Musk says Twitter must follow law of the land in India

0

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has claimed that Twitter does not follow the law of the land in India and this has jeopardized one of its largest markets.

In a countersuit against the micro-blogging platform filed in a Delaware court in the US late on Friday, Musk said he was “hoodwinked” into signing the $44 billion Twitter takeover deal.

“In July, Twitter sued the Indian government to challenge orders requiring it to remove content and block dozens of accounts,” tweeted New York Times reporter Kate Conger.

“Musk takes issue with that, saying it jeopardizes one of Twitter’s largest markets and suggesting Twitter should follow local law in India,” Conger added.

Twitter last moved the Karnataka High Court against the Indian government’s order to take down some content on its platform, on the grounds that the content blocking orders from the IT Ministry does not pass “the test of the grounds provided under Section 69A of the IT Act”.

Twitter alleged in its writ petition that multiple accounts and content included in the blocking orders are either “overbroad and arbitrary”, fail to provide notice to the “originators” of the content, and are “disproportionate” in several cases.

The Musk countersuit said that “in 2021, India’s information technology ministry imposed certain rules allowing the government to probe social media posts, demand identifying information, and prosecute companies that refused to comply”.

Musk said the micro-blogging platform should honor the “laws of countries in which Twitter operates”.

Twitter responded to Musk’s allegations, saying it “respectfully refers to the Court for their complete and accurate contents”, and denied his claims.

Musk said that Twitter “did not apprise him of its lawsuit against the Indian government”, thereby putting the company’s third largest market “at risk”.

Twitter responded, saying its actions in India are in line with its “global practice” of challenging government requests or laws.

Twitter has dragged Musk’s billionaire friends along with Tesla into the legal battle that will start on October 17.

Twitter argues that Musk signed a contract to buy the company, and is using spam accounts as a false pretense to cancel the deal.

Meta brings its latest AI chatbot on web

0

Meta’s AI research labs have reportedly created a new state-of-the-art chatbot and the tech giant is letting members of the public talk to the system to collect feedback on its capabilities.

According to The Verge, the bot is called BlenderBot 3 and can be accessed on the web. Though, right now, it seems only residents in the US can do so.

“We are committed to publicly releasing all the data we collect in the demo in the hopes that we can improve conversational AI,” Kurt Shuster, a research engineer at Meta who helped create BlenderBot 3, was quoted as saying.

BlenderBot 3 is able to engage in general chitchat, said Meta, but also answer the sort of queries you might ask a digital assistant, “from talking about healthy food recipes to finding child-friendly amenities in the city”, the report said.

The bot is a prototype and built on Meta’s previous work with what are known as large language models or LLMS powerful but flawed text-generation software of which OpenAI’s GPT-3 is the most widely known example.

Like all LLMs, BlenderBot is initially trained on vast text datasets, which it mines for statistical patterns to generate language.

Such systems have proved extremely flexible and have been put to a range of uses, from generating code for programmers to helping authors write their next bestseller.

However, these models also have serious flaws: they regurgitate biases in their training data and often invent answers to users’ questions (a big problem if they are going to be useful as digital assistants).

Rohit Sharma, Rahul Dravid have a big responsibility for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup: Parthiv Patel

0

Former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel feels there is a huge responsibility on captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid to get the right combination ahead of the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in October-November.

Since winning the inaugural title in South Africa in 2007, India is yet to win another silverware in the shortest format of the game. In the last edition of the showpiece event in the UAE in 2021, India made an early exit from the Super 10 stage.

Expectations are high from India to do well in the upcoming tournament under a new captain and coach, where they have embraced an attacking approach with the bat.

“The selection of the right team will determine the result for India. Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid have a big responsibility to come up with the best combination for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup,” said Patel in an audio chatroom session of ‘CricChat Powered by Parimatch’ on the Sharechat app.

Patel, who played 25 Tests, 38 ODIs, and two T20Is for India, remarked that reigning champions Australia, who would be defending the title on home soil, can give some strong competition to India.

“Australia could give a tough competition to India since the team seems strong. Even England and South Africa have improved their games as compared to the last World Cup, but Australia looks like a much stronger contender.”

Asked about the frequent change in the opening pair for the Indian team in the past few games, where Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant have been tried too, Patel said, “There is no doubt that the team is in an experimental phase due to fitness issues that the players are facing.”

Patel, who won IPL 2015 and 2017 with Mumbai Indians and was named as their talent scout a day after retiring from all forms of the game, named young left-handed batter Tilak Varma as his favorite young talent in Indian cricket.

