UP joins lottery lobby inspired West Bengal’s stand on 28 per cent GST for online skill gaming

0

West Bengal, a state with a flourishing lottery business, has been joined by Uttar Pradesh, where there is a lottery ban, to push for a 28 percent GST for online skill gaming.

This move in West Bengal could be prompted by the lottery lobby, according to a report published by industry publication G2G.

An overwhelming majority of the group of ministers (GoM) on the GST matter felt that online gaming, horse racing, and casinos are three different sectors. Therefore, they should all be treated separately.

Striking a contrarian note, the state government of West Bengal has called for a uniform GST rate of 28 percent on online gaming, casinos, and horse racing without making a distinction between games of skill and games of chance.

This stand of the West Bengal government echoes that of the All India Federation of Lottery Trade and Allied Industries (AIFLTAI), an umbrella organization of lottery distributors, stockists, and agents.

In December 2021, AIFLTAI had written to the GST GoM requesting for a uniform GST rate for lottery and gaming.

This stand is supported by Uttar Pradesh, a state that has banned lottery, in a highly unusual move. This has left observers flummoxed as both states are on different ends of the political spectrum and Uttar Pradesh is known for its very strong stand against lottery and gambling.

In fact, in 2020, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath told the UP assembly that setting up casinos in the state would lead to the degradation of moral values and create a law and order crisis.

Meanwhile, experts say that the online gaming industry, which is part of India’s showcase startup sector, will take a major hit if they are treated on par with the casino and lottery sector.

A report by BCG and Sequoia India said India’s online gaming industry is expected to grow to USD5 billion by 2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has talked about the huge potential of the Indian gaming sector in making a mark globally.

All of this, industry experts say, could go on a downward spiral, if the online gaming sector is equated with the casino and lottery sector.

Government imposes 20% export duty on rice

0

Owing to poor rain in major rice producing states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, the Centre on Thursday imposed 20 per cent duty on export of various grades of rice.

According to a Finance Ministry notification, 20 percent export duty on rice in husk, husked rice and milled rice has been imposed which would be applicable from September 9.

The move would help rein in prices of rice across the country.

The decision to impose 20 per cent export duty on rice comes after wheat exports were banned in May.

Inadequate rainfall in rice producing states has raised concerns of poor output, which has led to the imposition of export duty on the commodity.

Google slammed for allowing only fantasy sports, rummy apps on Play Store in India

0

As Google announced to start a pilot to allow fantasy sports and rummy apps on Play Store in India, industry experts said on Thursday that the tech giant’s approach is “clearly discriminatory” and it should have an inclusive approach to adding other games of skill under the umbrella of its pilot for local developers.

Roland Landers, CEO of All India Gaming Federation (AIGF), said that it is a progressive step that needs to be inclusive.

Starting September 28, Play Store will begin a limited-time pilot allowing for the distribution of daily fantasy sports (DFS) and Rummy apps to users in India by developers incorporated in India.

“Games of skill is a broad category and fantasy gaming and rummy are just two game formats considered in this pilot program by Google. Poker too is considered a game of skill by several High courts in India. Likewise, there are numerous developers who offer classic as well as innovative games of skill,” Landers said in a statement.

He said that Google Play Store has almost 95 percent market share of app distribution platforms in India.

“This approach by Google will especially be challenging for MSMEs and new developers/platforms who will not be able to compete with established companies as their varied skill game offerings will be kept out of the Play Store ecosystem,” the AIGF CEO said.

India has seen a spurt in e-sports, where players like Dream11 and Mobile Premier League (MPL) are now ruling the turf.

Suraj Chokhani, Managing Director, Ability Games (11wickets.com, rummy24.com, pokerlion.com) said that despite Google’s “hegemony and seemingly arbitrary policies against gaming apps”, the Indian online gaming industry has grown from strength to strength garnering over 300 million downloads.

“A lot more clarity is needed on the payment gateways that the apps listed on Playstore can use, the criteria for listing, and whether other skill-based gaming apps will also be allowed. We will have to wait and watch to see how the situation unfolds in the near future,” Chokhani said in a statement.

According to Abhishek Malhotra, Managing Partner, TMT Law Practice, the selective exclusion of all ‘Real Money Games’ (RMG) except Rummy and Fantasy is clearly discriminatory.

“There needs to be a rethink on this decision failing which Google may invite litigation. This certainly creates an unnecessary distinction between the different kinds of games offers under the RMG category in the fast-emerging gaming industry,” said Malhotra.

A Google spokesperson said in a statement that they are constantly exploring ways for local developers to build successful businesses and offer delightful experiences on Google Play.

