Google to show Play Store reviews based on your device

0

With an aim to make it more user-friendly, Google has reportedly introduced a new feature that will show reviews on the Play Store based on the type of device a person is using.

The update promised to occur in “early 2022” in August 2021, now has arrived as Google prepares to introduce its own tablet and wearable, reports The Verge.

In the reviews section of the Play Store, there is now a notice to let you know that ratings are “verified, and that you are being shown feedback from people using the same type of device as you, the report said.

This feature is becoming increasingly important as Android apps spread to even more form factors; someone using Google’s upcoming Pixel Tablet will experience an app very differently than someone running it on a Chromebook.

“Early next year we will further update ratings to reflect the device type users are browsing Play on, whether it’s: tablets and foldable, Chrome OS, Wear, or Auto,” the company had said in a blogpost last year.

“This will give users a better impression of the experience that they can expect for the device they’re using,” it added.

The tech giant had mentioned that ratings help people decide which apps to download and they are taken into consideration for featuring and placement on Play Store.

Hrithik, Saif-starrer ‘Vikram Vedha’ to get 100-country release

Actors Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan’s upcoming movie ‘Vikram Vedha’ is releasing worldwide in over 100 countries, making it one of the widest openings for a Bollywood film.

Besides India, the film is released in territories where Bollywood films normally release day and date, including North America, the UK, the Middle East, and Australia and New Zealand, on September 30, reports Variety.

‘Vikram Vedha’ is opening across 22 countries in Europe and 27 countries in Africa and Latin America, including Japan, Russia, Panama, and Peru, all non-traditional territories for Bollywood.

The film is a remake of the 2017 Tamil-language hit ‘Vikram Vedha’, directed by writer-directors Pushkar and Gayatri and starring R. Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi.

Pushkar and Gayatri have also helmed the Hindi-language Bollywood adaptation.

The film, a neo-noir action thriller based on the Indian folktale “Vikram aur Betaal”, tells the story of a tough police officer Vikram (Khan) who sets out to track down and kill an equally tough gangster Vedha (Roshan). What unfolds is a cat-and-mouse chase, where Vedha, a master storyteller, helps Vikram peel back layers through a series of stories, leading to moral ambiguities.

The film is produced by T-Series and Reliance Entertainment in association with Friday Filmworks, Jio Studios, and YNOT Studios.

Producers include Bhushan Kumar, S. Sashikanth, and Bhushan Kumar. Reliance Entertainment has collaborated with Home Screen Entertainment for the international distribution of the film.

Dhruv Sinha, head of overseas businesses at Reliance Entertainment, said: “With the star power of lead talent of ‘Vikram Vedha’, it has garnered tremendous love and appreciation from the audience and trade alike. Reliance Entertainment Overseas and Home Screen Entertainment teams have ensured the film reaches the widest audience across the globe.”

WhatsApp working to let users create polls in group chat

0

Meta-owned messaging platform WhatsApp is likely working on a new update that will allow users to create polls in chat.

With this feature, which is under development, group participants will be able to share polls with other members of the group. It will be possible to add up to 12 options but this value may change before the release of the feature, reports WABetaInfo.

This feature is under development so it is not ready to be released to beta testers.

As per the report, an entry point for the feature will be available within the usual chat action sheet where you can find all other media sharing options and it opens the section that we spotted during the development of WhatsApp beta for Android 2.22.10.11.

A recent report said that WhatsApp is likely working on a feature that will add a new camera shortcut for iPhone users on their app.

A screenshot showed that the camera shortcut is placed within the navigation bar and it will show up for those users that can already create a community in the future.

It looks exactly like the one implemented on WhatsApp beta for Android (but since there was a bug, it has temporarily been removed in another update), the report had said.

24 women selected to be part of Singapore Grand Prix race officials

0

The FIA Women in Motorsport Commission and the FIA Volunteers and Officials Commissions have joined forces to create the first-ever Women Officials’ Exchange program.

This new initiative aims to promote and encourage the participation of female motorsports officials around the world. It is also an opportunity to introduce women to all the essential roles carried out by the volunteers at the highest level of the sport.

