Hughes, ISRO launch satellite internet service in India as Musk’s Starlink disappears

0

Satellite internet provider Hughes Communications India on Monday announced the commercial launch of India’s first high-throughput satellite (HTS) broadband service powered by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), as the Elon Musk-run SpaceX abandoned its affordable internet project Starlink in the country.

The service aims to deliver high-speed broadband across the country, including in the most remote areas beyond the reach of terrestrial networks, thus connecting enterprise and government networks.

“At ISRO, we are committed to exploring and expanding the ways we can work with the private sector to help improve people’s lives and bridge the digital divide,” said Dr S Somnath, Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, ISRO.

“”With the new HTS capabilities powered by ISRO satellites, we are confident that HCI will continue to deliver excellent quality satellite broadband services and further enhance the connectivity experience that accelerates India’s digital transformation,” Somnath added.

HCI provides satellite broadband across more than 200,000 business and government sites in India, supporting enterprises as well as strategic central and state government projects.

In use on more than 75 satellites, the Hughes JUPITER System is the de facto standard for both high-throughput and conventional satellite implementations worldwide.

“Available countrywide, HTS broadband from Hughes underscores our longstanding commitment to bridging the digital divide, delivering multi-megabit high-speed broadband at affordable rates,” said Partho Banerjee, president, and managing director, HCI.

“This new broadband service will support the high-bandwidth requirements of government organizations, financial companies, cellular operators, mining and energy companies, among other businesses, large and small, helping to connect India to a limitless future, he added.

The HTS broadband service from Hughes combines Ku-band capacity from ISRO’s GSAT-11 and GSAT-29 satellites with Hughes JUPITER Platform ground technology to deliver high-speed broadband across India, including in the most remote areas beyond the reach of terrestrial networks.

The service supports applications such as Wi-Fi hotspots for community internet access; managed SD-WAN solutions; backhaul to extend mobile network reach; and satellite internet for small businesses.

Last over of our batting innings changed the momentum: Sri Lanka’s Rajapaksa

0

Sri Lanka’s Player of the Match in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, has said the momentum shifted in his team’s favor in the final over of their batting inning when the islanders smashed 15 runs to finish on 170/6.

Sri Lanka then demolished Pakistan for 147 for a memorable 23-run victory.

Pakistan bowlers had managed to restrict their opponents to 149/6 till the second-last ball of the penultimate over, but Rajapaksa’s huge six on the last ball of the 19th over and then 15 runs in the 20th over — including a boundary and a maximum — shifted the momentum Sri Lanka’s way.

Rajapaksa, who made an unbeaten 71 off just 45 deliveries, said the productive last overtook the game out of Pakistan’s hands.

“It was not easy out there (when I came in to bat with five wickets down). They (Pakistan) were bowling well. Wanindu (Hasaranga) and I had a nice plan. The nature of the Sri Lanka team is to be positive and not have pressure. That helped us score runs,” said Rajapaksa.

“When Iftikhar (Ahmed) was bowling, Wanindu wanted to attack, but fortunately both of us were getting the runs. I had to change my game since Pakistan was top at the moment. Had to spend some time in the crease,” he added.

“When (head coach) Chris (Silverwood) came to talk to us at the drinks break, I told him that it looks like a 140 pitch. And eventually, we stayed till the end and the eventual target was much different. This is a game of momentum, and we set the momentum in the last over of the first innings (when the team scored 15 runs),” he added.

‘Player of the Tournament Wanindu Hasaranga, who scored 36 and took three wickets, said Pakistan bowlers were breathing fire when he came in to bat at 60/5, but he stuck to his role of playing “normal shots”.

“When I went to bat, we were 60/5 so we planned that if we can score over 150 that is a good total. And I said that I will play my own role, so that’s why I played my normal shots. In the first few overs, the ball was swinging. But when I was batting, the wicket was really good.”

On his bowling performance, the all-rounder said, “I love to bowl in the subcontinent. I like to bowl on the stumps; I think that helps me (be) successful. I try to bowl without boundaries so that’s why I got three wickets in the last over on Sunday. Our boys did a great job, especially after losing to Afghanistan,” he added.

India drawn in an interesting pool for 2023 Hockey World Cup, feels Sreejesh

0

Veteran India hockey goalkeeper PR Sreejesh feels his side has been drawn in an “interesting pool” for the FIH Odisha World Cup 2023 Bhubaneswar-Rourkela, scheduled to be played from January 13-29, with the likes of England and Wales adding to the excitement.

