PKL 9: Our games have been similar to the recent India-Pakistan match, says Haryana Steelers’ coach

0

Haryana Steelers came roaring back to form after registering a 43-24 victory over Telugu Titans in the vivo Pro Kabaddi League Season 9 at the Shree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

Speaking about the victory, the Haryana Steelers Head Coach Manpreet Singh said, “We have mostly lost close games in this season so far. We could’ve won a lot of those games. We have a well-balanced side so we were confident that we would win this game.”

When asked if the team needs to change anything ahead of the next leg in Pune, the Head Coach said, “We don’t need to change anything. Our matches have been similar to the recent India-Pakistan cricket match. Virat Kohli took India over the line in the last moment, but anyone could’ve won that game. We have also lost games in the last moment.”

Manpreet also said that the team isn’t focusing on the points table, “Things will keep going up and down on the points table. We aren’t focussing on that. We are just looking to give our best possible performance. We’ll look to do even better in Pune.”

The Haryana Steelers defender Joginder Narwal said that the team has learned a lot from the Bengaluru leg, “We learned a lot during our matches in Bengaluru, especially from the narrow losses. And we applied those learnings to clinch a great victory against Telugu Titans. Our coach also keeps telling us to learn from our mistakes and we’ve been trying to do that.”

The Haryana Steelers will be next seen in action against Puneri Paltan at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, Pune on Friday.

NASA’s Lucy spacecraft captures images of Earth, Moon ahead of gravity assist

0

A NASA spacecraft named Lucy, the first mission to the Jupiter Trojan asteroids, has captured a stunning image of Earth, along with a photo of the Earth and the Moon, as part of gravity assistance to gain some of the orbital energy it needs to travel to this never-before-visited population of asteroids.

NASA’s Lucy spacecraft captured the image of Earth at a distance of 620,000 km. The upper left of the image includes a view of Hadar, Ethiopia, home to the 3.2 million-year-old human ancestor fossil for which the spacecraft was named, the US space agency said in a statement.

Lucy is the first mission to explore the Jupiter Trojan asteroids, an ancient population of asteroid “fossils” that orbit around the Sun at the same distance as Jupiter.

To reach these distant asteroids, the Lucy spacecraft’s trajectory includes three Earth gravity assists to boost it on its journey to these enigmatic asteroids.

The image was taken with Lucy’s Terminal Tracking Camera (T2CAM) system, a pair of identical cameras that are responsible for tracking the asteroids during Lucy’s high-speed encounters.

The T2CAM system was designed, built, and tested by Malin Space Science Systems; Lockheed Martin Integrated the T2CAMs onto the Lucy spacecraft and operates them.

Lucy’s spacecraft also captured an image of the Earth and the Moon from a distance of 1.4 million km.

These Earth flybys provide Lucy with the speed required to reach the Trojan asteroids – small bodies that orbit the Sun at the same distance as Jupiter.

On its 12-year journey, Lucy will fly by a record-breaking number of asteroids and survey their diversity, looking for clues to better understand the formation of the solar system.

After cyclone, pests destroyed records: Indian chess federation

0

Is the headquarters of the All India Chess Federation (AICF) office at the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here infested with pests?

Well, it seems so based on the reason given by AICF while denying the information sought under the Right to Information (RTI) Act by Fide Master (FM) Gurpreet Pal Singh, a chess player, as per the order of Chief Information Commission’s (CIC).

“The AICF had earlier told the Competition Commission of India (CCI) that its records were destroyed by the Chennai floods in 2015,” Singh told Media.

At a hearing held at the Chief Information Commission’s (CIC) office on April 5, the AICF’s Chief Public Information Officer (CPIO) had submitted that the requisite information pertains to the Chennai office and apprised the bench that the relevant records have been destroyed/damaged due to pest.

“Upon being queried by the Commission whether he has any proof for the same, he could not provide a cogent reply,” the CIC order notes.

“Earlier AICF had told the Competition Commission of India (CCI) that its records were damaged due to flooding due to a cyclone,” Singh said.

