Car import case: Tamil superstar Vijay gets relief from Madras HC

0

The Madras High Court on Friday gave a major relief to Tamil superstar Vijay in a case related to his import of a luxury BMW car from the US, ruling that he would be liable to pay the penalty for delayed payment of entry tax only from January 29, 2019, to December 2021 and not from 2005.

A bench of Justice R. Suresh Kumar said that Vijay was liable to pay an entry tax as a division bench of the court had, on January 29, 2019, held that the state government was entitled to levy entry tax.

The bench, however, said that the Commercial Taxes Department should not have demanded a huge amount of Rs 30.23 lakh towards penalty, by levying it in 2005 and that the fine may be levied from January 29, 2019.

Vijay had approached the court in January 2022 and challenged a notice issued by the Commercial Taxes Department, on September 17, 2021, asking him to pay Rs 7.98 lakh as entry tax along with a penalty of Rs 30.23 lakh.

The advocate for the superstar said that he has already paid a tax liability of Rs 7.98 lakh in December 2021 and that he was challenging the penalty alone. He said that he had then imported the BMW as there were no dealers for the luxury car in Chennai those days.

The actor had also pleaded to the court to cancel the demand notice and the recovery notice.

Samantha’s absence from social media worries her fans

0

Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s recent social media engagement has been nearly non-existent. The bubbly actress, who typically keeps her fans engaged with her pictures, has been dormant on various social media platforms.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu was even active on social media during her lowest point when she announced her split from Naga Chaitanya. Samantha’s social media activity has decreased, and supporters are concerned about her mental health.

While some admirers feel Samantha Ruth Prabhu appears to be on a social media detox, others believe she is simply not in the mood to communicate with any of her social media followers for personal reasons.

Samantha’s social media followers remarked, “It’s strange that Samantha hasn’t been uploading her usual content on Instagram. She usually includes at least one good quote or philosophical statement. There are no images, quotes, or even brand posts. Hey! What’s the matter, Sam? “.

“Samantha is probably keeping a low-key presence for a few days so she can come back with an interesting announcement about her next major thing,” a fan said. “I sincerely hope she is okay. Sam, at least, publishes her training videos or hilarious dog posts “, another fan stated.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s next film will be ‘Shakuntalam,’ directed by Guna Sekhar of ‘Rudramadevi.’ In the mythological drama, she will play the majestic queen Shakuntala Devi.

The ‘Majili’ actress will also play the title character in ‘Yashoda,’ a women-centric sci-fi thriller.

Upasana Konidela asks media to stop talking about her ties with hubby Ram Charan

0

The drama surrounding ‘RRR’ actor Ram Charan and his wife’s personal issues continue. Upasana Konidela, in a response to a media publisher, expressed her dissatisfaction with them, claiming that they misconstrued her remarks about Ram Charan and her not having kids.

During a recent conversation with Sadguru, Upasana expressed her reservations about having children. She revealed her thought process and how others react to it; Sadguru also spoke about it. However, some media outlets have entirely misinterpreted the context of Upasana’s comments.

It is assumed that Upasana chose not to have children due to population control concerns. One Instagram post shared the same report, adding that Ram Charan is also opposed to having children because it would distract him from his aim of entertaining fans through films.

However, Upasana clarified the situation. She captioned a screenshot of the news on her Instagram account, “Omg, this is not true. Please view the entire video and read my copy.”

Ram Charan and Upasana have been married for ten years and have separate life goals. Despite the fact that it was their personal matter, the media repeatedly questioned the couple about having children. Upasana has spoken out on multiple occasions about this. She was always clear that she would have children only when they, as a couple were ready.

South vs Bollywood: Hindi viewing audience are alive, says Arjun Kapoor

0

At a time when regional cinema such as the ‘Baahubali’ franchise and more recently ‘Pushpa: The

Rise’, the ‘KGF franchise, and ‘RRR’ are leaving Hindi films far behind in the competition at the box office, Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor asserts that the Hindi viewing audience still exists as these films along with Hollywood movies are dubbed in Hindi.

