Actor Adivi Sesh, whose recently released film ‘Major’ came in for critical acclaim, has said that he intends to take a brief break before joining the final schedule of his upcoming Telugu film ‘Hit 2’.

In a statement that was widely shared on social media, Adivi Sesh said, “Hi all, First off, thank you for making ‘Major’ an extraordinary success. It has been a truly incredible journey.

“I was supposed to come back to ‘Hit 2’ right after the release of ‘Major’ and complete the last schedule of shoot. “We will update you very soon on the release of ‘Hit 2’ with a bang. KD is coming fully loaded, ready to set the screen on fire. Thank you for understanding.

Dhawan, Gill guide India to three-run win in high-scoring first ODI vs West Indies

0

India skipper for the ODI series Shikhar Dhawan and young opener Shubman Gill came up with a century partnership as the tourists first piled up a massive 308/7 in 50 overs before winning the nerve-wracking opening game of the three-match series by three runs at the Queen’s Park Oval on Saturday (IST).

While Dhawan missed the century by just three runs, Gill, returning to the playing XI in ODIs for the first time since December 2020, played with a point to prove, scoring a magnificent 64 off just 53 balls.

The 22-year-old Gill showed tremendous class as he smashed the West Indies pacers for boundaries inside the powerplay, racing to 41 off 28 balls in the first 10 overs and bringing up his maiden ODI half-century soon off just 36 balls.

At the other end, Dhawan played second fiddle but kept scoring at a healthy rate as the duo brought up their 100-run partnership in just 14 overs. The captain too managed to get to his half-century, his 36th in ODI cricket.

With both the batters scoring at a fast clip, it needed something special to break the partnership and Nicholas Pooran came up with a brilliant direct hit to dismiss Gill for 64.

West Indies managed to slip in a few quiet overs but the pairing of Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer batted with composure to ensure the hosts didn’t make any more inroads. Iyer faced a few short-pitched deliveries but tore the spinners apart.

Dhawan looked set for his 18th career ODI ton but a superb catch by Shamarh Brooks brought his innings to an end just three runs short of a century. Iyer (54) too fell soon after his fifty. With 14 overs to go, India was in complete control at 231/3 and looked on course to post a massive total. But the West Indies bowlers fought back brilliantly to keep pegging at the wickets and pushing the visitors back.

Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel made decent contributions to take India past 300, finishing at 308/7.

Despite losing Shai Hope early in the innings, the West Indies chase was off to a great start thanks to a 117-run second-wicket partnership between Kyle Mayers (75) and Shamarh Brooks (46) who set the platform for their teammates. Brandon King (54) anchored the chase well, bringing up his third ODI fifty while constantly losing partners at the other end.

West Indies needed only 120 runs in the last 15 overs with seven wickets. They were looking at a historic run chase but the Indian bowlers had other plans. First Mohammed Siraj dismissed the dangerous Nicholas Pooran (25) and Rovman Powell (6) soon followed his captain back to the pavilion as Yuzvendra Chahal bagged the first of his two wickets.

Akela Hosein (32 not out) and Romario Shepherd (39 not out) put a late blitz bringing their side within 38 runs off the target with the last three overs to go. Despite the late onslaught, the India pacers weathered the storm with Siraj successfully defending 15 runs in the final over.

Brief scores: India 308/7 in 50 overs (Shikhar Dhawan 97, Shubman Gill 64, Shreyas Iyer 54; Alzarri Joseph 2/61, Gudakesh Motie 2/54) beat West Indies 305/6 in 50 overs (Kyle Mayers 75, Shamarh Brooks 46, Brandon King 54, Akeal Hosein 32 not out, Romario Shepherd 39 not out) by three runs.

Byju’s allegedly owes BCCI dues, Paytm wants to sublicense title rights: Report

0

The BCCI seems to be having issues with its two main sponsors as Indian cricket team’s jersey sponsor Byju’s allegedly owes over Rs 80 crore as dues to the board while Paytm wants to transfer its title rights to a third party.

Byju and the BCCI had agreed on the extension of their partnership until the end of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India at a 10 per cent increment in April. However, the Edtech company has apparently not submitted the required bank guarantee and owes the dues.

The whole sponsorship issue was discussed by the BCCI Apex Council on Thursday, a Cricbuzz report said.

