Instagram, YouTube start discouraging users from sharing videos to TikTok

Threatened by the meteoric rise of Chinese short-form video platform TikTok, Meta-owned Instagram, and Google-owned YouTube have introduced new features to discourage their short-video app users from cross-platform sharing.

According to reports, when trying to download an edited clip to an iPhone in Instagram Reels, the audio from the clip just disappeared.

“It means if you want to export the footage from Reels to use in another app (like TikTok), you have to actually post the Reel first in order to save the sound,” reports The Verge.

It was possible recently to download the clip with audio and use it on TikTok.

Creators can still post the same Reels video to TikTok but they need to first upload the video to Instagram, edit it, download that clip and send it over to TikTok, Athe report mentioned late on Thursday.

On the other hand, when creators now make a video on YouTube Shorts, they will not be able to download the video and cross-post it to other apps without a “YouTube watermark”.

“If you’re a creator who downloads your Shorts from YouTube Studio to share across other platforms, you’ll now find a watermark added to your downloaded content,” YouTube said in an update.

“We’ve added a watermark to the Shorts you download so your viewers can see that the content you’re sharing across platforms can be found on YouTube Shorts,” the company added.

The new YouTube Shorts feature is being rolled out over the next few weeks on desktop, and the company plans to expand to mobile over the coming months.

Google to reduce ‘low-quality, unoriginal’ content in Search results

Google is rolling out new updates to cut low-quality and unoriginal content in Search results, making it easier for people to find helpful content.

A search ranking update called the “Helpful Content Update” will start rolling out globally to English language users on August 22.

“We know people don’t find the content helpful if it seems like it was designed to attract clicks rather than inform readers. So starting next week for English users globally, we’re rolling out a series of improvements to Search to make it easier for people to find helpful content made specifically by and for people,” said Danny Sullivan, Public Liaison for Search.

This update will help make sure that “unoriginal, low-quality content doesn’t rank highly in Search, particularly for online-educational materials, entertainment, shopping, and tech-related content, he said in a blog post late on Thursday.

The new ranking update joins a similar effort related to ranking better quality product review content over the past year, which will also receive an update.

Together, these launches are part of a broader, ongoing effort to reduce low-quality content and make it easier to find content that feels authentic and useful in Search, said Google.

“For example, if you search for information about a new movie, you’ll see more results with unique, authentic information, so you’re more likely to read something you haven’t seen before,” the company informed.

Last year, Google kicked off a series of updates to show more helpful, in-depth reviews based on first-hand expertise in search results.

“We’ve continued to refine these systems, and in the coming weeks, we’ll roll out another update to make it even easier to find high-quality, original reviews,” said the company.

“It’s after a long time that I have had the pleasure of watching a good movie thanks to ‘Sita Ramam’,” Naidu tweeted in Telugu. He also complimented director Hanu Raghavapudi, producer Aswini Dutt and his Swapna Movie Makers team for coming out with a movie devoid of disturbing noises, and full of eye-pleasing visuals.

‘Sita Ramam’ which was released on August 5, has come as a relief to Tollywood which has been reeling under a series of box office disasters in recent times.

The romantic drama set against the backdrop of war follows the love story between a soldier played by Dulquer Salmaan and his lady love, played by Mrunal Thakur. Rashmika Mandanna plays a very significant role in Afreen. The story spans the period between the sixties and eighties.

A Pakistani drone was forced to withdraw along the International Border (IB) on Thursday by alert Border Security Force (BSF) troops in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district, official sources said.

The sources said the drone was spotted in the Sultanpur area on the Indian side of the IB.

“The drone was fired upon and forced to withdraw to the Pakistan side of the IB. A search operation is now going on in the area,” they added.

Emilia Clarke called ‘short, dumpy’ by Australian TV CEO, company apologises

As the ‘Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon’ was released in Sydney, Patrick Delany, the CEO of Australian television company Foxtel, referred to actress Emilia Clarke as a “short, dumpy girl.”

Foxtel, an Australian pay television company, is the country’s home for ‘Game of Thrones, reports Variety.

As reported by Australian publication Crikey, Delany was giving a speech ahead of the ‘House of the Dragon’ premiere screening and tried to make a joke about the first time he watched ‘Game of Thrones.

The CEO said: “I was like, ‘What’s this show with the short, dumpy girl walking into the fire?'”

Delany was referencing Emilia Clarke’s character, Daenerys Targaryen, who famously walks through fire during the series.

An attendee at the Sydney premiere told Crikey that “there was a bit of a gasp” after Delany made the comment.

A Foxtel spokesperson told Crikey after the event that Delany’s remark was “meant to be self-deprecating.”

The company issued a statement that reads: “The aim was to convey that for him, ‘Games of Thrones was something very different for television in 2011 and that Emilia Clarke went from relatively unknown to one of the most recognized and most-loved actors in television and film.