The Indian team has been drawn in Pool D with England, Spain, and Wales in the showpiece event.

“It is an interesting pool. England, Spain, and Wales all three are really good teams. Having played England and Wales at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games recently, I feel it will be a tough competition. But, we don’t need to think about it right now. At present, it’s all about us. We are going step-by-step and working on our game at the national camp. We are very excited and looking forward to playing the World Cup at home for the second consecutive time,” said 34-year-old Sreejesh, who played a big role in India returning from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with a bronze medal after four decades.

About the team’s prospects in the Pro League 2022-23 matches, Sreejesh said the matches in Odisha will be like a mock test for the 2023 World Cup.

“The Pro League is the best platform for us because we get to play against some of the top teams. The upcoming matches at home will be like a mock test for us, it will help us for the real challenge which we will face in January 2023. It will also help us in providing young players with the experience of playing high-level hockey. So, it’s a great opportunity for us as it will sort of help us set the tempo for the World Cup,” said Sreejesh a veteran of 266 international matches.

Sreejesh, who has been nominated for the FIH Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year Award 2021-22, credited team effort for his nomination for the award that he won last year.

“It is an honor for me to be nominated for the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award category. Even though I have been nominated as an individual, it wouldn’t have been possible without my teammates, who have been giving their best each and every day for the team. I am privileged to have such amazing teammates and coaching staff which has helped me bring out the best of my game and helped me to take it to another level.”

The experienced goalkeeper added, “Every time I get nominated for the awards, I feel I am raising the bar for myself and for the youngsters who aspire to become goalkeepers. If you want to reach this level, you have to keep working hard and strive to be better every day.”

Apart from Sreejesh, Harmanpreet Singh (FIH Player of the Year Men), Savita (FIH Goalkeeper of the Year Women), Sanjay (FIH Rising Star of the Year Men), Mumtaz Khan (FIH Rising Star of the Year Women), Graham Reid (FIH Men’s Team Coach of the Year Men) and Janneke Schopman (FIH Women’s Team Coach of the Year Women) have also been nominated for FIH Hockey Star Awards 2021-22.

Carlos Alcaraz clinches US Open title with four-set victory over Casper Ruud

0

Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz displayed explosive power and demonstrated impressive touch around the net as he overcame a fighting Norwegian Casper Ruud 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(1), 6-3 to clinch his maiden Grand Slam trophy — the US Open crown — and secure the world No. 1 ranking on Monday (IST).

The 19-year-old Alcaraz won 76 percent of net points (34/45) to outlast his opponent inside the Arthur Ashe Stadium after a nearly three hours and 20-minute slugfest. This was Alcaraz’s 51st tour-level victory of the season

Drained of energy, Alcaraz dropped to the floor following the victory and then climbed up the stands to embrace his coach and former player Juan Carlos Ferrero.

“It is something I have dreamt of since I was a kid. To be No. 1 in the world, to be champion of a Grand Slam, is something I have worked really, really hard (for),” Alcaraz was quoted as saying by ATP.

“It is tough to talk right now, I have lots of emotions. This is something I have tried to achieve. All the hard work I have done with my team and my family. I am just 19 years old, and all the tough decisions have been with my parents and my team as well. It is something that is really special for me,” he added.

It has been an energy-sapping US Open for Alcaraz, who endured three consecutive five-set matches to reach his first Grand Slam final. He spent 20 hours and 19 minutes on the court across six games on way to the title showdown with Ruud.

“There is no time to be tired in the final rounds of a Grand Slam… You have to be ready and give everything you have inside. It is something I work really hard for,” Alcaraz said.

Alcaraz has become the youngest Grand Slam winner since Spanish stalwart Rafael Nadal, 19, lifted the French Open trophy in 2005, while he is the youngest US Open winner since American legend Pete Sampras, 19, in 1990.

Alcaraz arrived in New York as the world No. 4 but leaves Flushing Meadows as the top-ranked player, becoming the youngest to rise to tennis’ pinnacle in the history of the ATP Rankings (since 1973).

The Spaniard has also equaled the biggest jump to No. 1, while he is the fourth Spaniard to climb to the top, joining coach Ferrero, Carlos Moya, and Nadal.

