Prabhas-starrer ‘Project K’ producer Ashwini Dutt refuses to toe Guild line

0

A recent meeting of the Active Telugu Film Producers’ Guild, which is led by star producer Dil Raju, decided to halt film production from August 1 until a solution is found. ‘Project K’ producer Ashwini Dutt, who has been reluctant to listen to the Dil Raju-led Producer’s Guild, has spoken on the same.

The majority of Telugu producers support Dil Raju regarding the shooting strike, but Ashwini Dutt has chosen to take a different route. Ashwini claimed recently in a media interview that Dil Raju is the one who perplexes audiences with his gimmicks. “He will first increase ticket prices before promoting the film at a reduced price”, Ashwini said.

“We won’t halt any filming, and our projects won’t follow Dil Raju’s regulations. We’ll keep shooting”, he continued. Ashwini is currently preoccupied with the ‘Project K’ production, one of the biggest Indian movies starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles.

Ashwini Dutt had also spoken about ‘Project K’ on the occasion.

Samantha pays higher price to purchase apartment where she lived with Naga Chaitanya

0

After the world outside Tollywood discovered her in the web series ‘Family Man 2’, Samantha Ruth Prabhu has been in the news for one reason or the other.

First, it was her breakup with her husband, the actor Naga Chaitanya. She then went on to create a storm on the Internet with her wow pictures. And of course, her smoldering ‘Oo antava mama’ dance number in the Allu Arjun-starrer ‘Pushpa: The Rise’ put Samantha in full public glare.

The latest buzz doing the rounds about the actress is on how she went and purchased the same house she was living in before she broke up with Naga Chaitanya.

In an interview with a portal, the senior Telugu actor, who’s also a realtor, Murali Mohan recalled how Samantha was adamant about purchasing the Hyderabad house where the couple stayed after getting married.

“Naga Chaitanya and Samantha were staying in this apartment after marriage,” Mohan said in an interview with the portal. “Later, they purchased an independent house and sold this apartment on the condition that they will hand it over once their new house is ready. Meanwhile, the couple got divorced and Samantha was looking for a place of her own.”

Mohan continued: “She wasn’t happy with the options and felt that this apartment is the best suited for her. But it was not available as it had been sold to someone else. Samantha insisted on the apartment, so I somehow convinced the new owners and they were even given a higher price.”

The senior actor added that Samantha and her mother stay in the apartment now.

Shakespeare, vintage cars, Duran Duran light up opening ceremony of Birmingham Commonwealth Games

An array of houses from around the Commonwealth, created using virtual reality, bringing back scenes of the bygone era to depict the most famous exports of the city and amid music, dance and a cultural milieu showcasing the life and times of the local people, the city of Birmingham welcomed 6,500 sportspersons from across 72 nations and territories for the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games at a gala opening ceremony here.

The two-hour programme during which the organisers put up a carnival-like display that boasted Birmingham’s impressive inventions, buttons, car horns, celluloid film and printing press, paid tributes to the working class at the Alexander Stadium through a raging bull, 10 metres high and built over five months, pulled in by female chain makers who would work long hours in hot and cramped outhouses to make small chains back in the 19th century.

Then to represent the victory of the working classes, the bull shed its armour to symbolise the famous strikes of 1910 when female chain makers went on strike for better conditions — and after 10 weeks they won, earning a new minimum wage that doubled their earnings. The collapsing bull represents the victory of the working classes over their employers.

The Indian contingent, led by two-time Olympic medallist shuttler P.V. Sindhu and men’s hockey team captain Manpreet Singh, walked into the stadium resplendent in ceremonial dresses.

The Royal guests, HRH Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall entered in the Prince’s own Aston Martin he bought in the 1970s while the Birmingham Royal Ballet presented amazing athleticism. The multi-cultural identity of the city was presented through an inspiring speech by child rights and education activist Malala Yousafzai, winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

“As we watch incredible athletes of the Commonwealth Games, each child deserves the chance to reach their full potential and pursue their wildest dreams,” said Malala in her speech.

The magnificent Bards of Brum represent some of the city’s most famous exports: William Shakespeare, composer Edward Elgar, the inventor of the modern dictionary Samuel Johnson and the 18th-century Lunar Society, the forefathers of modern Birmingham.