“On behalf of Mr. Delany, the Foxtel Group apologies if his remarks were misunderstood and caused any offense,” the statement concluded.

Since ‘House of the Dragon’ takes place hundreds of years before ‘Game of Thrones, Clarke is not involved in any capacity with the new HBO prequel series.

Foxtel announced in 2019 that the controversial ‘Game of Thrones series finale led to the biggest influx of overnight subscribers in the company’s history.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has refrained from comparing Indian captain Rohit Sharma with others, saying each captain has a different perspective of the game and has their own way to lead the team.

The former captain added that Rohit Sharma has different leadership qualities and the others had something different. He said Rohit as a captain has a laid-back and composed attitude and he should be given some time to produce better results.

“Rohit Sharma has a bit of a laid-back attitude. He wants to do things in a very calm and composed way. He is not in a hurry all the time, he takes things in a very cautious way and not someone who’s into your face all the time,” Ganguly said on the sidelines of a function in Kolkata.

“MS Dhoni handled the transition fantastically. Then came Virat Kohli who has a fantastic record. He was a different sort of captain, he did things differently. Every individual is different, I don’t compare captains, everybody has their way of leadership,” he added.

Due to a packed cricketing schedule, Rohit didn’t captain India in the 3-0 ODI series win over the West Indies in Trinidad. In his absence, left-handed opener Shikhar Dhawan stepped up to do the leadership role and excelled in it.

Ganguly was impressed by Rohit and said he should be given some time being compared with the likes of MS Dhoni and Kohli.

“When you back someone let him captain, give him a bit of time to give results, and then see what happens,” he said.

Asked about FIFA’s ban on Indian football, Ganguly said, “I don’t deal with football so I won’t be able to answer that question. But I think every sports body has a system, every sports body has its rules and regulations. We at BCCI also have rules and protocols.”

Chip-maker MediaTek on Thursday announced a 4nm T830 platform for 5G fixed wireless access routers and mobile hotspots that supports 5G speeds up to 7Gbps on sub-6GHz networks.

Built with MediaTek’s M80 modem, the new chip can help consumers enjoy super-fast internet services from a small device that they can self-install, avoiding the hassles of lengthy installation times for fixed line broadband.

For device manufacturers, the T830’s highly integrated, compact design provides big power savings and reduces development time and costs, the company said in a statement.

“MediaTek is working with tier-1 operators around the world to bring fast, reliable connectivity to consumers and businesses,” said JC Hsu, CVP, and GM of MediaTek’s wireless communications business unit.

“This highly integrated platform represents the latest advancements in both 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity and enables our customers to build extremely high-performance multi-gigabit 5G CPE products in the smallest form factors possible,” he added.

The main system-on-chip (SoC) also has a built-in Network Processing Unit (NPU) and Wi-Fi offloads engine to support multi-gigabit routing speeds between 5G cellular to Ethernet or Wi-Fi, without CPU involvement thus offering speed and power-efficiency benefits.

Razorpay acquires offline payments firm Ezetap for up to $200 mn

Fintech services platform Razorpay on Thursday announced it has acquired offline payments services provider Ezetap, becoming one of the few companies globally with a significant online and offline presence in payments.

According to sources, the deal size is around $150-200 million. This marks Razorpay’s sixth and biggest acquisition to date.

The Ezetap Team of around 300 employees will join Razorpay and work as an independent business unit.

“We believe that the businesses of tomorrow will not distinguish between physical and digital channels and will expect a unified payment experience through a single integrated platform,” said Harshil Mathur, CEO, and Co-founder, of Razorpay.

Ezetap provides software for financial technologies, including point of sales (POS) solutions, billing, and loyalty solutions among others, enabling businesses to accept payments in-store and on-delivery.

It currently serves over 500,000 touchpoints, including Amazon and BigBasket, and works closely with banks like SBI, HDFC, ICICI, and Axis, among others, processing over $10 billion in annual transactions on its platform.

“We join Razorpay’s suite of products to collectively offer businesses the best-in-class omnichannel payments experience and are excited at the limitless possibilities that together both the companies are looking to explore in the omnichannel payment world,” said Byas Nambisan, CEO of Ezetap.

Prior to this, Razorpay acquired fintech startup IZealiant Technologies, Malaysia-based Curlec, TERA Finlabs, Open, and Third watch.

With an $80 billion total payment value (TPV) as of April, Razorpay is eyeing a 10-12 million merchant base by next year.

Late director K. Balachander’s Kavithalayaa Productions, which produced director Mani Ratnam’s blockbuster ‘Roja’, has recalled the words of K. Balachander when he introduced A.R. Rahman as a music director on the occasion of the film completing a glorious 30 years.

