Video gaming can lead to better cognitive performance in children: Study

0

Contrary to the popular belief that playing video games is linked with mental health problems, a new study has found that it may be associated with better cognitive performance in children.

The study, published in JAMA Network Open, found that those who reported playing video games for three hours per day or more performed better on cognitive skills tests involving impulse control and working memory, compared to children who had never played video games.

“This study adds to our growing understanding of the associations between playing video games and brain development,” said researcher Nora Volkow, from National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

“Numerous studies have linked video gaming to behavior and mental health problems. This study suggests that there may also be cognitive benefits associated with this popular pastime, which are worthy of further investigation,” Volkow added.

For the study, the team analyzed data obtained when children entered the ABCD Study at ages 9 and 10. The research team examined survey, cognitive, and brain imaging data from nearly 2,000 participants within the bigger study cohort. They separated these children into two groups, those who reported playing no video games and those who said playing video games for three hours per day or more. This threshold was selected as it exceeds the American Academy of Pediatrics screen time guidelines, which recommend that video gaming time be limited to one to two hours per day for older children.

For each group, the investigators evaluated the children’s performance on two tasks that reflected their ability to control impulsive behavior and to memorize information, as well as the children’s brain activity while performing the tasks.

The researchers found that the children who reported playing video games for three or more hours per day were faster and more accurate on both cognitive tasks than those who never played. They also observed that the differences in cognitive function observed between the two groups were accompanied by differences in brain activity. Functional MRI brain imaging analyses found that children who played video games for three or more hours per day showed higher brain activity in regions of the brain associated with attention and memory than those who never played.

At the same time, those children who played at least three hours of video games per day showed more brain activity in frontal brain regions that are associated with more cognitively demanding tasks and less brain activity in brain regions related to vision.

Earlier, a study reported that video games can precipitate life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias in susceptible children whose predisposition may have been previously unrecognized.

Mamata’s statements on Singur reveal that she is jittery: CPI

The CPI(M) in West Bengal is actually happy after Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee blamed the party for driving out the Tatas from Singur.

According to a top leader, such remarks only go to show that the Trinamool Congress considers the CPI(M) its greatest challenge in the panchayat elections slated to be held in a few months.

“Mamata Banerjee realizes that the CPI(M) has regained quite a bit of lost ground in the rural belts of West Bengal, particularly after exposure of the teacher recruitment and cattle smuggling scams in which top Trinamool Congress leaders are allegedly involved. The CPM, along with its allies, organized several protests across the state. These were well accepted by the people. Mamata Banerjee knows that the CPI(M) will give it a tough fight in the panchayat elections. Hence, such statements tarnish the image of the party,” the CPI(M) leader said.

Over the last few days, after the Durga Puja, Mamata Banerjee has been denying that she or the Trinamool Congress had any role in not allowing the Tata Motors small car factory to come up in Singur, Hooghly.

According to her, she had only fought for unwilling farmers who were forced to part with land for the factory. “It was the CPI(M) that was responsible for the mess. We just wanted land acquired from unwilling farmers to be returned. There were other plots available nearby that could have been used for the factory,” she has been saying.

According to another CPI(M) leader, such statements are being made by Mamata Banerjee and her party colleagues, including minister Firhad Hakim, as the masses are suffering due to the dismal economic condition in the state. Despite holding several business summits, the West Bengal government hasn’t been able to attract large investors. Many continue to blame the Trinamool Congress for its role in driving out Tata Motors from Singur which may have shaken the confidence of other investors.

The BJP in West Bengal has lost a lot of ground, thanks to internal squabbles over leadership. Even after the 2021 Assembly elections in West Bengal, in which the BJP’s performance left much to be desired, the party was considered the main threat to the Trinamool Congress. However, unlike the CPI(M), the BJP failed to take advantage of the situation even after the arrests of leaders like Partha Chatterjee and Anubrata Mandal. Rather, the rift within the state unit of the party was made public through irresponsible statements by its leaders.

T20 World Cup 2022: Sam Curran’s five-for leads England to 5-wicket win over Afghanistan

0

All-rounder Sam Curran’s sensational five-for led England to a convincing five-wicket win over Afghanistan in a Super 12 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 at Perth Stadium, here on Saturday.

