Joseph Quinn’s ‘Stranger Things’ role saves him when detained by US immigration

0

Actor Joseph Quinn was held in a “dungeon” by a US immigration official but was finally released when he was recognized as Eddie Munson from the popular show ‘Stranger Things.

Facing the questioning when he arrived in New York City for an appearance on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’, the ‘Stranger Things’ was grateful when the man’s colleague intervened and recognized him as the leader of the Hellfire Club from the show, reports aceshowbiz.com.

“It’s so nice to be here because I very nearly didn’t make it,” the 28-year-old actor told the show’s host Jimmy Fallon.

“I was taken into, I guess what you could call more of a dungeon. And I was asked to wait there for about 20 minutes and then I was summoned to this desk where someone asked me, ‘What are you doing in the United States, sir?’ ”

“I said, ‘I’m actually here to meet Jimmy Fallon on ‘The Tonight Show.’ And he didn’t believe me,” he went on recalling.

“One of his colleagues looked over at him, looked at me, and said: ‘Leave Eddie alone!’ And then (the colleague) said, ‘It’s Eddie from ‘Stranger Things, and he was like, ‘You’re Eddie Munson?’ ”

The officials eventually let Joseph go, but not before quizzing him for some spoilers.

He continued, “(The man asked), ‘Do you come back next season?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know,’ and he said, ‘You better,’ and gave me my passport.”

During his debut appearance on the talk show, Joseph presented Jimmy with a Hellfire Club t-shirt, much to the delight of the talk show host, who said he was “honored” to receive the gift.

He said, “I am honored. I’m part of the Hellfire Club? I will wear this. I cannot wait.”

Joseph previously admitted he felt like a “sociopath” when trying to perfect an American accent for the show.

He said, “You feel like a sociopath. After a while I was so far down the rabbit hole, at points I’d be like, ‘Do I sound good? Do you like this? Do you like what I’m doing?’ ”

“I was talking to Joe Keery and at one point I was so deep in it,” the actor added, “and he was like ‘Dude, I can’t save you, but I promise you it’s gonna be fine.'”

Google now monetising YouTube Shorts, early results encouraging

0

In the era of TikTok, Google-owned YouTube Shorts is catching up fast and the company has seen encouraging results in its early monetization efforts on the short-video making platform.

Philipp Schindler, Senior Vice President and Chief Business Officer at Alphabet (Google’s parent company), said that consumers are increasing and consuming short-form videos obviously and they are seeing this across multiple platforms, including YouTube.

“We’re continuing to see good user engagement on YouTube. Early results in Shorts’ monetization are also encouraging, and we’re excited about the opportunities here,” Schindler said during a call with analysts late on Tuesday.

“We’re excited about the opportunity,” he added.

YouTube Shorts is now being watched by over 1.5 billion signed-in users every month with more than 30 billion daily views.

In the April-June period, YouTube TV surpassed 5 million subscribers, including trailers.

“There’s also a lot of potential for shopping on YouTube. Just last week, we announced a partnership with Shopify. It will help creators easily connect their stores to YouTube and enable shopping across their live streams and videos,” said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google.

YouTube advertising revenue was $7.34 billion in the company’s June quarter (Q2).

Ruth Porat, Chief Financial Officer at Alphabet, said that in YouTube and Network, the pullbacks in spending by some advertisers in the second quarter “reflects uncertainty about a number of factors that are challenging to disaggregate”.

At least 41 structures destroyed in California’s largest wildfire of 2022

0

At least 41 structures have been destroyed by the Oak Fire, now the largest wildfire this year in the US western state of California, authorities said.

The fast-moving wildfire that began on Friday afternoon near the Yosemite National Park in central California’s Mariposa County scorched 18,087 acres (73.2 square km) with 26 percent containment as of Tuesday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

Around 1,440 structures are still under threat as nearly 3,000 firefighters, with aircraft support, are continuing their efforts against the massive wildfire, Xinhua news agency reported.

“Fire crews continue providing structure defense, extinguishing hot spots, and building and improving direct fire lines,” said Cal Fire in an update on Tuesday.

“Persistent drought, critically dry fuel, and tree mortality continue to contribute to the fire’s spread. Humidity levels were slightly higher overnight as monsoonal moisture began to move in,” the agency added.

The Oak Fire has forced thousands of local residents to evacuate. California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Mariposa County on Saturday due to the effects of the explosive fire.

Another explosive wildfire, the Washburn Fire, has burned more than 4,875 acres (19.7 square km) to date with 87 percent contained after nearly three weeks near the Yosemite National Park. The Washburn Fire has drawn national attention as firefighters are battling the blaze to protect some of the world’s oldest and largest trees in the park.

Many of the largest wildfires, including the top five, in California’s history, have happened in the past few years amid a severe drought.