Asked him what or where is Hindi cinema going wrong as Bollywood movies are not making it as big as films from the south, Arjun in a conversation with IANS said: “The films that are being dubbed and are coming out in Hindi at the end of the day that is a big sign. English films that come get dubbed… That is a big sign that the Hindi viewing audience is existing. They are alive.”

He minces no words when he says it is an “assessment that some of the Hindi films have not panned”

Arjun added: “But you have to realize these films started to say in 2019 and 2020 before the pandemic hit… A lot of them have been released now. We are also learning… It’s a phase where there is a new audience, and taste palate that has come through. We are also adapting and learning. We have to go back to basics and start appreciating our mainstream audiences…”

“We somewhere got lost because we were appealing to the multiplex audiences pre-pandemic and the digital audience post-pandemic.”

The 37-year-old, who started as an assistant director in the 2003 film ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho, shared that the “mainstream audience will always be the bread and butter of this industry.”

“There is no harm sometimes to taking a step back to take two steps forward because you can assess, observe and learn. Unfortunately that the films did not work the way they should have and in the next 6-8 months we have to be very patient… because there is a phase and a cycle…”

He added: “If we had managed to understand the multiplex audience and delivered films to them pre-pandemic then today the belief has to be to learn and adapt to the new age belief, through the process of the audiences and again start delivering… but patience is needed and we all need to be students and learn from the audience that is our biggest teacher.”

Arjun currently awaits the release of his upcoming film ‘Ek Villain Returns’. He also has ‘Kuttey’ and ‘The LadyKiller’.

The show, Superstar Singer 2’, which is judged by Himesh Reshammiya, Alka Yagnik, and Javed Ali airs on Sony Entertainment Television.

Over 33K people evacuated; loss of life, property brought under control: Gujarat CM

0

As heavy rains lashed Gujarat for the first 15 days of the monsoon season, State Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has said that with the timely decisions taken by his government more than 33,000 people have been evacuated and the loss of life and property has been brought under control.

Patel on Thursday said, “There are currently 18 NDRF teams and 18 SDRF platoons operating across the state. Another eight teams are in reserve.”

The damage to property is being estimated by surveying the area affected by the rains.

Due to heavy rains, the power supply was disrupted in nearly 5,150 villages, of which electricity in 5,110 villages has been restored.

Farmers have sown Kharif crops on more than 44,36,980 hectares of land, which is more than 50 percent area cultivated for Kharif crops.

Most of the dams are nearly 50 percent filled with rainwater. For example, the Sardar Sarovar dam is 48 percent filled more than its capacity with rainwater.

The average rainfall recorded in 14 days of July this year is more than double that during the same time period in 2021.

In 2021, the average rainfall was 155.92 mm but it is 397.02 mm in 2022 while the average rainfall in the state is 850 mm.

Nearly 50 percent of the total rainfall for July has been recorded in 20 talukas from July 8-11. Each taluka has received more than 50 mm of rainfall till now. For the first time in this decade, Gujarat received such a huge amount of rainfall in July.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Rajendra Trivedi, while briefing the media about a review meeting over the rainfall situation in the state at Gandhinagar, said that due to heavy rains, six persons were rescued by a chopper with the help of the State Coast Guard. However, rescue operations are still underway to airlift people.

He added that a total of 39,177 people have been relocated to safer places by the state administration, of which a total of 17,394 people have returned home while 21,243 people have taken shelter at various places and are being provided adequate arrangements, including food by the administration.

A total of 570 civilians trapped in water have been rescued while eight districts in the state are still on red alert, he said.

Trivedi added that 43 deaths have been reported in the state since July 7, with the highest number of deaths due to lightning.

In addition, 477 animal deaths have also been reported. Out of 14,610 state transport bus routes operating in villages across the state, routes to 148 villages have been closed for safety reasons.

He said that due to incessant rain since July 7, a total of 126 houses have been completely damaged and 19 huts have been completely washed away. The rain-affected areas will be surveyed on a war footing and assistance will be provided for damaged houses and huts.

