Taiwan begins live-fire artillery exercise amid China manoeuvres

0

Taiwan on Tuesday began scheduled live-fire artillery exercises amid China’s ongoing military manoeuvres around the island.

The live ammunition artillery exercise known as the Tien Lei drill was announced in late July and was designed to simulate Taiwan’s defence against an attack by China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA), reports the DPA news agency.

It is taking place on Tuesday and Thursday this week and was planned as part of Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang exercises, but comes amid heightened tensions and just after China said it would extend large-scale air and sea drills to the north, south-west and east of Taiwan that had been due to end on Sunday.

No new formal end date has been announced.

Taiwanese television reported on Tuesday that flares were fired in coastal areas during the military exercise in Pingtung county in the island’s south, near a zone previously designated by the Chinese army for its drill.

The Foreign Ministry in Taipei has condemned China’s extension of its manoeuvres near Taiwan.

“China’s real intention behind these military exercises is to alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait and the entire region,” Foreign Minister Joseph Wu told a news conference.

Wu said China’s large-scale military exercises, missile launches and cyberattacks were all part of Beijing’s “military playbook to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan”.

He said they were strategies to “weaken public morale” on the island.

China launched the military manoeuvres on August 2 in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

Since its launch, the Chinese military practised not only a naval and air blockade but also amphibious landing capabilities to launch beach assaults on Taiwan, according to Chinese media.

Taiwan’s military said Chinese aircraft flew 66 sorties on Sunday alone. In the process, 22 jets crossed the Taiwan Strait median line, a demarcation that had mostly been respected in the past.

Fourteen Chinese warships were said to have participated, as well.

A Chinese drone was also spotted again on Sunday evening over the outlying Taiwanese island of Kinmen, which is only a few kilometres from the Chinese coast.

Tight security in Lucknow for Muharram

0

Security was beefed up in Lucknow on Tuesday for Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, with over 3,500 police personnel, mobile patrolling squads, Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC), and Rapid Action Force (RAF) teams posted in sensitive areas of the state capital along with the deployment of drones.

According to an official state government spokesman, a special social media surveillance cell has been formed to counter rumor-mongering.

S. Chinappa, Lucknow Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), West, said: “We have divided the entire city into five zones and 18 sectors for sensitive areas in an effective manner.”

Another senior police official said over 2,500 non-gazetted police personnel from inspector to constable ranks are deployed only in the Old City.

“Other than civil police officers and personnel, PAC and RAF have been deployed to avert any trouble in the area,” he said.

The official added that CCTV cameras have been installed along different routes, while some police personnel will be equipped with bodycams to keep watch on every activity during the procession.

Besides, drones will keep an aerial vigil on the entire area and motorcycle mobile units will patrol the entire Old City to ensure peace during Muharram, he added.

The official said religious leaders of both communities and other influential people have been asked to remain connected with senior authorities in case of any rumor-mongering and trouble.

He said the administration will keep sharing every development during this period so that people are not misled by rumor mongers.

Truce between Israel, Palestinian militants holds; Gaza crossings reopen

0

An Egypt-brokered ceasefire to halt a flare-up in fighting by Israel and Palestinian militants was held on Monday, with crossings into the besieged Gaza Strip also reopening.

An Israeli army spokesperson said no new rockets had been fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip since the ceasefire to end three days of violence that Palestinians said left more than 40 dead took effect late Sunday, reports DPA news agency.

The Israeli army had not attacked any new targets in the coastal enclave, the spokesperson added.

Israel on Monday also announced the re-opening of border crossings into the Mediterranean coastal strip for humanitarian deliveries.

The Israeli military launched the “Breaking Dawn” military operation on August 5 with airstrikes against Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.

Two military chiefs were killed during the operation.

The group, closely linked to Iran, is classified as a terrorist organization by the US and European Union.

Israel Defense Forces said the group had been planning a major attack along the border involving anti-tank missiles and so pre-emptive action was taken by launching a wave of strikes against Islamic Jihad positions in Gaza.

Tensions began to rise with the arrest of an Islamic Jihad leader in the West Bank, Bassem Saadi, on August 1.

Since August 5, Palestinian militants have fired more than 1,000 rockets at Israeli settlements, according to the Israeli military, with some 200 hundred of them falling short and hitting the Gaza Strip.

