‘Today, I finish one year as a wildlifer,’ says Sadaa

Actress Sadaa, who has taken to wildlife photography in a big way, on Saturday announced that she has completed one year in wildlife.

Taking to Instagram to make the announcement, the actress, who has acted in several blockbusters including director Shankar’s ‘Anniyan’, wrote: “Today, I finish one year as a wildlife and it’s the kind of anniversary I’d wish to celebrate for the rest of my life!”

“Last year, on this day, I embarked on a journey, I never thought would turn out to be my forever love. Had I not been shooting for a movie in Panna, I doubt if I’d be here today writing this post.”

“I strongly believe it was meant to happen. I was meant to experience this beautiful unexplored world out there that’d enrich me beyond anything else!”

“What started as a casual safari in the woods of Panna, soon turned into an undying passion for jungles and wildlife.”

“Fifteen odd trips to nine National Parks/Reserves & 52 big cats, all in one year! From depending on others to capture moments in the wild for me to have my own gear now; from learning the basics of photography to now learning the art of processing images, I have come a long long way and I’m way more than happy with this incredible journey!”

“How I wish I was in one of the forests of India celebrating this day but I’m gonna make up for it by exploring some new places in the next two months. Can’t wait to be back where my soul finds peace, in the wild…”

50% of Indian mobile users wish to upgrade to new device in 5G era

0

About 50 percent of smartphone users in India plan to buy a new device within the first year as the 5G roll-out begins, a report has said.

India has more than 500 million smartphone users to date.

The price band of Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000 is the most preferred price band for future smartphone purchases in the country, according to Counterpoint Research.

India’s smartphone market ASP (average selling price) is expected to rise because consumers tend to prefer a higher price band for every subsequent purchase.

Samsung, Apple, and OnePlus is at the top as the survey respondents preferred smartphone brands for the next purchase, the report noted.

In terms of features, 5G capability is the third most important feature considered when planning the next purchase. The same factor is ranked tenth in terms of importance for current smartphone purchases.

“When purchasing a new smartphone, more than one-third of the users plan to retain their current device as an alternative/secondary phone. Also, with more exchange offers available, more than one-fourth of the respondents plan to trade in their current smartphone when purchasing the next one,” said research analyst Arushi Chawla.

Samsung users have the strongest brand loyalty with 51 percent of the users who used Samsung as their previous device also using Samsung currently.

Apple, despite having a smaller share in previous and current smartphone purchases, is the second most preferred brand (20 percent) for future purchases, said the report.

“In addition, 5G capability becomes more important as we move up the ladder for budget preference for future smartphones. 5G is one of the main factors taken into consideration by all major smartphone brands. But 5G is the most important factor for respondents preferring Apple as their next smartphone purchase,” said Chawla.

T20 World Cup: Managed to get some issues right, standing in good position right now, says Rohit Sharma

0

Since last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, India has played 35 matches, the most by any side participating in the ongoing tournament in Australia. Managing the workload of the players across formats led them to field 29 players in the T20Is — the most by any team in 2022, which narrowed down to 15 for the T20 World Cup.

On the way, they won every bilateral series — home and away, barring the drawn 2-2 result against South Africa at home in June and not making it to the final of the Asia Cup in the UAE in September.

Now, with their T20 World Cup Super 12 opener against Pakistan set to happen in Melbourne on Sunday, captain Rohit Sharma felt the side managed to get some issues right from 2021 and that they are standing in a good position right now in their quest to add just their second World Cup trophy in the shortest format of the game.

“We obviously (have) had a good run. We wanted to change a lot of things, and we addressed what went wrong for us in the last World Cup and kept everything in mind whatever happened in the last World Cup, all leading up to the last World Cup. We wanted to address all the situations, all the problems, and all the issues.

“But we managed to get some of those right for sure. So pretty much standing in a good position right now, having played 35 games. Understood what we need to do as a team, what we need to do as a bowling group, batting group, and fielding group, as well. Coming into this World Cup, very well prepared, as well. We wanted to address a lot of issues, and I think we managed to do that,” said Rohit in the pre-match press conference.

Since the time Rohit took over as captain and Rahul Dravid as head coach, India tried players at various positions apart from having different skippers at the helm in many matches. They also got the team to embrace an ultra-attacking approach with the bat, especially in going hard with the bat in the first six overs.

