Arunachal Governor Mishra takes additional charge of Meghalaya

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Dr) B.D. Mishra (retd) on Tuesday took oath as the Governor of Meghalaya in addition to his current responsibility.

Meghalaya High Court’s seniormost judge Justice Hamarsan Singh Thangkhiew administered the oath of office to Mishra at a function at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan, Shillong.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, ministers, and senior civil and security officials were present at the function.

Sangma, after the swearing-in-ceremony, tweeted: “Congratulations and best wishes to Brig. Mishra Ji as he takes charge as the Governor of Meghalaya. Look forward to his counsel and support as we further Meghalaya’s development. We welcome him to our beautiful State!”

The Meghalaya Governor’s post fell vacant after Satya Pal Malik’s tenure ended on Monday.

Malik, who was critical of the now-repealed three central farm laws, had served as the Governor of Bihar from September 2017 and he was transferred to Jammu and Kashmir in August 2018 and Goa in October 2019 before being moved to Meghalaya in August 2020.

TRS leader distributes live chicken, liquor to celebrate launch of national party

A live chicken and a liquor bottle for everyone! This is what a TRS leader distributed among some locals in Warangal on Tuesday ahead of the launch of the national party by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Standing under huge cut-outs of KCR, as the Chief Minister is popularly known, and his son K.T. Rama Rao, a local leader of Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) Rajanala Srihari was seen personally distributing chicken and liquor bottles to people in Warangal.

Several people, mostly daily-wage workers, queued up to receive the gifts from Srihari, who is celebrating the proposed launch of Bharatiya Rashtra Samithi (BRS) by KCR.

Srihari said he wants to see KCR as the Prime Minister and KTR as the Chief Minister.

After the video of the distribution of gifts went viral on social media, political rivals took a dig at TRS while many netizens also decried the act by the TRS leader.

Terming BRS as ‘Bottles Rashtra Samithi’, Telangana Congress said the election symbol of BRS should not be ‘car’ but ‘quarter’.

“Dear India, see this, this is what Desh ka Neta will also do at a national scale if he comes… My goodness,” tweeted Vijay Gopal, an anti-corruption activist.

The TRS is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting of its legislators and other top leaders on Wednesday, where KCR is likely to announce the decision to convert TRS into BRS.

Meanwhile, several leaders of TRS in different parts of the state offered prayers for the success of the proposed national party.

‘Bollywood’s Hanuman looks like a Musalman’: ‘Boycott Adipurush’ trends on social media

After “Laal Singh Chaddha” and “Brahmastra”, another Bollywood movie has run into rough weather, with “Boycott Adipurush” trending on social media, days after its teaser got released.

The excitement for Om Raut’s film “Adipurush” — starring Saif Ali Khan, Prabhas, and Kriti Sanon — was quite high ever since it was announced. However, just a few hours after the release of the teaser, the netizens began criticizing the film for Saif’s “Islamic” look, unconvincing VFX, and also the costumes of the other cast targeted.

Comparisons are also being made with Lord Hanuman from Ramanand Sagar’s serial “Ramayan” to “Adipurush”. Actor Devdatta Gajanan Nage is playing the role of Hanuman in the movie.

The netizens have claimed that Hanuman’s look in the film also has similarities with the Islamic attire.

A user tweeted, “Bollywood’s Hanuman Looks Like A Musalman #BoycottAdipurush.” Another one wrote, “After 35 years, gutter Bollywood converted the ‘gracefulness’ of arrogant Ravana and Hanuman Ji into Mughals.”

“Hanuman in Ramayan. Musalman in #Adipurush, Note: No Hindu keeps a beard without a Moustache. This film should be banned… They are defaming our Ramayan. They are showing Ravana and Hanuman with beards as Mughals with no Tika on their foreheads,” added one.

Earlier, on Tuesday, Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra reportedly expressed his anguish over the portrayal of the gods in the film.

Mishra said that the Hanuman was shown wearing leather clothes while the description of his appearance is clearly given in the Hanuman Chalisa.

“There are objectionable scenes in the teaser. Such scenes hurt religious sentiments. I am writing to maker Om Raut to remove these scenes. If he does not agree, there will be legal action,” the minister was quoted as saying.

“Adipurush” is a retelling of the Ramayana. Prabhas’s character is termed as Raghav, which is another name for Lord Ram. Saif plays Ravana while Janaki (Sita) is played by Kriti Sanon.

The makers of Adipurush have spent a fortune on the visual effects. The film has reportedly been made on a budget of over Rs 400 crore, most of which has been spent on the VFX but, it seems like the output is far from what the audience was expecting.