Alcaraz spent a total of 23 hours and 39 minutes on court on way to the crown, passing Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon in 2018 for most time played at a single Grand Slam tournament on record (since 1999).

Ruud, who had lost to Nadal in the French Open final in June, was bidding to become the 28th player and first Norwegian to jump to No. 1

“Things have been going so well. Today was a special evening,” Ruud said. “Both Carlos (Alcaraz) and I knew what we were playing for and what was at stake. We will be No. 2 and No. 1 in the world, I think it is fitting. I am disappointed of course that I am not No. 1, but No. 2 is not bad either. I am happy with that number and I will continue to chase for my first Grand Slam title and No. 1 ranking,” added Ruud.

Pakistan greats Wasim Akram and Shahid Afridi say Sri Lanka played like champions

0

Several top cricketers from across the world, including former greats from Pakistan, congratulated Sri Lanka for their amazing victory in the Asia Cup final against Pakistan at the Dubai International Stadium on Sunday night.

Former Pakistan skipper Wasim Akram said Sri Lanka came into the final with the mindset that they had to clinch the trophy.

A collective impressive performance by Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Wanindu Hasaranga, and Pramod Madushan led Sri Lanka to the title with a clinical 23-run win. This is Sri Lanka’s sixth Asia Cup title — 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, 2014, and 2022. After losing their opening game against Afghanistan, Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, and then again Pakistan to clinch the 2022 Asia Cup.

“Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. That was the mantra of this amazing Sri Lankan team so congratulations… better team won (the trophy) in the end,” wrote Akram.

Shahid Afridi “appreciated” the way the Sri Lankan cricketers played the entire tournament with a positive mindset.

“When I was watching the start of the match it looked like that Pakistan will make the match one-sided, and in the end, Sri Lanka made it one-sided. Have to appreciate the @OfficialSLC played the entire tournament sp today final, you deserve #AsiaCup2022, congrats and well played.”

Several other Pakistani cricketers lauded Sri Lanka for their efforts on Sunday with Saeed Ajmal too saying the islanders were deserving winners. However, Kamran Akmal and Mohammad Hafeez expressed disappointment with Pakistan’s performance, saying this should be a lesson for the side ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia next month.

“Disappointed! not the result we wanted Hard Luck @TheRealPCB boys. Congratulations @OfficialSLC on being champions #AsiaCup2022 Standout performance..have shown their Obsession passion and resilience for the title… they played another level of cricket… scintillating performance,” said Akmal.

Hafeez was more critical of the performance, saying, “Team Pakistan should learn from this defeat in #AsiaCup2022. The think tank of the team must take immediate decisions to make the best team for T20 World Cup 2022. @TheRealPCB.”

Sri Lanka greats such as Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene too took to social media to congratulate their side.

“Good toss to lose boys !! Showed character and passion to play for the country and was so proud of each and everyone enjoy the victory as the entire country will. brilliant team effort #AsiaCup2022,” said Jayawardene, while Sangakkara tweeted, “@OfficialSLC @dasunshanaka1 @BhanukaRajapak3 amazing win and thoroughly deserved. Played like a team of true champions. You have kept inspiring as a side.”

Lung cancer stimulate in the non-smoking humans than air pollution: Scientists

0

Scientists find out a new system that small particles of air may chance to produce lung cancer in people who are never smoked.

Air cells with climate change may also create disrupt cells of cancer, researchers also found treatment roots and protection from the dangerous forms.

Data of the particular air cells have been produced by the Francis Crick Institute and University, College London, Cancer Research UK, at ‘ESMO Congress 2022.

According to the data around 250,000 patients were died due to lung cancer worldwide per year, those cells which are produced by vehicles are attached to small cancer particles with risk in the air.

“The particles, which are released by the burning of fossil fuels, remaining sources are direct effects for the human body with the already dangerous cancer cells in the body,” They explained.

Actually, we have low chances of getting lung cancer from air pollution than smoking but we don’t have access to control our breath air on everybody.

“Weather public around the world knowingly or unknowingly, people are affected by pollution of air more than cigarette smoking chemicals. Present data will help to create new strategies for human health and build a good environment,” Charles Swanton from the Francis Crick Institute said.

Based on the human gene, other research on patients who are already suffering from lung cancer without smoking, and research on a gene called EGFR, new data has been discovered.