Rohit added that giving players freedom and security to do good in testing situations in a match has been one of the biggest focuses in the Indian set-up since their early exit from the 2021 T20 World Cup.

“The most important thing was to give players freedom, giving them the security to do well in challenging situations. We focused on how to give players security without worrying about results. These small things matter a lot, in this last year, are not been focused on results, we wanted to focus on small things. We were thinking about how we can play fearlessly. We were talking about it in our dressing room.”

Often in the past, India has gone into big tournaments almost after the end of a bilateral series or after an edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). For instance, the side landed straightaway on the T20 World Cup bandwagon days after the second half of IPL 2021 ended in the UAE.

In preparing for the 2022 T20 World Cup, India departed earlier for Australia, setting up a long camp in Perth, where they played two practice matches against Western Australia XI and then had a warm-up match against Australia at Brisbane before rain washed out another such match against New Zealand.

“That’s something we’ve been talking about for a while like when you go on big tours, you need to prepare well, especially when you travel outside India. You need to have time in hand to prepare the way you want to prepare because it takes time.

“A lot of the guys are not used to playing in foreign conditions, be it Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand, and all those countries. It’s always nice to have time in hand, and this was a conscious effort from the team management, BCCI, that come to the big tournament, we want to have time in hand to prepare ourselves, and the talk of having time in hand started right after the last World Cup.

“We said, we know where the World Cup is happening, and we made a very conscious decision of going to Australia a little earlier than expected because we were supposed to play the (ODI) series against South Africa which unfortunately we all had to miss to prepare for this big event.”

“That is something that was happening in the background right after the World Cup. We know how key preparation is. A lot of the guys who are part of this team have not been to Australia, so that was also one of the reasons we wanted to come here early,” elaborated Rohit.

From the main squad, Harshal Patel and Deepak Hooda had toured Australia but as members of the India U19 side in 2009 and 2013 respectively, while Suryakumar Yadav, Axar Patel, and Arshdeep Singh haven’t had the experience of playing competitive cricket in the country. Rohit explained glowingly about the gains in the preparation from the 15-day period spent in Perth and Brisbane.

“We had a great time in Perth. We were there for nine days, and then we came to Brisbane. We prepared and played a couple of practice games in Perth just to get used to the conditions, and pitches. You can’t travel all around Australia and play on all pitches, but we could get whatever we could get.

“I thought Perth was the right time for us to start. Obviously, the time difference is not too much, also, so you can easily get acclimatized to the time zone, and that was also one of the reasons.”

“The way we went about the entire Perth leg was good for us. We could specifically focus on certain things when it comes to batting, and the bowlers could work on certain things for all this unique time, and we were lucky enough to get those time in hand to prepare ourselves and come here in Melbourne.”

With the final set of preparation done and dusted, India is now all set for its biggest challenge — sustaining the good run after a transformation in approach and achieving an elusive world title in Australia.

“Now it’s time to execute those ideas, those plans that we’ve been discussing what are the issues and everything. We’ve tried to manage — see, no team will be 100 percent right, but as a team, we want to do as many things as possible right. I think coming here into the World Cup, we feel confident that we can achieve what we want to achieve as a group,” concluded Rohit.

Google introduces Clear Calling feature on Pixel 7 series

0

Tech giant Google has introduced a new feature called “Clear Calling” in its latest beta update for Pixel 7 series users to improve call clarity.

The call quality enhancer is available for those who download the Android 13 QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release) beta 3 software update.

According to the Android Authority, during Google’s Pixel launch event earlier this month, the company also unveiled a few new software features coming to the handsets.

As part of those features, Clear Calling was developed, which “automatically filters out background noise and enhances the voice on the other end of the line with machine learning, making it easier to hear the person on the other end of the line, even when they are walking on a windy street or dining in a noisy restaurant,” said Google in a blog post.

Users can find this feature in their sound settings if they install the Android 13 QPR1 beta. Simply scroll down to settings, tap on sound & vibration, and then find Clear Calling. Users can toggle Clear Calling on or off once they enter the page.

Users will need to sign up for Google’s beta program before they can get started. There may be bugs and errors in this update due to it being an unstable version, the report added.