Taking to Twitter, Kavithalayaa Productions, on its timeline, posted two videos. The first video clip, which was a speech of the late director, was posted by the production house saying, “In his own inimitable style, KB sir expressed his appreciation for ‘Roja’ artistes and technicians on the occasion of the silver jubilee of the film. Today, we offer this as Kavithalayaa’s tribute to them.”

The second video, which was posted on Tuesday night by the production house, was one that had clips of a recent A. R. Rahman performance.

In the video, music director A. R. Rahman is seen on stage saying, “Thirty years of ‘Roja’. I want to thank the whole team of ‘Roja’. Mani Ratnam, K. Balachander, Vairamuthu, Minmini, S. P. B. Garu and all the singers.”

“I want to thank all of you and your parents, who have encouraged me. They’ve shown me, love. That’s why I am here. So, let’s celebrate ‘Roja’ 30.”

The video also had clips of actor Arvind Swamy and actress Madhubala, who played the lead in the film, talking about it.

Indian American rom-com No. 2 after ‘The Sandman’ on Netflix global Top 10

While the streaming fantasy drama ‘The Sandman’ was watched for 127.5 million hours, landing in the No. 1 position on the newly released Top 10 rankings of Netflix, Season 3 of the Mindy Kaling-created Indo-American teen comedy series ‘Never Have I Ever debuted at No. 2 during the August 8-14 viewing window.

‘Never Have I Ever was watched for 55 million hours after three days of availability, reports Variety. It was followed by the debut of another teen series’ third season: ‘Locke & Key,’ which was watched for 38.4 million hours in its first five days of availability.

According to Variety, the fourth place was secured by Season 4 of ‘Stranger Things,’ which was watched for 35.3 million hours. This was the season’s sixth full week of availability since the premiere of the two episodes making up Volume 2 on July 1.

Following ‘Stranger Things 4’ on heels is the fourth season of the romantic-drama series ‘Virgin River. With 29.6 million hours watched, the show lands at No. 5.

Variety further states that ‘Manifest’ also remains in the Top 10 after reappearing during the July 4-10 window due to its recent addition to Netflix in India, Latin America, and the Nordic countries. This week, the show’s third season came in at No. 6 (28.4 million hours).

The No. 7 position went to ‘I Just Killed My Dad,’ which was viewed for 26.2 million hours in its first six days of availability. Limited thriller series ‘Keep Breathing’ took eighth place with 20.9 million hours watched after debuting at No. 3 during the July 25-31 window and taking second place last week.

The 9th and 10th spots on the ranking board are occupied by ‘Manifest’ season 2 and ‘Manifest’ season 3 respectively.

‘Breaking of ice is taking place’, engaging with FIFA to lift AIFF suspension

The Centre on Wednesday told the Supreme Court that it is holding talks with FIFA officials, and breaking of ice could take place soon, as the government is making all efforts to lift the suspension of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), imposed by FIFA.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, submitted before a bench headed by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud that the government is taking up the issue of suspension of AIFF by FIFA, and two meetings have taken place with the FIFA officials.

“We have reached a particular stage, breaking of ice is taking place. Discussions are going on and everyone is on board in the discussion…some way is found out (the government is making all efforts),” said Mehta. Senior advocate Rahul Mehra submitted before the bench that former AIFF president Praful Patel should not be allowed to communicate with the FIFA officials.

Mehta assured the top court that only government officials and authorized persons are holding discussions with FIFA officials and trying to find a way forward to resolve the crisis.

Justice Chandrachud said, “Country should hold the tournament…it is a great tournament for under 17…” The bench added that efforts should be focused on resolving the issue (suspension of AIFF by FIFA).

The top court said the Central government should play a proactive role to resolve the matter to hold the tournament and also lifting of the suspension of AIFF is duly facilitated.

FIFA, the apex football body, has suspended AIFF with “immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties”, jeopardizing the country’s staging of the U-17 Women’s World Cup in October. The AIFF will not be able to play any international games until the ban is removed.

“The Bureau of the FIFA Council has unanimously decided to suspend the All India Football Federation (AIFF) with immediate effect due to undue influence from third parties, which constitutes a serious violation of the FIFA Statutes,” stated an official media release, issued by FIFA. The suspension will be lifted once an order to set up a committee of administrators to assume the powers of the AIFF Executive Committee has been repealed and the AIFF administration regains full control of the AIFF’s daily affairs, it said.

On August 3, the apex court passed directions for conducting elections for the AIFF executive committee ahead of the hosting of the U-17 women’s world cup by India. After this order, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) moved a contempt petition seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against former AIFF president Praful Patel and representatives of seven state associations accusing them of indirectly stalling the court-ordered elections to the AIFF.

On Tuesday night, Praggnanandhaa narrowly beat Anish Giri in the four-game match to avenge a costly defeat the Dutch number 1 inflicted on him earlier this year in the Oslo Esports Cup. Pragg and Giri played out three draws before India struck in the final game.