In a study of nearly half a million people living in England, South Korea, and Taiwan, exposure to increasing concentrations of airborne particulate matter (PM) 2.5 micrometers (I’m) in diameter was linked to an increased risk of NSCLC with EGFR mutations.

In the laboratory studies, scientists showed that the same pollutant particles (PM2.5) promoted rapid changes in airway cells which had mutations in EGFR and in another gene linked to lung cancer called KRAS, driving them towards a cancer stem cell-like state.

“We found that driver mutations in EGFR and KRAS genes, commonly found in lung cancers, are actually present in normal lung tissue and are a likely consequence of aging,” said Swanton.

However, when lung cells with these mutations were exposed to air pollutants, “we saw more cancers and these occurred more quickly than when lung cells with these mutations were not exposed to pollutants”, suggesting that air pollution promotes the initiation of lung cancer in cells harboring driver gene mutations.

“The next step is to discover why some lung cells with mutations become cancerous when exposed to pollutants while others don’t,” said Swanton.

Tony Mok from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, who was not involved in the study, said that the research is intriguing and exciting.

“It means that we can ask whether, in the future, it will be possible to use lung scans to look for pre-cancerous lesions in the lungs and try to reverse them with medicines such as interleukin-1I inhibitors,” said Mok.

“We don’t yet know whether it will be possible to use highly sensitive EGFR profiling on blood or other samples to find non-smokers who are predisposed to lung cancer and may benefit from lung scanning, so discussions are still very speculative,” he added.

Team India needs multi-faceted bowling line-up with injection of pace for Men’s T20 World Cup

0

After a disappointing campaign at the Asia Cup 2022, the Indian cricket team needs to rethink their strategy, especially in the bowling lineup, which is lacking sheer pace and penetration, before leaving for Australia next month for the all-important Men’s T20 World Cup.

At the Asia Cup, in absence of injured Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel, the Indian fast bowlers looked flat and lacked that penetration and killer instinct — required to seize crucial moments in a big game. Against slightly weaker opponents, they seemed to do a decent job but when quality batters put them under pressure, they faltered.

As always, the experienced campaigner Bhuvneshwar Kumar looked lethal with the new ball in the Asia Cup except for the one game against Sri Lanka. But, his poor outing in the 19th over in the two consecutive games against Pakistan and Sri Lanka (he leaked 19 and 14 runs), cost India the game.

There is no doubt that Bhuvneshwar has evolved as a death bowler over a period of time and also fetched success both in IPL and at the international level. But, the lack of pure pace does not make him as feared as someone like Bumrah, which will be a worry for India on true Australian pitches.

During his five-wicket haul against Afghanistan, Bhuvneshwar showed his mastery with swing but as a senior bowler, he is expected to provide wickets with both new and old ball without being one-dimensional.

On the other hand, young left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh also did well in patches. He was accurate with his length and lines in the death overs but he also doesn’t have that pace that can rattle batters at the tops.

Meanwhile, Avesh Khan, who was India’s third pacer in the Asia Cup also had an ordinary campaign. Before being out due to illness, he played both of India’s group-stage games in the Asia Cup but proved expensive, conceding 72 runs across six overs in the two games he played, including 1 for 53 in the 40-run win against Hong Kong.

His place in the final 15 for the World Cup is also in danger as of now.

Once Bumrah and Harshal get fit, they will be the automatic choice for the T20 World Cup and it also seems that Arshdeep-Bhuvneshwar will also be part of the squad. However, none of these bowlers except Bumrah have serious pace, which is crucial on bouncy pitches of Australia.

No doubt, Harshal is a crafty bowler, who relies on his variations, slower ones, and cutters to trap batters but in the absence of pace, he could also be lined up for big blows, like when the Irish batsmen tore into him in Dublin (4-0-54-0), or the Sri Lankans in Dharamsala (4-0-52-1).

Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh and ex-India coach Ravi Shastri feel that India can add some quality pace to the Indian squad with the inclusion of Md Shami and Umran Malik.

“Where is Umran malik (150km speed)? Why Deepak Chahar (a top quality swing bowler) wasn’t there? Tell me if these guys don’t deserve the chances. Why don’t Dinesh Karthik get chances consistently?? Disappointing,” Harbhajan said in his tweet, after India’s loss to Sri Lanka.