“As of 16.7.2022, Bjyu’s following payments have been overdue Rs. 22,22,76,000 (Net of TDS) March 2022 as of (previous contract term). Invoice amounting to Rs. 106.49 crore from June-July 2022 (new term) are raised out of which Rs 86.21 crores is due (as on 21 July 2022),” a BCCI note put up before the Apex Council read.

“Bjyu’s hasn’t furnished the new bank guarantee yet. The company has been insisting on agreeing to the revised payment arrangement i.e. via a third party which shall be mentioned in the contract. BCCI’s last communication to Byju’s on 12.7.2022 has been to sign the amendment as per the agreed revisions mentioned above,” it added.

However, the Edtech company has issued a categorical denial saying money is not due from its end.

“We’re extremely proud to be the principal sponsor of the Indian cricket team. No outstanding payment is due. We are extending the contract and payment terms for the same will be as per the new contract,” a Bjyu’s spokesperson said.

On the other hand, Paytm, the rights holder of title sponsorship has requested the BCCI to assign the title rights to Mastercard.

“Given the COVID situation, during the last two years, Paytm’s many businesses have needed to make dynamic changes in their plans and marketing spends. On 1.7.2022, Paytm sent an official request to BCCI for assigning their Indian home cricket title sponsorship rights to a global leader in its category, Mastercard,” the BCCI note further read.

“As per the current agreement with Paytm (period 1st Sep 2019 till 31st Mar 2023), there is a provision for assignment of Rights to a third party, however the timeline for such a request was to be made on or before 1st July 2021 for the assignment w.e.f. 1st Sep 2021 with a 5 per cent assignment fee at the same deliverable terms. The timeline for the request to assign is post the due date, however we can make an exception looking at the long standing relationship with Paytm and consider their request favourably,” it added.

The online tutorial firm Byju’s first came on board back as an sponsor for BCCI in 2019 when mobile manufacturer Oppo transferred the sponsorship rights to them while Paytm had extended its association with the board as the title sponsor for international and domestic cricket matches in India by four years in August of the same year.

K Sera Sera, Vikram Bhatt set up India’s first virtual production studio

0

K Sera Sera and Vikram Bhatt have opened India’s first virtual production studio located on the Dahisar Highway, Mumbai, and spread over an area of 50,000 sq. ft. It has four independent floors where four films/projects can be shot at one time.

Speaking about the project, Vikram Bhatt said: “The film ‘Judaa Hoke Bhi’ was for us a test of the virtual production technology, that is, with LEDs. We successfully managed to make the entire film on a 60×60 floor. The greatest victory for us is that the film has been released last week and millions of people worldwide have watched it.”

He continued: “We’re glad to announce that audiences have accepted visuals made from our virtual technology and the viewers have said that they found no difference between the real and the unreal — in fact, the virtual scenes have turned out to be better than real. Our victory is that what we made has been taken to the audience and has passed the test. ‘JHKB’ was our R&D film; we now have a ‘proof of concept’.”

Explaining the benefits of the technology, Bhatt said visuals made with the help of Virtual Film Technology look grand and are very cost-effective too, ‘Now, Bollywood film producers can become global after joining us and regional filmmakers will be able to make it big nationally. For a minimum investment, we provide maximum visualization. That is, If you invest Rs 5 crore in any project, our Studio Virtual Worlds will make it look like a Rs 30-crore project.”

Speaking about the global vision of the project, K Sera Sera’s owner, Satish Panchariya, noted: “With our virtual production technology, we have decided to cater to not just Indian cinema, but also to world cinema because now we can match up to standards of any film that is made anywhere.”

Expanding on the theme, Panchariya said: “We are therefore not just targeting the 6,000 or 7,000 cinema screens in India; we are targeting the 1.5 lakh screens around the world and 150 OTT/satellite platforms operating globally. We are keen to make our films in English, Hindi, and even Spanish so that we can reach audiences across the world.”

And he promised: “Now our films will not look inferior; they will not look like they need more money, because this technology of virtual production will give us the grandeur and the majestic images that we have always desired.”

The benefits, according to Panchariya, are obvious. This technology for a big film will allow filmmakers to save up to 40-50 percent of the predetermined budget. And this would be desirable for every big project. This is, however, not about “the big film”. This is about the films that wanted to look big but didn’t have the budget to do so.