Pro League to provide direct berths to World Cup, Olympic Games from 2024-25 season

0

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has made major changes in the FIH Pro League format, making it available two direct qualifying berths each for the subsequent World Cups and Olympic Games to winners in both men’s and women’s sections for the seasons starting from 2023-24 season.

“Winner of the Men’s and Women’s Pro League season 5 and season 6 will qualify for the World Cup in 2026 and the winners of seasons 7 and 8 will get direct entry into the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles,” the CEO of International Hockey Federation (FIH), Thierry Weil told the media in an online interaction on Friday.

From the fourth edition to be conducted in the 2022-23 season, the FIH will introduce relegation and promotion with the last-placed team at the end of the season in both men’s and women’s competitions dropping down to the Nations Cup while winners of the Nations Cup getting promoted to the respective conducting Pro League tournaments, the FIH CEO said.

The fourth season of the FIH Men’s Pro League, to be conducted as mini-tournaments 3-4 teams to reduce the amount of traveling for players starts on October 28 at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar with hosts India taking on New Zealand, who return to the Pro League after staying away for a season because of Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Spain is the third team for this cluster of matches and the hosts will play both opponents twice between October 28 and November 4, with The Black Sticks playing Spain on October 29; India taking on Spain on October 30 and will end this cluster of matches with a clash against New Zealand on November 4.

The Indian men’s team will play its matches at Bhubaneswar and Rourkela, which will act as test events for the newly-constructed stadium here before the World Cup in January 2023.

The FIH had started the Pro League on a home-and-away basis as an alternative to the tournaments involving more than two teams as it felt that there were not many takers for matches not involving the home teams. However, over the last couple of seasons, it has diluted the home and away format to reduce the amount of travel for players which was not only hitting the federations financially but impacting the players physically.

These changes were necessary to reduce the travel involved and to complete the FIH Pro League in such a way that it does not impact the various tournaments and leagues, the FIH CEO said.

Thus, the fourth edition of the women’s FIH Pro League will start on November 5 with Belgium taking on Germany in Mendoza, Argentina.

Weil said providing direct qualification to Pro League winners will not hit the importance of the Continental competitions as the direct berths to regional champions will stay. “The direct berth to the winners of the Continental events will stay as will the direct berth to the World Cup and Olympic Games host country. Two berths in each section will go to Pro League winners and the rest will be awarded through a tournament,” said Theirry Weil.

World Junior Mixed Team Badminton: India beat Germany, to play Hong Kong for 13th place

0

The Indian team beat Germany 4-1 in its 13-16th place playoff match at the World Junior Mixed Team Badminton Championships 2022, here on Friday.

India will play Hong Kong, who beat the Czech Republic 3-1 in the other bracket, in a bid to finish in the 13th position in the tournament.

India started the tie against Germany with a win as the mixed doubles pair of Samarveer and Radhika Sharma beat Jarne Schlevoigt and Julia Meyer 21-18, 21-16 in the opener.

Bharat Raghav then doubled India’s lead with a come-from-behind 14-21, 21-17, 21-8 win over Sanjeevi Padmanabhan Vasudevan in men’s singles.

The men’s doubles pair of Jonathan Dresp and Simon Krax, however, pulled a match back for Germany as they got the better of Arsh Mohammad and Abhinav Thakur 21-14, 24-22.

In the crucial fourth match, Unnati Hooda produced a clutch 21-8, 21-6 win over the German women’s singles representative Selin Hubsch.

With India 3-1 up, the women’s doubles pair of Shreya Balaji and Srinidhi Narayanan wrapped up the affair, beating Julia Meyer and Cara Siebrecht by a 21-13, 21-13 margin.

Even if the Indian badminton team wins Saturday’s match against Hong Kong, it cannot better its finishing position, 12th, from the last edition in 2019.

India’s best showing at the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships was a fourth-place finish in the 2008 edition.

T20 World Cup: Bowlers, Ervine, Raza star as Zimbabwe beat Scotland by five wickets, clinch final Super 12 spot

0

Captain Craig Ervine played a captain’s knock of 58 off 54 balls while Sikandar Raza smacked a cameo of 40 as Zimbabwe beat Scotland by five wickets in the first round of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at Bellerive Oval to end up as winners of Group B and clinch the final Super 12 spot.