“I am completely amazed to see how Mohammed Shami has been sidelined by the current Indian team management and the selectors. The Indian bowling hasn’t looked that effective in this year’s Asia Cup and a veteran like Shami should have certainly made it to the squad,” Ravi Shastri said on Star Sports.

“I was quite surprised that you came here with just four fast bowlers. You needed that extra one. Someone like Mohammed Shami sitting at home baffles me. After the IPL he had, for him not to be able to make the cut is, obviously, I am seeing something different,” he added.

However, it seems that both Shami and Umran are not in the scheme of things of this current Indian management. The 32-year-old Shami hasn’t played a single T20I after India’s horrific ICC T20 World Cup 2021 campaign in the UAE while Umran has also played only three T20Is, conceding 112 runs and picking only two wickets.

Both fast bowlers would have certainly played more matches in the build-up to the World Cup if captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid wanted them in the squad. But, things change quickly in Indian cricket and one might see one of Shami and Umran getting a chance to play in the upcoming home series against Australia and South Africa before the mega event.

Shami had a memorable IPL 2022 campaign with debutants Gujarat Titans, finishing the season with 20 wickets in 16 games at 24.40 as the Titans lifted the trophy in their maiden season. The veteran also has experience of playing in Australian conditions, so he can get the advantage in the pecking order.

The likes of Mohammed Siraj, Mohsin Khan, and Prasidh Krishna also give India other pace options. So, it will be interesting to see the choice of selectors, Rohit and Dravid. But one can certainly say that India needs bowlers with express pace to get success in Australia. They also would want a lot of variety to the Indian bowling attack whether it’s fast or spin to choose their best playing XI according to their opposition team.

As far as the spin department is concerned, Yuzvendra Chahal looks certain for the World Cup, and with Ravindra Jadeja out with injury, Axar Patel in all likelihood will be there, because of his all-around ability.

However, there is no clarity on the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravi Bishnoi, and Kuldeep Yadav. Veteran off-spinner Ashwin gives the batting depth apart from his bowling while Bishnoi and Kuldeep could be that X-factor with their different and special skillsets.

It will also depend a lot on whether India wants to go to Australia with three spin options or four.

The best history and trends of T20 cricket suggest that the sides with a good bowling lineup have mostly won the trophy in multi-nation tournaments. So, India has a task to pick their best-possible bowling line-up for the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, scheduled to be played next month.

When Amala Akkineni made sweets for the whole unit of ‘Kanam’

Actress Amala Akkineni, whose performance in her just released bilingual film ‘Kanam’ has come in for widespread praise, said that she made sweets for her entire unit despite not having cooked for a while.

When asked about rumors that she had made sweets for the entire crew of ‘Kanam’, Amala said with a laugh: “Yes. In the movie, I play the role of a mother, and one day, when I was asked, ‘Ma, will you cook for us,’ I didn’t know what to say.”

“How can I tell them that I don’t know how to cook? So, I did it wholeheartedly. But it doesn’t come as easy when you don’t cook daily.

“The entire crew came home and ate the whole thing. Poor things, everyone ate in silence. But I doubt if it actually tasted good. You just have to ask them.”

The actress, who ruled the Tamil film industry with her brilliant performances before marrying Telugu star Nagarjuna and settling down in Hyderabad, said that her dubbing in Tamil for the film surprised director Shree Karthick.

She said: “I can speak Tamil well if given as a dialogue. But when I converse normally, I think in English and translate word by word into Tamil. So it will seem slow. As Telugu is my spoken language now, I mix it up with Telugu words too. But while dubbing, Shree Karthick was surprised. Because I will speak in Tamil first and it will be spot on. It was easier than Telugu.”

Virat Kohli’s heartfelt message to Aaron Finch on his ODI retirement

0

The great wishes are taken by the white-ball captain of Australia Aaron Finch on his retirement from One-day International (ODI) cricket from the Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

He played a great game in the IPL with Royal Challengers Bangalore(RCB)during the 2020 season, We both were part of the many matches between the two countries.

The last and final ODI lead match of Aaron Finch will be at Cairns with New Zealand on September 11. He had given the invincible lead in the previous series.

Aaron Finch thanked his cricket friends after announcing his retirement on Instagram

“Great ride for me, play with other players with was very privilege. My dream was to represent Australia in the game as a cricketer, I have got more opportunities than I expected. Thank you all of my friends, fans, and well-wishers” wrote on social media Aaron Finch.