“California continues to experience longer wildfire seasons as a direct result of climate change,” said Cal Fire in its 2022 fire season outlook, noting that “continued dry conditions, with above normal temperatures through spring, will leave fuel moisture levels lower than normal, increasing the potential for wildland fire activity.”

Wildfires have swallowed more than 53,000 acres (214.5 square km) so far this year in the state, according to data released by Cal Fire.

Defence Ministry clears arms procurement worth Rs 28,732cr for Army

0

The Union government has approved the arms procurement proposals worth over Rs 28,000 crore, including swarm drones, bulletproof jackets and close-quarter battle carbines.

The proposals were cleared on Tuesday by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

These proposals will enhance the overall combat prowess of the armed forces along the northern and western borders.

“The Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for capital acquisition proposals of the armed forces amounting to Rs 28,732 crore was accorded by the DAC,” the Defence Ministry said in a statement.

The approval of the new procurement proposals came amid India’s lingering border row with China in eastern Ladakh.

The Ministry said the approval to procure four lakh close-quarter battle carbines was granted to combat the “current complex paradigm of conventional and hybrid warfare” and terrorism at the borders.

“To combat the current complex paradigm of conventional and hybrid warfare and counter-terrorism at the borders, AoN for induction of approx. Four lakh of close quarter battle carbines for the services have also been accorded by the DAC,” it said.

The Ministry said the decision is set to provide a major impetus to the small arms manufacturing industry in the country and enhance “Atmanirbharta” (self-reliance) in small arms.

“Considering the demand for enhanced protection against the threat of enemy snipers to our troops deployed along the Line of Control, and in close combat operations in counter-terrorism scenario, the DAC accorded AON for bulletproof jackets with Indian Standard BIS VI level of protection,” it said.

On the procurement of the armed swarm drones, the Ministry said these are being acquired as drone technology has proved to be a force multiplier in military operations.

“In the recent conflicts across the world, drone technology proved to be a force multiplier in military operations. Accordingly, to augment the Indian Army’s capability in modern warfare, AoN for procurement of autonomous surveillance and armed drone swarms has been accorded by the DAC under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category,” it said.

The DAC has also approved the Navy’s proposal to procure an upgraded 1,250-KW capacity marine gas turbine generator for power generation application onboard the Kolkata class of ships through the Indian industry.

“This will give a major boost to the indigenous manufacturing of gas turbine generators,” the Ministry said.

To enhance the security in the coastal region of the country, the DAC has also approved the proposal of procurement of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels for the Indian Coast Guard under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) with 60 per cent indigenous content, the Ministry added.

Negotiations in Jamaica to develop ‘risky’ mining code

0

Negotiations have begun to develop a mining code that, if adopted, could see the largest extractive operation in human history begin in the deep sea.

But as negotiations get underway in week two of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), the chorus of concern surrounding the emerging industry has amplified.

The International Seabed Authority (ISA), the UN intergovernmental body charged with regulating the emerging deep-sea mining industry, is currently holding its council and assembly meetings in Kingston from July 18 to August 5.

Scientists continue to warn that if the industry were to go ahead, it would result in an irreversible loss of biodiversity and would threaten the planet’s largest carbon sink at a time of global climate emergency.

Earlier this month, the Federated States of Micronesia announced that they had officially joined the Alliance of Countries calling for a Deep-Sea Mining Moratorium, launched by Palau and Fiji at the United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon at the end of June.

The delegation for the Federated States of Micronesia reiterated its support for a moratorium during the ISA’s council meeting last Thursday, stating, “The Ocean is a unitary whole, and what happens in the international seabed area could very well impact coastal waters and territories.”

This is the first time ever that a country has brought a moratorium position to the International Seabed Authority.

During last week’s negotiations, France also addressed the growing momentum for a moratorium that peaked during the UN Ocean Conference, stating, “We are all aware that our organization needs to heed the alarm bells that were launched in Lisbon.”

The delegation also questioned the rush to mine the deep, following Nauru’s triggering of an obscure legal mechanism known as the two-year rule.

Chile and Costa Rica both expressed serious concerns about the hasty attempts to finalize regulations within the next year. Chile suggested that the rush to adopt regulations to allow deep-sea mining was for the benefit of one mining company and was counter to the interests of humankind.

Costa Rica stated that “if we are serious about protecting the marine environment, the only way to do so now is to commit ourselves to not beginning the exploitation of seabed until we have enough data to make science-based decisions”.

Spain took the position that “we should not move to the exploitation phase if the environmental measures are not adequate”, and Monaco called for more time and support for science and cautioned the need to adhere to the precautionary principle.

Nauru also announced it was to renegotiate its contract with the contractor NORI, a subsidiary of The Metals Company. The DSCC called on Nauru to reconsider sponsoring NORI in light of the global anxiety the two-year clause has caused.

