Punjabi star Sargun Mehta makes her Bollywood debut with ‘Mission Cinderella’

0

Actress Sargun Mehta, who is already known in the Punjabi film industry and was recently seen in her home production ‘Saunkan Saunkne’, is all set to make her Bollywood debut soon.

The actress will be seen in a Bollywood film called ‘Mission Cinderella’, which stars Akshay Kumar.

“It’s very important to wait for the right role, no matter where you are stepping in, especially when you are stepping in a new medium because all together there is a new audience and they are,” she says.

“They are going to perceive you and look at you in a certain way. Even the industry has formed a perception of who you are. When I was choosing it, I didn’t want to stand aside and be not talked about. Whether good or bad, but no matter what it is at least there is something to talk about.”

Bollywood is quite different from the Punjabi film industry, the actress says, adding: “The Punjabi industry is still very raw. Frankly, that is also working for the industry. It’s raw, upcoming since it’s evolving, we are still going through our phases to find out what the people like, and what will the audience like.

“Sometimes films surprise you in a way that you didn’t even expect. There are no fixed strategies, not yet at least. People think that there is no discipline and structure in the Punjabi film industry. I am somebody who has discipline in my life but I personally don’t feel that there should be a lot of structure in a creative space. I enjoy being all over the place sometimes.”

The actress says that she was quite anxious and very excited as well.

“I was so scared at first. I was excited because it was my first project in Bollywood and it was Akshay sir. Everything was giving me the jitters and I can’t begin to tell you how I gave my first shot.

“I thought I would collapse. It was a rough and tough role and I was thinking about how I would do it. I am really scared and I hope it comes out well,” she says.

To prepare for the role, Sargun made sure to stop watching cops on screen.

“I think we have all watched cops since we were kids, whether it’s real life, TV, films, etc. When I did this role, I made sure I wasn’t watching anything. I just feel that when you watch a lot of something, you tend to copy it and make a caricature out of it. I wanted to do whatever comes to me naturally,” she concludes.

Netflix backs Johnny Depp’s film comeback post-defamation trial

0

Streaming giant Netflix is helping finance Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s movie comeback following his much-publicized defamation trial against ex-wife and actress Amber Heard that he eventually won.

According to aceshowbiz.com, the 59-year-old will portray King Louis XV in the French-language film ‘La Favorite’, which was previously reported to be titled ‘Jeanne du Barry’. Netflix has acquired the rights to stream the film in France, people familiar with the deal tell Bloomberg.

The acquisition of the film’s rights will be used by the producers to help finance the production. Under the deal, the period piece will be hitting the streamer 15 months following its theatrical release. Netflix, however, does not have the right to stream the movie in other territories and is not involved in the making of the picture.

Directed by Maiwenn Le Besco, La Favorite will tell the story of Jeanne Becu, an impoverished seamstress who rises through the ranks of Louis XV’s court to become his official mistress. Le Besco also stars as Jeanne Becu. Though the real Louis XV ruled over France for nearly 59 years, he “died as an unpopular king…accused of corruption and debauchery,” Variety wrote in January.

Filming is scheduled to start later this summer across France and will last for about three months. The movie is expected to be ready for theatrical release in the country in 2023.

La Favorite will mark Depp’s first acting role since he won the defamation case.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages after the jury found his ex-wife Heard guilty of defaming him. The same jury awarded $2 million to the Aquaman actress who made similar claims against Depp.

Depp’s last film was Minamata, which was released in the U.S. late last year. In November 2020, he withdrew from Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, in which he was supposed to reprise his role as Grindelwald, and was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen after losing his UK libel case against The Sun.

Hardik Pandya inspires India to 50-run win over England in opening T20I

0

A smashing half-century from all-rounder Hardik Pandya (51 off 33 balls) backed up by his superb bowling efforts (4/33 in 4 overs) gave India a huge 50-run win against the Jos Buttler-led England in the opening T20 International – a day-night game -at The Rose Bowl here late on Thursday.

Pandya carried his sublime form from the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the recently-concluded series against Ireland into the game against England, guiding the visitors to a massive 198/8 in 20 overs, before returning to bowl a fiery spell that saw the hosts bundled out for 148 in 19.3 overs.

Pandya picked up where the top order left off, joining Suryakumar Yadav (39 off 19) in the blitz, keeping the run rate above 10-an-over in the crucial middle phase.

The side has now won 14 of the last 17 T20Is since the tournament, with a no-result against South Africa in Bengaluru meaning the side has lost just twice in the same stretch.