“So, for a regional film which is being shot in Punjab but just wants to have five scenes in Australia, or probably has the whole film shot in Australia, it is no longer necessary that the cast and crew travel to Australia. For the cost of shooting in Mumbai, you could shoot with this technology and make it look like Australia and complete all the action scenes and the songs. This means that virtual production is the ultimate equalizer,” Panchariya said.

Sharing his excitement over the development, acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt said: “You’ll be able to get the grand visuals and the vastness which only big films could afford till now. That is why we invite everyone to share this technology; we want to serve everyone. We want to tell the world that they can approach us and make their films look like they always wanted them to look: big and fabulous. We can do that for you, and this is the most important thing.”

Mahesh Bhatt added: “We invite not only the Hindi film producers, but we are also inviting the small producer, the big producer, the regional film producer to come and partake of this technology and help us to help them so that together we can become a strong industry.”

Panchariya pointed out: “With this technology, our entire Indian film industry can show its muscle to the world. We have always been looked upon as a country of millions who can make films, but it has always been a certain kind of films, a certain budget we have not had, the budget to make big films like ‘The Lord of the Rings, ‘Star Wars’ or ‘Avengers’.

“But with this latest technology, we have got it. We don’t have to look further. This is the beautiful part about it, that we can stand up as a ‘Virat swaroop’ to the world and say: ‘Here we are finally, standing shoulder to shoulder with world cinema’.”

‘Oppenheimer’ First Poster shows devastation caused by atomic bomb

0

Christopher Nolan’s biographical film ‘Oppenheimer’ dropped its first poster, promising a blockbuster in the making. The film is based on the 2005 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin.

Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist, was regarded as the ‘father of the atomic bomb’. He was heading the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II and it was there that the atomic bomb was first developed and tested.

The poster showcases a silhouette, presumably of lead actor Cillian Murphy, as he stands at the core of the mushroom cloud caused when the atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6, 1945. It showcases the devastation brought about by the bombing.

Nolan has returned to the director’s chair after his last outing ‘Tenet’. The film stars a powerful lineup of Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, and Rami Malek.

Universal won a bidding war for the project, Nolan’s first movie in years not made with his longtime studio home, Warner Bros., according to ‘Hollywood Reporter’.

Murphy, who commands a huge fan following thanks to the web series ‘Peaky Blinders’, has earlier worked with Nolan in films such as ‘Inception’, ‘The Dark Knight franchise, and ‘Dunkirk’. This is the first time, however, that Murphy is working in a Nolan film as the lead.

‘Oppenheimer’ is set to debut in theatres on July 21, 2023.

Ranveer dances to ‘Liger’ number ‘Akdi Pakdi’ with Vijay, Ananya

0

Bollywood superstar Ranveer Singh showed up at the trailer launch of Telugu superstar Vijay Deverakonda’s upcoming film ‘Liger’ on Thursday in Mumbai. Showing support for the pan-India debutant, he adds that ‘masala movie’ is the flavor of the season now.

Ranveer appeared on stage in his forever high-energy avatar and danced along with Ananya Pandey and Vijay to the tune of ‘Audi Pakdi’.

The on-stage banter between Vijay and Ranveer made Karan Johar, who was also present there as the producer of the film, think of making a film casting both the actors together.

Praising the trailer, while interacting with Vijay, Ranveer said, “I think this is the time for masala films, and the audience is loving mass entertainers all over. This film is exactly that and I can’t wait to watch the film sitting as the audience in the theatre. I love mass entertainers and I think all the love I got, is because of this brand of cinema. Vijay is gonna rock it!”

Vijay, who is playing an MMA player went through a huge body transformation for the film and it was quite time-consuming according to the actor.

While chatting with Ranveer, Vijay said: “From the time I read the script, I decided to get my body right. Yes, it was tough but worth doing everything for this film. I have given my everything to Liger. Thanks to the pandemic, we have got the time for preparation.”

Asked if Karan is interested in casting Ranveer and Vijay together in a film, the filmmaker said: “If both of them are ready, I can sign them right away really! I think Ranveer is an actor who never had any problem with a two-hero film. He is not someone who wants all the focus on him in a film, he is a team player. He looks for character and not who are the other actors. In fact, we were making a film ‘Takht’ but it has got postponed now. Ranveer never had an ego on such things, he is an artist.”