Meanwhile, groups representing artisanal fishing communities from Africa and the Pacific have highlighted the risks posed to livelihoods and food security, warning that the industry could “jeopardize the future of coastal communities.”

Emma Wilson, representing OceanCare during the negotiations in Kingston, welcomed the increased recognition from states of the many risks posed by deep-sea mining. “In the absence of critical independent scientific information or social license for the industry, ISA member states are finally waking up to the dangers of strip-mining our planet’s largest remaining wilderness.”

Concerns that the ISA is not fit for purpose also continue to grow.

Last week, allegations of bullying, nepotism, and financial probity came to light, leveled at ISA Secretary General, Michael Lodge. The allegations detail numerous instances of bullying by the Secretary-General with concerns also raised regarding financial auditing and remuneration.

Axar Patel blitz guides India to two-wicket win against West Indies; clinch ODI series

0

India overhauled a massive West Indies total to win the second One-day International at Queen’s Park Oval by two wickets with a smashing unbeaten 64 from Axar Patel at the back end helping the visitors to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series here.

Chasing a mammoth 312 for victory in a 50-over game is always an uphill task and India was in a spot of bother when they required 100 from the last 10 overs with Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda at the crease and just five wickets remaining on Sunday night (IST).

But the two combined patience with pluck and found the boundaries when needed to chase down the target with just two balls remaining. With Hooda departing for 33 in the 45th over, it was left to Patel to complete the task as the all-rounder hit five sixes and three boundaries in his 35-ball 64 to complete the job.

Earlier Shai Hope’s century and Kyle Mayers’ quick-fire 39 had given the hosts a confident start after they won the toss and opted to bat first. Mayers was the more aggressive of the two openers as the left-hander found gaps in the field to fetch boundaries at ease. He raced to 39 off 22 balls when India brought in Hooda, the part-time off-spinner, to bowl at Mayers.

In nine overs, West Indies had already crossed 65 with Mayers on 39 when Hooda came into the attack. He sent back Mayers first ball with an off-break that the left-hander could only chip back to the bowler.

India’s pace battery looked ineffective early on with Avesh Khan, making his ODI debut, going for 36 runs in his first three overs. He finished with 64 runs conceded in nine overs and went wicketless in a forgettable ODI debut.

Hope smashed a hundred in his 100th ODI to join a select list of players in Port of Spain, according to ICC. The hundred, his 13th in the format, came with a massive six off Yuzvendra Chahal in the 45th over of the innings and the West Indian opener celebrated it with another big hit for six off the next ball.

Chahal went for runs on a day when India’s other spinners, Hooda and Axar, kept a leash on the scoring rate. Hope was initially slow to start off but brought up his fifty off 69 balls in the 21st over with a six. India, however, struck in quick succession after that with the wickets of Shamarh Brooks and Brandon King off back-to-back overs from Axar Patel and Chahal.

Hope, however, found a partner in Nicholas Pooran, and the duo put on a brilliant stand worth 117 runs with Pooran taking the initiative to take the attack on the Indian bowlers. Hope continued to build on his solid start and completed his landmark hundred late in the innings. Pooran would go on to make a half-century, but before the expected big acceleration in the death overs, Shardul Thakur bowled him around his legs.

Brief scores: West Indies 311/6 in 50 overs (Shai Hope 115, Kyle Mayers 39, Shamarh Brooks 35, Nicholas Pooran 74; Shardul Thakur 3/54) lost to India 312/8 in 49.4 overs (Shubman Gill 43, Shreyas Iyer 63, Sanju Samson 54, Deepak Hooda 33, Axar Patel 64 not out; Alzarri Joseph 2/46, Kyle Mayers 2/48) by two wickets.

Actor Adivi Sesh, whose recently released film ‘Major’ came in for critical acclaim, has said that he intends to take a brief break before joining the final schedule of his upcoming Telugu film ‘Hit 2’.

In a statement that was widely shared on social media, Adivi Sesh said, “Hi all, First off, thank you for making ‘Major’ an extraordinary success. It has been a truly incredible journey.

“I was supposed to come back to ‘Hit 2’ right after the release of ‘Major’ and complete the last schedule of shoot. However, due to my unflinching commitment to taking Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan’s story to every nook and corner of the world, I am physically and emotionally exhausted (in a nice way).”

“So, I had requested Natural Star Nani and Dr. Sailesh for a break before I can come back and complete the final shooting schedule of ‘Hit 2’, to which they have graciously agreed. After that, we shall commence post-production in an amazing manner.”

“We will update you very soon on the release of ‘Hit 2’ with a bang. KD is coming fully loaded, ready to set the screen on fire. Thank you for understanding.
Sincerely, Adivi Sesh.”

Written and directed by Dr. Sailesh Kolanu, the film is being produced by Prashanti Tipirneni and is presented by actor Nani.