Be that as it may, the CIC has ordered AICF to provide the details sought by Singh.

The CIC also lashed out at CPIO for providing mindless and incongruous and misleading replies, which were nothing but a clear dereliction of duty cast upon him under the RTI Act.

In 2019, Singh sought the following information from AICF with bifurcation as to the lawyer fees, travel expenditures, counseling fees, and others:

(a) Year-wise expenditure incurred by AICF in a case filed by them against the CCI’s order before the Madras High Court.

(b) Year-wise expenditure incurred on defending the case before CCI in Delhi in case no. 79/2011, Hemant Sharma vs AICF.

(c) Total expenditure incurred by AICF to date in an appeal filed before NCLAT, Delhi against CCI, and

(d) Total expenditure incurred in filing a case before the Madras High Court in a case filed by it against the CIC and others.

Some years back, the CCI had held that the conduct of AICF was in contravention of Section 4 of the Competition Act, 2002, and also imposed a penalty of Rs 6,92,350 under Section 27(b) of the Competition Act, 2002.

The AICF has gone on appeal against the CCI order at NCLAT.

Singh said the Indian Chess Federation would have spent several times over and above the fine of Rs. 6.92 lakh levied by the CCI. For arguing the case in CCI, the AICF lawyers came from Chennai.

“The AICF is spending players’ money in fighting legal cases. The cases are filed so that some people can retain their power. Actually, the AICF funds should be spent for players’ benefit like holding coaching camps,” Singh said.

He also wondered as to the reason for AICF seeking adjournments at NCLAT.

T20 World Cup: Balbirnie-Tucker stand gives Ireland competitive 157-run total v England

0

Ireland skipper Andy Balbirnie and wicketkeeper-batter Lorcan Tucker strung an 82-run stand to help the side post a competitive 157 all out in 19.2 overs to put England under pressure in the ICC T20 World Cup Super-12 Group 1 game at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here on Wednesday.

Balbirnie (62 off 47) and Tucker (34 off 27) batted intelligently against England’s powerful bowling line-up as Ireland were all out for a 150-plus total in overcast conditions and then reduced England to 24/2 in four overs.

The pair found the boundaries with ease and at one stage had Ireland on track for a score of around 200 before England’s bowlers fought back well late to restrict the damage.

Pace bowler Mark Wood (3/34) was profligate early as he consistently hit speeds greater than 150km/h, while all-rounders Liam Livingstone (3/17) and Sam Curran (2/30) bowled well throughout.

England named the same XI that defeated Afghanistan by five wickets on Saturday, while Ireland made one change to their side that fell to a disappointing nine-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka on Sunday, according to ICC.

Seamer Fionn Hand came in for his first match of the tournament, with experienced spinner Simi Singh making way.

Ireland: Paul Stirling, Andy Balbirnie (c), Lorcan Tucker (wk), Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Fionn Hand, Barry McCarthy, Josh Little

England: Jos Buttler (c, wk), Alex Hales, Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

Apple gives Meta another jolt, puts 30% tax on ‘post boosting’ on App Store

0

Apple-Meta’s war over App Store has intensified with new updates that require iOS developers to give Apple a 30 percent cut on the sales of ‘boosts’ for posts in a social media app.

The move will affect Facebook and Instagram which let people pay to boost the reach of their posts, reports The Verge.

It is also the first time that Apple has directly taxed advertising in iOS apps.

“Apple continues to evolve its policies to grow their own business while undercutting others in the digital economy,” a Meta spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report late on Tuesday.

Apple previously said it didn’t take a share of developer advertising revenue, and “now apparently changed its mind”.

“We remain committed to offering small businesses simple ways to run ads and grow their businesses on our apps,” said Meta.

Paying to boost posts is a common feature across Meta’s family of apps, all well as Twitter and the Chinese short-form video platform TikTok.

In a statement shared with The Verge, an Apple spokesperson said the App Store has long taken a cut of digital goods and services.

