NASA picks 3 firms to design nuclear power plants for Moon

0

The US space agency NASA has picked three design concept proposals for a nuclear fission surface power system design that could be ready to launch by the end of the decade for a demonstration on the Moon.

This technology would benefit future exploration under the Artemis mission that aims to land the first woman and the first person of color on the lunar surface and establish long-term exploration in preparation for missions to Mars.

Lockheed Martin, Westinghouse, and IX (a joint venture from Intuitive Machines and X-Energy) won the 12-month contracts, to be awarded through the DOE’s Idaho National Laboratory, which is each valued at approximately $5 million.

The contracts fund the development of initial design concepts for a 40-kilowatt class fission power system planned to last at least 10 years in the lunar environment.

A demonstration of such systems on the Moon would pave the way for long-duration missions on the Moon and, ultimately, Mars.

“New technology drives our exploration of the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Developing these early designs will help us lay the groundwork for powering our long-term human presence on other worlds,” Jim Reuter, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate, said in a statement late on Tuesday.

“The Fission Surface Power project is a very achievable first step toward the United States establishing nuclear power on the Moon,” added Idaho National Laboratory Director, John Wagner.

The Phase 1 awards will provide NASA with critical information from the industry that can lead to joint development of a full flight-certified fission power system.

Fission surface power technologies also will help NASA mature nuclear propulsion systems that rely on reactors to generate power.

These systems could be used for deep space exploration missions.

Monkeypox jab be given to at-risk gay, bisexual men: UK report

0

Some gay and bisexual men, who are at a higher risk of contracting monkeypox, should be offered a vaccine, say the UK health officials.

According to the BBC, this could help to control the recent outbreak of the rare virus in the UK in which 793 people have been infected so far.

The report mentioned that Monkeypox is not defined as a sexually-transmitted infection. However, it can be passed on by close contact during sex, and with bedding, towels and skin.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said that a vaccine designed to protect against smallpox, called Imvanex, will help protect people who could be exposed to monkeypox.

The vaccine is effective against monkeypox because it is from the same family of viruses. Its use has been signed off by the UK’s vaccine experts, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI).

Health officials say they are continuing to see “a notable proportion of cases in gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men”.

They say they hope to roll out vaccines to those at higher risk that will “break chains of transmission”.

Twitter board recommends $44 bn buyouts by Elon Musk

0

As Elon Musk fixes a few ‘unresolved matters’ with Twitter, the company’s board has recommended the $44 billion buyouts.

In a fresh regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC) on Tuesday, Twitter’s board of directors recommended unanimously that shareholders approve the proposed $44 billion buyouts of the micro-blogging platform to Tesla CEO Musk.

The board “unanimously recommends that you vote (for) the adoption of the merger agreement,” it said in the filing.

“Twitter’s Board of Directors, after considering the factors more fully described in the enclosed proxy statement, unanimously determined that the merger agreement is advisable and the merger and the other transactions contemplated by the merger agreement are fair to, advisable, and in the best interests of Twitter and its stockholders,” the company said.

Twitter shares jumped around 3 percent to reach $38.60 each.

Musk on Tuesday said that there are still a few “unresolved matters” with Twitter before he moves ahead with his $44 billion takeover deal.

Addressing the Qatar Economic Forum, the world’s richest man said that he is still waiting to know the presence of the actual number of bots on the platform.

“There is the question of, will the debt portion of the round come together and then will the shareholder’s vote in favor,” he said.

He said he will focus on “driving the product” at Twitter and does not want to become the CEO of the micro-blogging platform.

Annoyed at the presence of fake users and bots on Twitter, Musk in May put the $44 billion takeover deal on hold.

Musk said he does not believe in Twitter findings, which claim that false or spam accounts represent fewer than 5 percent of its monetizable daily active users (229 million).

He said that Twitter’s algorithm might be manipulating users and has “very bot-friendly” rules.

Musk also asked the US SEC to probe whether Twitter’s claim on the number of its user base is true.

From different stalls of chaats, and chole bhature to traditional dresses and rakhi, the Delite Cinema in the Capital was all decorated to give the feeling as if you are walking through the lanes of Chandni Chowk.

The fans had gathered and waited with bated breath to welcome the cast of Aanand L. Rai movie ‘Raksha Bandhan’, including Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna, Smrithi Srikanth, and Sadia Khateeb besides the director himself.

