Google adds AI language skills to Alphabet’s helper robots

0

Google’s parent company Alphabet is bringing together two of its most ambitious research projects robotics and AI language understanding to make a “helper robot” that can understand natural language commands.

According to The Verge, since 2019, Alphabet has been developing robots that can carry out simple tasks like fetching drinks and cleaning surfaces.

This Everyday Robots project is still in its infancy the robots are slow and hesitant but the bots have now been given an upgrade: improved language understanding courtesy of Google’s large language model (LLM) PaLM.

Most robots only respond to short and simple instructions, like “bring me a bottle of water”. But LLMs like GPT-3 and Google’s MuM can better parse the intent behind more oblique commands.

In Google’s example, you might tell one of the Everyday Robots prototypes, “I spilled my drink, can you help?” The robot filters this instruction through an internal list of possible actions and interprets it as “fetch me the sponge from the kitchen”.

Google has dubbed the resulting system PaLM-Sayan, the name capturing how the model combines the language understanding skills of LLMs (“Say”) with the “affordance grounding” of its robots.

Google said that by integrating PaLM-SayCan into its robots, the bots were able to plan correct responses to 101 user-instructions 84 percent of the time and successfully execute them 74 percent of the time.

0

The dream run of director Lokesh Kanakaraj’s action entertainer ‘Vikram’, featuring actors Kamal Haasan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Fahadh Faasil in the lead, continues, with the film now having completed 75 days in theatres.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, Raaj Kamal Films International, the production house of actor Kamal Haasan that produced the film, said, “Juggernaut of Indian cinema. #75DaysofVikram and counting!”

The film has already blazed its way into the record books, smashing all existing box-office records in Tamil Nadu.

It grossed Rs 155 crore in just 17 days in the state. Overall box office collections of the film crossed the Rs 400-crore mark in June itself. Now, the film still continues to have a strong run in theatres.

Interestingly, the dream run in theatres continues despite the film having been released on the OTT platform Disney + Hotstar on July 8.

‘Vikram’, which has been showered with praises from people, hasn’t just impressed Indian trade circles alone but has left even International markets awestruck as well.

Written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the Kamal Haasan-Vijay Sethupathi-Fahadh Faasil-Suriya-starrer had its worldwide theatrical release on June 3.

Zayn recollects One Direction days in new social media video

0

British singer Zayn Malik seems to be marinating in nostalgia at least that’s what his social media post suggests. Zayn, who was earlier a part of the English-Irish boy pop band ‘One Direction, shared a video on his Instagram on Tuesday.

The 30-second black-and-white video shows Zayn singing One Direction’s 2014 single ‘Night Changes’, reports Billboard’.

In the new video, Malik sings the second half of the chorus originally recorded by bandmate Harry Styles crooning, “Everything that you’ve ever dreamed of/ Disappearing when you wake up/ But there’s nothing to be afraid of/ Even when the night changes/ It will never change me and you.”

While Malik mostly avoids addressing his days in One Direction, this is actually the second time he’s revisited the band’s catalog on social media in the last three months.

According to ‘Billboard’, back in June, he posted a video of himself hitting the high notes from ‘You & I’, the fourth and final single from One Direction’s 2013 album Midnight Memories, with eagle-eyed fans noticing that former bandmate Louis Tomlinson liked the clip on Instagram.

Talking about ‘Night Changes’, the ballad was released as the second single from the group’s fourth studio album Four in November 2014 just four months ahead of Zayn Malik’s surprise departure from the boy band in March 2015.

It peaked at No. 31 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was a top 20 hit on the Pop Airplay chart. Malik is a co-writer on the song alongside all his One Direction bandmates, as well as Jamie Scott, Julian Bunetta, and John Ryan.

Idris Elba walks away from playing James Bond

0

Hollywood star Idris Elba is reported to have walked away from talks to be the next James Bond after being named favourite to replace Daniel Craig.

Elba is instead reportedly set to pursue “his own film franchise,” though has apparently suggested other suitable 007s to producer Barbara Broccoli, reports aceshowbiz.com.

A source told The Sun: “Fans and Barbara wanted Idris but he wants to create something for himself. However, he’s put forward names to play 007.

“He’s ‘informally’ in the decision-making process as he’s been in talks with producers for so long.”

Daniel, 54, quit after his fifth Bond outing in last year’s ‘No Time to Die’, with Barbara later saying Elba was in her plans to take over as the spy, hailing him “a magnificent actor”.

With Idris out of the running, Henry Cavill and Rege-Jean Page are the joint 4/1 bookies’ favourites. They are still front-runners despite a film insider earlier this month saying the new James Bond must be aged under 40 and taller than 5ft 10 inches.