“Through this pilot program, we are taking a measured approach that will help us collate learnings and retain an enjoyable and safe experience for our users,” the spokesperson added.

Action, gore, good acting: ‘Vikram Vedha’ trailer promises a feast

The trailer of the upcoming film ‘Vikram Vedha’, which stars Saif Ali Khan and Hrithik Roshan in the titular roles, was released by the cast here on Thursday.

Giving a sneak peek of the story, the trailer makes for a compelling watch as it challenges the notion of what’s right and what’s wrong and highlights the grey area that human beings are known for.

The trailer opens with medium shots of Saif and Hrithik with different frame directions as Vijay Raaz spins magic with his voice-over. It introduces us to the characters and their world before it spirals into a full-blown action spectacle with several high-speed shots and cinematic gore for dramatic effect.

Hrithik, who plays the titular character of gangster Vedha, seamlessly gets into the skin of his character with body language, mannerisms, and diction. Saif, on the other hand, looks amazing as the tough cop Vikram, who is in hot pursuit of Vedha.

The film, which also stars Rohit Saraf, Radhika Apte, Yogita Bihani, Sharib Hashmi, and Satyadeep Mishra, is an action-thriller written and directed by Tamil director duo Pushkar-Gayatri.

The story unfolds a cat-and-mouse chase, where Vedha – a master storyteller helps Vikram peel back layers through a series of stories leading to thought-provoking moral ambiguities.

Presented by T-Series and Reliance Entertainment in association with Friday Filmworks and Jio Studios, ‘Vikram Vedha’ is a YNOT Studios Production. The film will hit the big screens globally on September 30.

Asia Cup 2022: Bhuvneshwar Kumar picks five as India thrash Afghanistan by 101 runs

0

Senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar blew the top-order away with his skillful bowling to record his career-best T20I figures as India beat Afghanistan by 101 runs in a dead-rubber match of Super Four stage in Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium on Thursday.

After Virat Kohli ended his drought of not scoring a century in international cricket for 1020 days with a sensational career-best 122 off just 61 balls to power India to 212/2, Bhuvneshwar’s spell of 5/4 dismantled the Afghanistan challenge, restricting them to 111/8 in 20 overs.

Bhuvneshwar was right on the money from the word go, shaping one back in to trap Hazratullah Zazai lbw. Two balls later, he produced an absolute jaffa to shatter Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s stumps to send both openers back to the pavilion in the opening over.

Swinging the ball both ways and relentlessly pitching in the right areas, Bhuvneshwar was making Afghanistan batters dance to his tunes. Karim Janat gave a thick edge to the first slip on an outswinger while Najibullah Zadran missed his flick and trapped lbw on an inswinger.

After Arshdeep Singh trapped Mohammad Nabi lbw, Bhuvneshwar completed his five-wicket haul by having Azmatullah Omarzai chipping a knuckleball straight to cover. Rashid Khan hit a couple of boundaries before holing out in the deep off Deepak Hooda’s first ball.

Ibrahim Zadran struck some boundaries while Mujeeb Ur Rahman played the long handle against Ravichandran Ashwin. Though Mujeeb eventually was castled by Ashwin, Zadran got his fifty with sixes off Dinesh Karthik in the final over. But, by then, the result was a foregone conclusion.

Brief Scores: India 212/2 in 20 overs (Virat Kohli 122 not out, KL Rahul 62; Fareed Malik 2/57) beat Afghanistan 111/8 in 20 overs (Ibrahim Zadran 64 not out, Mujeeb Ur Rahman 18; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 5/4, Deepak Hooda 1/3) by 101 runs

NASA picks Axiom Space to deliver spacesuits for astronauts’ moon walk

0

the US space agency has selected Axiom Space to deliver a moonwalking system for astronauts for the Artemis III mission, which will land Americans on the surface of the Moon for the first time in over 50 years.

This award — the first one under a competitive spacesuits contract — is for a task order to develop a next-generation Artemis spacesuit and supporting systems, and to demonstrate their use on the lunar surface during Artemis III, NASA said in a statement.

With this award, NASA has put in place another cornerstone of returning astronauts to the Moon under Artemis to support continued scientific breakthroughs, benefiting humanity back on Earth. As part of its planned human lunar spaceflight missions, NASA will land the first woman and first person of color on the Moon.

After reviewing proposals from its two eligible spacesuit vendors, NASA selected Axiom Space for the task order, which has a base value of $228.5 million.

“NASA is proud to partner with commercial industry on this historic mission that will kickstart the United States building a lasting presence on the surface of the Moon,” said Lara Kearney, manager of NASA’s Extravehicular Activity and Human Surface Mobility program.