“Boosting, which allows an individual or organization to pay to increase the reach of a post or profile, is a digital service — so of course In-App Purchase is required. This has always been the case and there are many examples of apps that do it successfully,” the Apple spokesperson was quoted as saying.

Apple’s privacy changes in the App Store called App Tracking Transparency (ATT) have already given a boost to its ad business, and the iPhone maker has managed to break the Facebook-Google advertising monopoly in the online search market.

Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg have admitted that Apple iOS privacy changes will cost the company a whopping $10 billion in 2022.

Meta has also accused Apple of favoring Google over app-based platforms like Facebook with its privacy policies.

Apple’s iOS 14.5 update, released in April 2021, came with an ATT feature that has affected digital advertising for tech giants.

Spotify says Apple is destroying its audiobook store by ‘choking competition’

0

Leading music streaming platform Spotify has said that Apple is ruining its audiobook store by “choking competition”.

Apple’s limitations are harmful to both creators and users, as it continues to prevent Spotify and other applications from offering a seamless user experience, the company said in a blog post.

According to the platform, Apple’s restrictions are “far too complicated and confusing,” and they change “arbitrarily, making them impossible to interpret.”

The market for audiobooks has huge potential for growth and more authors could be discovered by new listeners, but the buying flow the company has been forced into is unnecessarily restricting that possibility.

“Apple continues to dictate what online innovation looks like, doing serious harm to the internet economy, choking competition and the imagination of app developers. Apple has shown time and again that it will not self-regulate and has no real incentive to change,” said Daniel Ek, CEO of Spotify.

“With our audiobooks launch, Apple has once again proven just how brazen it is willing to be with its App Store rules, constantly shifting the goalposts to disadvantage their competitors,” he added.

Meanwhile, recently, the company announced that it had acquired Dublin-based Kinzen, a global leader in protecting online communities from harmful content.

Musk to sign takeover deal as Twitter employees slam his layoff threat

0

Elon Musk has reportedly told investors and bankers that he is going to close the $44 billion Twitter takeover deal by Friday, as employees at the micro-blogging platform protest his plan to fire 75 percent of the Twitter workforce.

Musk must complete the acquisition by Friday or face the lawsuit at a Delaware court in the US, as per the deadline given by the judge.

The world’s richest man, who has raised $13 billion as loan from banks and lenders to go ahead with the takeover deal, is set to sign the papers necessary to get the deal closed, according to reports.

Meanwhile, a Time report said that Twitter employees have written an open letter to the board of directors and Musk, criticizing his plans to lay off 75 percent of the workforce.

“Musk’s plan to lay off 75 percent of Twitter workers will hurt Twitter’s ability to serve the public conversation. A threat of this magnitude is reckless, undermines our users’ and customers’ trust in our platform, and is a transparent act of worker intimidation,” the draft letter read.

“We believe the public conversation is in jeopardy,” they added.

Twitter has significant effects on societies and communities across the globe.

“A threat to workers at Twitter is a threat to Twitter’s future. These threats have an impact on us as workers and demonstrate a fundamental disconnect with the realities of operating Twitter. They threaten our livelihoods, access to essential healthcare, and the ability for visa holders to stay in the country they work in,” the employees said in the open letter.

They called on Twitter management and Musk to “cease these negligent layoff threats”.

“As workers, we deserve concrete commitments so we can continue to preserve the integrity of our platform,” they said.

Biden’s job approval back down to 40%: Poll

0

The latest poll has revealed that US President Joe Biden’s job approval rating has slipped back to 40 percent.

The number was a step down from the 44 percent measured in August but still above his term-low 38 percent from July, shows the new Gallup poll released on Tuesday.

In all other months in 2022, Biden’s approval rating had been in the range between 40 percent and 42 percent, reports Xinhua news agency.

The latest survey conducted earlier this month found that 56 percent of Americans disapprove of Biden’s performance.

His approval ratings continued to be starkly different by political party, with 85 percent of Democrats and only 4 percent of Republicans approving.