Directed by Puri Jagannath, produced by Dharma Production, ‘Liger’, also starring Ananya Pandey, releases on August 25.

World Championships: Neeraj Chopra qualifies for final with a throw of 88.39m (Ld)

0

Indian ace Neeraj Chopra reached the final of the World Athletics Championships 2022 javelin throw competition after producing an impressive throw of 88.39 metres in Round 1 and topping Group A of the qualification round, here.

Placed in Group A at Hayward Field, Neeraj, the reigning Olympic champion, recorded an 88.39m throw in his first attempt to breach the qualifying mark and didn’t take his second and third attempts on Thursday.

Notably, the qualifying cut for the Oregon 2022 men’s javelin throw competition was set at 83.50m for the 12 best performers.

Neeraj, who set a national record of 89.94 meters en route to a silver medal at the Stockholm Diamond League earlier this year, set the tone in Group A with an 88.39-meter throw in his very first attempt. This was the third-best throw Neeraj Chopra has recorded in his career.

The Tokyo Olympics champion had failed to get past the qualifying round at the 2017 Worlds in London, his debut World Championships. He missed the 2019 World Championships in Doha due to an injury.

Tokyo silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch was the only other javelin thrower in Group A to breach the qualifying mark with an 85.23-metre effort, which also came in his first throw.

Later in the day, Neeraj’s compatriot Rohit Yadav also joined the reigning Olympic champion in the final from Group B. With a best throw of 80.42m, Rohit finished sixth in his group and 11th overall to make the 12-man final field.

Before Neeraj and Rohit, Davinder Singh Kang was the only Indian male javelin thrower to qualify for a World Championships javelin final. Kang finished 12th in London in 2017.

Meanwhile, reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada topped Group B and the final list of qualifiers with an 89.91m throw, pushing the 24-year-old Chopra to second in the overall leaderboard.

Germany’s Julian Weber (87.28m) also met the automatic qualification mark from Group B. Pakistan’s javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem (81.71m) made the final after placing ninth overall. London 2012 gold medallist Keshorn Walcott was the upset of the day. The Trinidad and Tobago athlete could only record an underwhelming 78.87m best throw to finish 16th and missed the cut.

Leading businessmen at the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) analyzed the looming threat of a Sri Lanka-like economic emergency as the dollar hit an all-time high against the local currency, local media reported.

FPCCI President Irfan Iqbal Shiekh said the rupee’s free fall has reached a point where it has become a threat to national security as the letters of credit (LCs) for petroleum imports were being opened at a much higher rate than the interbank rate, Dawn reported.

He feared that a serious law and order situation might emerge in the event of any fuel shortages for transportation and electricity generation.

“We are not far from a Sri Lanka-like scenario and radical decisions are needed to reverse the situation,” Dawn reported quoting the FPCCI president as saying.

Leading businessman Aqeel Karim Dhedhi expressed his shock that despite the fact that many numbers are showing improvement over the last few weeks, such as global oil prices, declining edible oil prices, and better supplies of many other commodities, the government has failed to rein in inflation.

In a statement, Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) President Salman Aslam, said the business community had serious reservations about the government’s mysterious silence for not taking any steps to manage the declining economy.

He said that the value of the rupee was depreciating artificially, leaving the currency free-floating in the market and causing severe losses to the economy. Investors have lost confidence after the stock market crash and the negative rating of Pakistan by the Fitch rating agency, Dawn reported.

Aslam predicted a storm of inflation if the rupee continued to fall against the dollar.

World Athletics C’ships: Annu Rani reaches javelin throw final

0

India’s Annu Rani qualified for the javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, the first Indian woman to qualify for the second straight javelin throw final in World Championships.

Annu Rani, who had also reached the final Doha edition in 2019 and eventually finished eighth, qualified for the final with a throw of 59.60 meters. She was placed eighth among 12 competitors that have qualified for the final to be held on Friday.