As many as 178 persons were rescued by the NDRF in Sambhoi village of Vadodara including 67 men, 76 women, and 35 children.

In Kutiana taluka of Porbandar district, Devdas village was flooded due to torrential rains since early Thursday morning. As a result, the farms were turned into islands and the locals were trying to dispose of the water themselves.

The Kharo dam of Batwa village overflowed on Thursday. As many as 14 roads in the Porbandar district have been closed due to heavy rains.

Heavy rains in Ranavav and Kutiana talukas flooded the towns. The Road and Building Department closed the roads and instructed the people not to pass through them due to the high flow of water on the roads.

Owing to the heavy rains, the District Collector in Valsad declared a holiday in schools, colleges, and anganwadis on Friday.

Ahmedabad received an average of one inch of rain on Thursday. Usmanpura, Vadaj, Ashram Road, Income Tax, Sabarmati, Chandkheda, Motera, Chandlodia, Nirnaynagar, and Ranip areas have received two inches of rain.

On the other hand, five women laborers were crushed when a wall collapsed near Dasheshwar farm near Ognaj. All of them were evacuated by the fire brigade team and sent to Sola Civil Hospital for treatment.

N.R. Vaghela, Police Inspector, Sola police station, said that the wall appeared to have collapsed primarily due to rain.

India’s lost opportunity in Lord’s ODI

0

With 15 months to go for the next ICC Cricket World Cup to be advantageously held in India, teams are at a stage of shaping their squads. A defeat at this point which was the case for India to England by 100 runs in the second of a three-match One-Day International series is not a disaster. A bad day at the office can easily be rectified in the decider at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Sunday. But lessons have to be learned from each encounter to consolidate preparations for the tournament that matters most in the ODI format.

Captain Rohit Sharma justified his decision to field first on the basis of there being residual moisture in the pitch and preferring to know how much to chase rather than setting one. He was not unsound tactically on the second count but was mistaken in thinking the wicket would be anything but bone dry. England is in the middle of an uncommon heatwave. Besides, it was cloudless and sunny throughout the England innings.

The parched conditions predictably assisted spin; and unsurprisingly, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal returned figures of four for 47, while Ravindra Jadeja, with his left-arm orthodox spin, was the most economical of the Indian bowlers.

On a slower surface compared to the track in the first meeting at The Oval, India’s quicker bowlers were steady rather than penetrative. Hardik Pandya’s availability to bowl has been a bonus on this tour for the Indians. His accurate line, with clever variations of length including throwing in bouncers at generally a brisk pace, fetched him two wickets, regardless of a dropped catch off his bowling.

England’s batsmen never quite broke loose. But run-a-ball 38 and 33 from Jonny Bairstow and Liam Livingstone kept the scoreboard ticking, while a top score of 47 from 64 balls from Moeen Ali, not to mention 41 from 47 by David Willey, registered a run rate of close to five and over-modest in the modern limited overs context. They were bowled out for 246.

As the day progressed, the after-office crowd filtered through the turnstiles to pack the stands to capacity. The Indian batting, though, failed to match the expectation. Neither Sharma nor his left-handed opening partner Shikhar Dhawan really got going. At the same, this created an opportunity for the middle order, which had been denied to them in the 10-wicket victory in the previous match.

The out-of-form Virat Kohli promised much with two handsome drives and an off-drive. But the misjudgment that has crept into his game appeared again as he nibbled at a delivery slanting away from him.

Briefly, the fifth-wicket partnership of Suryakumar Yadav and Pandya raised hopes, before the former played on. In short, an undaunting target in unchallenging batting conditions was missed because of an uncharacteristic batting failure. A conspicuous malaise is that of playing away from the body or doing so too early.

India announce squad for West Indies T20Is; Kohli, Bumrah, Chahal miss out (Ld)

0

India on Thursday announced an 18-man squad for the T20I series against West Indies, beginning on July 29 in Trinidad with big names — Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Yuzvendra Chahal missing out.