The 81-point gap in party ratings matches the average for Biden’s presidency to date.

Thirty-nine percent of political independents approve of the job Biden is doing, slightly above the 36 percent average approval rating among independents from January to September.

Americans’ evaluations of the job Biden is doing as president continue to be more negative than positive, as they have for over a year now.

Given the relationship between low job approval ratings and midterm election outcomes, Biden’s unpopularity is likely to be a drag on his fellow Democrats’ chances in the November 8 mid-term elections, according to Gallup.

T20 World Cup: Hardik Pandya wants to play all matches; not looking at resting anyone, says Mhambrey

0

Citing the balance and experience which Hardik Pandya brings to the Indian team, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey quashed the possibility of him or any other player in the side being rested from Thursday’s Super 12 match against the Netherlands at the Sydney Cricket Ground, saying that the fast-bowling all-rounder wants to play all matches in the tournament.

Pandya had been one of the main architects in India’s thrilling four-wicket victory over Pakistan in their T20 World Cup opening match at a packed Melbourne Cricket Ground, picking 3/30 in four overs of pace and making 40 off 37 balls while sharing a match-winning stand of 113 off 77 deliveries with Virat Kohli (82 not out off 53 balls) for the fifth wicket in a chase of 160.

Though by the end of the innings Pandya had some cramps, there were speculations that he could be rested from India’s second Group 2 match against the Netherlands. But Mhambrey brushed all of those talks aside.

“The strategy is that Hardik wants to play all matches, which is an important thing. We are not looking at resting anybody and that sort of thinking is not there for any player. Hardik is a very important player for us. He adds to the balance, bowls, and bats as well. Other than that, the attitude which he has on the ground is of note, just like he played a crucial inning in the last match,” he said in the pre-match press conference.

With India in deep trouble at 31/4 in chasing 160 against Pakistan, Kohli and Pandya took their time before unleashing a stunning fightback to get victory on the last ball of the chase. Mhambrey went on to explain the importance of Pandya’s role in propelling Kohli to spearhead the successful chase under immense pressure.

“Yes, Virat had finished the game for us. But there’s a stage, where you need an experienced player, who can recognize a moment like if we take this game till the end, pressure will obviously shift on them. To acknowledge that, we do need experience. So, in the performance of Virat, you can give lots of credit to Hardik because when he went inside, the conditions were difficult, and were 31 for the loss of four wickets, which was not an easy phase.

“But the discussion which an experienced player brings and the discussions which happen, due to that, Virat got a lot of help. Hardik adds that balance to the team; he has the game, but other than that, he has played a lot of cricket and the experience he adds is irreplaceable. We aren’t even talking about the decisions to rest anyone, because we see that every match is important till the finals.”

Quizzed on whether Pandya bowling his four full overs will direct India to get an extra batter in the playing eleven, Mhambrey felt the move is completely dependent upon the conditions on offer for any particular match in the tournament.

“It’s good that Hardik gives you four overs options and that’s what we wanted. He brings a lot of balance to the team. He’s been very effective for us; he’s picked wickets for us and that’s important. Getting a batter in or the different combinations will purely depend on the team we are playing and also the conditions.”

Mhambrey signed off by reiterating that the Indian team management isn’t looking to rest anyone from certain matches in the future. “When you have the momentum going in a tournament, you need individuals to be in the form as well. For someone who hasn’t got the opportunity to bat, every game becomes important, and aren’t looking at resting anybody.”

Google says reviewing CCI’s decision to evaluate next steps

0

Hit hard by two back-to-back fines by the Competition Commission of India (CCI), Google on Wednesday said that it is committed to its users and developers and reviewing the decision to evaluate the next steps.

The Indian regulator on Tuesday slapped its second penalty on Google — this time to the tune of around $113 million (Rs 936 crore) — for abusing its dominant position with respect to its Play Store policies.

Last week, the competition watchdog imposed a penalty of Rs 1,337.76 crore on Google for abusing its dominant position in multiple markets in the Android mobile device ecosystem.