Akshay and the entire team of ‘Raksha Bandhan’ arrived to launch the trailer of their upcoming movie. Usually, the trailer launch does not happen in Delhi but as the movie is all set in Chandni Chowk, the makers preferred to do it in the Capital.

The story of the movie is centered around a caring brother, played by Akshay, who is not ready to settle down till his four sisters get married.

At the venue, Akshay was seen getting clicked with his on-screen sisters: Sahejmeen Kaur, Deepika Khanna, Smrithi Srikanth, and Sadia Khateeb. In the movie, there is a scene where he takes his four sisters for a scooter ride. That scooter was also kept there and he posed with them while sitting on it.

It was indeed a nostalgic moment for Akshay as he had done the entire shooting of the film in his birthplace. While waving out to his fans and exchanging fun banters with them, he recalled his childhood days and different shops where he used to enjoy his favorite food and how he used to watch movies in Delite even by purchasing movie tickets in black.

Akshay said: “I watched a number of movies at Delite even if it meant buying the tickets in black. In fact, there were other theatres as well like Moti Cinema many of which are closed.”

He added: “It never felt like shooting for a movie. It was more of a homecoming for me and hence the film is very close to my heart. I just remember what we ate during the shooting of the film. It was like we were having a picnic with Aanand L Rai.”

Leaving one and all stunned with her gorgeousness, Bhumi draped in a red sari, also made a dramatic entry on the stage while delivering dialogue from the movie: ‘Apni behenon ke aage mujhe fir se bhool gaya na tu'(you again forgot me in front of your sisters).

As the movie is all about sibling relationships, Akshay reminscised his bond with his sister Alka Bhatia and how they rarely had any fights with each other.

Bhumi added that she and her sister Samiksha Pednekar used to fight over every small thing. “We used to fight and argue over everything but were inseparable. We just can’t do without each other. Like the bond of the four sisters in the movie, I share a similar relationship with my sister. We share everything.”

Akshay also shared that his mama’s(Uncle) house is in Chandni Chowk where he visits sometimes and relishes the delicacies of old Delhi.

Terming it “amazing”, Sahejmeen, Deepika, Smrithi, and Sadia described their shooting experience with Akshay and Bhumi as fun-filled.

Deepika, who has featured in ‘Gandii Baat’, ‘Yeh Crazy Dil’, ‘Patiala Babes’ and ‘Who’s Your Daddy’ reminisced: “I had a wonderful time on the set and amazing food.”

The entire cast cracked jokes with the fans and media during the trailer launch.’Raksha Bandhan’ is directed by Aanand L. Rai and produced by Colour Yellow Productions, Zee Studios, and Alka Hiranandani in association with Cape Of Good Films.

It is scheduled to hit the theatres on August 11.

“It’s no secret I’m a big Marvel fan so being Kamala Khan’s mental thirsting soundtrack is an absolute dream come true for me. The best part of all this, however, is that I can officially say that I exist in the MCU.”

He added: “Shoutout to @sanaamanat622 and the whole Ms. Marvel team for putting so many dope South Asian artists in the show like @raaginder, @rizahmed, @vizdumb and more. A much needed change from the corny sitar stock music!

Kiara Advani’s take on modern relationships ahead of ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’ release

0

While her last two films ‘Shershaah’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ were loved by critics and audiences alike, Bollywood actress Kiara Advani, who is gearing up for her next ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’, says the main problem in new-age relationships is not having deep conversations to understand each other’s perspective.

She shares how the upcoming film is doing just that with the right doses of entertainment.

In conversation with IANS, Kiara opens up on her recent success and her upcoming film where she says her character is the closest to her own personality.

Asked how she is taking in the recent success and Kiara told IANS: “Of course, my heart is filled with gratitude but it is overwhelming as well at the same time. I mean everyone loved Dimple from ‘Shershaah’ and the box office result shows how much our audience loved ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’. This is so surreal for me to get so much love from our fans, really! I always had faith in both the films but the great thing is, it matched the expectation of the audience too!”

In the upcoming film ‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’ Kiara is playing a modern young woman who is married to her childhood sweetheart and yet on verge of divorce.

Sharing her thoughts on divorce which is otherwise stigmatised by society, Kiara said, “I think in our film, we are exactly addressing that, how complicated new-age relationship is; how a marriage between two lovers turned into divorce, only because of lack of deep communication.”