A source told the Daily Star on August 8 that Eon Productions were after a “fresh faced” replacement for Daniel.

They added bringing in an actor in their “late 30s” will allow him to stay in the role for at least a decade or potentially three films.

The source also claimed filming on the next movie may start in winter 2023, but Craig’s successor will not be unveiled until next autumn at the earliest.

The Eon Productions under 40s casting “rule” meant bookies’ and fan favourites such as Idris, Henry and Rege-Jean, as well as 44-year-old Tom Hardy, would have been ruled out.

ARichard Madden, 36, and James Norton, 37, are now said to be in pole position, with the alleged 5ft 10 height requirement also ruling out Taron Egerton, 32, John Boyega, 30, and 35-year-old Kit Harington.

New Spotify Premium users to get 3 months of free service

0

Music streaming platform Spotify has started offering three free months of service for new Premium users.

The three-month offer is available for new individual and student subscribers, while new Spotify Duo and family subscribers can receive one free month.

The offer is not available to former Premium members, but the platform gives those who canceled before July 15 a chance to revamp their subscription at a steep discount, receiving their first three months for $9.99, reports The Verge.

The new offer is valid for users until Sunday, September 11. After the three-month trial is over, subscribers who took advantage of the deal will be charged a regular price for the subscription.

This latest deal could help Spotify continue to see a boost to its growing subscriber numbers as the company slows hiring amid concerns about the economy.

Recently, the platform introduced new individual buttons for Shuffle and Play for Premium users.

The company said that this new change will allow Premium users to choose the mode they prefer at the top of playlists and albums and listen to them the way they want to.

Snapchat also began introducing a redesign that helps separate podcasts and music.

Spain continues to fight severe forest fires

0

Firefighting teams in Spain have continued to battle a number of severe forest fires across the country.

A fire about 60 km north-east of Alicante has destroyed about 6,500 hectares of forest since August 13, according to the state TV station RTVE.

Around 1,200 people in the area of the town of Pego had to leave their homes as a precaution, reports the DPA news agency.

In the autonomous community of Valencia, there were two smaller-scale wildfires.

Another large forest fire raged around the town of Anon de Moncayo, west of the city of Zaragoza in Aragon. About 1,500 people had to leave their homes there at the weekend but many have now returned.

The fire is not yet under control and has so far destroyed about 6,000 hectares after previous estimates of 8,000.

In contrast, the situation has eased somewhat near Murcia in the south following a fire that RTVE said had been caused by a lightning strike.

The most devastating forest fire since the beginning of the year in Spain near Zamora, close to the border with Portugal, was brought under control over the weekend, according to the reports.

Since July 17, 31,500 hectares of forest and scrubland have been destroyed in the fire and two people have died.

A drought that has lasted for months, great heat, which experts attribute to climate change, and very dry air have combined to cause new fires to break out across the country. Several other southern European nations have seen similar fires.

The risk of forest fires remains “extremely high” in parts of the Spanish regions of Andalusia, Aragon, and Catalonia, the EU’s Copernicus forest fire information system warned on Twitter.

2022 is already the most devastating forest fire year for Spain since records began, with over 380 forest fires recorded.

In the EU overall, the total area burned this year is at a record level.

According to data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), nearly 660,000 hectares have burned as of August 13.

Records began being tallied in 2006 and the average area burned per year has been just under 190,000 hectares, with the previous high at just under 421,000 hectares.

The data shows more than 245,000 hectares have burned in Spain alone so far this year.

In France, the figure is 61,000 hectares and in Germany almost 4,300 hectares.

Afghan resistance group claims arrest of Taliban forces

0

An Afghan armed resistance group claimed to have arrested dozens of Taliban forces, as the Islamists celebrated their first year in power and others called it a “dark day”.

Five “Taliban occupiers” were killed and 40 captured in the Arezoo valley of Panjshir province, said the spokesman of the National Resistance Front (NRF), Sibghatullah Ahmadi, as he released pictures of alleged captives.

NRF is led by Ahmad Massoud, the son of famous anti-Soviet guerilla commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, and claims to be fighting for democratic values such as an equitable political representation of ethnic groups, protection of women’s rights, and fair elections.

The Taliban’s government is yet to comment on the claim.

However, Defence Minister Mullah Yaqoob Mujahid said on Monday that their forces will suppress rebel groups under all circumstances.

To mark the first anniversary of the fall of Kabul, Taliban members paraded in the city with US military equipment and their leaders spoke at a televised gathering.

At the event, the Taliban’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi called on the world to cooperate with their government.

On social media, many Afghans spoke of their ordeal and called it a “dark day” for the nation.