In a statement, Google said that the Indian developers have benefited from the technology, security, consumer protections, and unrivaled choice and flexibility that Android and Google Play provide.

“And, by keeping costs low, our model has powered India’s digital transformation and expanded access for hundreds of millions of Indians. We remain committed to our users and developers and are reviewing the decision to evaluate the next steps,” a Google spokesperson said.

In its fresh ruling, the regulator found Google to be dominant in the markets for licensable OS for smart mobile devices and market for app stores for Android smart mobile OS, in India.

“Selling of in-app digital goods constitutes an important means for app developers to monetize their creations/innovations. However, for in-app digital goods to be distributed to purchasing users, developers must configure their apps so that all purchases of the digital goods go through Google’s payment system, which processes the transactions,” it said.

India is Google’s largest market by users.

The CCI also directed Google to cease and desist from indulging in anti-competitive practices.

The tech giant has been given a time of 30 days to provide the requisite financial details and supporting documents.

Pakistan is out of FATF Grey List, but will leopard change its spots on proxy terror?

0

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) removed (October 21) Pakistan from its “grey list” after more than four years.

The multilateral watchdog said Islamabad would continue its work to further improve systems to combat terror financing and money laundering.

At the conclusion of FATF’s two-day plenary meeting in Paris, the body’s president, T. Raja Kumar of Singapore, announced that Pakistan was being taken off the grey list in line with a consensus decision by the watchdog’s 39 member countries.

The reforms carried out by Islamabad were good for the security and stability of Pakistan and the region, he said.
While Pakistan may have exited from the ‘Grey List’, its history of support to terrorist individuals and entities shows that it is unlikely to reform itself into a good cop overnight!

A recent article by Aparna Rawal for South Asia Voices (October 17) informs that the deep state in Pakistan remains synonymous with an intricate network of terror, narcotics and funding which span the globe. At the forefront of Pakistan’s operations is D Company and Haqqani Network.

Most of these crime syndicates thrive through extortions, violence, kidnappings and even assassinations while re-routing funds through formal channels like charities or legitimate business enterprises. A quick glance at the past shows how the deep state in Pakistan used money laundering for terror and narcotics trading in its global operations.

Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) is known to support various entities, terror outfits or rackets which would benefit their well-articulated “Gaza-i-Hind” (bleed India with thousand cuts) strategy against India and which will also allow them to exert their influence in the South Asian regions by all possible means.

This is also one of the reasons why Dawood Ibrahim proved to be effective. To be indispensable to the ISI, he funded ISI-funded terror organizations, while in exchange he received ISI protection.

This arrangement served the twin purposes, of firstly, providing a front for ISI’s dealings with terror outfits and secondly, for moving funds required to covertly support the outfits.

Since 2016, the ISI has been aggressively and covertly operating in activities to destabilize India. There have been many Pakistani sleeper cells active in India, with the D Company’s affiliations.

Arms transportation and terror funding are becoming more evident through the hawala channels. Several ISI-trained components are being tasked to carry out reconnaissance missions against India.

Recently, the D Company-ISI hand was exposed through various crackdowns on terror modulesconducted by Indian security agencies.

On September 22, an ISI agent Lal Mohammed was shot dead in Nepal. He delivered counterfeit Indian currency from Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh to India.

Lal used to provide logistical support to ISI and had links to Dawood Ibrahim and his D Company.

Apart from D Company’s own terrorist activities, the organization has maintained relations with other terror outfits and even made donations to them through their front companies.

On September 26, Riyaz Bhatti was also arrested in an extortion case.

Besides, henchmen employed for extortion and other criminal activities, Dawood has several agents who make investments on his behalf worldwide.

Rasheed Saeed is a known D Company agent who reportedly handles the revenues coming to the company under Chhota Shakeel.

Saeed’s cover has been managing director of a Mumbai-based events company that is known for hosting promotional events for Bollywood films.