She went on adding, ” When we fight with our lovers, we tend to establish how we are right, instead of understanding the other side of the story; of course, ego comes in between. For us, we are constantly balancing between professional and personal life. Many times we tend to move on from a regular fight just to handle a temporary situation. The crack in a relationship starts from there.”

The actress says she along with the director of the film Raj Mehta and her co-star Varun Dhawan had multiple brainstorming sessions to bring the topic right to the table.

Sharing how her character Naina is close to her own personality, Kiara said, ” I think she represents the modern Indian woman. A woman does not have to feel guilty to have the ambition to be a CEO of a company and at the same time the wife of her husband and the daughter of her parents. It is equality; because the same thing even men are doing and no one is questioning how they are balancing. I strongly believe in the same philosophy.”

“I also believe that men always do not have to be the sole provider of a family, financial responsibility should be divided, so as emotional expectation. Since Naina is the believer of the same, this is the closest to who I am in real life,” added the actress.

‘Jugjugg Jeeyo’, also starring Anil Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, produced by Karan Johar, releases in theatres on June 24.

‘Rumours of Ajith, Vijay working together in a film not true’

0

If sources in the Tamil film industry are to be believed, there is no truth to rumors doing the rounds that actors Ajith and Vijay will be working together in a film shortly.

Late on Monday, a section of the media reported that director Venkat Prabhu was to direct a film in which both stars– Ajith and Vijay– would be working together. The media reports attributed this statement to music director and singer, Gangai Amaren, who also happens to be Venkat Prabhu’s dad.

The reports claimed that an official announcement about the project would be made shortly. However, sources in the know claim that no such project is on the cards.

Meanwhile, actor Ajith, who is on a vacation, is having a whale of a time, riding one of his favorite fancy bikes across Europe. Pictures of the actor in Belgium’s Bruges Market Square have gone viral on social media.

Sources say that the actor will return to India to resume shooting of director H Vinoth’s film tentatively titled #AK61 in the first week of July. He will complete shooting for the film and then return to Europe for another riding expedition.

Hardik Pandya ticked most boxes; very impressed with his captaincy: Mohammad Kaif

0

With his elevation to becoming the India captain for the two-match T20I series against Ireland, the rise of Hardik Pandya the leader has been meteoric. In IPL 2022, Pandya was the gel that kept the Gujarat Titans together in their run to the trophy in their maiden season.

Throughout the tournament, Pandya was leading Gujarat from the front, taking the charge with the bat at either number three or four, something which he hardly got to do in his previous franchise Mumbai Indians.

Pandya was the anchor Gujarat needed with the bat before unleashing his stroke play in the back end of the innings, amassing 487 in 15 innings at an average of 44.27 and strike rate of 131.26. With the ball too, he was chipping in occasionally, with his spell of 3/17 in the final at home ground in Ahmedabad proving to be match-winning.

Mohammad Kaif was also in the Narendra Modi Stadium on the day of the IPL 2022 final and was impressed with what he saw of Pandya the captain. “I was there at the ground for the finals in Ahmedabad. I saw him captaining there live. His field placement was outstanding. He is also a good man-manager because the way his players performed under pressure told me the story of nice vibes around the team.

“He’s backing his players; he was standing at mid-off and was talking to his players, especially to the bowlers when they felt the pressure in terms of bowling in death overs. If you ask me personally, I was very impressed with his captaincy. There are a lot of teams playing the IPL from the very first year (and) have not done what Hardik did: winning the IPL title as a captain in the very first year,” said Kaif in a virtual interaction organized by Sony Sports.

Does Kaif, who represented India in 125 ODIs and 13 Tests, see Pandya’s promotion to India’s captaincy as a reward for captaining and proving his leadership credentials as a Gujarat Titans skipper in IPL 2022? He strongly feels the same.

“When he captained, what I saw as a player was in Hardik Pandya, he’s ticked most boxes in captaincy. Because winning the toss, and seeing the conditions, he was spot-on (with his decision-making). Sometimes he batted first, he chased target, giving the roles to batters as well as bowlers. Also, his form was very crucial, he was batting at three, four; coming into power-play, and batted till the end apart from bowling a few overs.

“Hardik did a good job with captaincy and if you see with Gujarat Titans, you could say they were not the strongest side after the auction. Few other franchises had done a good job. But it’s about how you play and perform on the field on that day. You want to pick the best eleven to win the series (against Ireland). Hardik can do that; he has done well for Gujarat.”