After Tendai Chatara and Richard Ngarava picked two wickets each in a clinical bowling performance to restrict Scotland to a paltry total of 132/6 in 20 overs, Zimbabwe was in trouble at 42/3 in eight overs.

But Ervine, who hit his sixth T20I fifty, and Raza shared a 64-run stand off 43 balls, followed by Milton Shumba and Ryan Burl applying finishing touches for Zimbabwe to chase down the total with nine balls to spare, continuing their good run in the tournament after featuring the last time in T20 World Cup in 2016.

As Group B toppers, Zimbabwe will now enter Group 2 of Super 12 alongside India, Pakistan, South Africa, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands for the very first time. Ireland will now move towards Group 1 alongside defending champions Australia, Afghanistan, England, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka as the second-best side from Group B.

Chasing 133, Zimbabwe suffered huge blows upfront as Regis Chakabva and Wesley Madhevere were sent packing within the first two overs by Brad Wheal and Josh Davey. Sean Williams fell cheaply as well, holing out to deep square leg off Michael Leask.

Ervine, who had played some delightful drives and switch hits till then, and Raza took their time to calm down the proceedings. Raza then went for the attack by piercing the gap between cover and long-off off Safyaan Sharif in the 11th over.

Raza was more attacking Scotland spinners, using his bottom hand and powerful hands to take a brace of sixes and a four off them while Ervine played the anchor role and got a well-deserved fifty as well.

Raza fell after a crucial cameo of 40 runs, giving a faint edge behind on a pull off Davey and two overs later, Ervine mistimed a lofted drive to running mid-off. But by then, the match was in Zimbabwe’s favor and Burl finished off the chase with a four-hammered over leaping mid-on to seal their Super 12 spot.

Earlier, Scotland was unable to justify their captain Richie Berrington’s decision to bat first as none of the batters looked fluent, including their top-scorer George Munsey, who made 54 off 51 balls with seven fours, as Zimbabwe’s bowlers combined well to keep them in check throughout the innings.

Moreover, Zimbabwe bowlers resorted to straight lines and with spinners keeping things tight, didn’t concede a single six in the innings, the first time an instance like this was recorded in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Scotland lost their openers Michael Jones and Matthew Cross in the first 4.1 overs. Munsey, Berrington, and Calum MacLeod tried their best to get the Scotland innings back on track, but they never got the momentum and acceleration needed to advance toward a big total.

Munsey and Berrington put on a 40-run stand between themselves followed by a 34-run partnership between him and MacLeod. Munsey held the innings together but was not as effective as Scotland would have thought. After being at 33 runs off his first 22 balls, Munsey scored only 21 runs off his next 29 balls.

The partnerships for Scotland didn’t come at a fast scoring rate as Zimbabwe didn’t let them go away. Also, they feel the need of using their other bowling options like Burl and Luke Jongwe apart from the fielding being great as well to march to Super 12.

Brief Scores: Scotland 132/6 in 20 overs (George Munsey 54, Calum MacLeod 25; Tendai Chatara 2/14, Richard Ngarava 2/28) lost to Zimbabwe 133/5 in 18.3 overs (Craig Ervine 58, Sikandar Raza 40; Josh Davey 2/16, Brad Wheal 1/26) by five wickets

Political chaos in UK

0

During the last four months, the British public has witnessed a lot, with the change of three Prime Ministers, four Chancellors, and a new monarch, it definitely is taking a toll on the political scene of the country.

Liz Truss resigned as the Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party on Thursday after reading out a statement outside 10, Downing Street. She said she was doing so because she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected as the Tory leader, just 46 days before.

This brings the curtains down on her 44 day-tenure, the shortest ever for any British Prime Minister. The final act was preceded by a period of immature and unviable decisions, taking the British public for granted and backstabbing and infighting amongst Conservative Party members.

The story more or less unfolded on the same lines as it happened during the last days of the previous Prime Minister Boris Johnson. In BoJo’s case, the crisis was precipitated by the resignation of his Chancellor Rishi Sunak and in Truss’s case, it snowballed after the resignation of her Home Secretary Suella Braverman.

The stormy days

Truss, who assumed office on September 6, assured the electorate that her government will “ride out the storm” together and she will do everything to bring the living costs down by imposing a cap on energy prices for the next two years.

