Selena Gomez is ‘just not happy’ with US Supreme Court’s abortion ruling

0

Singer-actress Selena Gomez has voiced her opinion on the recent overturning of the landmark Roe v. Wade by the US Supreme Court, reports Variety’. The recent verdict, which effectively ends federal protections for abortion access, has sparked protests across the US.

Selena, who attended the red carpet premiere of her upcoming second season of the mystery-comedy series ‘Only Murders in the Building’, took a moment during the event to speak out against the Supreme Court’s recent decision. Selena told ‘Variety’, “It’s about voting. It’s about getting men – men needing to stand up and also speak against this issue.”

“It’s also the number of women that are hurting. I’m just not happy and I hope that we can do everything in our power to do something to change that”, she added.

‘Variety’ further states that Gomez also pointed others to a recent post she shared on Twitter, in which she shared a link to Planned Parenthood’s website, explaining it as a valuable resource on what people can do next to help defend abortion access on a state level.

Earlier, Gomez had written on her Twitter, “Watching a Constitutional right be stripped away is horrific. A woman should have the right to CHOOSE what she wants to do with her own body. End of story.”

Sobhita Dhulipala’s middle-finger gesture on video goes viral

0

Sobhita Dhulipala, who was most recently seen in the Adivi Sesh movie ‘Major’, shows her middle finger in a viral video ostensibly at those who are linking her up with Telugu star Naga Chaitanya.

Her detractors on social media have accused Sobhita of being responsible for the much-publicized breakup between Naga Chaitanya and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, who’s herself a popular actress.

The video clip of Sobhita showing her middle finger while on a flight has gone viral on social media.

Even though the video footage obscures the target of her gesture, netizens claim it is Sobhita’s response to the rumors of her link-up with Naga Chaitanya. The upload time and date haven’t been made public, though.

Incidentally, Sobhita has denied the rumors, calling them “baseless”, whereas Naga Chaitanya has not responded at all. His PR team, however, has blamed the Samantha camp for the rumor.

Int’l javelin throw player Maria Khalkho battles financial crisis, illness

0

International javelin throw player Maria Goroti Khalkho of Ranchi is today battling against huge financial debt and lung disease. She did not even get married as she had dedicated her entire life to her sport.

In the 1970s, she won several gold and silver medals participating in a dozen national and international competitions. After competing at the highest level, she spent nearly 30 years of her life training other athletes for javelin throws.

Today, she is gasping for breath due to lung disease and is completely bedridden that she needs support to even walk.

Sadly, a reputed athlete of her era does not even have money to buy medicines and food for herself today.

Maria currently lives at her sister’s house in the Namkum area of Ranchi. Her sister’s financial condition is not good as well.

In the last couple of months, her health has deteriorated in a way that her arms, which had once shown resolute strength in the sports arena, are no longer strong enough to lift even a glass of water.

When IANS published a report on Maria’s illness and poor financial condition in February, the Jharkhand Sports Department took note of her condition and provided her immediate assistance of Rs 25,000.

Earlier, the department had provided financial help of Rs one lakh from the Players’ Welfare Fund to help Maria fight her illness but this amount was soon exhausted due to expensive medicines and treatment.

The 64-year-old former athlete does not even receive an old-age pension. The doctors have advised Maria to drink milk, and eat eggs and nutritious food, but when she can’t afford two square meals a day, then how will she buy nutritious food?

Every month more than Rs 4,000 is spent on medicines only. Since the onset of the lung disease, Maria reels under a debt of more than Rs 1 lakh.

Since her childhood, Maria wanted to become an athlete. In 1974, when she was a student in class 8, she won a gold medal in the national-level javelin meet. She also won the gold medal in the javelin throw at the All India Rural Summit.

In 1975, she won the gold medal in a national school competition held in Manipur. In 1975-76, when the International Javelin Meet was organized in Jalandhar, Maria again won a gold medal. In 1976-77 too, she proved her mettle in many national and regional competitions.