Returning to the city where their four-decade career began, British music icon Duran Duran joined forces to create the finale to the ceremony’s stunning musical offer, featuring some of the city’s most celebrated artists and promoting its emerging talent on a global stage, from Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi to vocalists Indigo Marshall and Gambini, under the musical direction of rapper, artist and educator Joshua ‘RTKal’ Holness.

And with this soundtrack captivating attention, the athletes paraded into the stadium, with Australia, the previous hosts of the Games back in 2018, who have brought their largest-ever team to the Games.

The teams entered the stadium representing their respective continents and with neighbouring countries giving them company instead of being paraded in alphabetical order.

The rest of the nations from Oceania have appeared, including the Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and New Zealand.

They were followed by countries and territories from

Director of ‘Macharla Constituency’ Raja Shekhar Reddy approached the police against the internet user. He has filed a complaint against a Twitter troll who he feels is responsible for defaming him.

Nitin’s ‘Machar’s Constituency’, which is slated for a massive release on August 12, will feature him as an IAS officer. However, the film has also been controversial since the old tweets of ‘Macharla’s Constituency’ director M.S. Raja Shekhar went viral two days ago.

With just a few days left for its release, the action-packed drama has become a controversy as the director has been embroiled in an online controversy regarding his political leanings.

The film producer countered that the director had posted inappropriate tweets in the past, but this was not his profile and a fake account had been created in his name. Raja Shekhar Reddy defended himself that the spelling of the above-mentioned handle was also different.

However, internet users mocked it and also highlighted his other tweets in which he trolled Telugu Desam Party leaders, thereby showing his support for YSRCP (the current ruling party of Andhra Pradesh).

Responding to this, the Director of ‘Macharla Constituency’ filed a complaint with Hyderabad Cyber Crime Department. In a written complaint, the director stated that even before the release of his film, some people were trying to create unwanted hatred against him.

The above tweet contained some impermissible language and was anti-caste towards other castes, especially those who contested against YS. Jagan Mohan Reddy lost in Andhra Pradesh Election 2019.

Responding to this, the Director of ‘Macharla Constituency’ filed a complaint with Hyderabad Cyber Crime Department. In a written complaint, the director stated that even before the release of his film, some people were trying to create unwanted hatred against him.

These old tweets were brought to public attention by social media users who questioned the director’s honor and spread such caste hatred by tagging the director and the actor.

Malaysia confirms cancellation of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ release

0

Malaysian theatre operator Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) has announced that the Chris Hemsworth-starrer “Thor: Love and Thunder” will not get a theatrical release in the country.

This follows from announcements two weeks ago that the film was indefinitely postponed, reports Variety.

“Dear valued customers, please be informed that Disney has updated that marvel Studios’ ‘Thor Love and Thunder’ will not be released in Malaysia after all. We appreciate your patience and we apologize for any inconvenience caused,” GSC said in its social media feeds.

It finished with the rejoinder: “Please buy our merchandise, OK.” That is the second piece of tongue-in-cheek criticism emanating from the country’s largest cinema chain in a week. Shortly after the Marvel Studios presentation at Comic-Con, GSC disseminated the forward calendar of Marvel film releases but crossed out “Thor”.

Directed by Taika Waititi, the film was released on July 8 in North America, where it has grossed $283 million to date. Worldwide, “Thor” has already accumulated $685 million.

The postponement move is the second lost release of a Disney-handled movie in Malaysia in the space of two months.

In June, the release of Pixar animation “Lightyear” was canceled in Malaysia after the country’s censorship authority (LPF) asked for cuts to the film, understood to include a same-sex kiss, in order for the film to obtain release certification.

Disney declined to make the cuts and is expected to put “Lightyear” out directly on streaming service Disney+ Hotstar. Malaysia was one of nearly twenty, mostly Muslim-majority countries which objected to the homosexual tinges of “Lightyear”.

Disney offered no comment on “Thor”, but confirmed that the release will not go forward.

GSC’s pain at the loss of another major Hollywood title reflects the economic damage that Malaysian cinemas have suffered over two years of on-off Covid control measures.