But her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng who presented a mini-budget on September 23, completely rattled the markets. His suggestions included abolishing the 45 percent rate on earnings over 150,000 pounds, and government plans to borrow around 2 billion pounds annually.

The not-so-mini fiscal plan that was intended to boost UK growth, spooked investors and sent the pound to a record low against the dollar. Sterling’s fall produced higher import prices and concerns about skyrocketing borrowing costs.

It also forced the Bank of England to take emergency measures, committing to buy 65 billion pounds in bonds to calm gilt markets after a sell-off which is due to end on October 14.

Truss’s mini-budget was seen as overly aggressive, with her tax proposals and spending initiatives viewed as unsustainable, moreover, these cuts were unfunded and affected the investor’s and market’s confidence in the UK economy.

To undo the damage Truss in an unprofessional manner fired her Chancellor and she has been reported as saying that she was forced to do so to save her own skin.

She further pulled another rabbit out her the hat on October 14 when she unexpectedly sacked her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng who was summoned to return early from the annual IMF summit in Washington.

She replaced Kwarteng with Jeremy Hunt, who made a complete U-turn and abolished majorly all proposals of his predecessor. Thus with this, her humiliation was complete. Her public standing and political savvy took a severe hit.

Another blow was served when her Home Secretary Suella Braverman resigned on October 19, after backpedaling furiously on her statement calling Indians the biggest visa overstayers in the UK.

This coupled with other related issues also cast doubts on the finalization of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India before Diwali, a promise much touted by both BoJo and Truss.

But the failure of her fleeting leadership was really written by financial markets. Investors immediately protested her disastrous “growth plan” when it was revealed in September.

Now, who?

The contest to find the next Tory leader and PM has been kickstarted; the most important man to play a major role in this is Graham Brady, chairman of the Conservative Party’s 1922 Committee, who says that a shorter contest may give a result by next Friday. Current Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has refused to run but Rishi Sunak, Boris Johnson, and Penny Mordaunt are all seen as contenders.

Though Rishi seems to be a current favorite of the bookies, his policies seem to more in tune with the market forces and no sympathy could be expected from him to overhaul the crumbling social care, health, and public housing sectors in Britain. Other names being floated are Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, International Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch, Foreign Secretary James Cleverly, and Braverman.

Meanwhile, there have been unconfirmed reports that veteran Tory, Michael Gove, one of Truss’s fiercest critics, and Tom Tugendhat, who have both runs in previous contests – have ruled out standing this time.

On the other hand, the opposition Labour Party smelling blood has called for a general election. In a statement on Twitter on October 20, UK Labour Party’s leader Keir Starmer said the British people deserve “so much better” than this “revolving door of chaos, each one of these crises was made in Downing Street but paid for by the British public. Each one has left our country weaker and worse off, the Tories cannot respond to their latest shambles by yet again simply clicking their fingers and shuffling the people at the top without the consent of the British people”.

To a certain extent, Starmer seems right. But if we peep a little bit more deeply into history, then this chaos in the UK unfolded with the onset of the Brexit saga. The public was fed falsified accounts of how the country would benefit from the economic boom and clutches of the EU’s red tape if the UK left the EU.

We saw an unwelcome ear of Theresa May’s rule, followed by Boris Johnson’s quirky style of leadership and then a nervous and uninspiring leadership by Truss. These all point to a lack of courage or clear principled politicking by the Conservatives.

The Conservatives seem to have taken the electorate for granted and in fact, they have elected two Prime Ministers without going back to the public and both have been shown the door unceremoniously. And now they are ready to thrust a third unelected Prime Minister on the British public and God forbid if that person also ends up being a non-performer then the Conservatives would have written their own epitaph.

Pak Election Commission disqualifies Imran in Toshakhana case

0

In a major legal victory for the ruling coalition government in Islamabad, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), in a consensus verdict on Friday, disqualified former Prime Minister Imran Khan and ruled that the PTI chairman is no more a member of the National Assembly.

The ECP stated that Khan submitted a false affidavit and was found involved in corrupt practices, Geo News reported.

Rejecting the ruling, PTI leader Fawad Chauhdry said that it is an attack on 220 million Pakistanis.

The verdict was announced amid tight security in the capital city’s Red Zone where at least 1,100 police officials were deployed under the command of a senior superintendent of police to control the law and order situation in the area.