In the 1980s, she turned to coach. From 1988 to 2018, she served as a coach at the Government Training Centre at Mahuadanr in Latehar district of Jharkhand on a salary of Rs 8,000 to 10,000 per month.

The job was contractual, so even after retirement, Maria was left with almost no money.

Many athletes like Yashika Kujur, Ambresia Kujur, Pratima Khalkho, and Reema Lakra, who have learned the techniques of throwing the javelin from Maria, have won medals in many competitions in the country and abroad.

Jharkhand Grappling Association chief Praveen Singh says that despite the state government making several announcements for helping former sportspersons, no concrete plan could be made to help them.

When the media raises the plight of such sportspersons only then they might get the necessary help, Singh adds.

Nagesh Kukunoor: ‘Modern Love Hyderabad’ is a love letter to love itself

0

After Mumbai, romance buffs are set for more of the heady stuff as the Hyderabad chapter of the ‘Modern Love’ series, explores various emotions and relationships set in the culturally vibrant city of Hyderabad.

Prime Video on Monday unveiled the trailer for ‘Modern Love Hyderabad’, the second Indian adaptation in the series of three localized versions of ‘Modern Love’.

Inspired by the famous ‘New York Times’ column, ‘Modern Love Hyderabad’ strings together six heartfelt episodes of love, directed by talented filmmakers from the Telugu industry, including Nagesh Kukunoor, Venkatesh Maha, Uday Gurrala and Devika Buhadhanam, and features a cast including Nithya Menon, Revathy, Aadhi Pinisetty, Ritu Varma, Abhijeet Duddala, Malavika Nair, Suhasini Maniratnam, Naresh Agastya, Ulka Gupta, Naresh, and Komalee Prasad.

A SIC Productions, produced by Elahe Hiptoola with Nagesh Kukunoor as the showrunner, the new Telugu Amazon Original series brings to life stories of love that are truly unique to the local ethos and essence of the modern-day Hyderabad.

Producer and director Nagesh Kukunoor, who has also directed three episodes (‘My Unlikely Pandemic Partner’; ‘Fuzzy, Purple And Full Of Thorns’; and ‘Why Did She Leave Me There?’), said: “Love is an emotion which had infinite expressions. For ‘Modern Love Hyderabad’, I’ve tried to focus on how love helps us grow, learn to trust and forgive. Apart from being a love letter to love itself, ‘Modern Love Hyderabad’ offers a peek into the extraordinary city, which is steeped in culture and history yet pulsating with the vibrancy of youth.

“The city is the omnipresent character in all the stories of love of this incredible series. We have tried to capture the beating heart of Hyderabad through the myriad of people who call it home. I hope audiences relate to these stories and find themselves in the characters we’ve created for them.”

Director Venkatesh Maha (of ‘Finding your Penguin’) said: “What is wonderful about ‘Modern Love Hyderabad’ is that while the stories it tells are modern, they are still rooted in who we are culturally. The episode I’ve directed reflects the very real struggles of young Indians trying to find love — often turning to online dating sites, and to friends to help them out.

“Along with reflecting our times, it is a story that highlights the changing tastes and lives of today’s young people. It is a story where you will instantly relate to the person on screen because you probably know someone like that, or maybe you are that person.”

Director Uday Gurrala (of What Clown Wrote this!) noted: “There are more shades of love than any other human experience. With Modern Love Hyderabad, our aim was to bring out those different shades of love that go beyond romance. In my story titled ‘What Clown Wrote This!’, you will see universal themes but from a distinctly Telugu lens and that’s what makes it so interesting.

“We’ve delved deep into the psyche of the Telugu man (and woman) to understand what makes today’s generation tick. I am delighted to know that through Amazon Prime Video, audiences around the world will get to experience our love for our city and the characters through the stories we’ve tried to tell in this series.”

Devika Bahudhanam, who has directed ‘About That Rustle in The Bushes’ episode, added: “While Hyderabad is a city built on history and culture where communities from various religious backgrounds thrive together, it is also a futuristic city — the IT hub — leading to constant evolution.