“What we learn on Artemis III and future missions on and around the Moon will pave the way for missions to Mars. Spacesuits enable us to literally take that next step.”

Axiom Space will be responsible for the design, development, qualification, certification, and production of its spacesuits and support equipment that will meet these key agency requirements for Artemis III.

NASA experts will maintain the authority for astronaut training, mission planning, and approval of the service systems. Axiom Space will be required to test the suits in a spacelike environment before Artemis III.

Under the indefinite-delivery and indefinite quantity of the Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services contract, eligible industry partners compete for task orders that will provide a full suite of capabilities for NASA’s spacewalking and moonwalking needs during the period of performance through 2034.

Through Artemis, NASA will land the first woman and the first person of color on the Moon, paving the way for a long-term, sustainable lunar presence and serving as a stepping stone for future astronaut missions to Mars.

Meanwhile, the US space agency has attempted twice to send an unscrewed Artemis I mission to the moon but failed owing to a hydrogen leak in one of the rocket’s engines.

Asia Cup 2022: Actually, I was shocked, this is the last format I thought, says Kohli on unbeaten 122

0

Very few people would have predicted that Virat Kohli would break his drought of centuries in international cricket in a T20I match. But on Thursday, in a dead rubber against Afghanistan in Dubai, the wait of 1020 days ended with a sensational career-best 122 off just 61 balls in Asia Cup 2022.

After he hit his 71st international century, to be on par with former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, coming after a prolonged lean patch of nearly three years and a break from the game for a month and a half, Kohli himself was surprised over getting his maiden T20I hundred which took India to 212/2.

“Last two and a half years have taught me a lot. I am going to turn 34 in a month. So those angry celebrations are a thing of the past. Actually, I was shocked. This is the last format I thought,” said Kohli after the Indian innings ended.

Kohli was expressive in dedicating his 71st international century to his wife, actor, and producer Anushka Sharma, for helping him clear mental cobwebs. “It was an accumulation of a lot of things. The team has been open and helpful. I know there was a lot of stuff going outside.”

“And I kissed my ring. You see me standing here because one person has put things in perspective for me. That’s Anushka. This hundred is for her and for our little daughter Vamika as well.”

With his unbeaten 122, laced with 12 fours and six sixes, in what was a mix of classic and brutal cricket shots at the same time, coming at a strike rate of 200, Kohli was at his vintage best, using feet for taking boundaries off-spinners and smashing pacers for fun.

“When you have someone next to you having conversations putting things in perspective as Anushka has been… when I came back I was not desperate. After six weeks off I was refreshed. I realized how tired I was. Competitiveness doesn’t allow it, but this break allowed me to enjoy the game again,” concluded Kohli.

Ranvir Shorey opens up on playing negative lead in ‘Midday Meeal’

Bollywood actor Ranvir Shorey talks about playing a negative lead in the movie ‘Midday Meeal’ and the actor says he feels satisfied to be part of a movie that deals with social issues rather than just focusing on usual subjects of romance or action.

He says: “Working on ‘Midday Meeal’ has really been one of those projects in my life which have touched my heart. We often make big movies which have lots of action, drama and many more. But we never focus on social issues, which are very important for each one of us to know.

“This movie has undoubtedly taught me the importance of food, and I really hope that the audience will like this movie as it has something that has never seen me in such a character”.

Ranvir, who had worked in films such as ‘Jism’, ‘Lakshya’, ‘Bheja Fry’ and also hosted the celebrity dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 7’ and had also been part of out-of-the-box projects like ‘Kadakh’.

For him, working with Anil on his recent project is quite a fulfilling experience.

He comments: “Anil is such a hardworking soul, who made sure that what message he wanted to send to the audience should be told over the big screen. He has made sure to bring the best from each actor to spread this strong message massively to the audience. I really loved working with him.”

The poster of the film is already out featuring actor-director Anil Singh on it. It is all set to be released on October 14.

‘Thalapathy’ shoot: When Kamal helped Rajini outsmart Mani Ratnam!

Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth has now disclosed how actor Kamal Haasan helped him outsmart director Mani Ratnam while shooting for the blockbuster ‘Thalapathy’.

Speaking at the audio and trailer launch of director Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, Rajinikanth said: “I wish to share one or two incidents with you now about what happened while working with Mani Ratnam.

“It was the first day of shooting of ‘Thalapathy’. The shooting was happening in Mysore and I arrived at around midnight from Bombay where I had been shooting for a Hindi film. The next morning, I went for make-up and the make-up man said that no make-up was to be put on for me. ‘Just put some foundation,’ is what I was told. I was concerned. I was acting with Mammootty, who looked like a fresh apple. I eventually agreed.

