Ranbir explains his four-year hiatus at ‘Shamshera’ promo in Delhi

0

The Capital’s cinema buffs got to see both Sanjay Dutt and the man who played him on the big screen, Ranbir Kapoor, on Monday evening when the cast of Karan Malhotra’s ‘Shamshera’ came on a promotional tour to the city.

Explaining his absence from the big screen since the Sanjay Dutt biopic ‘Sanju’ was released in 2018, Ranbir said: “After ‘Sanju’, I was working on ‘Shamshera’ and ‘Brahmastra’. These two big-budget movies took time and then my dad was unwell and a pandemic happened.”

Ranbir and his co-star Vaani Kapoor also talked about shooting in the mud and how tough it was to get rid of it.

And Malhotra mentioned shooting the movie in Ladakh: “There were about 200 to 300 people who were shooting at the outdoor location and about 60 horses that we brought in from outside as you don’t get large horses in Ladakh. You only get mules.”

Ranbir added that he had not done a movie on this scale and in this genre, so it needed a lot of conviction.

Vaani then talked about the most challenging part and said: “Certain emotional scenes were quite tough, but I remember more of the fun part.”

Ranbir also recalled his father and late actor Rishi Kapoor’s reaction when he signed the movie.

He said: “My father worked with Karan in ‘Agneepath’ and that film brought a lot of fame to my father. He was very happy with the impact of the film. When I signed this film, he was very happy. He always used to complain that my film choices were very poor and so he was very excited when I signed ‘Shamshera’.”

Dutt added, sounding somewhat tutored: “Every project is a learning experience for me and I learned a lot while working in ‘Shamshera’.”

Ranbir said, more spontaneously, that the action part was very challenging and the climax, which the unit shot in the last 15 days, was very tough.

Vaani concluded the evening, saying that the song ‘Kaale Naina’ was just to tease the audience to watch the movie. The actors also put up a special performance for the fans at a mall in southwest Delhi.

Produced by Aditya Chopra under the Yash Raj Films banner and directed by Karan Malhotra, the film features Ranbir Kapoor in a double role with Sanjay Dutt as the antagonist alongside Vaani Kapoor, Ronit Roy, Saurabh Shukla, and Ashutosh Rana. It will be released in theatres on July 22.

Ranbir-Alia’s ‘Kesariya’ full version sparks a meme fest

0

The makers of the Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt-starrer Brahmastra’ heard the pleas of music lovers and released the full version of the ‘Kesariya’ song from the film recently. Earlier, only a part of the song was released in April ahead of the wedding of Alia and Ranbir.

However, the song has caught the netizens’ attention for all the wrong reasons.

The listeners are perplexed at the use of the ‘love story phrase in the song, which sticks out like a sore thumb.

What compounds the audience’s odd listening experience is the fact that the lines have been penned by none other than Amitabh Bhattacharya, the man who is known for his knack for writing unusual lyrics, his songs like ‘Pardesi’, ‘Mast Magan’, ‘Babaji Ki Bootie, ‘Ullu Ka Pattha’, ‘Kalank Title Track and several others serve as testimony to his lyrical prowess and genius.

But this time the audience isn’t too pleased with what Bhattacharya has doled out. As soon as the song hit the airwaves, it sparked a meme fest on Instagram and Twitter with many members pointing out the visible difference before and after the mouthing of ‘love story.

One user wrote, “Only reason ppl (people) saying they are enjoying south versions of ‘Kesariya’ more is because they don’t understand a single word of it. What if those versions of songs have cringe lyrics too? (sic).”

One user posted the famous picture of Jason Momoa sneaking up on Henry Cavill from the ‘Suicide Squad’ premier. The user tagged Henry as himself implying that they’re enjoying listening to the song while the ‘love story part (Jason Momoa) sneaks up on them to spoil the experience.

‘Brahmastra’ directed by Ayan Mukerji, is set to drop in theatres on September 9, 2022.

‘Shamshera’ director: Fortunate to have worked with Chintu uncle, Ranbir; they are different yet similar

0

Filmmaker Karan Malhotra, who has worked with late veteran star Rishi Kapoor in ‘Agneepath’ and his actor son in the upcoming film ‘Shamshera’, feels fortunate to work with the father-son duo and revealed that they are different yet very similar.

Karan says: “I am fortunate to have worked with both Chintu’s uncle and Ranbir, they are so different yet so similar. While with Chintu’s uncle we would argue, fight and have multiple discussions on the character arc of Rauf Lala.”