“One uncapped player that has me excited is Tilak Verma. He batted really well in the Tata IPL 2022, even when his team was not in the best condition.”

Talking about his career in the Indian team, which started as a 17-year-old, Parthiv recalled how former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly had the best man-management skills and were good at calming everyone.

“If our day wasn’t going too well, or the game did not go well, he used to make everyone feel good. He always used to carry Marigold biscuits along with him and handed them out to everybody.”

Samsung to supply 5G solutions, equipment to Bharti Airtel

0

Samsung Electronics will provide 5G solutions and equipment to Indian telecommunications company Bharti Airtel, marking the South Korean tech giant’s first 5G equipment deal from India as the country plans to roll out 5G services after a successful spectrum auction.

Airtel, the world’s fourth-largest communications solutions provider by users, is set to roll out a 5G network in India in August, in partnership with Samsung.

Swedish Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia have also been selected as 5G partners.

Samsung said the deal includes building 5G radio stations and offering maintenance and other services. The value of the deal was not disclosed.

“5G will have a powerful impact on India’s consumers and businesses taking mobile experiences to a new level, introducing a gamut of enhanced capabilities and expanding what is possible,” Cheun Kyung-who on, president and head of the networks business at Samsung Electronics, said in a statement.

“As a global leader in 5G, Samsung is excited to embark on this 5G journey with Airtel to deliver innovative solutions that will help advance India’s entrepreneurial spirit and open up a new paradigm for the country.”

India is a massive market with approximately 1.1 billion users of wireless communications services. Samsung built India’s first 4G LTE network in 2016.

“We are delighted to announce that Airtel will commence roll out of 5G services in August. Our network agreements are finalized and Airtel will work with the best technology partners from across the world to deliver the full benefits of 5G connectivity to our consumers,” Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal said in a statement.

Bhagyashree gets reminded of Salman from ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ on reality show

0

Veteran actress Bhagyashree went down memory lane and remembered her ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ days on the sets of the reality show ‘DID Super Moms’.

The performance by contestants Anila and Shweta on the title track of ‘Dangal’ left everyone stunned. In fact, the act somehow even reminded Bhagyashree of her co-star Salman Khan and made her reminisce about her shoot days with the Bollywood Superstar.

As Bhagyashree mentions, “I believe the concept that you depicted today is an issue that various women in our country go through every now and then. Women are generally told to take care of just their household chores after marriage and they are not encouraged to follow their dreams. But women like you prove that one can achieve anything one wants, with their hard work and determination. Anila, I must add that whenever I watch your performance, I always wonder how you do it. You must teach this to me!”

She added: “I noticed one more thing in your performance today, that you flawlessly imitated Salman Khan in the act.”

Released in 1989, ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ is a romantic musical film directed by Sooraj Barjatya. ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ is considered one of the most iconic romantic films ever made and became a cult favorite of its songs, dialogues, and chemistry of Salman and Bhagyashree.

She added: “In fact, there was one jump that I found really interesting because that move was exactly like the scene from our film ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’, where Salman is exercising, and with him being upset with me during the sequence, he jumps right back up.”

“You did a similar move and that one movement reminded me of that scene from the film and made me nostalgic.”

‘Darlings’ stars Alia, Shefali Shah, Vijay Verma, and Roshan Mathew. Jasmeet still remembers how it all began with just a narration.

‘Darlings’ is a dark comedy that explores the lives of a mother-daughter duo trying to find their place in Mumbai seeking courage and love in exceptional circumstances while fighting against all odds.

Jasmine said: “Alia is a director’s actor. She is true to the film, and the character, nothing else matters. My working relationship with Alia evolved as we progressed.”

When asked if she preferred Alia as an actor or producer, Jasmeet said: “Both. Alia the actor always, I have to say, Alia has the quality of encouraging and empowering a director’s vision. That, to me, makes a fabulous producer.”

Miss Universe Harnaaz Sandhu was bullied online after gaining weight

0

Miss Universe 2021 Harnaaz Sandhu has revealed that she gained weight since being crowned in December, but she doesn’t mind the change. However, it was the online bullying that got to her and she “broke down” so many times.

“Physically I have kind of grown, got more pounds, and increased my weight, which I am totally comfortable about right now,” the Indian-born beauty queen told People.

The 22-year-old added: “I was bullied for gaining weight. It was kind of uncomfortable and really surprising for me to see how people started having their opinions, which should not really matter.”

“It’s not about how you look, it’s about who you are from inside and how you treat people and what you believe in.”

She says that leading up to the competition, diet, and exercise was all about winning.