Out of 300 applications, 24 were selected, representing 6 regions and 24 nationalities. They will attend the Singapore Grand Prix with at least one year’s experience officiating in any role in their home country.

The program will give them their first experience both abroad and at a world championship event.

After undergoing a safety course, the participants will be allocated to a trackside position for the weekend. They will also circulate into pitlane, paddock, scrutineers, or starter positions so that they can get the maximum experience of a world-class event and can understand the process and procedures relevant to F1. Throughout the duration of their mission, they will be mentored by a local female official who will assist them in their roles.

Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President, said, “The new Women Officials’ Exchange Program illustrates FIA’s commitment to actively encourage the participation of women in motorsport, on and off track. In partnership with our members, it promotes women from all regions of the world to the essential role of officials in Formula 1. I plan to double motorsport and the participation of women is vital to achieving that goal.

Deborah Mayer, FIA Women in Motorsport Commission President, said, “I am pleased with the successful launch of our Women Officials’ Exchange Program, with many candidates from FIA Clubs around the world. They have in common the passion, dedication, and strong will to contribute positively to motorsport. The role of volunteers and officials is vital to motorsport. I am delighted that our program can shed light on the involvement of women and encourage new vocations.”

Janette Tan, Asia-Pacific Representative of the FIA WIM Commission and member of the FIA VOC said, “I am very excited to see this program taking place at the Singapore Grand Prix. I cannot be prouder of our 250 female volunteers and officials there and I am certain the 24 ladies will have a great experience. The aim of the program is to give them all the knowledge and know-how to officiate at a world-class event before becoming ambassadors for women officials in their home country.”

Teacher recruitment scam: Partha, Arpita’s judicial custody extended by 14 days

A special court of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday extended former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and his close associate Arpita Mukherjee’s judicial custody by 14 more days for their alleged involvement in the multi-crore teacher recruitment scam in West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC).

The matter will be heard next on September 28.

Although the hearing on Wednesday was concluded by 5.30 pm, the judge of the special court reserved the judgment. Finally, at around 8 pm, he gave the order directing additional 14 days of judicial custody for the accused.

Earlier in the day, during the course of the hearing, Partha Chatterjee, who attended the hearing virtually, broke into tears and pleaded for bail under any condition.

“Sir, please have mercy on me. Let me leave in peace. Please understand that I am a victim of a conspiracy,” he told the judge of the court, sobbing profusely.

However, all his appeals did not have any impact on the judge as is evident from the verdict on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a team of ED officials on Wednesday went to the BCM International School at Pingla in the West Midnapore district, which is named after Partha Chatterjee’s deceased wife, Babli Chatterjee.

Partha Chatterjee’s son-in-law, Kalyanmoy Bhattacharya, who is currently in the US, is the chairman of the school, and the latter’s maternal uncle, Krishna Chandra Adhikari, is a director of the school.

ED sleuths suspect that a portion of the proceeds of the WBSSC recruitment irregularities was invested behind this school. A couple of companies with Kalyanmoy Bhattacharya and Krishna Chandra Adhikari as directors are also under the scanner of the central agency sleuths.

TT federation marred by chaos, needs revamp: HC-appointed CoA

0

Observing the “sorry state of affairs” in the running of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) and the need to revamp it, the Delhi High Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) on Wednesday observed that there is total mismanagement in TTFI’s functioning with no record of any decision or meeting to take major decisions.

In its 91-page report submitted before the high court, the CoA said there “is a critical need to re-examine the entire bylaws and its constitution in view of not only the sports code but also for fair and transparent execution of functions as they are being managed in an unprofessional manner”.

The CoA, which was categorically clear in observing that the sport’s governance in the country long has been plagued by nepotism, fiefdom, lack of accountability, and financial irregularities, recommended that “there is also a requirement of various effective steps, which are required to be taken by the TTFI in the procedure of election, the auditors, the appointment of ombudsman and for grievance redressal”.

The high court, hearing a petition filed by ace women’s paddler Manika Batra, had in February directed the appointment of an administrator to run the TTFI, saying its faith was shaken in view of the sports body’s “sorry state of affairs”.