“He always gave me immense respect and never treated me like a first-time director. The challenges we threw at each other only made the character bigger. I miss the madness on set with him every single day.”

He shared: “Ranbir and Chintu’s uncle is very different but their work ethics are similar. They both surrender to the vision of the director. Rishi Kapoor had always been vocal about his wish to see Ranbir do a hardcore commercial film.”

“So with that thought, working with Ranbir on Shamshera has been extremely delightful. He has given the character his all and I now can’t wait for audiences to witness the magic that he has created on-screen.”

The story of ‘Shamshera’ is set in the fictitious city of Kaza, where a warrior tribe is imprisoned, enslaved, and tortured by a ruthless authoritarian general Shuddh Singh.

Sanjay Dutt plays Ranbir’s arch-enemy in this huge casting coup and his showdown with Ranbir will be something to watch out for as they will ferociously go after each other with no mercy.

Directed by Karan Malhotra, this action extravaganza has been produced by Aditya Chopra and is set to release in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu on July 22.

I am an experienced cricketer, but I am a young captain: Jos Buttler

0

After losing the ODI series decider to India at Old Trafford, England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler has called for time to develop experience as a captain. In defense of 259, England had India reduced to 72-4 in 16.2 overs.

But Rishabh Pant (125 not out) and Hardik Pandya (71) shared a crucial 133-run stand for the fifth wicket to guide India to a 2-1 series win.

Buttler, who was England’s top-scorer in their total of 259 with 60 off 80 balls, could have stumped Pant off Moeen Ali on 18. But the chance was missed and Pant made them pay by smacking 16 fours and two sixes to make his first ODI century.

“We just haven’t batted our best (in the summer so far). We just have to play better for longer. I missed a chance today but I don’t think that’s got anything to do with the captaincy. I’m an experienced cricketer but I’m a young captain, so I think it’s (about) not worrying too much about it. I’ve got lots to learn, lots to try and work out. I need time and experience to do that,” said Buttler after the match.

Buttler further rued the chances England missed to send Pant and Pandya back to the pavilion and credited the duo for sealing the win for India in a controlled fashion.

“If you give good players a chance they’ll probably hurt you. We probably had half a chance, maybe, with Hardik Pandya down to the fine leg as well and if we took those chances we’d probably have had quite a good hold in the game with quite a long tail for India.

“But (with) the score we put up, we were going to have to take all our chances to have a chance of winning. It was fantastic to get those early wickets and we created two chances for the guys who really took the game away from us, so I think that’s where we lost the game.”

Tall left-arm quick Reece Topley tore through India’s top order again at Old Trafford, taking out Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli in the first 10 overs.

Buttler was delighted to see Topley contribute heavily for England despite conceding that his workload will have to be managed carefully.

“He (Topley) has been brilliant. He’s got his opportunity, he obviously put in a man-of-the-match performance in the T20 in Trent Bridge as well, so delighted to see him doing so well. I think we were trying to search for ways to create wickets. I think it’s been a pretty tough schedule as well – I think Reece is just creaking a little bit, so I think we might have to look after him as we probably will all our players.”

Video of Rishabh Pant gifting champagne bottle to former head coach Ravi Shastri goes viral

0

India’s wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who was named the “Man of the Match” for his sublime 113-ball 125 in India’s five-wicket victory in the ODI series decider at Old Trafford, gifted his champagne bottle to former India head coach Ravi Shastri after the end of the presentation ceremony.

In a video shared by a fan on Youtube, it can be seen that Pant, after India was awarded the trophy for the ODI series, walked toward Shastri. The duo shook hands and hugged each other. After speaking to each other, Pant gifted his champagne bottle to Shastri.

With the crowd cheering in the background, Shastri and Pant then acknowledged the crowd before the latter ran towards the Indian team and the former head coach went towards the Sky Sports broadcast truck to talk about India’s victory at Manchester.

In the chase of 260, India was in a spot of bother at 72 for four in 16.2 overs. But Pant and Hardik Pandya (71 off 55 and 4/24) shared a 133-run stand for the fifth wicket as the tourists completed the chase with 47 balls to spare.

While Pandya reached his fifty-first in 43 balls, Pant got to his half-century off 71 deliveries. Though Pandya fell, later on, Pant reached his maiden ODI century in 106 balls, with his second fifty coming off just 35 deliveries.