Pandya then returned with the ball to account for the dangerous opener Jason Roy (4), Dawid Malan (21), (Liam Livingstone 0), and Sam Curran (4) as England under new captain Buttler found the going tough from the start of their innings.

With Pandya giving such a commanding performance, and players like Deepak Hooda too contributing in a big way, it bodes well for the team as it prepares for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

Deepak Hooda’s 33 (17) shows his form in Ireland was no flash in the pan, with the Dinesh Karthik career renaissance providing the side with another finisher at the side’s disposal.

On the bowling side, Yuzvendra Chahal continues to look imposing. Claiming Harry Brook (28 off 23) and Moeen Ali (36 off 20), the leg-spinner curtailed any chance of an English fight back.

As his red-ball compatriots ride the wave of a successful start under Brendon McCullum, it wasn’t to be for Buttler as the new T20I white-ball captain fell to defeat and fell for a first-ball duck in the chase.

The right-hander was set up by Bhuvneshwar Kumar, with the swing bowler’s first four deliveries moving away from Jason Roy, only for Buttler’s first to hoop in and dismantle the stumps.

Earlier, Buttler deployed seven bowlers, with Chris Jordan (2/23 from four overs) the only one to provide any pushback to India’s charges.

Brief scores: India 198/8 in 20 overs (Deepak Hooda 33, Suryakumar Yadav 39, Hardik Pandya 51) beat England 148 in 19.3 overs (Moeen Ali 36; Hardik Pandya 4/33, Yuzvendra Chahal 2/32, Arshdeep Singh 2/18) by 50 runs.

Women’s World Cup: India lose to New Zealand but keep quarterfinal hopes alive

0

The Indian women’s hockey team put up a gritty performance against New Zealand in their Pool B match but went down fighting 3-4 at the FIH Hockey World Cup 2022 in a late Thursday night game.

However, the Savita-led India team is still in contention for a spot in the quarterfinal as they finished third in their pool. India will face the side which finishes second in Pool C in the crossover match on July 10 for a place in the last eight. Vandana Katariya (4th minute), Lalremsiami (44th), and Gurjit Kaur (59th) were the scorers for India.

The Indian team started the game aggressively and put pressure on their opponents in the opening minutes of the match. In the fourth minute, Lalremsiami produced a fantastic ball from the edge of the circle and Vandana Katariya got into a great position to tap the ball into the goal to help India take a 1-0 lead.

New Zealand made a circle penetration in the 10th minute, but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Kiwis fought back after they earned a penalty corner and Olivia Merry didn’t miss out on the opportunity of slotting the ball into the goal in the 12th minute.

The Indians earned the moment in the opening minutes of the second quarter and obtained a penalty corner in the 18th minute. However, Deep Grace Ekka couldn’t find a way to break the 1-1 deadlock. The Indian team continued to be the aggressors for the most part of the second quarter, but the New Zealand defense stood firm and kept their opponents at bay. However, New Zealand made a circle penetration in the 29th minute and Tessa Jopp found the back of the net to help the Kiwis take a 2-1 lead.

New Zealand rode on the momentum and earned back-to-back penalty corners in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Frances Davies converted the second PC in the 32nd minute to help the Kiwis extend their lead further to 3-1.

The Indians earned a penalty corner in the 43rd minute. However, they missed out on converting the opportunity. They continued to put pressure on their opponents and obtained a PC in the 47th minute, but the Kiwis kept India at bay yet again. However, Sushila Chanu’s fantastic pass into the circle in the 44th minute to Lalremsiami, who deflected the ball into the goal, kept India in the game.

The Indian team earned a PC in the opening minutes of the final quarter, but Ekka struck the ball wide of the left post. India obtained a flurry of PCs in the 47th minute, but the Kiwis stood firm once again.

Sushila effected a brilliant cross from the right flank, but Monika couldn’t direct the ball into the goal. However, Olivia Merry converted a PC in the 54th minute to help New Zealand extend their lead to 4-2. But the Indians continued to put up a strong fight and Gurjit Kaur converted a PC in the 59th minute. India won multiple PCs in the final minute of the match, but the Kiwis ensured they walked off the field as winners.

India will take on Spain or Korea (whoever finishes second in Pool C) on July 10.

ICC Men’s T20 WC Qualifiers: Singapore are better prepared than before, believes captain Amjad

0

Captain Amjad Mahboob believes that Singapore is better prepared for this round of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifiers than they were three years ago as the team seeks to make history.