The officer was assisted by five superintendents of police, and six deputy superintendents of police.

Geo News reported that the law enforcement agency was given teargas shells in case the party workers launch a protest.

According to a notice, the ECP had ordered all the relevant parties or their counsels to appear before the commission at its secretariat.

The poll body had reserved its verdict in the Toshakhana case on September 19 after arguments were completed from both sides. A five-member bench of the ECP, headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, heard the case.

Toshakhana is a word of Persian origin that literally translates into “treasure house”.

A department under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division, it stores precious gifts given to the head of state, MPs, bureaucrats, and officials by heads of other governments, states, and foreign dignitaries.

According to Toshakhana rules, gifts and other such material received by persons to whom these rules apply shall be reported to the Cabinet Division.

During the last hearing of the case, which took place on September 19, Khan’s counsel Ali Zafar admitted that his client had sold at least four presents he had received during 2018-19.

“The gifts were sold for Rs58 million and their receipts were enclosed with the income tax returns filed by my client,” the lawyer apprised the ECP.

He maintained that Khan has provided the gifts’ details up to 2021 in the written reply submitted to the election body, Geo News reported.

“The ECP conducts scrutiny if the body has doubts on any details but in this case, the election body did not raise any objection,” argued the PTI lawyer.

In 2019-20, Khan received gifts worth 1.7 million PKR, the lawyer told the ECP.

An ECP member asked about the source of income for procuring the gifts from the state treasury.

At this, the lawyer said that he will not give the details to the Commission.

Countdown for ISRO’s historic GSLV MkIII rocket mission with 36 OneWeb satellites begins on Saturday

0

The countdown for the historic launch of the Indian rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII (GSLV MkIII) will begin at 12.07 a.m. on Saturday, said a senior official of the Indian space agency.

The rocket will be carrying 36 small broadband communication satellites of Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) to sling them in low earth orbit on October 23.

OneWeb is a joint venture between India Bharti Global and the UK government.

The satellite company plans to have a constellation of 650 satellites in low earth orbit (LEO) to offer communication services.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had earlier said the rocket will lift off with 36 satellites at 12.07 a.m. on October 23.

“The countdown for the rocket’s liftoff will begin 24 hours before its flight,” an ISRO official told IANS.

During the countdown, the rocket and satellite systems will be checked. The fuel for the rocket will also be filled.

For ISRO, the mission is historic because, for the first time in its history, a GSLV rocket will be used for a commercial launch.

The GSLV MkIII is a three-stage rocket with the first stage fired by solid fuel, the second by liquid fuel, and the third is the cryogenic engine.

The ISRO’s heavy-lift rocket has a carrying capacity of 10 tons to the LEO and four-ton to the Geo Transfer Orbit (GTO).

“The total launch mass of OneWeb satellites will be six tonnes,” an official told IANS.

The 36 satellites will be on a dispenser system made by the Swiss-based Beyond Gravity, formerly RUAG Space.

Beyond Gravity had earlier provided the satellite dispensers for launching 428 OneWeb satellites to Arianespace.

“The dispenser with 36 satellites was supplied by the vendor. It was used in all their earlier launches,” an ISRO official told the media.

For Beyond Gravity, this is the first time their dispenser is fitted in an Indian rocket.

Starting in 1999, ISRO has put into orbit 345 foreign satellites to date.

The successful launch of 36 OneWeb satellites will take the tally to 381.

Another set of 36 satellites from OneWeb is planned to be put into orbit in January 2023.

“One additional launch will take place this year and three more are targeted for early next year to complete the constellation,” OneWeb had said.

This launch brings OneWeb’s constellation to 462 satellites, more than 70 percent of the satellites required for OneWeb to reach global coverage.

This milestone will activate a new phase of OneWeb’s launch program, in pursuit of its mission to bridge the digital divide around the world. The company remains on track to activate global coverage in 2023 – with coverage solutions already live in regions north of 50 degrees latitude, OneWeb said.

Bharti Enterprises, a major investor and shareholder in OneWeb, this year announced a distribution partnership with Hughes Communications India Private Ltd.

The NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) the commercial arm of ISRO has signed two contracts with Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) for launching the latter’s broadband communication satellites in low earth orbit.

Another set of 36 satellites from OneWeb is planned to be put into orbit in January 2023.