In a statement, the UN diplomatic mission in the country said “without change, things can worsen”.

Karnataka Congress’ ‘mega’ Freedom March sends ‘strong’ message to BJP

0

Over one lakh people participated in the “mega” Freedom March organized by the Karnataka unit of the Congress party to celebrate 75 years of India’s Independence here.

The 7-km-long march began here from Sangolli Rayanna Circle at 2 p.m. on Monday and culminated at National College Grounds in almost 4 hours.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President D.K. Shivakumar and Opposition leader Siddaramaiah put up a united show yet again in public, sending out a “strong” message to the ruling BJP.

Shivakumar insisted that the Congress party fought for the independence of a pluralistic, secular, and sovereign India where every section of the society gets its due share.

“We feel proud while hoisting our Tricolor, the national flag. The Congress party leaders and our forefathers Dadabhai Narojii, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and Subhash Chandra Bose fought for an egalitarian India, a socialist country where every community gets its due. These freedom fighters would have never appreciated the divisions being created today in the name of religion,” Shivakumar said.

“The BJP targets the Nehru-Gandhi family as the saffron party has no history of participation in the freedom struggle and they are jealous of the Congress and the Gandhi family because of their legacy,” he asserted.

“We never forgot the struggle of Kittur Rani Chennamma and Surapur Nayaka Venkatappa Bahala,” Shivakumar said asserting that the Congress party is working hard to ensure social justice in the country and that everyone stays informed about the Kannada freedom fighters.

He also said that it was B.R. Ambedkar who ensured that every Indian is treated equally while drafting the Constitution of India.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also said that the people must remember that India got freedom after a lot of bloodsheds when thousands of people sacrificed their lives for the cause.

“We must remember our history, the sacrifices of our freedom fighters who laid down their lives so that their future generations could venture into a free country. We should never forget or disrespect them. Anyone discriminating against these freedom fighters is doing injustice which is not right,” Siddaramaiah said.

Popular singer Hariharan participated in the cultural event that was held at the National College ground where the Freedom March got concluded.

Kannadigas from all over the state participated in the march in huge numbers. More than 1 lakh people had registered themselves online for participating in the Congress party’s event.

Adopting a sensitive approach while organizing the event, the Congress party had bought 30,000 bulk metro tickets to provide free commuting to the participants “so that there would be no traffic congestion in the capital city because of the event”.

People from all walks of life including women, children, and senior citizens participated in the march showing their solidarity with the cause and cherishing the hard-earned Independence the country got after a lot of sacrifices.

Top Congress leadership including AICC General Secretary in charge for Karnataka Randeep Surjewala, former Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara, Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Legislative Council B.K. Hariprasad and KPCC Campaign Committee Chairman M.B. Patil were also present at the occasion.

Pak to attend counter-terror drills in India for 1st time

0

Pakistan has confirmed that it will attend the international counter-terrorism exercises in India later this year despite simmering tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

The counter-terrorism exercises are scheduled to be held in October in Manesar, Haryana, under the banner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), The Express Tribune reported.

Pakistan and India are part of the regional body that also includes China, Russia, and Central Asian Republics (CARs).

While Pakistan and Indian military contingents have taken part in counter-terrorism exercises together, this will be the first time that Pakistan will be attending such drills in India, The Express Tribune reported.

At the weekly briefing, Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Asim Iftikhar confirmed Pakistan’s participation.

“Yes, there will be exercises under the ambit of SCO RATS (Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure),” the spokesperson said, adding that India was chairing the SCO RATS this year.

“These exercises are scheduled to be held in India in Manesar in October, and as Pakistan is a member, we will participate,” he confirmed.

“At what level, I think when we approach that, we will let you know,” the spokesperson added.

The move will be seen as significant given the deepening tensions between the two countries.

Pakistan downgraded its relationship with India after New Delhi revoked the special status of the illegally occupied Kashmir region in August 2019.

Since then, there has been no structured dialogue between the two sides though backchannel talks did produce a renewal of ceasefire understanding in February last year.

The truce is still holding but there is no progress or indication of any thaw in the relationship. In fact, backchannel talks have met a dead end with both sides sticking to their respective positions, The Express Tribune reported.

There was renewed optimism for a possible breakthrough when there was a change of government in April in Pakistan. There were quick exchanges between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi, but things could not move further.

The two leaders will have at least two opportunities in the coming weeks for possible interactions. Both Modi and Shehbaz will be first attending the SCO summit in Samarkand and then the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session.

“The SCO meeting is in Samarkand in mid-September; there is nothing with me about the meeting you are referring to,” the FO spokesperson said when asked to comment on the possibility of a Modi-Shehbaz meeting.