Observing that the TTFI office-bearers have turned a blind eye to the issues of mismanagement, the report poiinted out, “Unfortunately, they appear to have indulged in such practices. The executive committee members are not having any expertise in international competitions or table tennis or skills to administer in a professional manner.

“If permitted by the court, the CoA needs to examine the matter by taking inputs from all the stakeholders and examining the working of other federations in India and abroad to achieve the ultimate goal of the sport flourishing from grassroots to the international level.”

The CoA, headed by retired Delhi High Court Chief Justice Gita Mittal, recommended examining the necessity of prescribing essential qualifications of the office-bearers of sports associations to ensure the right talent and expertise is available in the organization.

“The sport needs more cleansing, particularly the TTFI. The CoA undertakes to complete unfinished tasks to the best of its ability in terms of the orders of the court. The time has come to implement all the steps which have been noticed and also to take effective steps to remove all action of certain individuals who are controlling, directly or indirectly, the TTFI.”

Favoring the implementation of long-term measures keeping in view the upcoming international events, especially the Olympic Games in 2024 and 2028, the CoA observed that the players have worked assiduously and the selected coaches have shown an abounding commitment to the sport.

Asking the TTFI to set its house in order urgently to remain relevant and not merely be reduced to a courier service with its role being confined to just sending entries for various national and international events, CoA member and Chandigarh-based senior advocate Chetan Mittal told IANS that they noted serious concerns as it is controlled by some people who are promoting their own interests with lack of transparency and accountability.

“The functioning is being done behind closed doors and without taking into account the interest and grievances of persons affected by its decisions, especially the players,” he said.

The CoA favors the TTFI to engage with former and contemporary players as well as experienced coaches.

“Further, the selection of coaches and players has to be done in a transparent manner to bring credibility and excellence to table tennis. There is an urgent need for the establishment of a center of excellence at national and zonal levels.”

Without mincing words, the CoA was categorically clear in saying that the TTFI in the future has to be run by dedicated professionals who have knowledge of the game without any personal interests.

Also, it favored an urgent need for the appointment of a professional CEO and competent support staff to run its day-to-day affairs.

Justice Rekha Palli, who was dealing with the petition of harassment of table tennis player Manika Batra, had on February 11 observed that TTFI “safeguarded the interests of its officials” and that “instead of promoting players, TTFI is dictating terms”.

In the petition, the paddler had claimed that the TTFI was carrying out its selection processes in a non-transparent manner and targeting certain individuals such as herself.

Apple’s M3, A17 chips likely to use TSMC’s 2nd-gen 3nm process

0

Tech giant Apple’s upcoming M3 chip for Macs and A17 chip for iPhone 15 Pro models will be manufactured based on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TMSC) enhanced 3nm process known as “N3E” next year, media reports say.

N3E will offer improved performance and power efficiency compared to TSMC’s first-generation 3nm process known as N3, citing Nikkei Asia, MacRumors reported on Tuesday.

In the meantime, the report claimed that Apple plans to use TSMC’s first-generation 3nm process for some of its upcoming iPad chips.

As per the report, it is unclear which iPad models the report is referring to, as rumors suggest that Apple will update the iPad Pro next month with the M2 chip, which is manufactured based on TSMC’s second-generation 5nm process.

A new entry-level iPad with an older A14 chip is also expected later this year, the report said.

The report claims that 2023 could mark the second year in a row in which only the Pro models of the new iPhone lineup feature Apple’s latest chip.

Last week, the tech giant unveiled iPhone 14 Pro models with an A16 chip based on TSMC’s 4nm process, while the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus models are equipped with the previous-generation A15 chip.

Complaint against Sharmila for making inappropriate remarks about T’gana CM, MLAs

Telangana Legislative Assembly Speaker has referred to the Privileges Committee a complaint by the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) against YSR Telangana Party (YSRTP) president Y.S. Sharmila for making inappropriate comments about Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, ministers, and the legislators.

Chief Whip D. Vinay Bhaskar along with ministers Niranjan Reddy and Srinivas Goud and some MLAs met the Speaker and submitted the complaint. They said her remarks against the members amounted to a breach of privileges and sought action against her.

Niranjan Reddy informed that a complaint was already filed against Sharmila to the Director General of Police (DGP).