Kohli, who was out of the 1st ODI against England with a groin injury, has not been included for the T20Is in the Caribbean as well. However, BCCI in its official release hasn’t mentioned whether he has been rested or not picked due to injury. On the other hand, the names of pacer Bumrah and leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal are also missing from the squad.

The squad will be led by Rohit Sharma while KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav, who had missed the home series against South Africa due to respective injuries, have made their comeback. However, their inclusion in the squad is subject to fitness.

“The inclusion of KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav is subject to fitness,” a BCCI release said.

Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant, who have been rested from the ODI leg, will play the T20Is. The squad also sees the return of veteran off-spinner R Ashwin, who hasn’t featured in India’s T20I side since the home series against New Zealand last November.

After a long hiatus from the white ball group, Ashwin made a comeback in the T20I World Cup last year but has not been a regular fixture in the side since, with injuries also playing a part in his exclusion His return will boost up the spin department that also has the Kuldeep, Ravi Bishnoi, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja.

IPL sensation Umran Malik, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Sanju Samson, who were a part of India’s squad for the first T20I against England, don’t find a place in the squad. The selectors have rewarded left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh after his impressive debut, including him in the seam bowling department along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Avesh Khan, and Harshal Patel.

Having made his T20I debut in Ireland, Malik was also part of the recently concluded T20I series in England, which India won 2-1. In his lone outing in Nottingham, he conceded 1 for 56 off his four overs. On the other hand, took 2 for 18 in an impressive debut in the opening T20I, when he troubled England’s openers with the late swing.

As her biopic is ready to be released, Mithali Raj opens up on women’s cricket

Mithali Raj needs no introduction. From being former captain of India’s women’s cricket team to being the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket, she has a lot more to her credit. The legendary right-handed batswoman was in the capital for the promotion of Taapsee Pannu-starrer ‘Shabaash Mithu’, which is based on her life.

Taapsee is seen playing Mithali on screen. When Mithali came to know about a biopic being made on her, she couldn’t believe it for a second.

She told IANS in an interview: “Initially I thought they were just kidding. But later when the makers told me in detail I realized this is reality and they are looking into it.” Mithali added that after knowing about a biopic being made on her, she took it as a great opportunity.

“I also find it’s a great opportunity to get the journey of women’s cricket in our country. And it is also important in a way for people to know and understand when and what the hardships women athletes have to go through in our country with the support system and in the way society perceives the woman athlete.”

Mithali shared how she reacted when she came to know that Taapsee will be seen depicting her on screen.

“When I got to know that she’s (Taapsee) doing the role, I also did my homework. I’ve seen a couple of her films. She played hockey player so I knew that she doesn’t necessarily have to work much on fitness or to get the athlete’s body. But maybe the cricket part skill is something she probably would have to work a lot more on, but then after watching the trailers I should admit that she has really worked hard.”

Furthermore, Mithali talked about the changing scenario of women’s cricket and how it is gaining more prominence and getting its independent identity.

Mithali said: “I think to post the 2017 ODI World Cup, a lot has changed. We started slowly coming out of the shadows. Earlier the women’s T20 World Cup was also run in tandem with the men’s T20 World Cup. Right now it is a standalone tournament, slowly, the leagues are happening around the world. And I’m sure at some point, maybe by next year, we’ll have our own league.”

She also spoke about the way viewership has changed and how people are now more interested in watching women’s cricket.

“So, now women’s cricket is ready to stand on its own. And in terms of viewership and the way people turn up to watch our matches have also changed earlier, actually, like many knew that we were playing an international series, so the grounds of the stadiums would be empty. Now you know when it is marketed well and matches are televised there are a lot of people who are turning up to the stadium to watch us and a lot of young children are coming to watch our matches. I think it has definitely changed a lot and I’m sure it will change a lot more in the future too,” she concluded.

Directed by Srijit Mukherji and produced by Viacom18 Studios, ‘Shabaash Mithu’ stars Taapsee Pannu in the role of Mithali Raj. The film is set to release on July 15.