The youngster sits alongside Carlsen at the top of the leaderboard on 6/6 points. On Wednesday, Praggnanandhaa will play American teenager Hans Niemann, while Giri, still yet to get off the mark, will face French-registered Alireza Firouzja.

World champion Carlsen recovered from a shock loss against Niemann to march into Round 3 of the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour round-robin. Carlsen’s day started badly as he was blown away by Niemann, the lowest-rated player in the tournament.

Niemann, coming off a 3-0 loss on Monday, was super-smooth with the black pieces. The killer move was 35… Be4, which wreaked havoc in Carlsen’s defense and ended Niemann’s tilt.

In his post-game comment, Niemann summarised his win by simply saying: “Chess speaks for itself.” But Game 2 saw the world’s No.1 1 hit back in ruthless style to level the score at 1-1. Then in the third game, Carlsen sprung another opening surprise with the dubious 1. a3, played for the first time on the Tour, before moving into a more orthodox queen’s pawn opening. The Norwegian has previously played 1. e3 and 1. f3 all highly unorthodox moves.

Carlsen quickly went a pawn up and secured a beneficial queen trade before turning the screw against his 19-year-old opponent to take the win and go 2-1 up. Niemann now needed to win the next game on demand. He battled hard, but could not hold back the tide. Carlsen won the final game despite missing a chance to win a piece to take the match 3-1.

Carlsen said after: “I didn’t play so great, but I’m very happy with the fact I came back.”

Alireza Firouzja, the French-registered superstar-in-the-making, brushed off his loss on Monday to get his first campaign this season underway with a superb 2.5-0.5 win over Liem Le. Firouzja clinched victory with a game to spare, picking up USD7,500 and three points. Vietnam’s top player, meanwhile, has now lost two matches in a row.

The last match to finish, Jan-Krzysztof Duda vs Levon Aronian, became the first of the tournament to go to tiebreaks after a tight encounter between two of the Tour big beasts ended 2-2. Aronian missed an opportunity to take the lead in the first blitz tiebreak, which ended in a draw. But the Armenian-born US star made no mistake in the second to take the match win. He now sits one point behind Carlsen and Pragg on five points.

Round 3 of the round-robin event will be played later on Wednesday. Each match will be played over four rapid games, with blitz tiebreaks in case of a 2:2 draw.

Meta to ban political ads in final week for US midterm elections

Meta (formerly Facebook) has announced to disable new political, electoral, and social issue ads a week before the voting in the US midterm elections in November.

Ads that have previously run before the restriction period will be allowed to run during this time.

“To simplify the process from the last cycle, any edits related to creative, placement, targeting, and the optimization won’t be permitted,” Nick Clegg, President, Global Affairs, said in a statement.

The restriction period will lift the day after the election and “we have no plans to extend it,” he said late on Tuesday.

Meta said that hundreds of people across more than 40 teams are working on the midterms polls, and it spent approximately $5 billion globally on safety and security last year alone.

The company said it will not allow any posts or ads that misrepresent key details about the voting process, including the date, time, and methods of voting.

“We will reject ads encouraging people not to vote or calling into question the legitimacy of the upcoming election,” said Clegg.

The company said it is also investing in proactive threat detection and expanding its policies to help address coordinated harassment and threats of violence against election officials and poll workers.

State and local election officials continue to use Voting Alerts on Facebook to send the latest information about registering and voting to people in their communities.

“This year, we’re also showing election-related in-Feed notifications in a second language other than English if we think the second language may be better understood,” said Meta.

“While some of the challenges in 2020 were unique, we are once again prepared to respond to content discussing the integrity of the election by applying labels that connect people with reliable information,” Clegg noted.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk Wednesday announced on Twitter that he is buying British football club Manchester United.

Musk, however, did not disclose the sum he is paying for acquiring the legendary football team.

The club has the latest market cap of nearly $2.08 billion.

“I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome,” Musk posted in a tweet.

However, it was not immediately clear if Musk was just having fun or was serious about the acquisition.

The American Glazer family owns the club and purchased it for around 790 million pounds in 2005.

The announcement came as he was engaged in a political tweet thread.

“To be clear, I support the left half of the Republican Party and the right half of the Democratic Party!” he posted, before the US midterm elections in November.

Musk supporters have asked him to buy Manchester United rather than Twitter in the past.

Manchester United Football Club, commonly referred to as Man United, or simply United is based in the Old Trafford area of Greater Manchester, England.

The club competes in the Premier League, the top division in the English football league system.

Nicknamed the Red Devils, it was founded as Newton Heath LYR Football Club in 1878 but changed its name to Manchester United in 1902. The club moved from Newton Heath to its current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.

Manchester United has won a record 20 League titles, 12 FA Cups, five League Cups, and a record 21 FA Community Shields.
