his visit to the Kurnool district was unprecedented during his 40-year-long career. He said this has triggered tremors in YSRCP and forced it to replace presidents of eight district units of the party.

Naidu alleged that the aquaculture is in deep crisis now in Andhra Pradesh due to the faulty policies of the state government.

Participating in a state-wide seminar on ‘Idemi Kharma Aqua rytanganiki’ (what is this ill-fate for aquaculture), Chandrababu Naidu said that the policies of the state government should always be in favor of the farming sector but this government is only trying to have an upper hand on all the sectors.

Those who ruled the State earlier had always worked for the betterment of all systems but due to the wicked policies of this government aqua farmers are suffering a lot now, Naidu observed.

Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, always thinks of his share in every decision that he takes and he works only to mint money, the TDP national president maintained.

Prices of all commodities, including petrol and diesel, are skyrocketing only in Andhra Pradesh and even the prices of essential commodities and power tariffs are highest in the state, he stated.

The ‘Badudee Badudu’ programme organized by the TDP to highlight the highest tax structure in the state evoked tremendous response from the public, Chandrababu Naidu noted.

”When the TDP was in power, we encouraged every sector, including agriculture and aquaculture but now no Minimum Support Price (MSP) is being paid for any farm product, leave alone aqua products,” he said.

The former chief minister felt that several enactments have been made only to control the aqua farmers. The new legislations are only aimed at making money by looting the farmers, he remarked.

Chandrababu Naidu promised to supply power at Rs 1.50 per unit when the TDP comes back to power and also assured subsidy to the farming sector for installing solar energy systems.

”I am promising that quality seed and feed will be supplied to the farmers,” he said and remarked that if Jagan is ready to sacrifice his commission, he too can give subsidy in power and products.

Apple makes about Rs 1.5L every second, Microsoft pockets Rs 1.1L

0

Do you know how much profit Apple makes every second? It is a staggering over $1,820 (over Rs 1.48 lakh), making the iPhone maker the world’s most profitable company — generating about $157 million (more than Rs 1,282 crore) a day.

Fellow tech giants Microsoft and Alphabet (the parent company of Google), as well as Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway, also draw in more than a thousand dollars each second, which works out at over $100 million a day, according to new research by Tipalti, an accounting software financial technology business.

At the second spot, Microsoft makes about $1,404 (Rs 1.14 lakh) per second, and Berkshire Hathaway $1,348 (about Rs 1.10 lakh) a second.

“To put this into context, the average worker in the US is projected to earn $1.7 million in their lifetime, meaning the average American will earn less in their lifetime than every company on this list earns an hour,” according to the research.

The average annual salary in the US is $74,738, or $1,433.33 per week, meaning that Apple makes $387 (27.01 percent) more per second than the average American worker makes in a whole week.

While Alphabet makes $1,277 per second at the fourth spot, Meta Platforms generates $924 in profit every second.

At the other end of the scale, Uber Technologies made a huge loss of $6.8 billion in 2021, equating to $215 every second. Despite being the world’s largest ride-hailing app, Uber has famously never turned a profit.

General Electric saw the biggest increase in year-on-year profits of $10.68 billion, while Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) is close behind with a profit increase of $10.66 billion, according to the research.

Online retail giant Amazon saw the third largest increase in profits, making $9.74 billion more in 2021 than it did in 2020.

The women’s boxers, on the other hand, recorded comfortable wins apart from Kirti’s 3-2 victory against Kazakhstan’s Assel Toktassyn.

Ravina and Bhawna outpunched their Kazakh opponents, Assem Tanatar and Gulnaz Buribayeva, respectively by unanimous decisions. Maharashtra girl Devika got the better of USA’s Aameedah Joy with a 4-1 margin.

Meanwhile, four other Indian women in action -Tamanna (50kg), Kunjarani Devi Thongam (60kg), Muskan (75kg), and Lashu Yadav (70kg) – signed off with bronze medals after defeats in their respective semifinals.

The Indian boxers have reasserted their supremacy at the prestigious championships as 11 out of 17 quarterfinalists went on to confirm medals — highest for any country at the ongoing edition, wherein close to 600 boxers from 73 countries were in the fray.

Uzbekistan is second with 10 confirmed medals while Ireland and Kazakhstan are placed jointly in the third position with seven medals each.

India’s dominance in the women’s section is another highlight of the tournament as eight pugilists have secured medals which is the most for any country followed by Kazakhstan (5) and Uzbekistan (4).

Bhawna and Devika will fight for gold on Friday along with all three male boxers while others will play their finals on Saturday.