Curran employed the short ball, alongside the occasional full delivery to great effect to remove Ibrahim Zadran, Usman Ghani, Azmatullah Omarzai, Rashid Khan, and Fazalhaq Farooqi and become the first cricketer from England to take a five-for in T20Is.

His historical performance helped England bowl out the Mohammed Nabi-led Afghanistan for a meager total of 112 in 19.4 overs. Ibrahim (32) and Ghani (30), who played with a degree of confidence in tricky conditions, were the top scorers for Afghanistan.

In reply, England chased down the target with five wickets and 11 deliveries to spare. Liam Livingstone top-scored for his side with an unbeaten 29-ball 21, while Jos Buttler, Davin Malan, and Alex Hales made scores of 18, 18, and 19 respectively.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, England bowlers kept the Afghanistan batters under pressure right from the beginning of the match. They restricted the Afghans to less than six runs per over in the Power-play and took the sole wicket of Rahmanullah Gurbaz courtesy of Mark Wood.

There was still some hope for Mohammad Nabi’s men as they had wickets in hand but England’s top-class fielding made it difficult for Afghanistan.

In the 7th over, Zazai slashed one off Ben Stokes towards deep cover where Livingstone flung himself to grab an excellent catch. In the 12th over, Moeen Ali ran back from backward point to complete a fine effort to send Ibrahim back to the pavilion while Adil Rashid charged from mid-on to pouch another impressive catch, with Najibullah Zadran being the batter dismissed. Buttler then dived full stretch to pluck another blinder, with Mohammad Nabi being the batter dislodged.

As far as Curran’s bowling spell is concerned, the pacer claimed the wicket of a well-set Ibrahim Zadran in the middle overs and then came back at the death to pick up four wickets and complete his five-for. He registered figures of 3.4-0-10-5 in the end.

Chasing a small target, England got off to a steady start with Alex Hales and Jos Buttler putting on an opening stand of 35 runs. But they suffered a brief scare in the middle as they went on to lose four wickets in the space of just 46 runs.

Afghanistan could also sense that they were back in the game. But Livingstone stepped up and seemed to find a bit of fluency in his batting as he drove, cut and glanced at Afghanistan’s bowlers to pick up a few boundaries, scoring an unbeaten 29 from 21 deliveries to guide England home.

For Afghanistan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid, Fareed Malik, and Nabi shared the spoils while Rashid was the most economical bowler on show, finishing with 1 for 17 from four overs.

This win also gave England a significant boost in their NRR, which stands at +0.620 right now. Afghanistan fought well with the ball but this loss has left them with an NRR of -0.620 and they will need to work really hard to improve it.

Brief scores:

Afghanistan 112 (Ibrahim Zadran 32; Sam Curran 5-10) lost to England 113/5 in 18.1 overs (Livingstone 29 not out; Rashid Khan 1-17) by five wickets

Extortion case: Jacqueline deleted evidence from phone, says ED

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has claimed that Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandez had deleted evidence from her cell phone, and also tried to leave the country.

The ED made this submission while opposing the actor’s bail plea in connection with a money laundering case pertaining to Rs 200 crore extortion matter involving multimillionaire conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, an official said on Saturday.

The IANS is in possession of ED documents that confirm that she had deleted data from her cell phone.

“She admitted deleting crucial evidence on her phone and further had told others to delete the evidence which amounts to tampering of evidence. She also tried to flee abroad,” the ED has claimed.

The ED said that during the investigation it emerged that Jacqueline enjoyed the proceeds of crime which the main accused (Sukesh Chandrashekhar and Leena Maria Paul) obtained by the route of extortion from Aditi (wife of Shivinder Singh).

Jacqueline had knowledge of the criminal antecedents of the main accused — Sukash and Leena.

“She not only used and enjoyed the proceeds of crime herself but also shared that with her family members staying abroad while knowing very well that the money and gifts showered by Chandrasekar were nothing but proceeds of crime not earned by him through any genuine source. An amount of Rs 7,12,24,767 had been identified till now as proceed of crime and the same was attached,” the ED said.

The ED said that Jacqueline never cooperated with the investigation team, and only when confronted with evidence and statements, she had made the disclosure.

Initially, Jacqueline denied that Chandrashekhar had purchased two cars for her parents but on December 12, 2021, she admitted it. She also stated that her sister had received $1,72,913 in her account.