In Gaza, 44 people have been killed and 360 injured, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

Among the dead were said to be 15 children and four women.

The Palestinians blamed the Israeli strikes. Israel said misguided jihadi rockets had caused the civilian casualties.

There have been no reported deaths in Israel, with the Iron Dome defense system intercepting most of the rockets.

After assessing the security situation, the Erez border crossing and the Kerem Shalom goods crossing were open again, Israel’s Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) announced Monday.

The first fuel tanks and humanitarian supplies passed through the border in the morning, according to a spokesperson.

The power supply in Gaza had been reduced from 12 to four hours on August 6 due to a lack of fuel. The Palestinian Health Ministry had warned of major impacts on medical services.

Around 2 million people live in very poor conditions in the territory of the Mediterranean Sea.

Hamas seized power in 2007, prompting Israel to tighten a blockade of Gaza, a move that is also supported by neighboring Egypt.

Both Israel and Egypt justify the measure with security interests.

Meta shuts down its biggest VR game for Quest 1 owners

0

Meta is shutting down Quest 1 virtual reality (VR) headset support for ‘Population: One, its popular battle-royale game set in VR.

Quest 1 owners will no longer be able to launch or play the game starting October 31, its developer BigBox VR has announced.

Quest 1 players can still play the game if they have a VR-ready personal computer.

“We are building ‘BIG POP1′ experiences that will push the boundaries of multiplayer VR. In order to focus our efforts on next-gen features and tech, we’re ending Quest 1 support on October 31, 2022,” the company said in an update.

Account progress, in-app purchases (IAP), and crossplay for Population: One are still available on supported devices, including Meta Quest 2, Oculus Rift S, and Oculus Rift.

Amid the increased production costs and global chip shortage, tech giant Meta is also increasing the price of its Quest 2 virtual reality (VR) headsets, starting this month.

The company said that from August, Meta Quest 2 will cost $399.99 and $499.99 for the 128GB and 256GB versions, respectively.

Recently, Meta announced a new setting known as Voice Mode in Horizon Worlds that gives users more control over their experience.

The feature allows the Quest 2 VR headset users to choose how they hear people who are not on the friends’ list, including the option not to hear unwanted conversations at all.

0

Actor Vijay Sethupathi has won the Best Actor Award at the Indo-French International Film Festival for his performance in director Seenu Ramasamy’s critically acclaimed Tamil entertainer, ‘Maamanithan’.

The film has also won the award for Best Picture.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, director Seenu Ramasamy said, “Congratulations Vijay Sethupathi for Best Actor and Yuvan Shankar Raja for Best Picture. Thank you Indo-French International Film Festival.”

Interestingly, the film, which had garnered huge praise from various quarters soon after its release, had ace director Shankar calling it a ‘realistic classic’. Shankar had even said that Vijay Sethupathi’s brilliant performance in the film deserved a National Award.

Only a week ago, the film won a Gold medal at the Tokyo Film Awards this year.

‘Maamanithan’ won the gold in the Best Asian Film category, while Takahiro Kawabe’s ‘Love Song at 5 pm’ won the silver, and Mart Bira’s ‘Nomadic Doctor’ took the bronze at the Tokyo Film Awards.

The story of ‘Maamanithan’ is about a simple man who longs to provide good education to his children by getting them admitted to a private school. To increase his income, he enters into a deal with a real estate developer and in the process gets conned. The problems he faces are what the film is all about.

0

Hollywood actor Jesse Ventura, who starred alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original 1987 ‘Predator movie, has praised the franchise’s latest entry ‘Prey’. He called the prequel a “wonderful film”.

“Great, great film,” Ventura wrote in a Twitter post as he highlighted the performance by American actress Amber Midthunder, reports Variety.

When a dreadlocked alien makes contact and begins killing for sport, Naru must team with her brother (played by Dakota Beavers) to take down the enemy.

The England men’s team of Jona Efoloko, Zharnel Hughes, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake, and Ojie Edoburun claimed the victory comfortably in 38.85 seconds, 0.35 seconds ahead of second-placed Trinidad and Tobago. Nigeria finished third in 38.81 seconds.

In the women’s 4x100m final, Nigeria broke the African record to win the gold in 42.10 seconds while England finished behind in 42.41 seconds. Jamaica took the bronze medal in 43.08 seconds.