Tiger Memon continues to be a partner in a firm that deals in steel exports. Recently, five of D Company’s operatives were arrested by the Mumbai Crime Branch, Anti Extortion Cell.

This occurred, months after Dawood’s close aide, and brother-in-law of Chota Shakeel, Salim Fruit was arrested in August 2022 by the NIA. He was accused of extorting Rs 62 lakh.

In this context, it is important to mention that most cases relating to money laundering have their origins in the covert support provided to the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, by Pakistan’s ISI.

The informal channels stem from the mutual understanding for support of the mujahideen cause, which was not limited to a particular region, but extended to a global network for waging jihad.

For several years, Pakistan’s ISI funnelled money to the Mujahideen in Afghanistan with the help of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, founded by Agha Hasan Abedi, a Pakistani businessman.

Its primary purpose was ostensibly to fund armed groups abroad.

The Bank of Credit and Commerce International was also responsible for transferring funds and arms to the Iran-Contra arms deal.

From the 1970s to the 1980s, Bank of Credit and Commerce International had set up a quid pro quo approach with all their clients. It would provide unsecured loans to its wealthy clients in exchange for access to the global markets. Their clients included a Saudi financier who received a loan of $500 million and in return was entrusted to buy a controlling interest on Bank of Credit and Commerce International’s behalf in two American banks.

The organization became famous for providing unsecured loans to wealthy investors in the Middle East.

Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, another client of BCCI, was able to utilise their service to transfer most of his oil revenue to investments globally.

This also included the clandestine funding of politically volatile projects such as Pakistan’s nuclear programme in the 1980s.

In June 2018, the FATF had placed Pakistan on its list of countries under increased monitoring, or the so-called grey list, for its failure to tackle terror financing, especially the activities of UN-designated terror groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed.

Pakistan was given two action plans with 34 action items to strengthen its ability to counter both fund-raising by terrorists and money laundering. FATF action against Pakistan demonstrates the urgent global requirement to cut terror funding to contain terror activities in the South Asian region.

The lesson learnt is that while Pakistan has exited the grey list, hidden below the surface, it is business as usual for the deep state. Nothing is likely to ever change in Pakistan!

From Rohini to LVM3, ISRO’s changing policy for rocket names

0

From names like Rohini for its sounding rockets, the Indian space agency has come to name its heavy-lift rocket with three alphabets and a number – such as LVM3.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) could have done better in naming the rocket that will compete with the likes of Ariane, and Falcon rockets in the global market with a better name than the unimaginative LVM3 is the general view gleaned by Media.

A short and nice name rooted in Indian tradition – even Bharat – would have been better as the rocket will be offered for outsiders on a commercial basis.

On October 23, ISRO’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-MkIII (GSLV MkIII), renamed LVM3 (Launch Vehicle Mk3) put into orbit UK-based OneWeb’s 36 satellites successfully.

Though the GSLV MkIII and the LVM3 are the same, the rocket flying Indian satellite will be badged as GSLV MkIII and the one that flies with third-party satellites will be badged as LVM3.

“The GSLV is not offered for launch service. It meets only internal demand. Only the PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and LVM3 are in the commercial launch market,” ISRO Chairman S. Somanath told the media.

“The name Rohini for India’s sounding rocket was chosen by (space program pioneer) Vikram Sarabhai, late Chairman. The star has a ‘V-shaped architecture in the sky, like an arrow in the sky,” Dr. P. Pramod Kale, retired Director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), told media.

After Rohini, ISRO started developing satellite launch vehicles (SLV) or rockets and when the third configuration out of five was selected, the rocket was called SLV3, Dr. M.Y.S. Prasad, retired Director of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), told media.

The SLV3 carried a satellite called Rohini.

When the features of SLV3 were augmented, the vehicle was called Augmented SLV (ASLV). The ASLV rocket had carried the Stretched Rohini Satellite Series or SROSS.

Then came the development of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) that would launch satellites orbiting from one pole to another pole.