853 tech firms lay off over 137,492 workers globally, more job cuts coming

0

As more and more companies across the spectrum sack employees amid the global meltdown, at least 853 tech companies worldwide have laid off about 137,492 employees, and the tally is only going north amid recession fears.

According to data from layoffs.fyi, in a crowdsourced database of tech layoffs, 1,388 tech companies have fired 233,483 employees since the onset of Covid-19, but 2022 has been the worst for the tech sector.

As of mid-November, more than 73,000 workers in the US tech sector have been laid off in mass-level job cuts led by companies like Meta, Twitter, Salesforce, Netflix, Cisco, Roku, and others.

Robinhood, Glossier, and Better are just a few of the tech companies that have notably trimmed their headcount in 2022, according to Crunchbase.

Big Tech companies like Amazon and PC and printer primary HP Inc have joined the global layoff season and were set to lay off more than 10,000 and up to 6,000 employees in days to come, respectively.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has warned employees that there will be more layoffs at the company in early 2023 “as leaders continue to make adjustments”.

The massive job cuts have hit several divisions, especially the Alexa virtual assistant business reportedly set to lose $10 billion this year as the voice assistant never managed to create an ongoing revenue stream.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is reportedly gearing up to lay off about 10,000 “poor performing” employees, or 6 percent of its workforce.

According to a report in The Information, Google plans to ease out 10,000 employees through a new ranking and performance improvement plan.

In India, nearly 16,000 employees have been asked to go by about 44 startups, led by edtech companies like BYJU’S, Unacademy, and Vedantu, as VC funding dried up.

Other tech startups and unicorns that have laid off employees in India include Ola, Cars24, Meesho, LEAD, MPL, Innovaccer, Udaan, and more.

Meanwhile, thousands of contractual employees have also been let go, making 2022 the harshest year for workers in the technology sector.

The startup ecosystem’s funding winter could last another 12 to 18 months and the industry may face “a lot of turmoil and volatility”, Flipkart CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy has warned.

Indian startups are going through steep hiring cuts and the hiring of permanent employees has dipped by a significant 61 percent in the last 12 months, according to the annual insights report by RazorpayX Payroll, the business banking platform of Razorpay.

Only two startups in India, Shiprocket and OneCard, attained unicorn status (valuation $1 billion and above) in the July-September period, according to the latest PwC India report.

Samsung nurtures 426 tech startups via C-Lab programme

0

Samsung has helped nurture a total of 426 startups — 182 in-house firms and 244 outside ones — through its Creative Lab (C-Lab) Outside programme since 2018, and the 244 outside startups have secured an accumulative investment of 430 billion won from various institutional investors.

When Joung Ji-won, the founder and CEO of Algocare Lab, decided to apply for a venture incubator programme of Samsung Electronics last year, her startup was in its third year of operation and already recognized for its innovative ideas for personalized nutrition management.

Still, she found it challenging to run and grow her startup in a country where big conglomerates continue to dominate the economy and are often seen squashing or acquiring nascent, small players.

“The most difficult thing was to hire talented people,” Joung told Yonhap News Agency during a press event of Samsung’s Creative Lab (C-Lab) Outside on, a startup acceleration programme to help encourage competently, prospective entrepreneurs outside the tech giant.

“Since joining the (Samsung) programme, it became much easier to recruit good talent,” she said, adding, “New hires said their parents are proud of them.”

Samsung, the world’s largest mobile phone and memory chip maker, began its in-house C-Lab program in 2012 to incubate creative ideas, turn them into business opportunities and stimulate the country’s startup ecosystem.

In 2015, Samsung introduced a spin-off programme for successful in-house startups to encourage employees’ entrepreneurship and go-for-it spirit.

Encouraged by positive responses, the tech giant, in 2018, began C-Lab Outside to nurture external, innovative tech companies younger than five years old by providing them with financial assistance of up to 100 million won ($73,700), office space, mentoring, and business consultation and cooperation.

“The purpose of C-Lab Outside is not about making financial gains, but quickly discovering promising young innovators and helping them firmly take root and grow into a big tree,” Hahn In-Kuk, head of Creativity & Innovation Center at Samsung Electronics, said during the event.

Hahn said Samsung is planning to “scale up” the program starting next year, where it will continuously check up on the growth of the program’s former participants, even after the one-year program ends, and make an investment, if necessary.

Lee Sang-min, CEO of Nobility, which makes autonomous delivery robots, said he found Samsung’s counseling service most helpful for running his five-year-old startup.