“Then came the question of costumes. The customer arrived with a pair of loose pants and shirts. I told him,’ What is this? Go, tighten the clothes and bring them to me.’. The customer tried to explain, ‘Sir, sir has asked…’. I said to tighten and bring them to me.’ He hesitantly responded.

“Then came the issue of footwear. They had slippers for me, so I asked them, ‘What is this?’ I was wearing my walking shoes. I told them I would shoot them.

“So, when I went before Mani Ratnam for the shot, he asked me, ‘Please change into your costume.’ I told him that I was in costume. He looked at me, from top to bottom, and hesitantly agreed.

“The scene was to be shot on the banks of a river and it was to feature Shobana and me. For a long time, both Shobana and I were ready and, in our positions, waiting for shooting to roll but nothing happened. Director Mani Ratnam, his wife Suhasini, and some other members of the crew were engaged in a deep consultation for a long time.

“Actress Shobana, the prankster that she is, asked me, ‘What are they discussing for so long, sir? Are they planning to remove you and put Kamal Haasan instead?” Eventually, the shot was taken.

“The next day, when my make-up man arrived, I told him, ‘No make-up. They have told me not to put on any makeup.’ I wore the loose clothes and slippers they wanted me to wear and began work.

“But then, shooting was difficult. Every shot would require 12 or 13 takes and I was getting frustrated. The issue was I had stocked expressions that I would use in films. I had ready-made expressions for love, surprise, fear, doubt… When I used them, Mani Ratnam would not agree. He would say, ‘You feel, feel…’

“In my mind, I would wonder what ‘feel, feel…’. So, after a while, when I could no longer handle it, I called up Kamal Haasan and said that it was proving too difficult.

“Kamal laughed on the phone and said, ‘I knew it. I too faced the same problem. I will give you a suggestion. When he asks you to do something, ask him to enact it and show it. Then, sit and pretend to brood over it and then exactly replicate what he does and the shot will be okayed.'”

“I did what Kamal said. I would ask Mani Ratnam to enact what he wanted me to do. Pretend as if I was deep in thought, thinking about the scene while smoking cigarettes and finally, reproducing what he had done, exactly in the same fashion. The shot would be okayed.”

Saying this, Rajinikanth turned to Kamal Haasan, who was standing beside him on stage, and said, ‘Thank You Kamal’, even as Mani Ratnam roared with laughter from the audience.

Actress Katrina Kaif says that her actor-husband Vicky Kaushal was never on her radar. She added that it was her destiny and it was really meant to be.

And the first person she confessed to being smitten by Vicky was director Zoya Akhtar, at whose party cupid struck the two lovers.

Calling her relationship “unexpected and out of the blue”, Katrina further shared: “It was my destiny and it was really meant to be. There were so many coincidences that at one point all of it just felt so unreal.”

‘Koffee With Karan’ Season 7 breaths of air on Disney+ Hotstar.

There’s no time to be jealous, says Kamal Haasan

Stating that there was no time to be jealous of another’s success, actor Kamal Haasan said that this was a fact that both Tamil Superstar Rajinikanth and he realized at a very young age.

Participating in the audio and trailer launch event of director Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ that was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Tuesday night, Kamal said: “The film industry is a small family. In this family, there is no time for jealousy.

“When I don’t have the time to do my work, there is no time to be jealous. This is something that he (pointing to Rajinikanth) and I realized at a very young age.

“We have seen victories. Big ones. Double victories. Defeats. When victories come (irrespective of whom it comes to), we rejoice, because one’s defeat will affect the whole industry and one’s victory will lift up the entire industry.”

Congratulating A.R. Rahman, the music director of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, Kamal said that every song that the composer had scored for the film had increased his heartbeats.

Lewis Capaldi reveals he has Tourette’s Syndrome

Singer Lewis Capaldi has been diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome. As for why the 25-year-old singer has decided to go public with his diagnosis, he notes that he doesn’t want fans to think he’s been “taking cocaine or something”.

“I have been diagnosed with Tourette’s. I wanted to speak about it because I didn’t want people to think I was taking cocaine or something,” the ‘Someone You Loved’ hitmaker explained, reports aceshowbiz.com.

Lewis is learning to live with the symptoms of the condition, and the chart-topping star has even had Botox injections to help to control his tics.

Speaking with The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre column, he said: “My shoulder twitches when I am excited, happy, nervous or stressed. It is something I am living with. It is not as bad as it looks.”