Olympic silver medallist Laura Muir finished the women’s 1,500m race first in 4:02.75, adding gold for Scotland.

“It is so nice to come here and not just get one medal but two and in such a competitive field,” said the 29-year-old Muir, who also won a bronze medal in the 800m event on Saturday.

“I just thought my strength is in my kick and I just tried to trust it and hope nobody would catch me,” Muir said. “I ran as hard as I could to the line.”

Besides, England beat Australia 2-1 to win women’s hockey at the Commonwealth Games for the first time.

CWG 2022, Cricket: India clinch silver medal after losing to Australia by nine runs (Ld)

0

A captain’s knock from Harmanpreet Kaur and some terrific bowling, as well as fielding performance, wasn’t enough for India to get the gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games at Edgbaston on Sunday. Harmanpreet made 65 off 43 balls and also shared a 96-run stand for the third wicket with Jemimah Rodrigues.

But the inability of recovering from losing a flurry of wickets taken by Ashleigh Gardner and Megan Schutt meant India clinched the silver medal in their maiden outing in the multi-nation games, losing by nine runs, the exact same margin by which they had lost the 2017 ODI World Cup final to England at Lord’s.

Shafali Verma began by smashing Megan Schutt for a brace of boundaries in the 12-run opening over. But in the next over, Smriti Mandhana’s shuffle caused her downfall as Darcie Brown uprooted her leg-stump. Shafali was then dropped at cover off Ashleigh Gardner at the start of the third over. But on the fourth ball, she miscued again and was caught at mid-on.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur took time to settle in before taking three boundaries off Darcie in the final over of the powerplay. While Jemimah made room to slice over cover-point, Harmanpreet pulled over mid-wicket and creamed a drive down on one knee to pierce through the cover.

Jemimah continued to impress with her glorious off-side drives while Harmanpreet paddled for four and smoked a six down the ground to keep India afloat in the chase. Harmanpreet’s fascination for leg-side boundaries continued as she swung, swiped, and reached her fifty in 34 balls with a flick through mid-wicket.

Post reaching her fifty, Harmanpreet smashed Alana for two more boundaries through the leg-side. Jemimah upped the ante with a slog off Megan, but the pacer had the last laugh on the third ball as she uprooted the right-hander’s leg-stump.

India was plunged into deep trouble in the 16th over as Pooja Vastrakar holed out to deep mid-wicket off Ashleigh and Harmanpreet fell immediately as the edge of a premeditated scoop was caught by Alyssa Healy diving to her right. From there, despite coming neck and neck, India couldn’t get over the line, leaving Harmanpreet & Co heartbroken, yet again as they lost their last eight wickets for 34 runs.

Earlier, a terrific fightback from India’s bowlers in the last five overs meant Australia finished at 161-8. Apart from the 74-run stand between Beth and captain Meg Lanning, Australia wasn’t allowed to break free as India conceded only 36 runs in the last five overs, taking five scalps.

India was splendid in their fielding, making tight stops, taking brilliant catches, and effecting terrific run-outs. With the ball, Renuka Thakur and Sneh Rana took two wickets each while Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav had a wicket apiece.

Renuka and Meghna Singh built pressure on Australia as nine runs came off the first two overs, with an edgy four for Alyssa. That worked wonders for India as a last-moment review showed Alyssa was trapped lbw by an inswinger from Renuka while going for a swipe across the line in the third over.

Beth got going with boundaries through drive and flick while Meg nailed a drive-through off-side and then hit an effortless six over long-off as Australia reached 39-1 in power-play. Beth and Meg continued to rotate the strike and hit occasional boundaries before the duo took 17 runs off Harmanpreet’s first over, with the Australia skipper hitting three-fours off her Indian counterpart.

But her promising knock was cut short by Radha flicking a sharp underarm throw to the non-striker’s end on Beth pushing back the ball to the bowler, catching Meg inches short of her crease. Tahlia McGrath, playing despite testing positive for Covid-19, fell cheaply as Radha dived full length to her left at backward point to take a stunning catch off Deepti. Ashleigh had hit a few boundaries, including a towering six over long-on off Radha.

But Sneh deceived her with flight and loop to be stumped easily by Taniyaa Bhatia. Beth got her fifty by thumping a juicy full toss over long-off. But India continued to take scalps as Grace Harris miscued to mid-on off Renuka.

