CLOSE-IN: India have the fire-power to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022

0

The Indian cricket team has embarked on its journey for the T20 World Cup 2022 to be played in Australia. This is wonderful news as the team will get enough time to get acclimatized to the conditions Down Under.

India plays their first match on October 23 at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground against arch-rivals Pakistan. This is the most crucial match for the Indian side as a defeat in it could put them in deep waters to qualify. The main rivals, thereafter, are South Africa, Bangladesh, and possibly the West Indies, if they qualify from their group games.

India should have gotten over their disappointing performance in the Asia Cup 2022, having beaten Australia and South Africa in a three-match T20I series at home. The only blemish for India was that they lost their last match against South Africa solely due to experimenting with their bench strength players — the reason being that India had already wrapped up the series and felt that they could do with a change.

One felt that India needed to keep their winning momentum intact, as a loss may not seem important but it has a lingering impact on a team’s confidence inadvertently.

The Indian team may rue the fact that their lethal frontline bowler in Jasprit Bumrah, unfortunately, due to injury, will not be a part of their side. However, India does have a battery of pacers to choose from in their fold.

The most difficult adaptation required for any side to play in Australia is to get used to their wickets and conditions. The additional bounce off the wicket is one area that has been difficult to handle for most batsmen. Fortunately, the Indian team will have a fortnight to get acclimatized through a few practice matches and net sessions.

The T20 game is one in which batters have to start playing their shots from the very first delivery. This is where the challenge lies for the Indian batters as the shots that one is used to playing in India on a particular delivery are hugely different from what one needs to play in Australia. Similarly for the bowlers, the length to bowl varies substantially from what one is used to back home.

India, on their last trip to Australia in 2020/21, did fairly well in both the T20I and Test series, and one hopes that they are able to recollect and adjust their game accordingly. They now have the time to do so.

India’s batting strength is far ahead of any of its rivals. A team that boasts Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Suryakumar Yadav as the top-four batters and the likes of Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, and the canny Dinesh Karthik to follow. This is a dream line-up for any side.

India also boast of having some very good spin options. They have a leg-spinner in Yuzvendra Chahal, the accurate left-arm spin of Axar Patel, and the world’s top off-spinner in Ravichandran Ashwin. The larger Australian grounds will suit them far better, and both Melbourne and Sydney wickets have shown that one can derive a turn on them as well. Spin will play a very important part in the tournament and India fortunately is well-equipped in that department.

The only area of worry is India’s pace bowling options. Although Bhuvneshwar Kumar is an experienced bowler, the likes of Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel have still to earn their spurs. Mohammed Shami as a replacement for Bumrah, if fit, would be an ideal option.

The Indian players, having had the advantage of playing the IPL, are now very familiar with the T20 concept and the situations that one confronts while playing it.

India started well in the Asia Cup by beating Pakistan but, thereafter, they faltered against them as well as Sri Lanka. The losses were not because of their cricketing skills but more of the way they approached the matches mentally.

The problem with the Indian team is the pressure that they put themselves under because of the hype that follows them. The millions of well-wishers and fans may look like a wonderful following but they can become a heavy burden to carry on one’s shoulders as well.

Team India needs to approach the T20 World Cup without the worry of winning the Cup. They need to play in a carefree manner without thinking about the outcome. India’s victory in the inaugural tournament in the T20 World Cup in 2007 was achieved by a young side that one least expected to win because they played without a care.

India is the current No. 1-ranked T20 side in the world. This they have achieved through their consistent performances this year. The unfortunate fallout from being at the top is that everyone expects India to win. This has been the tale of woe since 2014 in all the multi-national ICC tournaments.

One feels that the Indian team looks far more comfortable and determined approaching this World Cup. The expectations of their followers are also much less, having been disappointed in the past. The time is just right for India to shine. A Diwali victory on the eve of the festival against Pakistan would be just the right way for India to start their campaign.

India has the firepower to win, it is only the mental belief to do so that they seem to falter when put under pressure.

The Indian Women’s cricket team seems to be on the verge of winning the Asia Cup 2022. Their victory could be just the catalyst and booster for the men to emulate.

Twitter brings its ‘Edit Tweet’ feature to US

0

After rolling out it’s much anticipated ‘Edit Tweet’ button in select countries, microblogging site Twitter has started rolling out the same feature for Blue subscribers in the US.

Earlier this week, the platform rolled out the feature for Blue subscribers in Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. However, it did not mention the feature’s availability for Indian audiences.

According to 9to5Mac, the company said that the “test went well” and it is now “gradually rolling out Edit Tweet to all US Twitter Blue subscribers”.

The new feature to edit tweets comes with some limitations. For example, users cannot edit tweets 30 minutes after they have been published.

Earlier, the microblogging platform mentioned that a version history will be available on every edited Tweet, so users know what changed.

Ahead of the launch, Twitter had also showcased the feature on its own platform by tweaking one of its tweets that showed ‘Last Edited’ at the bottom of the post.