“I was really focused towards my goal and I was (not) thinking about my health,” Sandhu said.

“The whole time we were working out, doing so many activities, and just after winning, I had almost a month just to relax.”

“During that time, I actually didn’t work out, and I was just eating and just enjoying that time with my family,” the former Miss Universe says.

“I never realized that it would start showing on my body.”

Some of the online comments were very cruel.

“I definitely broke down so many times,” Sandhu admits. “Sometimes in the most unexpected times. I’m just about to go on stage or something and this whole thing comes to my mind. It’s really sad.”

Sandhu gained weight but also didn’t feel well, and a doctor diagnosed her with allergies she never knew she had.

“I have a gluten allergy,” Sandhu shares.

“I can’t have wheat or anything which contains wheat. Apart from that, I also have some soy allergy (and) coconut allergies.”

“I’m allergic to eggs and I kind of realized that when I came to New York,” the model and actress says.

“Because (eggs are considered) vegetarian and it’s known as non-vegetarian in India. It took me time to realize that the things which I was allergic to, I was still having. I didn’t know.”

Now that the 70th Miss Universe title holder has gotten a grasp on her health, her mindset has shifted.

“I’ve gone through that phase of my life where I used to feel bad about everything,” Sandhu says. “Now, I started loving everything. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to feel sad.”

Sandhu hopes sharing her story will help others who struggle with body image and self-love.

“We all are imperfect,” she says.

“We need to realize that there’s a point where we understand that we need to embrace our flaws and when you do that, you can conquer anything in this world.”

‘Supergirl’ movie reportedly scrapped too after ‘Batgirl’

0

Another DC superhero movie appears to be canceled amid Warner Bros.’ cost-savings push. After ‘Batgirl’ was scrapped, a ‘Supergirl’ movie is said to be likely not moving forward as well.

In an article by Rolling Stone explaining Warner Bros.’ decision to scrap ‘Batgirl’, the site reported: “Now, the prospect of other DC films being squashed looms.”

According to the news outlet, “Insiders say ‘Supergirl’, which is in development, is not likely to move forward,” reports aceshowbiz.com.

It’s unclear if the studio wants to back out of its commitment with the ‘Supergirl’ movie as part of its change, but the report mentioned that “Warner Bros. also finds itself in another difficult position with the upcoming movie ‘The Flash’ ” amid star Ezra Miller’s erratic behavior.

‘The Flash’ is supposed to kick off an all-new DC Universe, introducing Sasha Calle as Supergirl, the cousin of Superman. From there, the female superhero is expected to spin off of the Miller-led tentpole.

Red hot lava continues to flow from Iceland volcano after eruption

0

Glowing red hot lava continued to flow on Thursday after a volcanic eruption on Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula, about 30 km southwest of the capital Reykjavik.

Live images broadcast on Icelandic television showed molten lava coming from a fissure several hundred meters long in the rugged landscape, reports the DPA news agency.

White smoke rose continuously from the molten rock.

According to initial measurements, the eruption was much more powerful in the early hours than at the beginning of a similar one in 2021.

A series of earthquakes that heralded the eruption also continued.

On Thursday morning, a quake with a magnitude of 4.6 was measured on the peninsula, according to data from the Icelandic Meteorological Authority.

The number of tremors, however, has decreased noticeably since the eruption, according to the authority.

The eruption started on Wednesday afternoon near the mountain Fagradalsfjall. Scientists expected one due to earthquakes and associated underground magma movements.

There is no major danger to people or the surrounding area, according to findings so far.

It is still unclear how long the eruption will last.

An eruption on the same peninsula last year saw lava fountains shooting upwards for months. The natural spectacle attracted countless volcanologists, hikers, and travelers.

This time, too, curious onlookers have made their way to the eruption site.

Cambodia’s famed Angkor receives 83,854 foreign visitors in 7 months

0

Cambodia’s famed Angkor Archeological Park attracted 83,854 foreign tourists in the first seven months of 2022, up 13.5 times compared to the same period last year, an official statement said on Thursday.

The ancient site made $3.37 million in revenue from ticket sales during the January-July period this year, also up 13 folds year-on-year, said the state-owned Angkor Enterprise’s statement.

In July alone, Angkor welcomed 23,871 foreigners, up 52 times compared to the same month last year, reports Xinhua news agency.

Located in the northwest Siem Reap province, the 401-square-km Angkor Archeological Park, inscribed on the World Heritage List of the Unesco in 1992, is the most popular tourist destination in the Southeast Asian country.