After reaching his century, Pant smacked left-arm pacer David Willey for five fours in as many balls. Pant then fittingly finished off the chase in style with a reverse sweep for a match-winning boundary off Joe Root.

“Hopefully I will remember this for the rest of my life, but when I was in I was not thinking about anything.” I was just trying to focus on one ball at a time. You always aspire to play like this when your team is in trouble. “The more experience you get, the more you improve,” were Pant’s words after the match.

Sri Lanka reduces fuel prices amid shortage

0

Sri Lanka’s state-owned Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) and the Lanka Indian Oil Corporation (LIOC) have reduced the retail price of fuel.

The two state-owned oil companies reduced the retail price of fuel from Sunday evening, Xinhua news agency reported.

The price of a litre of Octane 92 petrol will be reduced by Rs 20, and the new retail price will be Rs 450 ($1.25).

Octane 95 petrol will sell for Rs 540 per litre, down by Rs 10.

The diesel price will be slashed by Rs 20 per litre, thus the new price will be Rs 440, and the price for super diesel will be Rs 510 a litre following a reduction of Rs 10.

The Ministry of Power and Energy also introduced a new digital system to systematise the distribution of fuel from July 21. Both the CPC and the LIOC will take part in the scheme.

Sri Lanka has been facing a crippling fuel shortage since February.

In late June, CPC suspended distributing fuel for private vehicles.

CPC will start fuel distribution from July 21, following the arrival of petrol and diesel shipments. (1$ equals 361 Sri Lankan rupees).

Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck wed in Vegas

0

Hollywood stars Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck have finally tied the knot in Las Vegas.

According to a marriage license on the online records for Clark County, Nevada, the couple’s official marriage was filed on Saturday, reports Variety.

The record is in both of their legal names: Benjamin Geza Affleck and Jennifer Lynn Lopez. Significantly, the record also indicates that Jennifer Lopez took Affleck as her legal last name.

Lopez confirmed her and Affleck’s nuptials through a new edition of her newsletter “On the JLo” later Sunday afternoon.

“We did it!” Lopez wrote, alongside a black-and-white photograph of her holding a bouquet and Affleck kissing her cheek.

“Last night we flew to Vegas, stood in line for a license with four other couples, all making the same journey to the wedding capital of the world,” Lopez shared.

The singer went on to say that they “Barely made it to the Little White Wedding chapel by midnight,” and concluded her newsletter with sweet enthusiasm writing, “Stick around long enough and maybe you’ll find the best moment of your life in a drive through in Las Vegas at twelve-thirty in the morning in the tunnel of love drive through, with your kids and the one you’ll spend forever with.

Love is a great thing, maybe the best of things “and worth waiting for”. She signed the letter as “Mrs. Jennifer Lynn Affleck.”

The news of Lopez and Affleck’s engagement first broke in April. In an edition of ‘On the JLo’, the singer and actress shared a teary-eyed video for her fans while sporting a green diamond engagement ring.

She wrote: “Saturday night while at my favorite place on earth (in a bubble bath), my beautiful love got on one knee and proposed.”

Lopez, 52, and Affleck, 49, were among the most prominent celebrity couples in the early 2000s. They made two films together. The first was 2003’s “Gigli” which didn’t exactly light the box office on fire.

By the time the Kevin Smith-directed Jersey Girl’ hit theaters in 2004, the couple had already announced that they’d broken up. The couple was engaged for a lengthy stretch of time, though they never officially tied the knot.

However, Lopez and Affleck reunited roughly one year ago and have been seemingly inseparable ever since.

During their time apart, Lopez married singer-songwriter, Marc Anthony, in 2004 before divorcing him in 2014. Affleck married actress Jennifer Garner in 2005. The two divorced in 2018.

In their professional lives, Affleck won an Oscar for producing best picture ‘Argo’ and Lopez grew her fortune touring, acting in movies, and recording music.

A year ago, they found themselves back together, dating in the public eye, but without the same scrutiny from the celebrity press, which has evolved and becomes less critical since the turn of the century.

Pant hopes to remember his match-winning maiden ODI century for rest of his life

0

After playing a historic knock in India’s thumping five-wicket win over England in the 3rd ODI, the explosive wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant said that he wants to remember his match-winning maiden century in 50-over cricket for the rest of his life.

Pant’s unbeaten 125 off 113 deliveries and the impressive all-around show (71 runs and 4 wickets) led India to a convincing five-wicket win over England in the third and final ODI and a 2-1 win in the three-match series at Old Trafford oHardik Pandyan Sunday.