Twitter edited a tweet and once clicked on “Last edited”, people can see the original tweet and the previous edit history.

Twitter Blue subscriptions are paid on a monthly basis and priced regionally based on the current US price of $4.99.

Google updates Assistant with new features for Pixel 7 series

0

Tech giant Google has announced that it is improving Assistant’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, including new ways to interact more naturally with Assistant across Pixel 7 and the Google Pixel Watch.

The company said that with Assistant voice typing, users can easily talk to Google to type, edit and send messages on average 2.5x faster than typing on the keyboard, and now in more languages — Spanish, Italian, and French.

When users are writing a message, Assistant voice typing can now suggest emojis relevant to their messages. It lets them search for the emoji to insert with their voice even without knowing its exact name.

“At Made by Google, we shared some ways Google is creating a more delightful calling and texting experience on Android-powered devices and how Assistant’s speech models are helping to make it even easier to communicate,” Minni Shahi, Director, Product Management, Assistant.

Google said the new Call Screen helps users avoid unwanted calls and it has handled over 600 million calls for users last year.

On Pixel 7, users can now say “Silence” to dismiss incoming calls when they are not ready to pick up.

And soon, the Recorder app on Pixel 7 will include Speaker labels to differentiate and transcribe each speaker’s words separately, allowing you to capture meeting and interview notes with ease, the company said.

Former Gujarat Cong MLA Ribadiya joins BJP

Former Congress MLA from Visavadar constituency of Gujarat’s Junagadh district Harshad Ribadiya on Thursday joined the BJP in presence of party general secretary Pradipsinh Vaghela.

Ribadiya refuted allegations that he joined the BJP as he was offered Rs 40 crores.

Gujarat Congress working president Ambarish Der has alleged that in one conversation with Ribadiya, the latter had told him that the BJP has offered him Rs 40 crore.

Ribadiya, while refuting the allegations made by Der, claimed that during the 2017 Rajya Sabha elections, when party stalwart Ahmed Patel was contesting the election, two Congress leaders had approached him and offered him Rs 40 crore in lieu of resigning as MLA. He alleged that the two leaders wanted that the party’s MLAs’ strength comes down, and Patel to lose the election.

The former Congress MLA said that the Congress party “lacks policy, vision, and leadership which is why workers are quitting the party”.

Along with Ribadiya, several of his supporters also joined the saffron party on the day.

0

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravi Bishnoi have been handed debuts in ODI cricket as India won the toss and elected to bowl first against South Africa in the series opener at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium here on Thursday.

The match has been reduced to 40 overs per side, with each bowler to bowl a maximum of eight overs. The first power-play will be of the first eight overs, followed by 24 overs of the second power-play and the last eight overs of the third power-play.

We got six batters and bowlers playing. In the bowlers, we have two spinners and three pacers.”

South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma said he wanted to bowl first too, observing that the pitch might be difficult to bat on early on. “We have a job to do with the bat and we need to adapt accordingly after the first few overs. You gotta be able to adapt to different formats quickly and we still want to keep those T20 skills in check.”

With ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League points for grabs in the series, all three games hold huge importance for South Africa, which is in 11th place in the standings. “Every game for us is a big opportunity. Earlier in the afternoon, the toss was to take place at 2:45 pm and play was scheduled to start at 3 pm with 45-overs-per-side before rain put a stop to that plan. In the morning, because of heavy rains that lashed the capital city of Uttar Pradesh overnight, the start time of the match was pushed by 30 minutes, on the basis of an early inspection done by the umpires.

The toss for the Day/Night match which was scheduled to be held at 1 pm will now be held at 1:30 pm. The play will begin at 2:00 pm, the BCCI said in a tweet. As per the weather sites, heavy rain has been predicted for the whole day in Lucknow with a 100% chance of precipitation.

US believes elements within Ukraine’s government authorised Moscow assassination

The US intelligence community believes the car bombing that killed Darya Dugina, the daughter of prominent Russian political figure Alexander Dugin, was authorized by elements within the Ukrainian government, local media reported.

The US was not aware of the plan beforehand, according to the sources, and it is still unclear who exactly the US believes signed off on the assassination. It is also not clear whether the US intelligence community believes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was aware of the plot or authorized it, CNN reported.

But the intelligence finding, first reported by The New York Times, would seem to corroborate elements of the Russian authorities’ findings that the car bombing was “pre-planned”.

Russia had accused Ukrainian nationals of being responsible for the attack, which Ukraine had strongly denied in the aftermath of the explosion.

Asked to comment, a Ukrainian defense intelligence official said following the publication of the latest reports that their agency had no new information on Dugina’s death. Shortly after her death, the same official told CNN that Ukraine had nothing to do with it.

US intelligence officials believe that Dugina was driving her father’s car on the night she was killed, and that her father was the actual target of the operation, one of the sources said.

Dugin is a Russian ultranationalist and philosopher who has been a fierce proponent of Russia’s war in Ukraine. A friend of Dugina also told the Russian state-owned news outlet TASS shortly after the explosion that the car she was driving was her father’s.