Cinema admissions crashed from an average of 77 million per year in the 2017-2019 period to just 3.72 million in 2021. Exhibitors also complain that the theatrical window in the country has now halved from 90 days to just 45 days.

Prabhas-starrer ‘Project K’ makers eyeing two release dates

0

‘Project K’, starring Prabhas, will be released in October 2023 or January 2024, according to producer Ashwini Dutt. He spoke candidly about the magnificence that viewers may anticipate from this high-budget film during a recent media discussion.

In comparing ‘Project K’ to ‘Avengers,’ Ashwini Dutt praises the film’s amazingness and alludes to its opulence, which stars Prabhas and Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone in the lead roles.

“America and China will be our primary target markets, as we are prepared to introduce this movie to as many worldwide markets as we can”, Ashwini Dutt said when speaking about ‘Project K’.

‘Project K’, directed by ‘Mahanati’ filmmaker Nag Ashwin, is billed as a sci-fi thriller that will use a variety of technology in its production.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan will be seen in an important role in ‘Project K’ as well.

On the other hand, Prabhas is to be seen in Om Raut’s ‘Adi Purush’, and Prashanth Neel’s ‘Salaar’. The ‘Darling’ actor will also act under Sandeep Reddy Vanga in a movie titled ‘Spirit’.

India cruise to ODI series sweep over West Indies

0

Openers Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan hit half-centuries as India completed a series sweep over the West Indies with an emphatic 119-run victory in a rain-affected clash in Port of Spain.

There were plenty of delays during India’s innings, with the visitors forced to hit out late after a weather break saw the match initially reduced to 40 overs per side.

Another rain delay at the end of the 36th over saw India’s innings completed even earlier, with the visitors posting a decent total of 225/3 from their allotted overs.

Opener Shubman Gill was the standout with a career-best 98*, while stand-in skipper Shikhar Dhawan (58) hit his second half-century for the series.

Gill was deservedly named Player of the Match and Player of the Series for his heroics during the tour, with the young right-hander scoring two half-centuries and a total of 205 runs from three hits.

It goes to show that India is compiling some good depth in their white-ball squads, with Shreyas Iyer, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, and Yuzvendra Chahal also showing good signs during the three-match series.

Experienced pacer Mohammed Siraj chipped in with two wickets early in West Indies’ run chase on Wednesday, while Chahal finished the job by picking up four scalps of his own during an impressive spell.

West Indies’ form in 50-over cricket has been surprisingly poor of late, with the Caribbean side now sitting on a nine-match losing streak after consecutive series losses against Pakistan, Bangladesh, and now India.

While there were plenty of positive signs in the first two matches of the series against India, the third and final game was completely one-sided as the hosts struggled to match it with their opponents.

Spinner Hayden Walsh picked up two wickets – but conceded 57 runs from his 10 overs – while West Indies’ top-order failed to come to grips with India’s new-ball bowling attack.

Skipper Nicholas Pooran and right-hander Brandon King each scored 42 in this match, but there were plenty of failures as a disappointing series came to an end for Phil Simmons’ side.

Brief Scores: India 225/3 in 36 overs (Gill 98 not out, Dhawan 58; Walsh 2-57) beat West Indies 137 in 26 overs (Pooran 42, King 42; Chahal 4-17, Siraj 2-14) by 119 runs (DLS)

Meta crosses $1 bn annual revenue run rate for Reels ads

0

Meta has crossed the $1 billion annual revenue run rate for ads on its TikTok rival short-video making platform Reels, and Reels now has a higher revenue run rate than Facebook/Instagram Stories at identical times post-launch, its Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has revealed.

Zuckerberg said that in the April-June period (Q2), “we saw a more than 30 percent increase in the time that people spent engaging with Reels across Facebook and Instagram”.

Meta had announced during its Q1 earnings call that Reels made up more than 20 percent of the time on its platform.

“Our work on ads monetization efficiency for Reels is actually making faster progress than we’d expected. The bottom line is I think we’re on track here and we just need to push through this one,” he told analysts during the company’s quarterly earnings call late on Wednesday.