The Indian space agency has developed different variants of the PSLV rocket to carry satellites of varying weights.

Following the PSLV, the ISRO developed a heavier rocket to carry communication satellites that would be put in geostationary orbit, that is, Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

While the first-generation GSLV has been phased out, the second and third-generation GSLVs are in service.

It is the third generation GSLV that orbited the 36 OneWeb satellites on October 23.

In between, to cater to the demand for launching small satellites weighing up to 500 kg, the ISRO recently developed a smaller rocket called Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).

Retired ISRO officials had told media that the space agency could have chosen some other name for the small rocket than a long-winding SSLV.

“It is time to look into our scriptures, and culture and come up with a name that would signify features of the new rocket and its power,” former ISRO Chairman G. Madhavan Nair had told media.

Incidentally, private-sector rocket startups like Agnikul Cosmos and Skyroot Aerospace have named their rockets Agnibaan and Vikram, respectively.

“Space scientists were more focused on their work than on propaganda. The rockets were named based on their orbiting the satellites,” Prasad said.

Perhaps the rocket was named in a secular manner, he added.

According to him, ISRO officials used to refer to GSLV MkIII as LVM3 during their discussions when the rocket was under development.

While ISRO officials also called the 640-tonne GSLV Mk III rocket “fat boy”, the media nicknamed it ‘Bahubali’, after the hero of the successful film “Bahubali” who lifts a heavy ‘Lingam’.

According to Prasad, the Ariane rocket belonging to the European space agency Arianespace gets its name from the French mythological character Ariane. The Chinese and Russian rockets – Long March and Soyuz respectively – got their names from their ideologies and history.

“If India is planning to name its rockets based on historical personalities then the name ‘Tipu’ will be apt as Tipu Sultan was the first Indian to use rockets in war,” Prasad added.

The Indian defense establishment has named its missiles as BrahMos, Agni, Akash, Nag, Prithvi, Rudram, and others.

India also named its initial satellites after famous mathematician-astronomer Aryabhatta, and mathematicians Bhaskara I and Bhaskara II.

Sometime later, the thinking within the ISRO changed. The satellites were named in line with the purpose for which they were launched.

A noticeable change in the naming happened with the Indian satellite navigation system. Initially named the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), it was finally renamed NavIC – taking the first three letters from the word navigation and the first two letters from the words ‘Indian Constellation’.

A couple of years back, ISRO decided on a new naming policy for its satellites. The earth observation satellites were named EOS followed by a number and the communication satellites CMS followed by a number.

Tech giant Apple on Tuesday called on its global supply chain to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and use a holistic approach to decarbonization.

Apple also announced new initiatives and investments aimed at promoting climate solutions for communities and decarbonizing the global economy.

“Fighting climate change remains one of Apple’s most urgent priorities and moments like this put action to those words,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.

“We’re looking forward to continued partnership with our suppliers to make Apple’s supply chain carbon neutral by 2030. Climate action at Apple doesn’t stop at our doors, and in this work, we’re determined to be a ripple in the pond that creates a bigger change,” he added.

According to Apple, its worldwide corporate operations have been carbon neutral since 2020, and the company is laser-focused on achieving its ambitious goal of becoming carbon neutral throughout its entire global supply chain and the life cycle of every product.

As part of Apple’s supplier engagement, the company is partnering with its worldwide supply chain to urge accelerated action to achieve carbon neutrality for their Apple-related corporate operations, it added.

Additionally, the company encourages suppliers to address greenhouse gas emissions beyond Apple production.

The company is also offering a suite of free e-learning resources and live training through its “Clean Energy Programme” that will help suppliers meet their commitments and go even further.

This will also allow work closely with its suppliers and local partners to identify effective solutions for renewable energy and carbon removal.

Moreover, customers in the US can now play a role in decreasing the carbon footprint of iPhones with Clean Energy Charging.

Starting this month, the feature is available in the US through iOS 16 that will look at the source of electricity during expected charge times in order to optimize for cleaner energy sources such as solar or wind, according to a report.