In a series of tweets, Sharmila also sought action against Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his son and cabinet minister K.T. Rama Rao. MandhaMandhana scores half-ton as India women thrash England to level T20I series 1-1na scores half-ton as India women thrash England to level T20I series 1-1

0

Following their nine-wicket defeat against England women in the opening T20 International, India hit back with an equally impressive comeback win as vice-captain Smriti Mandhana smashed an unbeaten half-century to help the visitors level the series with an eight-wicket victory at the Country Ground in Derby late on Tuesday.

The 53-ball 79 from Mandhana was enough for India to chase down a competitive 142/6 from England for the loss of just two wickets and with 20 balls to spare.

The deciding third T20I will be played at Bristol on Thursday, following which the focus will shift to the One-day International series beginning at Hove on September 18.

On a day when Freya Kemp becomes the youngest woman to make a T20I half-century for England, the total proved too less for India who batted with far more authority in the chase, with Shafali Verma (20) and Mandhana giving India a solid start of 55 runs.

By the time the young opener departed in the sixth over, Verma had laid a solid foundation from where Mandhana just took off, hitting 13 boundaries and scoring at a strike rate of nearly 150.

With none of the damp and soggy English conditions to trouble India after their travails in their opening game, which they lost by nine wickets, India went about their task in a cool manner at Derby’s Incora County Ground.

England women lurched from 16/3 to 54/5 before 17-year-old left-hander Freya Kemp guided them to a face-saving score with an unbeaten 51.

Mandhana then put on an opening partnership of 55 with Verma, who departed following a sharp return catch to Sophie Ecclestone. However, an unbroken stand of 69 with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (29 not out) ensured victory for the tourists.

In between, Dayalan Hemalatha lost her wicket to Freya Davies. Mandhana brought up the winning runs with a boundary off Davies.

Brief scores: England 142 for 6 in 20 overs (Freya Kemp 51 not out; Sneh Rana 3/24) lost to India 146 for 2 in 16.4 overs (Smriti Mandhana 79 not out) by eight wickets.

R. Balki on Dulquer: Relatively fresh face with the acting muscle of a veteran

Paying tribute to the legendary late actor and filmmaker Guru Dutt, R. Balki came up with the psychological thriller ‘Chup: Revenge of the Artist. He opened up on why he brought Dulquer on board.

He said: “For ‘Chup’, I was lucky to have someone super talented, a superstar in one half of the country, who speaks Hindi as if it’s his mother tongue, and who can be a terrific discovery for the other half of the country. I wanted a relatively fresh face for Hindi Cinema with the acting muscle of a veteran, and then I found Dulquer.”

Dulquer is known for his roles in ‘Kurup’, ‘Hey Sinamika’, ‘Salute’, ‘Sita Ramam’, and others. Balki explained the movie to him over Zoom during the lockdown and he said beyond that, he never had to elaborate about the film to Dulquer.

The ‘Cheeni Kum’ director said: “I narrated the film to him on Zoom during the lockdown, and that was it. We met for thirty minutes or so in Cochin and then directly on the set. I never even had to do a reading or a workshop with him.”

‘Chup’ is all about the wrong criticism that an artist has to face for his creation and it is an homage by the director to Dutt’s 1959 classic ‘Kaagaz Ke Phool’.

It features Sunny Deol, Shreya Dhanwanthary, and Pooja Bhatt. The movie is directed by R. Balki and Produced by Gauri Shinde, Hope Filmmakers, and Pen Studios.

‘Chup: Revenge Of The Artist’ is set to release on September 23.

BYJU’s logs nearly Rs 10K crore revenue in FY22, tops estimates

0

While all eyes are on BYJU’s much-awaited FY21 financial results that were set to be revealed on Wednesday, the edtech major has registered nearly Rs 9,991 crore in revenues in its FY22 financial results and its core K12 education business is growing very fast, top sources have revealed.

In six months from February 2022 till July 2022, the company logged Rs 6,175 crore in revenue, breaking all previous sales records, three people close to the matter told IANS.

This is a substantial gain from its FY20 financial report when the company registered revenue of Rs 2,434 crore with a net profit of Rs 51 crore.