In the next over, Beth tried to clear long-on off Sneh. But Deepti backtracked from mid-on and stuck out her right arm even as she was losing balance to complete a one-handed blinder.

India’s impressive fielding show continued as Meghna took a sharp catch at mid-wicket to send Alana King back while Jess Jonassen was caught short of her crease by a direct hit from Smriti. 161-8 was enough for Australia to continue their title-winning juggernaut.

Brief Scores: Australia 161-8 in 20 overs (Beth Mooney 61, Meg Lanning 36; Renuka Singh 2-25, Sneh Rana 2-38) beat India 152 all out in 19.3 overs (Harmanpreet Kaur 65, Jemimah Rodrigues 33; Ashleigh Gardner 3-16, Megan Schutt 2-27) by nine runs

Instagram now to soon test ultra tall photos

0

In a bid to match its full-screen reels, the Meta-owned photo and video-sharing platform Instagram has confirmed that it will soon begin testing new ‘ultra-tall photos’.

According to The Verge, the company will introduce support for slimmer, taller 9:16 screen ratio photos to help them fill the entire screen as users scroll through the app’s feed.

Currently, the platform tops out around a 4:5 screen ratio when displaying vertical images that have been cropped accordingly and the new test will begin “in a week or two”.

“You can have tall videos, but you cannot have tall photos on Instagram, so we thought maybe we should make sure that we treat both equally,” Instagram head Adam Mosseri said during his weekly ‘Ask Me Anything.

Earlier, Instagram’s TikTok-like redesign was criticized by some photographers for the way it forced all photos to awkwardly display in a 9:16 frame.

Reportedly, the company still intends to showcase that ultra-tall photo experience but without mandating it across the board.

As per the reports, the company has also said it will reduce the number of recommendations being shown to users until it is better at selecting content they will actually enjoy.

Recently, the platform has begun asking some users about their race and ethnicity.

The company said if they do not know people’s race or ethnicity, they will be limited in assessing how their products impact different communities.

DD to telecast Sri Aurobindo documentary on Aug 14-15

0

On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Sri Aurobindo and the 75th anniversary of India’s Independence, Doordarshan will premiere the films ‘The Transformation’ in English and ‘Naya Janma’ in Hindi on August 14 and 15, respectively. The film is about 54 minutes long.

‘The Transformation’ (‘Naya Janma’ in Hindi) traces the life of Sri Aurobindo from 1908 to 1909, a turning point in his spiritual evolution. The Alipore Bomb Case trial, which took place from May 1908 to May 1909, is an event of historical significance during which the British government arrested Sri Aurobindo, then a prominent nationalist leader known by his previous name, Aurobindo Ghose, his brother Barindra Ghose, and a number of young revolutionaries.

They were charged with “conspiracy” or “waging war against the King” — the equivalent of high treason and punishable with death by hanging.

This documentary highlights landmark events that took place during this period. The film has shots of the actual locations in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where the bomb blast took place and for which Khudiram Bose was hanged. It covers the railway station where Bose’s associate, Prafulla Chaki, shot himself before being caught and the hill where Barindra Ghose and his associates tested the bomb.

The film also includes shots of the Alipore Jail in Kolkata where Sri Aurobindo was kept in solitary confinement and the Uttarpara Jaykrishna Public Library in West Bengal, where Sri Aurobindo for the first time revealed publicly his Yoga and his spiritual experiences. Rare newspapers from the British Library and the National Library with actual writings from Sri Aurobindo form the basis of this film.

Filmed with multiple cameras, ‘The Transformation’ (‘Naya Janma’) has been directed by Abhijit Dasgupta, the recipient of more than 30 national and international documentary film awards. The music is by Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar and Anup Mukherjee supervised the sound design. The editor of the film is Satyendra Mohanty.

The Pandava song in the film has been rendered by ‘Chota Teejan’ Sima Ghosh and a song dating back to 1910 has been recreated by Sohini Roy Chowdhury.

In the courtroom enactments, Cyrus Madan plays the prosecuting counsel Yeardley Norton’s role. Pradip Mitra is Additional Sessions Judge Charles Beachcroft and Ashoke Viswanathan appears as Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das, then a young barrister.

The film has been produced by the Sri Aurobindo Society and the Kolkata Sukriti Foundation.