Explainer: Will your current smartphone give you 5G experience?

0

As telcos begin to roll out 5G services with select users in metro cities, common users on the street are flooded with queries about whether their smartphones will be able to run 5G data packs or not in the near future.

According to industry experts, one thing is certain: You need a 5G-enabled handset in your pocket to enjoy high-speed internet to stream movies or play games.

“At the SIM level, there may not be a need to change as of now as telecom service providers will upgrade the SIM from the back-end to enable it for 5G services. A 4G SIM can surely work in 5G-powered phones,” Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak told IANS.

However, a 5G-enabled smartphone is a must to avail of high-speed internet and other services.

Reliance Jio said on Tuesday that invited ‘Jio Welcome Offer’ users in four cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Varanasi — will be automatically upgraded to the Jio True 5G service “without needing to change their existing Jio SIM or 5G handset”.

Jio said it is also working with all handset brands to enable their 5G handsets to work seamlessly with Jio True 5G services so that customers have the most comprehensive range of 5G devices to choose from.

It also means that more than 500 million smartphone users in India will have to purchase 5G-ready handsets going forward.

India will soon have close to 100 million 5G-enabled smartphone users.

In any case, millions of these users will have to wait till late 2023 or early 2024 to enjoy 5G on their devices but they do need 5G-capable devices.

According to Airtel, a 4G SIM can work in 5G-powered phones. However, you also need to keep in mind that you wouldn’t be able to leverage the 5G capabilities to the fullest.

“To enjoy the 5G network to its maximum potential, you would be required to have a 5G SIM with a 5G phone. Despite all that, your 4G SIM will surely provide you with better connectivity and transmission when used with 5G phones,” according to the company.

You must have a device that is compatible with 5G networks. Today, when 5G services are about to be implemented, most phone companies have already launched 5G-enabled smartphones in the market with modems and built-in hardware to support 5G technology.

Will a 5G SIM work on a 4G-enabled smartphone?

The answer is yes. However, there is a catch to it.

“While a 5G SIM card can be used in 4G mobile, it would still be providing you with 4G networks as one of the major requirements to use the 5G technology is having a 5G-powered device,” according to the Airtel FAQ.

If your phone is not 5G-enabled, it will not be able to access 5G networks and hence, you wouldn’t be able to enjoy the blazing fast speed and connectivity of the 5G network.

Big Tech firms to empower disabled users with sound recognition

0

The University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign (UIUC) has announced a new Speech Accessibility Project with big tech companies like Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Meta.

The aim of the project is to improve voice recognition for users with disabilities and different speech patterns including users with Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other diseases that affect speech.

“Speech interfaces should be available to everybody, and that includes people with disabilities,” said Mark Hasegawa-Johnson, a UIUC professor.

The Speech Accessibility Project will gather speech samples from people with a variety of speech patterns to include communities of people with disabilities like Parkinson’s.

To contribute voice samples and help create a private unidentified dataset, the UIUC will hire paid volunteers. At first, the group will focus on American English.

The initiative has received support commitments from Team Gleason (ALS) and the Davis Phinney Foundation (Parkinson’s).

“Part of that commitment includes ensuring people with Parkinson’s have access to the tools, technologies, and resources needed to live their best lives,” said Polly Dawkins, the Davis Phinney Foundation’s Executive Director.

“Parkinson’s affects motor symptoms, making typing difficult, so speech recognition is a critical tool for communication and expression,” she added.

3rd T20I: India win toss, opt to bowl against South Africa

0

India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bowl first against South Africa in the third and final T20I of the three-match series at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, here on Tuesday.

India, who is leading the series made three changes in their side as Shreyas Iyer, Umesh Yadav and Md Siraj came in place of KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, and Arshdeep Singh for this match.

“We’re going to field first. It’s a very high-scoring ground, I feel the pitch won’t change a lot so it’s nice to know what target is in front of us. Three changes for us, Kohli and KL are out, and Arshdeep misses out for some issues with his back. It is precautionary, nothing serious. We’ve got Shreyas Iyer, Umesh Yadav, and Siraj in,” said Rohit at the toss.

“We want to keep challenging ourselves, keep improving and keep batting the same way,” he added.

On the other hand, Temba Bavuma-led South Africa made just one change as Dwayne Pretorius replaced Anrich Nortje for this game.