BYJU’s investors were ecstatic at the company’s growth in the core business in the recently-concluded meeting, sources told IANS, as the company logged 50 percent growth (year-on-year) in its core K12 India business at Rs 1,205 crore, leaving no competition anywhere near it.

After getting acquired by BYJU’s for $1 billion last year, Aakash Educational Services (AESL) has transformed into a hybrid edtech firm, expanding rapidly across the country, which is one of the key reasons behind BYJU’s FY22 success.

Meanwhile, after nearly 18 months delay of in “ironing out the complexities”, edtech major BYJU was all set to reveal its financial report for FY21.

The company had received an ‘unqualified’ report from auditor Deloitte late last month.

According to sources, there may be a substantial difference between the projected sales and the audited revenue in BYJU’s FY21 financial results.

Last valued at $22 billion, BYJU has so far raised over $6 billion in funding and aims to file an IPO in the US through the Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) route.

The company is likely to raise over $500 million (nearly Rs 3,900 crore) at a valuation of around $23 billion soon.

SAFF Women’s Championship: India go down to Bangladesh 0-3

0

The Indian Women’s Team suffered a 0-3 loss at the hands of Bangladesh in their final league match of the SAFF Women’s Championship at the Dasharath Stadium here on Tuesday.

However, this defeat had no impact on India’s semifinal qualification, as the Blue Tigresses had already booked their spot in the last four, where they are set to take on Nepal on Saturday (Sep 16) at the same venue.

M.S. Jahan Shopna netted a brace for Bangladesh, while Srimoti Sarkar got one to her name, to hand a comprehensive defeat to India.

Bangladesh had the early impetus, and took the lead in the 12th minute, when Sarkar threaded a ball through to Shopna, who slotted in between two defenders, and sent it past the keeper, to put her side in the lead.

India had their first chance of the game on the 19th when Anju Tamang earned a free-kick 22 yards from goal. Youngster Priyanka Devi stepped up to the dead ball but curled it just wide of the woodwork.

Minutes later, Sarkar doubled Bangladesh’s lead, as she darted into the Indian box from the left flank and finished past the keeper.

India tried to attempt several long diagonals to catch the Bangladeshi Highline off guard, but to no avail, as the first half soon came to an end with the latter taking a two-goal lead into the tunnel.

The Blue Tigresses started off well in the second half and soon earned a free-kick on the right flank, that was sent in by Priyanka, towards Renu, who had broken free of her marker. However, the ball took an awkward bounce off the turn, ricocheted off Renu’s stomach, and went safely into Bangladesh keeper Rupna Chakma’s hands.

As the golden opportunity was missed, there was more misery in store for the Indians a few minutes later. Bangladesh captain Sabina Khatun broke free on a counterattack and fed a through pass to Shopna, who duly rounded the keeper and slotted it into the net, making it three for her side.

India head coach Suren Chettri brought in the chances, as he introduced Soumya Guguloth and Kiran Pisda into the game, in place of Ratanbala Devi and Sandhiya Ranganathan, according to a report on the AIFF website.

The changes did bear some fruit in the form of a few attacks, as Anju Tamang often linked up with Soumya, to orchestrate a few attacks on the right. However, the Bangladesh defense stood firm and saw out the danger, taking home the three points.

Bangladesh top Group A with nine points, having won their three games, and will face Bhutan in the semifinal on September 16.

Visually impaired asst prof from Surat wins Rs 25 lakh on ‘KBC 14’

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was in awe of visually impaired ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 14’ contestant Aneri Arya from Surat and kept praising her for her logical reasoning skills and the calmness with which she approached the quiz-based reality show.

Despite the challenges that come with her disability, Aneri finally managed to win Rs 25 lakh on the show. The options given to her were (A) Belagavi (B) Kutch (C) Goa and (D) Junagadh and she opted for Goa, which was the right answer.

Though it was a critical moment for her, Big B left his seat to offer her a glass of water. But she got the answer right and took home Rs 25 lakh.

Talking about the winning amount on the show, Aneri said: “When Amitabh sir announced that I have won Rs 25 lakh, it took me a while to absorb the fact.