“My story brings is ever-changing understanding and comprehension of love. The story speaks of hope, change, of finding courage, being comfortable in one’s own skin — and more than anything, it speaks of acceptance.”

The stories in ‘Modern Love Hyderabad’ has been penned by Nagesh Kukunoor, Shashi Sudigala and Bahaish Kapoor, and the series boasts of a multi-composer original soundtrack created by MM Keeravani, Kaala Bhairava, Tapas Relia, Smaran Sai and Vivek Sagar.

Prime members in India and across 240 countries and territories worldwide will be able to watch ‘Modern Love Hyderabad’ from July 8.

‘Kaduva’ will be a refreshing change, says actor Prithviraj

0

Stating that he was immensely proud of the content being generated by Malayalam cinema, actor Prithviraj on Monday said that the only genre that the industry had slightly forgotten was the mass action entertainer genre and that his upcoming film ‘Kaduva’ was a step in that direction.

Speaking at the launch of the film’s teaser in Chennai, which was attended by the entire cast of ‘Kaduva’ and a host of celebrities including Tamil actors Arya and Jiiva, Prithviraj said, “We have to have all kinds of films. Right now, the Malayalam industry is making superb films. We are going through a phase where we are making superb content but we’ve missed out one genre. I, as a film lover, miss the mass masala commercial entertainers in Malayalam. So, when they narrated this script to me in 2017, I felt it had been a long time since such films had come out in Malayalam.

“Let me make it clear, the multi-city promotions that we have embarked on are not only for ‘Kaduva’. This is the first step of a big process. I am someone who wishes that from now on, all big Malayalam films that are to be released are released in this fashion. We have to come and communicate with our audience in every state on a first-person basis. I hope and pray that we will be able to sustain this process for all big releases coming from Kerala.”

The title of the film, which features Prithviraj and Samyuktha Menon in the lead and Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi playing a pivotal role, means Tiger in Malayalam. It is actually also a short form of the hero’s name in the film, Prithviraj disclosed while replying to a question that was posed to him after the launch.

Mayank Agarwal all set to join Indian team ahead of Edgbaston Test

0

Opening batter Mayank Agarwal Monday is all set to join the Indian team ahead of the upcoming Edgbaston Test against England, scheduled to start from July 1.

As per his Instagram story, Agarwal was seen on the flight with “Birmingham” written above where he was seated. According to the latest government rules on travel to England, Agarwal won’t be subjected to any quarantine period and may be available to play immediately if needed.

Agarwal, 31, had initially been left out of India’s squad for the Edgbaston Test named in May. But a right groin injury to KL Rahul, which ruled him out of the home T20I series against South Africa in June, and captain Rohit Sharma’s availability in doubt due to testing positive for Covid-19 means that Agarwal is now on his way to Birmingham to join the Test squad.

Agarwal last played a Test match for India in March, during the two-match home series against Sri Lanka in Mohali and Bengaluru. He could manage to score just 59 runs at an average of 19.66. He then turned out for Punjab Kings in IPL 2022, where he was their captain.

But Agarwal had a season to forget with the bat, scoring just 196 runs in 12 innings at an average of 16.33 and a strike rate of 122.5 as Punjab finished sixth on the points table. He then appeared for Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final against Uttar Pradesh, making 10 and 22 in a five-wicket defeat at Alur.

India is leading the Test series 2-1 against England, before a Covid-19 outbreak in the visitors’ camp saw the fifth and final Test in Manchester rescheduled to Edgbaston this year. After this, India will play three ODIs and as many T20Is, scheduled to happen from July 7 to 17.

Very difficult to bowl in cold conditions; felt like a finger spinner: Chahal

0

A sell-out first T20I between India and Ireland at Malahide was delayed by two hours due to rain and wet outfield. Despite this and a pitch favoring fast bowlers, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal thrived.

He conceded just 11 runs in his three overs, at an economy rate of 3.66, and took the wicket of Lorcan Tucker in an economical spell to play a crucial hand in India’s seven-wicket win in a 12-overs a side affair.