Lewis also addressed the issue during an Instagram Live session with his fans.

“It’s a new thing. I haven’t really learned much about it. I got Botox on my shoulder to stop it from moving but I’m learning new ways to cope all the time. Some days it’s more painful than others, sometimes it’s quite uncomfortable but I guess that’s it,” the award-winning star shared.

Lewis has wondered about his health over the last few years, admitting that the diagnosis now “makes so much sense”.

The singer, who released his debut album, ‘Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent’, in 2019, said: “When they told me, ‘We think you’ve got Tourette’s’, I was like, ‘Do you know what, that makes so much sense. When I look back at my interviews from 2018 I can see that I’m doing it.”

Prior to the diagnosis, Lewis feared that he had a “degenerative disease”.

He shared: “It comes and goes. Sometimes I can go months without doing it. I thought I had some horrible degenerative disease so I’ll take Tourette’s.”

Mani Ratnam has won the competition to make ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ into a film: Kamal Haasan

Stating that there was a competition between him and director Mani Ratnam as to who would make writer Kalki’s classic novel, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ into a film, actor and politician Kamal Haasan said that the director had won that competition and that one must appreciate him for his determination.

“I knew for a fact that someday ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ would get made into a film. I knew either Mani Ratnam would make it or I would make it,” Kamal said at the grand audio and trailer launch of the event that was held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium in the city on Tuesday.

“In fact, there was a competition between us as to who would make this epic novel into a film. While I made efforts, he continuously kept making efforts and won.

“This is a big successful film. This will be a very important film in Mani Ratnam’s victories list,” Kamal said and went on to recall a time when they (Mani Ratnam and Kamal) used to lean on a motorcycle in his home in Alwarpet and talk wonder if they could ever make films like ‘Sholay’. This is that,” Kamal said.

Congratulating producer Lyca Subashkaran for having produced such a film, Kamal told the producer that this would be one of his most important films as well.

The actor, along with Superstar Rajinikanth, released the trailer of director Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan-I ‘ in the presence of a packed stadium at around 11.45 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Rajinikanth, Kamal launch magnificent trailer of Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’

Tamil superstars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan jointly released a fantastic trailer of director Mani Ratnam’s much ‘waited for the magnum opus, ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’, which is based on the epic novel by writer Kalki, at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in the city.

The beautifully cut trailer, which was released just 15 minutes before midnight on Tuesday, promises a glorious film that narrates the story of India’s greatest empire, the Cholas.

The three-minute 30-second-long Tamil trailer begins with Kamal Haasan narrating in the background what the movie has to offer.

“A thousand years ago, before the golden era of the Chola empire dawned, a comet appeared in the Chola sky. The Oracles predict that the comet would claim the life of someone from the Royal family of the Cholas.

“Rivals surround the kingdom. The sea grows turbulent and treachery invades the Chola palace,” Kamal says even as we are treated to a glimpse of some glorious shots by cinematographer Ravivarman.

The trailer introduces Vikram as Aditya Karikalan and then goes on to show Jayam Ravi as Arun Mozhi Varman, who later on goes on to become the great Raja Raja Cholan.

The trailer defines Arun Mozhi’s character by showing him utter one dialogue. He says: “My father commanded me to bear arms for the Chola Kingdom. I am the kingdom’s defender and servant to its people.”

Next to be introduced is Karthi as Vallavarayan Vanthiyathevan. The gifted, street-smart warrior and trusted friend of both Aditha Karikalan and Arunmozhi Varman, says: “I am Aditha Karikalan’s friend. I had the good fortune of fighting shoulder to shoulder, alongside my prince.”

The trailer then goes on to give an idea of the plot. A scene in which Aditya Karikalan tells Vanthiyathevan, “our spies have warned us that an untoward incident is to take place at the Kadambur fort. Find out what is being plotted” is shown.

The trailer gives a glimpse that there are people who are looking to usurp the throne.

We are introduced to Trisha’s character Kundavai, a very smart and capable woman. She tells Vanthiyathevan: “I want you to go to Lanka. Find my brother Arunmozhi and bring him to me.”

Meanwhile, the trailer also gives away the fact that Arun Mozhi Varman has no intention of setting foot in Thanjavur.

And finally, the trailer introduces the audience to one of the most important characters of ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ — Nandini, played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

The trailer shows Nandini looking to thwart Aditya Karikalan and Arunmozhi Varman from joining forces. She says to her husband: “We have to ensure that Arunmozhi Varman and Karikalan do not join forces.”

The brilliant trailer has heightened expectations from the film, the first part of which is to hit screens on September 30.