Competing in Group B, Annu started with a foul and then came up with a throw of 55.35m and 59.60m in her third attempt to finish fifth in her group. Only three competitors — Haruka Kitaguchi (64.32m) of Japan, Tokyo Olympics winner Shiying Liu (63.86m) of China, and Levita Jasiunaite (63.80) of Lithuania achieved the qualifying standard of 62.50m and will start as the favorites for the medals.

The qualifying cut was set at 62.50m for the 12 best performers. Annu thus was placed 8th among 29 competitors that participated in the competition.

Defending champion Kelsey-Lee Barber of Australia, a Tokyo 2020 bronze winner and two-time Commonwealth Games medallist, was fifth with a 61.27m effort.

Three-time worlds medallist Huihui of China (57.59m), Tokyo Olympic silver medallist Maria Andrejczyk of Poland (55.47m), Commonwealth Games champion Kathryn Mitchell of Australia (53.09m), and Rio Olympic champion Sara Kolak of Croatia (foul) did not make the cut.

Parul Choudhary fails to reach final

Meanwhile, India’s Parul Chaudhary failed to qualify for the final of the women’s 5000m as she could only manage the timing of 15:54.03. She finished 17th among 19 participants in Heat 2 whereas the top five qualified for the final.

Parul Chaudhary’s personal best in the 5000m is 15:36.03, achieved at the Asian Athletics Championships in Doha in 2019. The women’s 5000m national record is held by Preeja Sreedharan, who clocked 15:15.89 at the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey, who won the gold medal in the women’s 10000m at Oregon earlier, topped the heats with 14:52.27.

Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia and Tokyo 2020 champion Sifan Hassan of Netherlands also made the cut. Margaret Kipkemboi of Kenya, silver medallist at Doha 2019 and the 2018 Commonwealth Games, will also run in the final.

PM Modi not scheduled to address UNGA this year; Jaishankar is listed

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not scheduled to be at the high-level United Nations General Assembly session in September when presidents and prime ministers throng here, according to the roster of speakers which instead lists External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar as India’s speaker.

In a sign of the world emerging from the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic, all the speeches will be in person at this year’s session that begins on September 20, Paulina Kubiak, the spokesperson for Assembly President Abdulla Shahid, said on Wednesday.

The high-level session went all virtual in 2020 and turned hybrid in 2021 with some speaking remotely and others like Modi attending in person.

The leaders are scheduled in a hierarchical order starting with the 101 heads of state, followed by prime ministers, the deputies, the ministers, and others.

On this scale, Jaishankar as a minister gets a slot towards the end of the fifth day’s morning session after about 2 p.m. local time (11:30 p.m. in India) on September 24. (Sometimes countries have the scheduling adjusted to coincide with convenient broadcast times at home.)

Hungary’s Csaba Korosi, who takes over from Shahid, will preside over the session.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, which will take up a chunk of the session’s bandwidth, is scheduled to be at the meeting.

His nemesis Russia’s President Vladimir Putin is staying away and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is the listed speaker.

The acute global food insecurity and energy shortages resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine are other topics expected to dominate the session.

The UK’s Prime Minister – whoever is elected in early September – has a spot on the roster.

Two newly elected leaders of troubled South Asian countries, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe are among the scheduled participants.

Prime Ministers Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, Sher Bahadur Deuba of Nepal, and Lotay Tshering of Bhutan are also listed.

The Taliban regime, which is not recognized by any country, does not have a slot, nor does anyone from the government of ousted President Ashraf Ghani, which still in effect holds the country’s seat at the UN.

But Kyaw Moe Tun, Myanmar’s permanent representative from the democratically elected government of Aun San Suu Kyi’s party still represents the country at the UN and is listed as the speaker for the country.

Following a long-established tradition that gives the opening slot to Brazil, its President Jair Bolsonaro is to be the first speaker followed by US President Joe Biden.

Prime Minister Modi has addressed the General Assembly four times in person and once by video. He skipped the meeting in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

In his speech in 2021, the Prime Minister extolled India’s democratic credentials, calling it “the mother of democracies”.

It was seen as a riposte to lecturing by US Vice President Kamala Harris in Washington on the eve of the speech.

He laid out the parameters of his foreign policy of assertive independence going beyond the traditional concept of nonalignment in his first address in 2014.

Prime Minister Modi has had four tours abroad so far in 2022 covering seven countries.