“Wasn’t too sure on what to do today, not too fussed about losing the toss. As a leader, these are the kind of games you want to contribute to. Hopefully, I can repay the team today. The series is out of our reach but this is our last opportunity to achieve a few objectives ahead of the World Cup,” said Bavuma.

“One change today – Dwayne Pretorius comes in for Nortje, just to give an extra option with a change of pace. We need to win today, it is a chance for some of our batters to find some form, and also as a group to try and click together,” he added.

Chiranjeevi pledges support to brother Pawan Kalyan

Tollywood ‘megastar’ K. Chiranjeevi on Tuesday praised his younger brother, actor-politician Pawan Kalyan as a leader who is known for his sense of commitment, saying that his support will definitely be with him.

Chiranjeevi also stated that Andhra Pradesh needs a leader like Pawan Kalyan and hoped that people will give him an opportunity in the future.

The former Union minister and Congress leader, who has been staying away from politics for the last eight years, made politically significant comments at a media event about his movie ‘Godfather’ released on Wednesday.

“Since childhood, I have known him for his honesty and commitment. This did not get polluted anywhere. We need such a leader,” said Chiranjeevi about his younger brother Pawan Kalyan.

“Which side he will be, where he will be, it will all be decided by people in the future. He definitely has my support,” added Chiranjeevi.

The ‘megastar’ also recalled that he did not like being on one side of politics with his brother on the other. “I withdrew myself and remained silent with the hope that in the future he will emerge (as a leader). I hope people will give him an opportunity. Such a day should come,” he added.

Chiranjeevi was apparently referring to the 2014 elections when he was leading Congress party’s campaign in Andhra Pradesh while Pawan Kalyan was canvassing for the TDP-BJP combine.

Pawan Kalyan, who founded Jana Sena Party (JSP) before the 2014 polls, did not contest but supported the TDP-BJP combine and addressed election rallies in the company of Narendra Modi and Chandrababu Naidu.

In 2019, JSP contested the elections in alliance with BSP and the Left parties. However, Pawan Kalyan’s party could not win a single seat in the 175-member Assembly and he himself was defeated in both the seats he contested.

Popular in Tollywood as a ‘Power Star’, Pawan revived his alliance with BJP after the 2014 polls and is currently working to forge an alliance against the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP).

Chiranjeevi had last week stated that he wants to be away from politics but politics is not going away from him.

He also organized a pre-release event of ‘Godfather’ in Anantapur, a move which was seen as a political signal. Pawan Kalyan had already expressed his desire to contest the next election from Anantapur.

Chiranjeevi entered politics in 2008 by floating Praja Rajyam Party (PRP). However, the party had to bite the dust in 2009 polls as the Congress under Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy retained power in then undivided Andhra Pradesh.

The actor later merged his party with the Congress and in return, the latter made him a Rajya Sabha member and a Union minister.

After Congress was wiped out from Andhra Pradesh in 2014 due to public anger over the state’s division, Chiranjeevi distanced himself from active politics and started focusing on films.

A remake of the Malayalam film ‘Lucifer’, ‘Godfather’ is a political thriller written and directed by Mohan Raja. Bollywood star Salman Khan has also made an appearance in movies made in Hindi and Telugu.

Replying to a query, Chiranjeevi said the dialogues in the movie were not aimed at targeting the present-day politicians. He said that the dialogues are based on the original story and that they had no intention of targeting anyone.

Legends League Cricket: Mohammad Kaif recreates memory of Pakistan match, netizens go crazy

0

While the ongoing Legends League Cricket continues to spellbound fans by rolling back the clock with the cricketing greats in action, former India batsman Mohammad kaif stunned the fans by showcasing glimpses of his old self, attacking the opposition bowling attack in style.

During the match between Manipal Tigers and India Capitals, Kaif walked down the pitch to hammer the bowlers. This quickly reminded fans of his batting during India’s tour of Pakistan in 2004 when kaif irked Shoaib Akhter with a similar batting approach.

Kaif was brilliant in that ODI series which India won by 3-2. His series-leveling unbeaten knock of 71 in the fourth match is still fresh in fans’ hearts.

Kaif also revisited the memories when he later took to Twitter and posted a video of both the events.

“Walking is good for health!! #never stop walking. Allahabad wale cricket aise hi khelte hain. #chora ganga kinare wala @llct20,” he wrote in the caption.

The video took social media by storm in no time as fans went gaga over the nostalgic post.

“I remember this,” said one of the users while another added: “Wo bhi kya din the sir.. @MohammadKaif, childhood memory.. taza kr di … (those were the days, it refreshed our childhood memories) I still remember that reaction from @shoaib100mph Sir.”