Just days after Dugina’s death, Russian authorities accused a Ukrainian woman of remotely detonating explosives planted in Dugina’s Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, and then driving through the Pskov region and into Estonia to escape, CNN reported.

ISRO getting ready its GSLV rocket for OneWeb satellite launch

0

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is getting ready its rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mk III (GSLV MkIII) for launching 36 satellites of OneWeb in the third or fourth week of this month.

According to ISRO, the two solid fuel-fired booster motors have been strapped onto the liquid fuel-powered second stage at the second launch pad at the rocket port in Sriharikota.

The GSLV MkIII is a three-stage rocket with the first stage fired by solid fuel, the second by liquid fuel, and the third is the cryogenic engine.

According to ISRO, the 36 satellites have undergone health checks successfully and have been integrated with the dispenser unit.

After this, the cryogenic stage will be stacked on the second stage and the integration of heat shield or payload fairing with the 36 satellites will happen, said ISRO.

The NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) the commercial arm of ISRO has signed two contracts with Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) for launching the latter’s broadband communication satellites in low earth orbit.

“The total launch mass will be six tonnes,” the official told IANS.

The proposed mission has several firsts for the Indian space sector. They are: (a) The first commercial launch of GSLV MkIII (b) the First time an Indian rocket will be ferrying a payload of about six tonnes (c) First-time OneWeb is using an Indian rocket to put its satellites into orbit (d) the First commercial launch of GSLV MkIII contracted by NSIL, the commercial arm of the Indian space sector and (e) First-time GSLV MkIII or its variants is being used for launching satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Another set of 36 satellites from OneWeb is planned to be put into orbit in January 2023.

“One additional launch will take place this year and three more are targeted for early next year to complete the constellation,” OneWeb had said.

OneWeb is a joint venture between India Bharti Global and the UK government.

The satellite company plans to have a constellation of 650 satellites in low earth orbit to offer communication services.

The GSLV MkIII with a lift-off mass of 640 tons is a three-stage rocket powered by solid, liquid, and cryogenic engines.

The rocket was designed to carry four-tonne satellites into Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO) and about 10 tons to LEO.

With this launch, OneWeb will have more than 70 percent of its planned Gen 1 Low Earth orbit (LEO) constellation in orbit as it progresses to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity services around the world.

Bharti Enterprises, a major investor and shareholder in OneWeb, this year announced a distribution partnership with Hughes Communications India Private Ltd.

Dhanush, Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth call off divorce after nine months’ separation

Tamil star Dhanush and Aishwaryaa Rajinikanth – the eldest daughter of megastar Rajinikanth, have put their divorce on hold and are trying to make things work around their marriage. Dhanush and Aishwaryaa got married in 2004. They have two sons together, Yatra Raja and Linga Raja.

Several media reports state that nine months after announcing the separation, the two have decided to reconcile their marriage although an official statement from Dhanush and Aishwaryaa is awaited.

Back in January 2022, Dhanush wrote: “18 years of togetherness as friends, couple, as parents and well-wishers to each other. The journey has been of growth, understanding, adjusting, and adapting. Today we stand at a place where our paths separate… Aishwaryaa and I have decided to part ways as a couple and take time to understand us as individuals for the better. Please do Respect our decision and give us the needed privacy to deal with this. Om Namashivaaya! Spread love, D.”

51% of daily Bitcoin volume on crypto exchanges fake: Report

0

More than 51 percent of the total Bitcoin trading volume on various crypto exchanges this year is fake amid volatile global economic conditions, a new report has claimed.

Bitcoin is the blue chip of cryptocurrency and represents 40 percent of the total crypto assets outstanding in the new and volatile crypto markets. Its market cap is currently at 382.25 billion.

According to data provided by niche news publisher BanklessTimes.com, the majority of this fake Bitcoin volume is due to washing trading.

Wash trading is illegal, where an asset is bought and sold simultaneously on the same platform to create false liquidity. This is often done by bots or spoofing orders.

“It’s difficult to talk about cryptocurrency without talking about Bitcoin. Yet, there is a concern that a large part of the daily traded volume of Bitcoin is fake. This puts into question the legitimacy of exchanges and the reliability of data,” said Jonathan Merry, CEO of BanklessTimes.

Another factor contributing to the fake volume is stablecoins such as Tether (USDT).

Tether pairs very well with Bitcoin and is often used to buy and sell Bitcoin on exchanges.

“This results in many volumes being generated without any actual Bitcoin changing hands,” said the report.

According to the report, faking trading volume can be a way for exchanges to attract new customers.

By appearing to be more popular than they actually are, exchanges can trick investors into thinking there is more activity and liquidity on their platform.

Another reason people might engage in wash trading is to prop up the price of a particular asset, according to the report.

By buying and selling the asset simultaneously, they can create the illusion of demand and drive up the price. This can be done for personal gain or artificially inflate an asset’s price before selling it.

“Investors should be wary of exchanges that report false figures. You must do your research and only use exchanges you trust,” the report suggested.