Fernandez was granted interim bail. She has not been given regular bail. The court has extended her interim bail till the next date of hearing.

Apple Watch helps detect rare cancer in 12-yr-old girl

0

An Apple Watch has reportedly been credited with spotting a 12-year-old girl’s rare cancer before she was even aware of it, with the help of its heart rate notifications feature.

As reported by Hour Detroit, Imani Miles and her mother Jessica Kitchen now view the Apple Watch as more than just a gadget.

Imani’s mother, Jessica, noticed that her daughter’s Apple Watch started beeping constantly, alerting Imani to an abnormally high heart rate.

“That’s really weird because it’s never happened before. It just kept going off,” said the mother.

The concerned mother took her daughter to the hospital, where doctors noticed a tumor in her appendix.

It was then that they learned of a “neuroendocrine tumour” on her appendix, which according to doctors, is “rarely seen in children”, the report added.

When doctors found Imani’s tumour, it had already spread to other parts of her body, requiring her to undergo surgery to remove it.

“If the watch didn’t go off, I probably would have just waited and taken her in the next couple of days,” Kitchen was quoted as saying.

“If she didn’t have that watch, it could have been so much worse,” she added.

Imani had surgery at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in the US to remove the remaining tumor, according to the report.

Earlier this month, Apple Watch detected a 34-year-old woman’s pregnancy.

The woman on Reddit posted that the watch indicated that her average resting heart rate had significantly increased in just a few days, which made her suspect that something was off.

In July, a woman’s heart was detected with a rare tumor after she received multiple alerts that her heart was in atrial fibrillation.

None of the Aussie batters reached 30 runs.

Brief scores:

New Zealand 200/3 in 20 overs (Finn Allen 42, Devon Conway 92 not out, James Neesham 26 not out) beat Australia 111 all out in 17.1 overs (Glenn Maxwell 28, Pat Cummins 21; Tim Southee 3/6, Mitchell Santner 3/13) by 89 runs

Women’s panel serves notice to Pawan Kalyan on remarks about 3 marriages

Andhra Pradesh State Women’s Commission on Saturday issued a notice to actor-politician Pawan Kalyan for remarks reportedly made by him about his three marriages.

The Commission has taken a serious view of the Jana Sena Party (JSP) leader’s alleged remarks and asked him to withdraw the same and apologize to women.

Commission chairperson Vasireddy Padma said that by making the remarks Pawan Kalyan has given a message that a man can divorce his wife by giving her alimony. She said he should apologize to the womenfolk for making those insulting comments.

The chairperson stated in the notice that Pawan Kalyan’s remarks caused uproar in society and shocked women.

The Commission said it waited for him to realize his mistake and apologize, but he had no regret in making those remarks.

It observed in the notice that three marriages of a man are an issue that can’t be justified. “How can you say that I married three women by paying crores of rupees as alimony and challenging others to do it if they can?”

“If men go on divorcing their wives by paying alimony in crores, lakhs, and thousands as per their capacity, which woman will be secured?” Vasireddy Padma asked.

She questioned Pawan Kalyan as to whether he did not realize the impact his words as a cinema hero and president of a party will have on his fans and followers.

She also took strong exception to the actor allegedly using the word ‘stepney’ while referring to women in his speech.

Vasireddy Padma stated that the Commission received several complaints from women. She voiced concern that his statement can pose a grave danger to the security of women.

Addressing a press conference in Vijayawada on October 18, Pawan Kalyan lashed out at ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leaders for their attacks on him over his three marriages.

The JSP leader clarified that he married the second wife after giving divorce to the first and the third wife after giving a divorce to the second.

Pawan said he gave alimony to the first and second wives as per law.

He said he paid Rs 5 crore to the first wife and gave property to the second wife.

Akshay joins ‘Ram Setu’ stunt team to design chase & action scenes

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar will be seen in the Abhishek Sharma-directed, ‘Ram Setu’, which is touted to be one of its kind action-adventure film. The actor teamed up with the action masters, Anl Arasu and Parvez Shaikh to design and choreograph the action blocks of the film.

The film features the actor as an archaeologist, who is on a mission to protect Ram Setu from evil forces. Through the journey, he encounters various challenges.