“Hopefully, I remember (this knock) for the rest of my life. I was focusing on one ball at a time when I was batting. When your team is under pressure and your bat like that… something I aspire to do,” Pant said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Pant, who got the Player of the Match award for his batting heroics, said that he enjoys playing in England.

“I always enjoy playing in England, and at the same time enjoy the atmosphere and the situation. The more you play the more experience you gain,” he said.

The 24-year-old also credited the Indian bowlers for doing a fantastic job as England were bundled out for 259 on a batting-friendly pitch in Manchester.

“Nothing to take away from the bowlers, it was a good wicket to bat on and the bowlers did a commendable job to restrict them, they were brilliant not only today but in the entire series,” he said.

Tibetan groups protest against China

0

Several Tibetan organizations, including non-governmental organizations, political parties, student groups, etc., held massive protests in Himachal Pradesh’s Dharamsala against China’s repressive policies and illegal occupation of Tibet.

The Tibetan people in the hill state highlighted various incidents of atrocities and oppression by the Chinese government on the people of Tibet through various programs.

Tibetan Women’s Association (a women’s group based in McLeodGanj, Dharamsala), National Democratic Party of Tibet (a major political party in the Tibetan government in exile), Gu Chu Sum Movement Association of Tibet (non-governmental organization in Himachal Pradesh), and Students for a Free Tibet (global grassroots network of students and activists working in solidarity with the Tibetan people) held large-scale demonstrations against Chinese atrocities against the people of Tibet at the Main Square in Mcleodganj, Dharamsala on Sunday.

The International Justice Day was also celebrated on Sunday (June 17) by the Tibetan community living in India, inspiring people across the world to unite together for ensuring justice.

International Justice Day celebrates the importance of ensuring accountability concerning some of the most heinous crimes such as genocide, murder, forced detention, unjustified jail imprisonment, punishing the perpetrators of crime, and bringing justice to the people.

Tsering Dolma, Vice-President of the Tibetan Women’s Association, said it was important to celebrate International Justice Day by acknowledging the human rights violations inside Tibet by the dictatorial Chinese Communist Party.

She added that during the 20th century, the Chinese Communist Party began its invasion of Tibet in 1949 by annexing Tibet’s Amdo and Kham provinces.

After China illegally occupied the entire Tibet in 1959, martial law was imposed to crack down on the Tibetan resistance movement.

As many as six million people died in Tibet due to the invasion and illegal occupation by China, and many Tibetans were also forced to leave their homeland and live in exile, Dolma said.

The people of Tibet were denied justice and are fighting against atrocities committed against them violating basic human rights and freedom, she added.

The evidence of the human rights situation within Tibet is clear when His Holiness, the Panchen Lama, was forcibly abducted by the Chinese government at the age of six, Dolma said.

She added that due to the torture, cruelty, and ill-treatment during his detention by the Chinese government, prominent Tibetan monk Jigme Gyatso had been unrecoverably ill since his release in 2016 after serving a five-year prison sentence when he pleaded guilty to “inciting separatism” in Tibet. Facing further health complications, Gyatso was hospitalized in Xiling in May this year and passed away on July 2.

On June 23, 2022, the Chinese police arrested a Tibetan woman Zumkar, for possessing a picture of the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama in her house in Tibet.

She said that many Tibetan people have lost their lives under harsh persecution, torture, imprisonment, and extrajudicial killings due to Chinese oppression. China’s dictatorial policies have created a crisis in Tibet and provoked an unprecedented wave of self-immolations by monks, nuns, and Tibetan people.

Tsering Dolma added that over the past decade, Chinese authorities have systematically closed local schools in Tibet and replaced them with colonized boarding schools, including those for primary-age children.

By deliberately separating Tibetan children from their families and culture and keeping them in government boarding schools, Chinese authorities are using one of the most heinous means of colonialism to attack Tibetan identity.

Rescue, relief in full swing in flood-hit Bhadrachalam

Rescue and relief operations in the flood-hit Bhadradri Kothagudem district of Telangana were in full swing while the Godavari river continued to flow above the danger mark on Saturday.

Bhadrachalam town and about 200 villages downstream remained inundated and cut off as the river recorded its highest flood level in three decades. Over 20,000 people have already been evacuated to relief camps.

With continuing inflows, the water level in the Godavari at Bhadrachalam dam stood at 70.50 feet. According to district collector D. Anudeep, 24,18,755 cusecs of water are being let out downstream. The highest flood level was 71.30 feet at 4 a.m. and it came down to 70.50. However, it is still much above the third floor level of 53 feet.