The company saw a 15 percent increase in watch time in the Reels video player on Facebook alone.

“In Instagram, we see that Reels makes up more than half of content reshared into messages,” Zuckerberg said.

He said that the near-term challenge is the growth of short-form video.

“Reels doesn’t yet monetize at the same rate as Feed or Stories. So in the near term, the faster that Reels grows, the more revenue that actually displaces from higher monetizing surfaces,” the Meta CEO added.

Meta launched ads and Reels last year and it is growing quickly “we see it as an area where there is significant potential for growth in the future,” said outgoing COO Sheryl Sandberg.

“Our focus right now with Reels is ramping up ad load, improving performance, and making sure the ads are easy for advertisers to create,” she noted.

The company is also using AI to better understand the content being published in Reels, so “users can connect to the content that is most relevant to them and marketers can also show more relevant ads”.

Largest pink diamond in 300 years discovered in Angola

0

A rare 170-carat pink diamond, weighing 34 grams, thought to be the largest in the last 300 years, has been discovered in Angola.

The pink stone has been named the “Lulo Rose”, after the mine in Angola where it was found.

It will be sold later this year through an international tender to be conducted by Angolan state-owned diamond trading firm Sodium, reports Xinhua news agency.

This is the fifth largest diamond from a total of 27 diamonds with more than 100 carats extracted to date in the Lulo mining project.

In 2016, the operation yielded the largest ever diamond recovered in Angola, a 404-carat white stone later named the “4th February Stone”.

The country’s Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino Azevedo said the discovery of the pink diamond continues to showcase Angola as an important player on the world stage for diamond mining and demonstrates the potential and rewards for commitment and investment in the country’s growing diamond mining industry.

Pink diamonds are extremely rare, but the same physical attributes that make the stones scarce also make them very tough, and not easy to work into shapes.

The largest known pink diamond is the Daria-i-Noor, discovered in India, which experts believe was cut from an even larger stone.

The largest rough diamond of any color ever recorded is the Cullinan diamond, found in South Africa in 1905.

Weighing 3,107 carats, more than half a kilogram, it was cut into 105 different stones.

The largest of these, the Cullinan I, is the biggest clear-cut diamond in the world and forms part of the UK Crown Jewels.

Trouble in Tollywood: Telugu producers mull halting movie shoots from Aug 1

0

Just when Telugu films were making waves by breaking one record after another, trouble seems to be brewing in Tollywood.

The Active Telugu Film Producers Guild (ATFPG) has decided to halt film shoots from August 1 till the industry is able to resolve issues such as star fees and cinema ticket prices.

The move has serious business implications because, as Elara Capital’s Kamal Taurani notes, Telugu cinema brings 12-15 percent to the national box office kitty, and the two Telugu states Andhra Pradesh and Telangana contribute 3 percent and 21 percent, respectively, to the revenues of the major multiplexes, notably PVR and INOX.

Additionally, regional dubbed films, as established by the success of ‘Pushpa’, ‘RRR’ and ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, going forward, are expected to contribute 15-20 percent of the Hindi film industry’s box-office revenues. In the first quarter of FY 2022-23, they contributed up to 55 percent of the Hindi industry earnings, according to Taurani.

The Producers Guild statement announcing the strike said: “Post-pandemic, with the changing revenue situation and increasing costs, it has become important for producers to discuss the issues we are facing as a community of filmmakers.”

The statement added: “It is our responsibility to better our ecosystem and ensure that we are releasing our films in a healthy environment. In this regard, all producer members of the Guild have voluntarily decided to withhold shootings from August 1, 2022, and to sit in discussions until we find a workable resolution.”

The producers say their business has been affected for three reasons:

1. The fees of the stars are too high to ensure a decent return on investment;

2. The reduced four-week window between the theatrical and OTT releases of films is not practical it would be conducive to trade if big-budget films continue to have an eight-week window and the ones with small to medium budgets could opt for four weeks;

3. Cinema ticket prices this is a problem unique to the Telugu-speaking states and cannot be economically unviable; instead, these too could be organized into three slabs for small-, medium- and big-budget films.

The strike, according to the Guild, will continue as long as these issues remain unresolved.