“There are many critical moments when a strategic decision needs to be made timely, and it was a huge relief that I could get help and mentoring services from Samsung,” said Lee, a graduate of mechanical engineering at Yonsei University.

He said his nascent venture was neither well-organized nor had the necessary manpower before participating in the program.

“We hadn’t even had a chief financial officer up until we had about 30-40 employees,” he said.

Neubility, founded in November 2017, successfully secured an investment total of 23 billion won this year, with the help of Samsung. The company now employs 75 people.

A pioneer in developing self-driving delivery robots in South Korea, the company has teamed up with Samsung Welstory, a Samsung catering subsidiary, to launch food delivery by robotic couriers in golf clubs.

Already 54 such autonomous robots, called “Neubie,” which are equipped with a camera system that enables them to perceive their environment and detect obstacles, are in service around the country. The startup is set to sign a deal to launch an additional 100 robots at golf courses, according to Lee.

Donal Bisht on challenges she faced while doing underwater stunts in ‘Tu Zakhm Hai’

Ex-‘Bigg Boss 15’ contestant Donal Bisht talks about how she prepared for her role and braved several injuries while shooting for the show ‘Tu Zakhm Hai’ starring Gashmeer Mahajani. She shares how she held her breath underwater despite the fact that she has a water phobia.

In the web series, ‘Tu Zakhm Hai’ she is playing the character of Kavya Grewal, who is a clinical psychologist. “She’s very soft from the outside but from inside she is like a hard nut. She’s very strong mentally and she helps out people through her mental abilities. She understands people and how she helps them to get out from the pain which these people are facing.”

Donal recalls doing a sequence underwater and says: “I needed to be within the water and maintain my breath. Since I am not a swimmer, I didn’t know how to hold my breath for this long. That was very tough for me and that too for many angles and many shots. However, I am an actor and I really love my job. That zeal possibly makes me able to do all that.”

The 28-year-old actress, who is known for her roles in ‘Ek Deewaana Tha’, and ‘Roop – Mard Ka Naya Swaroop’ shares how she performed all the stunts on her own without the body double.

She adds: “I did it without the body double and normally actors don’t do it if they don’t know certain things which are fair but I think I want to experience all forms of adventures in my life and want to do things on my own, so I took it and did it. And actors themselves doing it becomes easier for the director also or for the shows or film to take the shots.”

“I am very grateful to God and happy that my hard work is paying me off with all the love and appreciation I am getting from my audiences and receiving the awards for my performances in ‘Tu Zakhm Hai’ and it’s making me work harder and never let down my audiences. I can’t thank enough my fans for showering so much love on my character Kavya,” concludes Donal expressing her gratitude towards the audience for appreciating her character in the series.

She is making her Telugu debut with ‘Kumbhakarna’ which was earlier called ‘Dare To Sleep’. ‘Tu Zakhm Hai’ streams on MX Player.

UP Police claim: ‘Rats ate up 581 kg marijuana’

0

Bizarre as it may sound, the Mathura police have claimed that rats ate up over 500 kilograms of marijuana.

According to a report submitted by Mathura police to a special Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (1985) court, rats “ate” over 500 kg of marijuana, confiscated and stored in the warehouses of Shergarh and Highway police stations.

Earlier this year, the court had asked Mathura police to produce the marijuana recovered in a case registered under the NDPS Act.

The additional district judge has ordered SSP Mathura Abhishek Yadav to get rid of the ‘mice menace’ and then deliver proof that rats actually consumed 581 kg, to be precise, of marijuana worth Rs 60 lakhs.

The officers told the judge that mice and rates, though small in size, do not fear the police.

The court has also issued five-point directions for the auction/disposal of weeds stored in police warehouses.

“Time-bound action will be taken in compliance with the court orders,” said acting senior superintendent of police (SSP), Mathura, Martand P. Singh while the special public prosecutor Ranveer Singh said, “The SHOs of Shergarh and Highway police stations have claimed that 581 kg of weed stored in warehouses was destroyed by the rats. The cops have been finding it impossible to protect substances kept in the said storage areas. The court has ordered the police to produce evidence regarding the claim and set November 26 as the next hearing date.”

Notably, in May 2020, three men smuggling weed in a truck were arrested in Mathura. The truck was intercepted near Jatwari village in the Shergarh area and 386 kg of weed hidden in millet bags was recovered from the vehicle. The three accused were booked under the NDPS Act and sent to judicial custody.

The court had ordered the police to produce the weed recovered in the case.