According to a source close to the film: “He would be on the set and improvise the stunts for a better impact. There’s a prolonged action sequence set in Afghanistan, which has been partly choreographed by Akshay himself. Another scene that he improvised throughout the shoot was the motorboat chase sequence. With his experience, he would always sit down with Anl Arasu and Parvez Shaikh to elevate the scenes further.

“There have been instances when he performed the stunts before the shoot as a part of test and safety check.”

Producer, Vikram Malhotra, who has worked with Akshay in multiple films before insists that the Afghanistan and Boat action scenes are two of the major highlights of his Diwali 2022 release. Abhishek Sharma is grateful to be working with such a team.

He said: “For me, it was the best of both worlds where on one hand, I had two of the best action directors – Anl Arasu and Parvez Shaikh and on the other hand, I had a man synonymous with action in our country.

He added: “The task we had at hand was to create a new type of action, an action which is not your conventional fight sequences but actually using the environment, the world that is available to you to create magic. Akshay sir understood these nuances and helped elevate this with his understanding and experience of action.”

PM inaugurates Rozgar Mela, says government system has changed in eight years

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that completion of the process of selection for lakhs of vacancies in a few months and issuing appointment letters is an indication of the change that the government system has undergone in the last seven-eight years.

He made these observations while inaugurating a Rozgar Mela virtually, where appointment letters were handed over to 75,000 newly inducted appointees.

Prime Minister Modi further said that the Government had provided assistance of more than Rs 3 lakh crore to the MSME sector during the pandemic, which helped prevent the loss of crores of jobs.

He informed said that the Centre is focussed on the manufacturing and tourism sectors as they generate maximum jobs.

“Today marks the day when a new link in the form of Rozgar Mela is being anchored to the employment and self-employment campaigns in the country that are going on for the last eight years”, Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that keeping in mind the 75 years of independence, the Central government is giving appointment letters to 75,000 youngsters under a program.

“We decided that a tradition of giving appointment letters in one go should be started so that a collective temperament of completing projects in a time-bound way develops in departments”, he said explaining the rationale of the Rozgar Mela.

“India is today the fifth largest economy in the world. In the last eight years, we have jumped to the fifth position from the tenth position. It’s true that many big economies of the world are struggling with inflation, unemployment… side effects of the biggest crisis in 100 years cannot just go away in 100 days,” Modi said in his virtual address.

He added that despite the challenges, “India, with full force, new initiatives, and some risks, has been trying to save itself from the global crisis. We’ve been able to save ourselves till now with your cooperation. We have, in the last eight years, minimizing the issues which created obstacles in our way”.

The Prime Minister recalled the days when applying for government jobs was a cumbersome process and favoritism and corruption were rampant in selections. He said that the steps during the initial years of his government, like self-attestation and abolition of interviews in Group C and Group D posts of the Central Government, have helped the youth.

The appointees will join the government at various levels i.e. Group – A, Group – B (Gazetted), Group – B (Non-Gazetted), and Group – C. The posts on which appointments are being made include Central Armed Force Personnel, Sub Inspector, Constable, LDC, Steno, PA, Income Tax Inspectors, MTS, among others,” a statement issued by the PMO said.

Evans Hankey, who replaced chief designer Jony Ive at Apple, is moving on

0

Evans Hankey, vice president of industrial design at Apple who had replaced the iconic designer Jony Ive at the company, is moving on.

Hankey’s counterpart in software, Alan Dye, is staying with Apple, according to media reports.

“Apple’s design team brings together expert creatives from around the world and across many disciplines to imagine products that are undeniably Apple,” a company spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“The senior design team has strong leaders with decades of experience,” the spokesperson added.

Hankey will remain in the post for the next six months during the transition period.

“Evans plans to stay on as we work through the transition,” said the spokesperson.

Apple is yet to decide who will be its new design head.

After Ive left, Hankey was made the head of hardware design while Alan Dye was the design lead for software and user interfaces.

Hankey has been with the tech giant’s design team for several years.

Apple in July finally ended its decades-long relationship with its chief designer Ive, the person behind the look and feel of the iPhone or the MacBook that you use today.

Apple COO Jeff Williams continues to manage the design teams, though the product marketing team has “assumed a central role in product choices”.

Ive has been the key design figure behind products like the original iMac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Apple’s new “spaceship campus”.