The Delhi Police seized more than 17,000 kg of firecrackers in the last 24 days, but many people in the national capital still got hold of them and used them on Diwali on Tuesday, as evident by several videos and pictures doing rounds on social media.

Many Twitter users, including some politicians, on the eve of Diwali, shared several videos and pictures of people violating the rules and bursting crackers. A few videos also showed some of the politicians bursting crackers either in front of their houses or on the rooftop.

“Selective ban against Hindu festivals will never work. When the unsuccessful government and judiciary try to blame the rising pollution on children’s festivals, then this will happen,” Delhi BJP leader, Kapil Mishra tweeted while sharing a video with an overview of an area where crackers were being burst.

“Seems all of Delhi is going to be behind bars for the next six months. By the way, Happy Diwali to all Delhiites,” another Twitter user wrote while tagging a video showing high-intensity firecrackers on and off ground and even in mid-air.

Tajinder Pal Bagga, another BJP politician, shared several videos on social media, defying the firecracker ban on Diwali to take a jibe at the Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government.

Locals claimed that the firecrackers were being sold in JJ clusters of Wazirpur, Madangir, Narela, and Wazirabad. Some of the crackers were also being sold in Nihal Vihar, Punjabi Basti, Janta Market, and Syed Gaon, among others.

“My neighbor had bought crackers from Farukh Nagar near Gurugram,” said a resident of Maidangarhi near Chattarpur, requesting anonymity.

According to data shared by Delhi Police, from October 1 to 24, a total of 17,357.134 kg firecrackers were seized which were kept for storage or sale and a total of 150 firecrackers sales were registered.

“A total of 3.608 kg crackers were seized for bursting and 23 cases were registered for bursting firecrackers across the city,” the data said.

Since the ban on the sale of firecrackers was imposed in the national capital, the police teams in separate operations across the city had arrested many people for selling, storing, and supplying illegal firecrackers, said a senior police official.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday the AAP government claimed that this year pollution level in the national capital was the lowest after Diwali compared to the last five years.

Sharing the data of the last five years, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that this year there has been a reduction of 30 percent in pollution compared to last year itself and 30 percent lesser firecrackers were burst in Delhi this Diwali, showing that people are becoming aware.

Kerala band accuses ‘Kantara’ of plagiarising its song for ‘Varaha Roopam’

The Kannada film ‘Kantara’ continues to be in the news. After raking in impressive collections, the film is now gaining traction on the Internet because of an alleged claim of plagiarism over one of its tracks titled ‘Varaha Roopam’.

A Kerala-based band ‘Thaikkudam Bridge’ has accused the makers of the Kannada film of ripping off their song ‘Navarasam’. ‘Varaha Roopam’ features the same melody as that of ‘Navarasam’ and follows the same chord progression on guitars only difference being a prominent Nadaswaram in the former while ‘Navarasam’ has the same spectrum of notes played on Carnatic violin.

The band expressed their displeasure on social media and released a statement with regard to the same. They also mentioned they’re mulling over taking legal action against the team of ‘Kantara’ and its producers, Hombale Films to settle the dispute and infringement of their intellectual property.

Sharing the album cover of their song next to the poster of ‘Varaha Roopam’, they wrote in the caption, “From our and our partner’s standpoint, we would like our listeners to know that Thaikkudam Bridge is in no way or form affiliated with ‘Kantara’. The unavoidable similarities between our IP ‘Navarasam’ and ‘Varaha Roopam; in terms of audio is, therefore, a blatant infringement of copyright laws.”

They further mentioned, “From our standpoint, the line between ‘Inspired’ and ‘Plagiarized’ is distinct and indisputable and therefore we will be seeking legal action against the creative team responsible for this. There has been no acknowledgment of our rights over the content and the song is propagated as an Original piece of work by the movie’s creative team”.

In the film, ‘Varaha Roopam’ comes at an important plot point during the dance performance of Buta Kola when the Guliga God possesses the body of one of the characters.