Tourism Minister Thong Khon said on Monday that foreigners, who come to live and work in Cambodia for two years or longer, will be allowed to visit the Angkor free of charge, saying that the move was to encourage more tourists to the site.

He said foreign tourists buying a one-day entrance ticket can visit Angkor for two days, while the three-day pass will be increased to five days of visit and the seven-day pass to 10 days of the visit.

The entrance fee for a one-day visit to the site is $37, a three-day visit costs $62, and a week-long visit costs $72.

Long Kosal, deputy director-general of the Apsara National Authority, said Angkor is predicted to attract more tourists in the coming months and years as the Covid-19 pandemic has waned.

“As our country has reopened its borders to all travellers without quarantine, I believe that more international tourists will spend their holidays at Angkor in the near future,” he told Xinhua.

During the pre-pandemic era, Angkor received up to 2.2 million international visitors in 2019, generating $99 million in revenue from ticket sales, according to Angkor Enterprise.

In just 16 hours, Karthi’s ‘Viruman’ trailer gets 3.6 mn views!

0

The trailer of director Muthiah’s eagerly awaited explosive action entertainer ‘Viruman’, featuring actors Karthi and Aditi Shankar in the lead, has garnered a whopping 3.6 million views on YouTube in less than 16 hours of being released.

The trailer, which was released at a grand event in Madurai on Wednesday night, shows that this film too, like Muthiah’s earlier film, ‘Komban’, will be a rustic, action-packed entertainer.

The trailer gives away the fact that Viruman (played by Karthi) is the fourth son of Prakash Raj, a Tehsildar, and that relations between the father and son are strained to the extent that the father calls his own son, a Narakasuran, while the son rewards a man who slaps his dad with a gold ring.

Interestingly, Muthiah seems to have realized from making ‘Komban’ that Karthi and Raj Kiran complement each other well and has looked to reproduce the same charm in this film as well.

Aditi Shankar, the daughter of ace Shankar, looks absolutely at ease, giving no clue whatsoever that this is her debut film.

The hard-hitting trailer has raised expectations for the film which hits the screens on August 12.

When The Great Khali trained TV actor Danish Akhtar Saifi

0

Actor Danish Akhtar Saifi, who is known for playing Nandi in ‘Baal Shiv’, took formal wrestling training from The Great Khali.

Danish speaks about his journey from a wrestler to an actor and says: “I hail from Bihar, where wrestling is enjoyed by many. And in a similar vein, I used to be fascinated by wrestling. I was young when I decided to be a wrestler and it was my father whom I told for the first time. He motivated me for it. He made me go through years of intense training and a strict regimen, which greatly helped me get that kind of fitness and energy in my body.”

“I admired WWE a lot and wanted to become an international wrestler. Since facilities were not available in my city to learn wrestling, I went to Jalandhar and started training.”

The ‘Siya Ke Ram’ actor reveals the beginning of his career as an actor.

He says: “In 2010, I went to the National School of Bodybuilding, Jalandhar and took a six-month training which helped to gain a wrestler’s body and then moved to Delhi and initially started working as a gym trainer. While in Jalandhar, I connected with The Great Khali’s brother. So, one day he called me and said, ‘selectors are coming from WWE, and I think you are fit for it. Can you come back to Jalandhar for it?’ I decided to go back in no time.”

“Khali Sir had personally trained me for six months before the election in his academy CWE (Continental Wrestling Entertainment). I remember around four to five thousand people had come for the selection, out of which only five or six were shortlisted, and I was one of them. But due to some paperwork, I could not fly to America then. After that, I came to Mumbai, and my acting career began.”

Danish shares how he got his first break and says: “For a mythological show, auditions were happening; the makers were looking for someone tall, extremely strong, and muscular, with a clean image. A casting friend of mine suggested, ‘I should go for the audition’, and in the very first audition, I got selected for Hanuman’s role.”

“I never thought that I would end up in this field. It was Director Nikhil Sinha’s vision that convinced me to try out for this role. I had to work a lot on my acting skills, and for almost three months, I studied the character to portray it in the desired way.”

On his inclination towards doing mythological shows, he says: “I have portrayed Hanuman on two occasions, Bheem in a Kannada movie and now Nandi in ‘Baal Shiv’. I am incredibly grateful for it. I have received accolades from the audience for every mythological role I have ever played. And I believe their support and acceptance persuades the makers to choose me for such characters, and they continue to offer me similar roles.”

“However, I would also like to give some credit to my physical appearance, which probably makes them think of me for such devotional characteristics. And to be honest, I will do any mythological show that comes my way,” he concludes.