The 41-year-old Mahboob was part of the side that finished sixth in Group A in 2019 in a tournament that took place just three months after their first-ever T20I.

Now more experienced in the international arena, and with positive results against Papua New Guinea and Malaysia under their belt in recent series, Singapore goes into the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier B confident of springing a surprise and making their first-ever World Cup.

“We have worked very hard since the last time we played in the CWC qualifiers. We know the areas we need to improve and I’m very confident we’ll be better than last time,” said Mahboob.

“Preparations have been excellent. We’ve played against PNG and Malaysia as well as a good team from Pakistan, who have provided a very good test. Overall, we are very satisfied and we are looking forward to getting to Zimbabwe,” he added.

Singapore to open up against the host Zimbabwe, who was the first full member they defeated upon gaining T20I status when they triumphed by four runs in September 2019.

More recently, Mahboob’s side broke new ground by scoring 200 in a T20I for the first time in a losing cause against Papua New Guinea, Surendran Chandramohan striking a century, while Aryaman Sunil’s hard-hitting in the death overs has also come to the fore.

Mahboob credits new coach Salman Butt, the former Pakistan international, with boosting Singapore’s firepower with the bat and hopes his key players can keep their momentum going.

“We have some high-class players in our squad who can change a game very quickly. Against Malaysia recently, we needed 34 in two overs and Aryaman finished it in 10 balls. Surendran is finding his form, he’s one of our very important players. Salman has been working hard with all our batters, as shown by us scoring 200 against PNG,” he said.

“Zimbabwe is a very strong team but we will play tough cricket and give 100 percent. In T20, a match can change in one or two overs. As captain, I’m very satisfied with our options and we are ready for this tournament,” he added.

Two places are up for grabs in October’s showpiece in Australia at the upcoming qualifier and Mahboob is well aware of how earning one of them could have a seismic impact on cricket in Singapore. Whatever the outcome in Zimbabwe, however, the veteran has already seen a rise in interest and believes that trend will keep going in one direction.

“We really enjoy playing in these qualifiers and it inspires our youth,” he said.

“When we played in 2019, a lot of kids started playing cricket in Singapore, which was really exciting. It definitely had an impact and hopefully, this will too,” he added.

Malaysia Masters: Sindhu, Prannoy move into quarterfinals; Praneeth, Kashyap bow out

0

Top Indian shuttlers P.V Sindhu, and H.S Prannoy reached the quarterfinals while compatriot Parupalli Kashyap and B. Sai Praneeth made second-round exits at the Malaysia Masters 2022 at the Axiata Arena, here on Thursday.

Sindhu, seventh in the badminton world rankings, took just 26 minutes to beat China’s Zhang Yi Man 21-12, 21-10 in her women’s singles second-round match to set up a quarterfinal clash against world No. 2 Tai Tzu Ying of the Chinese Taipei.

Up against Yi Man, a former world championships bronze medallist and an opponent she had never beaten before, Sindhu took control of the game early after winning seven points on the trot to race to a 9-1 lead.

It was smooth sailing from there on for the Indian badminton ace, who never trailed throughout the duration of the match against world No. 32 Yi Man.

However, the quarterfinal clash against Tai Tzu Ying will be a much tougher affair for the two-time Olympic medal-winning Indian. Sindhu has a dismal 5-16 record against the Chinese Taipei shuttler and has not beaten her since 2019. Earlier this month, Tai Tzu Ying knocked PV Sindhu out of the Malaysia Open quarter-finals.

In her second-round match, Tzu Ying came from behind to beat Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei 16-21, 21-7, 21-‘.

In men’s singles, H.S Prannoy ranked 19th also cruised into the men’s singles quarter-finals after beating Wang Tzu Wei of Chinese Taipei 21-19, 21-16, in a second-round match that lasted for 44 minutes. The 29-year-old Prannoy will face Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama in the quarterfinal.

However, other Indian male shuttlers — Parupalli Kashyap and B Sai Praneeth — bowed out after losing their respective second-round matches in the BWF Super 500 badminton tournament.

While Kashyap went down 10-21, 15-21 to Indonesian sixth seed Anthony Ginting, world bronze medallist B Sai Praneeth lost to Chinese shuttler Li Shi Feng 14-21, 17-21.

World Athletics C’ship: Vetter pulls out with injury, no clash with Neeraj Chopra

0

The 2017 World Champion javelin thrower, Johannes Vetter of Germany has pulled out of the upcoming World Athletics Championship in Oregon due to an injury, which would mean that there will be no clash with Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra.