Earlier, the OneWeb satellites were launched by Russian rockets. Following Russia’s military action against Ukraine, OneWeb decided to look at other rockets.

In a way, it is Russia’s loss and India’s gain.

Space sector experts had earlier told the media that the US and Europe’s economic sanctions against Russia for its military action in Ukraine may throw up economic opportunities for the Indian space sector, instead of burdening it with economic costs.

They also said that to cash in on the opportunities, India should accelerate its satellite launch capabilities, and announce productivity-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for the aerospace sector.

“All those countries feeling the pinch due to the absence of Russian rockets for satellite launches may look at alternatives. While the bulk of the satellite launch contracts will be taken by the US and Europe, there will be others who may look at other options. India’s neutrality has created a new market segment,” Chaitanya Giri, Founder, of DAWON Advisory & Intelligence, told Media.

The board of OneWeb — jointly owned by India’s Bharti Global and the UK government — had voted to suspend satellite launches from the Baikonur rocket port in Russia.

Meanwhile, the Sunday rocket mission has several firsts for the Indian space sector. They are: (a) The first commercial launch of GSLV MkIII (b) the First time an Indian rocket will be ferrying a payload of about six tonnes (c) First-time OneWeb is using an Indian rocket to put its satellites into orbit (d) the First commercial launch of GSLV MkIII contracted by NSIL, the commercial arm of the Indian space sector and (e) First-time GSLV MkIII or its variants is being used for launching satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Instagram has rolled out new features to protect users from abuse, along with updates to Hidden Words.

Now if you block someone, you will have the option to block additional accounts they may have to make it more difficult for them to connect with you again, the company said in a blog post.

Based on the findings of the first tests for this new change, the company expects that four million fewer accounts will need to be blocked each week since these accounts will now be blocked automatically.

Since it launched last year, more than one in five people with a minimum of 10,000 followers have turned on the Hidden Words feature.

Hidden Word is an effective tool for automatically removing damaging content from message requests and comments.

According to the company, 40 percent fewer comments on average might be offensive.

The company is starting to test automatically turning on Hidden Words for Creator accounts.

Every user will be able to turn the settings on or off at any time and make a customized list with additional words, phrases, and emojis they might want to hide.

Now, a new notification will encourage the users to pause and think about how they want to respond before replying to a comment that might be offensive.

The application also reminds people to be respectful in direct chats when sending a message request to a creator, the company said.

0

The International Hockey Federation on Thursday announced that the Chilean women’s national team will be replacing Canada in the inaugural edition of the FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup Spain 2022, starting from December 10-17.

Following Canada’s decision to withdraw from the upcoming FIH Hockey Women’s Nations Cup, the rapidly rising Chilean team that has been making waves in international hockey over the past year has been chosen to replace them. Chile’s qualification for the event is based on its world ranking, as they are the next highest-ranked team outside of the current participants.

The Chilean team has gone from strength to strength in 2022 and gets a massive opportunity to continue building their momentum in the Nations Cup, where a victory can lead to promotion into the FIH Hockey Pro League.

Chile’s first big performance of the year came in the 2022 Women’s Pan American Cup, where they finished runners-up to Argentina, and booked a place in the FIH Hockey Women’s World Cup Spain & Netherlands 2022.

The Chilean team was the flavor of the Women’s World Cup, with excellent performances throughout, but what captivated the crowd, even more, was the passion and joy that was on display both on and off the field. After all, who can forget the scenes as Chile played their first game at the World Cup, and earned their first win against the reigning silver medalists Wales?

Just this past week, the Chilean women’s team added yet another feather to their cap by defeating the reigning World Cup silver medalists and current Pro League champions, Argentina, in the finals of the XII South American Games Asuncion 2022, and winning the gold medal.

Chile captain, Camila Caram, shared her excitement at the prospect of her team playing in the Nations Cup and said, “We are very happy as a team to be able to participate in this tournament. We are very sorry that Canada is absent, but it gives us a tremendous opportunity to show our level of play. We hope to be able to live up to the game and these tremendous rivals that we will face that will participate in the tournament.”

Chile will now take Canada’s place in Pool B alongside India, Japan, and South Africa while Pool A consists of hosts Spain, Korea, Italy, and Ireland.

The FIH Women’s Nations Cup 2022 will run from December 10-17.