Several residential areas in the temple town and about 200 villages in Cherla, Dummugudem, Aswapuram, Burgampadu, Pinapaka, and Manugur manuals (blocks) along the course of the river were marooned and cut off.

Bhadrachalam remained cut-off for the third day with the closure of the famous Godavari bridge for vehicular traffic. Vehicular traffic was stopped on Thursday on this bridge which links the temple town to neighboring Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha.

This is the second time in the history of this bridge that it has been closed due to floods. The last time it was closed for traffic was in 1986 when the water level had reached 75.6 feet.

Five teams of the Indian Army have also joined the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in rescue and relief operations.

A total of 101 men of whom 68 from the Infantry, 10 medical professionals, and 23 engineers reached Bhadrachalam. The Army has also positioned a helicopter for rescue operations.

The Tourism department has dispatched four special boats along with men to Bhadradri district to assist in rescue and relief operations. An AFire de

apartment has also dispatched seven boats along with 210 life jackets and life boys.

The government has deputed a senior officer, the MD of Singareni Collieries N. Sridhar as a special officer to monitor the relief operations in the district.

The infrastructure available with the Singareni Collieries has been pressed into service at Bhadrachalam for flood relief operations.

Meanwhile, the Godavari level is receding at Kaleshwaram in the Jayashankar Bhupalapally district. With rains abating and inflows from upstream receding, the water level has reduced at Kaleshwaram.

Godavari level at the project had reached a record level due to incessant rains for over a week in Telangana and upstream areas in neighboring Maharashtra.

With the water level receding at Sri Ram Sagar Project (SRSP) in the Nizamabad district, the irrigation department closed down all the flood gates.

Selling coal cheaply to Pak paints Taliban as Pakistani puppets

0

Cash-strapped and cut off from international aid, the Taliban-led government is tapping into Afghanistan’s natural resources to boost revenue, media reports said.

Ever since the Taliban toppled the Western-backed government in Kabul and seized power in August 2021, the export of and customs duties from coal have become a key source of revenue for the militant group, RFE/RL reported.

Afghanistan has significant deposits of coal. Out of the country’s 80 coal mines, 17 are operational, with most located in central and northern Afghanistan. Much of the coal is being trucked to neighboring Pakistan, which is facing a severe energy crisis, the report said.

The revelation sparked a public outcry in Afghanistan, where many have long viewed the Taliban as a Pakistani proxy. Islamabad has been the militants’ key foreign sponsor for decades and sheltered the Islamist group during its nearly 20-year insurgency against Afghan and international forces.

“The Taliban are sensitive to how Afghans domestically perceive them,” said Hameed Hakimi, an Afghanistan expert at the Washington-based Atlantic Council.

“Therefore, selling coal cheaply to Pakistan would inevitably paint them as Pakistani puppets,” he said, RFE/RL reported.

Ultimately, Hakimi said, the price hike has “a lot to do with the Taliban’s desperate need to raise funds and maximize revenues”.

The price hike came soon after Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced plans to import heavily discounted coal from Afghanistan using Pakistani rupees to save dwindling foreign reserves, RFE/RL reported.

Pakistan is reportedly re-evaluating its purchase of Afghan coal following the Taliban’s decision to more than double prices for the commodity. Chinese energy companies in Pakistan have threatened to stop importing Afghan coal.

But exports have hit snags recently after the Taliban hiked prices, in a move that has put off importers. Competing claims over coal mines have also triggered Taliban infighting, RFE/RL reported.

Foreign trade has fallen off dramatically since the Taliban seized power, and the international assistance that once propped up the Afghan economy has evaporated, leaving the Taliban to fund its government on its own. No country has recognized the Taliban-led government, which has been hit by international sanctions.

The Taliban has relied heavily on tax collection and the increased export of valuable natural resources like coal to generate revenue.

In May, the militants increased coal exports to Pakistan, aiming to generate more revenue from Afghanistan’s mining sector and capitalize on record prices for coal. Global supplies have fallen due to Russia’s war against Ukraine and top exporters Indonesia’s ban on exports.

The Taliban reportedly collected around $40 in million in customs duties from coal exported to Pakistan in the first six months of this year. The hard-line Islamists have also boosted coal exports to 1.8 million tonnes in the past year, a rise of 16 percent. The Taliban has been exporting an estimated 12,000 to 14,000 tonnes of coal, mostly to Pakistan, each day, RFE/RL reported.