“Very difficult (in these cold conditions). I felt like a finger spinner (during the match). Sometimes it’s hard but you have to adapt to every condition. I’m not okay (due to cold) I’m wearing three sweaters right now,” said Chahal after the match.

Chahal, who was adjudged Player of the Match, credited all-rounder Hardik Pandya for giving him the freedom to bowl his way. “He (Hardik) gave liberty to bowl whatever I want to bowl. The atmosphere is pretty chilled.”

Senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who took out Ireland captain Andrew Balbirnie by ratting his top of off-stump, was pleased with getting conditions tailor-made for his bowling style. “There was a swing with the new ball, it got better after 5-6 overs. Thought it would get harder with the moisture but didn’t. It’s good to bowl Test-match line and length, glad it worked out.”

Bhuvneshwar felt delighted over tearaway pacer Umran Malik making his international debut, but got only over to bowl and gave away 18 runs. “Umran and other youngsters from around the world have made their debut because of the IPL which is great. Few more yet to make, so we have a lot of exciting talent. The best part about our team is wherever we go people come out to support us.”

Virat unlikely to lead if Rohit is unwell for rescheduled Test, says his childhood coach

0

Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma has revealed that the star batter is not ‘under pressure’ to hit his long-awaited 71st century, adding that he never goes after records and contributing to India’s win is important for him rather than worrying about his personal milestone.

The 33-year-old Kohli has gone more than 100 innings in all forms of cricket including IPL without scoring a hundred since hitting 136 in Kolkata against Bangladesh in November 2019. He has often got starts but he hasn’t been able to convert them into big scores. He has even passed fifty several times since that innings in Kolkata but hasn’t managed to hit his 71st international century yet.

“No, he is not at all under pressure. Contributing to the team and India’s victory is more important for him rather than getting his hundred. He never goes after records. So, as long as he’s doing well and is contributing well with the bat, he is not worried about his personal milestone,” Rajkumar told IANS in an interview on the sidelines of an award show in the national capital.

During the ceremony, Kartikeya Sharma, founder of Pro Sportify and Member of Parliament-elect (Rajya Sabha) from Haryana was conferred with the “Indian Sports Fan Award 2022” in presence of Haryana Sports Minister Sandeep Singh, Olympic medallists Karnam Malleshwari, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt and others, for his contribution to Indian sports via various leagues.

Virat looked in fine touch during India’s four-day warm-up game against Leicestershire County Club, which ended in a draw. It’s often been seen that the star cricketer generally doesn’t play the orthodox square-cut, especially in Test cricket but he found a way with the flashy punches in the warm-up game.

Asked whether Virat has added a few new shots in his armory, the coach said that Virat always tries to adapt well to the conditions and they have conversations from time to time.

“I think he was playing really well and got some 60-odd runs in the second innings. He looked in great nick and I feel he will continue that in the coming series. Virat is a sort of player, who keeps working on his batting based on the requirement of the conditions. He always keeps on adding a few shots in his armory so that he can counter or adjust with the condition, where he is playing,” said Sharma.

“Adaptability has been his best strength, which he is doing now. We do have conversations from time to time but there is nothing much to advise him since he is relaxed and playing well,” he added.

‘VIRAT UNLIKELY TO LEAD’

Rohit Sharma, the designated India skipper for the Brimington Test, has tested Covid-19 positive and there has been much chatter on social media regarding appointing Kohli as the captain for the rescheduled Test match against England.

Notably, it was Virat, under whose captaincy India was leading the five-match series 2-1 against England last year before the fifth and last Test was postponed due to Covid-19 fears in the visiting camp. So, most Kohli fans want to see the Delhi-born cricketer leading the side for the lone Test on this tour. However, Rajkumar doesn’t see that happening.

“He was not sacked or removed, he himself left the captaincy. So, I don’t think I will see him leading again. I’m not very sure what the selectors or the BCCI will decide? Virat is a team-man and wants India to do well and contribute to the team, which I think he’s doing very well,” he said.

The much-awaited rescheduled Test against England is scheduled to be played from July 1 at Edgbaston.