Responding to the French Kohli written, ” Good job Finch! A great movement was when I played with you in RCB. Good luck for your great future.”

According to the french written on the Cricket Australia website on Saturday, He said, “Many great memories are there with this journey as player. Very lucky to be part of the ODI and I  had wished for many people and players opposite of my team.” adding to that, So now the time came for giving the chance for another the new leader to get a win in all possible ways in the coming world cup.

Steve Smith not been as ODI skipper after me, with out reason: Aaron Finch

0

In the One-day International (ODI) cricket match, which will be held on September 11 Against New Zealand at Cairns, Australia skipper Aaron Finch, who is going it retire from ODI, trusts there is no reason why Steve Smith is not in his place of captaincy.

Smith was the Australia skipper till the Test series against South Africa in 2018 where he was stripped of his role following the ball-tampering scandal involving him, vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft.

Smith and Warner were banned for a year following the scandal, also called ‘Sandpaper-gate’. Smith has since returned to the leadership role, being appointed deputy to Test captain Pat Cummins ahead of the Ashes series at home late last year.

The retirement of Finch, whose indifferent form in ODIs is one of the reasons behind the 35-year-old bidding adieu from the 50-over format, has brought into focus the ODI leadership issue as Australia prepares for the ODI World Cup in India next year.

With Test skipper Cummins making it clear he is not interested in white-ball captaincy, Smith has emerged as the likely choice.

“I don’t think (appointing Smith as captain would be an issue),” Finch was quoted as saying by The West Australian on Saturday.

“He captained a (Ashes) Test match in Adelaide after Pat (Cummins) was out with COVID. So I think that’s all been put to bed,” added Finch.

Finch believes Cummins could also manage the workload of captaining the side in all three formats but playing so many matches would be tough on the pace bowler.

Cummins has been rested from 28 of 65 matches in the past four years, according to the report.

“It’s pretty hard but I think if anyone can manage it’d be Pat (Cummins),” Finch said. “He is an unbelievably resilient person. He has shown brilliant leadership of the Test group and I’ve loved working with him. He takes everything in his stride. He’s got all the tools to do that.”

× Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz sets up US Open title clash against Norway’s Casper Ruud

0

Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz made it to his maiden Grand Slam final, with the third seed battling past home favorite Frances Tiafoe 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3 in four hours and 19 minutes to set up a winner-takes-all US Open clash against Casper Ruud of Norway on Saturday (IST).

Ruud moved past Russia’s Karen Khachanov 7-6(5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to reach his second Grand Slam final, further boosting his chances of rising to No. 1 in the ATP Rankings.

Alcaraz, who too is in line to become the new No. 1 should he win the summit clash, is the second teen to make the US Open final in the Open Era, joining the legendary Pete Sampras of the US.

“To be honest in the semifinal of a Grand Slam you have to give everything… we have to fight until the last ball. It doesn’t matter if we are fighting for five hours, or six hours. It doesn’t matter. You have to give everything on the court,” Alcaraz was quoted as saying by ATP.

“Frances (Tiafoe) gave everything on the court. This is amazing.”

Alcaraz has now won three successive five-setters lasting a total of 13 hours and 28 minutes, and if the Spaniard wins the title on Sunday, he will become the youngest world No. 1 in the history of the ATP Rankings since 1973.

“It’s amazing to be able to fight for big things. First time in the final of a Grand Slam. I can see the No. 1 in the world, but at the same time it’s so far away,” Alcaraz said. “I have one more to go against a player who is unbelievable. He deserves to play a final. He played in the final of a Grand Slam in Roland Garros. This is my first time.

“I’m going to give everything that I have. I will have to handle the nerves of being in a final of a Grand Slam, but obviously, I’m really, really happy and as I said before every match, I’m going to enjoy it. I’m going to enjoy the moment and let’s see what happens.”

“I gave everything I had left tonight,” Tiafoe said. “Too good Carlos, I am happy I got to share the big stage with you.”

Earlier, Ruud moved past Khachanov, soaking up the 27th seed’s powerful hitting and winning an epic 55-shot rally to win the first set.

Ruud, the fifth seed, who lost to Spanish stalwart Rafael Nadal in the French Open final, will become the first Norwegian to rise to No. 1 in the world if he defeats Alcaraz in the final.