But the Taliban’s plan to use Afghanistan’s easy-to-extract coal deposits to generate much-needed revenue has hit roadblocks in recent weeks.

Last month, the Taliban increased its taxes on coal exports from 20 percent to 30 percent. In early July, the Taliban’s Finance Ministry said it also lifted prices for coal from $90 per tonne to $200 per tonne. On July 15, coal was trading at over $300 per tonne on international markets.

Woody Harrelson in talks to join cast of yacht rock musical ‘Sailing’

Three-time Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson, who received a positive response for his work as Cletus Kasady in ‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’, is currently in negotiations to join Lionsgate’s ensemble 1970s jukebox musical ‘Sailing’ from ‘Rock of Ages’ creator Chris D’Arienzo, reports’Deadline.

The project is billed as a bunch of musicians in the late 1970s as they discover the smooth sounds and smoother lifestyle that is yacht rock, the soft rock music genre that took over FM radio during that era.

D’Arienzo, according to Deadline, sold the pitch with Jeremy Plager, who will develop and produce with MegaMix (Jonathan Levine and Gillian Bohrer) and Harrelson.

“We’re thrilled to be working with Jeremy, Jonathan, Gillian, Chris, and Woody, and we’re confident that it will not only have a phenomenal soundtrack, but it will also put you in a summertime mood.”

Levine and Bohrer’s Megamix has a first-look film and television deal with Lionsgate; and they’re behind the studio’s sequel to Dirty Dancing, with Jennifer Grey reprising her role as Baby Houseman. They also have Mick Fleetwood’s musical drama, ’13 Songs’, in development at Fox.

Since then, in the course of formulating the draft constitution, the CoA has spoken to all the AIFF’s stakeholders, including state associations, FIFA, Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Indian Super League (ISL), and I-League clubs, and considered suggestions forwarded by them.

“After a lot of deliberation, we have finally narrowed down on a draft constitution that would put the AIFF in line with the National Sports Code, as well as help it function efficiently as a Member Association of the FIFA and the AFC,” said Quraishi.

“We are confident that with this set of changes, the Federation will now be in a good position to guide Indian football further ahead.”

Justice Dave said, “We have taken into consideration all the stakeholders involved in Indian football and their respective valued points of view over the newly-framed constitution. We also received some suggestions from football lovers across the country and studied them minutely and seriously. I wish all parties involved the very best as we all try to take the beautiful game forward in India.”

Former India goalkeeper and captain Bhaskar Ganguly commended everyone on formulating the draft constitution on such short notice. “The amount of work that has gone into the draft constitution is indeed commendable and I sincerely thank everyone involved for its completion. We hope that with these new changes, football in our country will keep growing further than ever before.”

Babar Azam reveals his tweet for Virat Kohli was to give him ‘just some support’

Pakistan captain Babar Azam had won a lot of hearts on social media after he tweeted his support for talismanic India batter Virat Kohli, who is going through a lean patch for nearly three years.

On Thursday, shortly after Kohli was dismissed for 16 in the second ODI against England at Lord’s, Babar put out a tweet with a picture of him and Kohli from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup last year, with the caption reading as “this too shall pass. Stay strong #viratkohli.”

Soon after the tweet was released, many cricket fans started praising Babar for supporting Kohli. On the eve of Pakistan’s first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, in a press conference, Babar revealed his reasons behind tweeting in favor of Kohli.

“Definitely. See, as a player myself, I know you can go through such a phase (out of form). I also know what a player goes through in such a phase and how can one come out of it. In those times, you need support.

“As a player, I just tweeted thinking that it will give just some support. He is one of the best players. He is playing a lot (of cricket) and he knows how to come out of these situations. It takes time, if you back players, it will be really good.”

Kohli has not hit a century in international cricket since 2019. After missing the first ODI against England at The Oval due to a groin strain, Kohli made just 16 in the second match at Lord’s, which India lost by 100 runs.

It meant that the right-hander has been without a century in 77 consecutive international innings. Before the ODI series, Kohli had scores of 1 and 11 in the second and third T20Is and made 11 and 20 in the rescheduled fifth Test at Edgbaston.

The ODI series decider match at Manchester on Sunday will provide Kohli a chance to get a big knock under his belt. After the end of the England tour, Kohli will not be a part of India’s white-ball tour of the West Indies, with his name missing from the three-match ODI series squad and five-match T20I series squad in the Caribbean.