Conducted in India for the first time, the Legends League Cricket has been witnessing the participation of many cricketing legends including Virender Sehwag, T-20 boss Chris Gayle, Shane Watson, Yusuf Pathan, Brett Lee, and Muttiah Muralitharan among others. Kaif scored 222 runs from five matches in the league-third highest of the season.

Over 80% of Indians suffer from micronutrient deficiencies: Report

0

More than 80 percent of the Indian population suffers from micronutrient deficiencies, contributing to compromised immunity, a report said on Tuesday.

According to a consensus by the Consumer Health Division of Bayer, more than two billion people suffer from MiND (micronutrient deficiencies) globally, with nearly half living in India.

“The doctor’s consensus paper has identified a growing problem in India, with a majority of us at the risk of MiND,” Sandeep Verma, Country Head, Consumer Health Division of Bayer in India, said in a statement.

“The grave inadequacy of multiple micronutrients coupled with wrong eating habits and lifestyle-related factors has contributed to the growing micronutrient deficiency in India,” Verma added.

The consensus, based on a national advisory board comprising 21 Indian healthcare practitioners, found that fatigue, insomnia, lack of energy, malaise, and loss of appetite are the first signs of hidden hunger, contributing to compromised immunity.

Pregnant women are consuming less than 50 percent of the required essential micronutrients, the report said.

The report mentioned that MiND is highly prevalent in more than 62 percent of urban and semi-urban adults due to wrong eating habits, inadequate diet, and prevalence of anemia leading to the inadequacy of multiple micronutrients.

Further, the consensus also reported how these micronutrient deficiencies can directly link to compromised immunity and viral respiratory infections.

Scientific evidence suggests that zinc, vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin D are a few of the most important micronutrients to help boost immunity, thus influencing the risk and clinical course of viral respiratory infections.

Big B says people should inculcate discipline akin to that of the Indian army

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who is currently awaiting the release of his film ‘Goodbye’, has said that nothing can be better to draw inspiration from than the Indian army when it comes to discipline.

He also mentioned that if we adopt the kind of discipline that the army practices, then life would be much better and perfect. He further welcomed Lieutenant Colonel Girish Tandon on ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’, saying that he felt proud introducing army personnel on the show.

Introducing Girish on the quiz-based reality show, Big B said: “He is part of the most respected, Indian army, and I request everyone to give him a grand welcome with loud applause.”

Praising the Army, the host added: “The Indian army is the best example of discipline and if we make it part of our day-to-day life, we can do good work.”

Later, the contestant requested the host that it would be better if the portrayal of the Indian army officers can be changed in movies and they can be shown close to common people unlike the ones holding guns or batons in their hands.

Apart from this, the officer also shared stories from the border and spoke about his journey of serving in the Indian army for 20 years.

Sharing his experience being on the show, the contestant said: “The time spent on the hot seat with Big B will forever be cherished in my heart as a special memory.”

“Bachchan Ji is one of the humblest persons I have ever come across and the way he acknowledged and showed interest in the lives of army personnel touched my heart. The episode is going to be a very insightful one as we will be seen discussing army lives, their discipline, and what happens in their personal lives,” he concluded.

‘KBC 14’ airs on Sony Entertainment Television.

Social media use linked to developing depression

0

Young adults, who use more social media, are significantly more likely to develop depression within six months, regardless of personality type, finds a new study.

The findings, published in the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports, showed that people with high agreeableness were 49 percent less likely to become depressed than those with low agreeableness.

“Previous research has linked the development of depression with numerous factors,” said the authors, including Chunhua Cao, an assistant professor in the College of Education at the University of Alabama.

“However, the literature has been lacking in studies that focus on how various personality characteristics may interact with social media use and depression. This new study addressed these important research questions, finding strong and linear associations of depression across all personality traits,” they added.

The team also found that those with high neuroticism were twice as likely to develop depression than those with low neuroticism when using more than 300 minutes of social media per day.

For the study, the team involved a sample of more than 1,000 US adults between the ages of 18 to 30.

Depression was measured using the Patient Health Questionnaire. Social media was measured by asking participants how much daily time was spent using popular social media platforms.

Meanwhile, personality was measured using the Big Five Inventory, which assessed openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism.

The authors suggest that problematic social comparison can enhance negative feelings about oneself and others, which could explain how the risk of depression increases with increased social media use.

Engaging primarily in negative content can also enhance these feelings. And lastly, engaging in more social media reduces opportunities for in-person interactions and activities outside the home.