“This match was another great match from my side,” Ruud said.

“I think we were both a bit nervous at the beginning, a few breaks back and forth. But you have to take into account that this match is probably the biggest in both of our careers. Of course, there will also be some nerves but I was fortunate to win that first set, which calmed my nerves a little bit.

“I played phenomenal in the second and Karen stepped up in the third. It was back and forth like every five-setter is, but I am just so happy. After Roland Garros, I was extremely happy but of course humble enough to think that could be my only final at a Grand Slam in my career. It doesn’t come easy, but here I am back again a couple (of) months later.”

The 23-year-old had never gone beyond the third round in four previous appearances at Flushing Meadows.

Google to bring new accessibility, sharing features to Android devices

Tech giant Google has announced that it is bringing several new features — including Nearby Share — to help users stay productive, communicate with loved ones, and enjoy entertainment across devices.

The company said that Nearby Share lets users quickly and securely share files between nearby Android phones, tablets, and Chromebooks, whether they are photos or videos, or even entire folders.

“In the next few weeks, you will be able to use Nearby Share to effortlessly transfer files across your own devices,” Scott Blanksteen, Senior Director, Product Management, Android, said in a statement.

“Just select Android devices logged into your Google account from the sharing menu to quickly share files between them. And once you have opted in, transfers between devices you own are automatically accepted — even if your screen is off,” Blankstein added.

The company said that it recently introduced a new look and updated Google Workspace apps for bigger screens and now it is continuing to optimize users’ favorite Google apps on tablets to make multi-tasking a breeze, starting with redesigned widgets for Google Drive and Keep.

“With an updated Google Drive widget, three home screen buttons now offer one-touch access to your Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets files,” the company said.

“And in Google Keep, a bigger widget and font size makes note-taking, to-do lists, and reminders easy to access,” it added.

The company has added many new Emoji Kitchen mashups, available as stickers via Gboard.

To bring people closer, the company said it is also adding new shared experiences in Google Meet.

“With live sharing features, you can instantly co-watch YouTube videos and play classic games with up to 100 friends and family members at a time,” the company said.

“So even if you are far apart, you can maintain traditions like a movie and game nights. This feature is rolling out to Android phones and tablets,” it added.

Queen Elizabeth II lived an extraordinary life: Commonwealth Secy-Gen

0

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland on Friday offered tributes to Queen Elizabeth II, who died the previous day aged 96, describing her as an extraordinary person who lived an extraordinary life, and her devotion to duty was only matched by her skill as Head of the Commonwealth of Nations.

In a tribute, Scotland said: “It is with the greatest sorrow and sadness that we mourn the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. After a long life of faith, duty, and service, a great light has gone out.

“Her Majesty was an extraordinary person, who lived an extraordinary life: a constant presence and example for each of us, guiding and serving us all for as long as any of us can remember.

“Throughout her reign and seven decades of extraordinary change and challenge, Her Majesty was the epitome of duty, stability, wisdom, and grace.

“Her Majesty loved the Commonwealth, and the Commonwealth loved her. During her reign she travelled more than any monarch in history, visiting every part of our family of nations. Between 1971 and 2018, she missed only one Head of Government Meeting. Her devotion to duty was only matched by her skill as Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, always a generous host and consummate diplomat.”

The Secretary-General said in Her Majesty’s final Commonwealth Day message, that she described “our family of nations as a modern, vibrant and connected Commonwealth that combines a wealth of history and tradition with the great social, cultural and technological advances of our time”.

“That the Commonwealth stands ever taller is a credit to all who have been involved. The growth and vibrancy of our modern Commonwealth are a credit to her and a testament to her dedication, wisdom, and leadership.

“In 1947, before she ascended to the throne, she stated that ‘whether my life is long or short I will dedicate it to the service of the Commonwealth. Her Majesty honored that promise,” Scotland added.

As the sixth Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, she said she would always be “grateful for her warmth and kindness to me”.

“Our interactions were a delight, and it was wonderful to see her passion and animation whenever discussing anything relating to the Commonwealth. Her long years of interaction and partnership with generations of world leaders and their people, particularly the young, gave her extraordinary insight, which brought ever-more life and meaning to her service,” the Secretary-General added.

Elizabeth breathed her last at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, one of her four ‘royal’ residences and possibly her favorite.

Her family from near and afar had gathered there to be at her side in her final moments.