Vetter, who was in superb form in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympic Games, was the favorite to win the title in Tokyo but could not produce the same performance and finished out of the medals. Chopra went on to win the gold medal in Tokyo with a brilliant performance.

After the disappointment of the Tokyo Olympics, Vetter has competed in only one event in 2022 — the Ursapharm Speerwurf Meeting in Offenburg, Germany in May winning a silver medal with a throw of 85.64, way below his personal best of 97.76 meters.

On Wednesday, Vetter informed the reason for his absence from the circuit since May and also announced that would not be competing in the World Championships.

“As you probably have noticed, I haven’t shared much content over the past months. I have been fighting with shoulder problems since the beginning of the season. Therefore, we decided to not compete at the World Championship in Oregon,” Vetter informed in a post on Instagram.

He said that he was not sure when he will be able to compete again.

“It’s tough to say when I will be able to compete again and I will need the following weeks to digest this decision. Nevertheless, I will try to keep you posted and share a few more updates. #VetterWurf.”

Vetter was expected to make a strong comeback in the 2022 World Championship to add to the bronze he won in the 2019 World Championships.

Bollywood actor Ranbir Kapoor, who is gearing up for the release of ‘Shamshera’, says he loves to be a part of original stories and loves to have original music in his films. He is happy that in an age of remixes, his upcoming film boasts original music which he hopes audiences will love.

Ranbir says: “Not to put remixes down, they have their own place in the world and the audiences enjoy it. But, I like to be part of original things, ideas, original stories, and especially, original music. I have been so fortunate that a lot of my success and popularity has come through the music of my films.”

He adds: “May it be Mohit Chauhan, Arijit Singh, Pritam, or A. R. Rahman or all the different musicians that I have worked with, they’ve really been instrumental in my growth as an actor and as a star. With Shamshera that’s another step.”

The first two songs of ‘Shamshera’ titled ‘Ji Huzoor’ and the romantic track ‘Fitoor’ are both situational songs that take the narrative of the film forward. ‘Fitoor’ has been sung by Arijit Singh and Neeti Mohan and Ranbir hopes that the quintessential love track would emotionally connect with audiences in a big way.

He further adds, “I love ‘Fitoor’. It’s a lovely romantic track, the quintessential love song that I hope people also love. The scale of ‘Fitoor’ is just insane and it will look grand on the big screen.”

About ‘Shamshera’ music album, Ranbir comments: “Of course, Shamshera is a period action entertainer. So, the music also had to fit in that period so that it was not jarring. The film has very different kinds of songs. It’s got a good amalgamation of different kinds of music which I really like and I hope people like it too.”

The story of ‘Shamshera’ is set in the fictitious city of Kaza, where a warrior tribe is imprisoned, enslaved, and tortured by a ruthless authoritarian general Shuddh Singh. This is the story of a man who became a slave, a slave who became a leader, and then a legend for his tribe. He relentlessly fights for his tribe’s freedom and dignity. His name is Shamshera.

The high-octane, adrenaline-pumping entertainer is set in the 1800s in the heartland of India. It has the big promise of a never seen Ranbir Kapoor, who plays ‘Shamshera’ in the film. Sanjay Dutt plays Ranbir’s arch-enemy.

Directed by Karan Malhotra, this action extravaganza has been produced by Aditya Chopra and is set to release in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu on July 22.

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who still commands a huge fan following among cricket fans, turns 41 on Thursday, July 7. The Ranchi-based Dhoni recognized as one of India’s most successful captains, led the team to victories in the 2007 Men’s T20 World Cup, 2011 Men’s Cricket World Cup in ODIs, and 2013 Champions Trophy apart from going on top of Test rankings in 2009.

At the domestic level, he captained Chennai Super Kings to IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021 apart from two now-defunct Champions League T20 titles in 2010 and 2014. Dhoni is fondly remembered for his attacking stroke play, keeping a calm head as a skipper in under-pressure situations, giving him the tag of “captain cool”.

He etched his name in the minds of cricket fans forever with his match-winning six off Nuwan Kulasekara in the final of the 2011 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to give India the trophy on home soil, ending a wait of 28 years as World Champions in ODI format. In 538 matches in international cricket, Dhoni scored 17,266 at an average of 44.96, with 634 catches and 195 stumpings done as a wicketkeeper.

Currently, Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, is in the UK and celebrating his birthday with his friends and family, with India wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant joining in as well. He was also spotted watching Wimbledon matches in London on Wednesday. On social media, many former and current cricketers led the birthday wishes for “Captain Cool”.