Though Pandya’s role in India’s T20I side requires him to be the lower-order finisher alongside a resurgent Dinesh Karthik, Kaif sees the duo as players who will play a critical role in India’s quest of winning the Men’s T20 World Cup at Australia in October-November. In India’s 82-run win over South Africa at Rajkot, Pandya and Karthik shared a stand of 65 runs off 33 balls which proved to be decisive in the victory for the hosts.

“I have been saying that if you see the top-order, you have lots of players there like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, (Shreyas) Iyer. But to finish the game, Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik will be playing a major role as India needs finishers who can play with a higher strike rate.

“So, I see these two repeating the same things again and again. Like they did against South Africa and in the IPL as well, their form will be crucial against Ireland and when they play T20Is against England and then move forward from there. If India has to win the World Cup, they will be playing a crucial role,” said Kaif ahead of the T20I tour of Ireland, which will be broadcast on Sony Sports on June 26 and 28.

Yoga a way of life, says Modi after inaugurating Yoga Day celebrations (Ld)

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated along with thousands of people in a Mass Yoga Demonstration at the Mysore Palace ground here on the occasion of the 8th International Day of Yoga (IDY) on Tuesday and said that ‘Yoga has become a way of life.

Integrating the ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ with celebrations of 8th IDY, Mass Yoga demonstrations are being organized at 75 iconic locations across the country under the leadership of 75 Union Ministers, along with the Yoga Demonstration by the Prime Minister. The Yoga demonstrations are also being held by various educational, social, political, cultural, religious, corporate, and other civil society organizations and will be attended by crores of people across the country.

The Prime Minister’s Yoga program at Mysuru is also part of the novel program

‘Guardian Yoga Ring’, which is a collaborative exercise between 79 countries and United Nations organizations along with Indian Missions abroad to illustrate Yoga’s unifying power that surpasses National boundaries.

Since 2015, the International Day of Yoga (IDY) has been celebrated worldwide on June 21 every year. The theme for this year’s Yoga Day is “Yoga for Humanity”. The theme portrays how Yoga served humanity in alleviating suffering during the Covid Pandemic.

Governor of Karnataka Thaawarchand Gehlot, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, and Union Minister Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal were among those present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said the yogic energy, which has been nurtured for centuries by the spiritual centers of India like Mysuru, is today giving direction to global health.

“Today yoga is becoming a basis for global cooperation and is providing a belief of a healthy life to mankind,” he added. He said, “Today we see that Yoga has come out of the households and has spread all over the world and this is a picture of spiritual realization, and that of natural and shared human consciousness, especially in the last two years of an unprecedented pandemic,” PM Modi stated.

He further said, “Yoga has now become a global festival. Yoga is not only for any individual but for the entire humanity. Therefore, this time the theme of the International Day of Yoga is – Yoga for humanity.” He thanked the United Nations and all the countries for taking this theme globally.

Quoting the Indian sages, the Prime Minister emphasized “Yoga brings peace for us. The peace from yoga is not merely for individuals. Yoga brings peace to our society. Yoga brings peace to our nations and the world. And, Yoga brings peace to our universe.”

“This whole universe starts from our own body and soul. The universe starts from us. And, Yoga makes us conscious of everything within us and builds a sense of awareness,” he underlined.

The Prime Minister remarked that India is celebrating Yoga Day at a time when the country is celebrating its 75th year of Independence, the Amrit Mahotsav.

This widespread acceptance of Yoga Day, the Prime Minister said, “is the acceptance of that Amrit spirit of India which gave energy to India’s freedom struggle. That is why Mass Yoga demonstrations are being organized at 75 iconic locations across the country which have been witness to the glorious history of India and have been the center of cultural energy.”

“The experience of collective yoga at the historical sites of India is like tying together India’s past, India’s diversity, and India’s expansion”, he elaborated.

He also informed about the novel program ‘Guardian Yoga Ring’, which is a collaborative exercise between 79 countries and United Nations organizations along with Indian Missions abroad to illustrate Yoga’s unifying power that surpasses national boundaries.

“As the sun moves from the east to the west across the world, the Mass Yoga Demonstrations in the participating countries, if seen from any one point on Earth, will seem to be happening one after the other, almost in tandem, thus underlining the concept of ‘One Sun, One earth’. “These practices of yoga are giving wonderful inspiration for health, balance, and cooperation”, he added.

Modi pointed out that Yoga is not just part of life for us, today, it has become a way of life. He said Yoga need not be limited to a particular time and location.

He said, “No matter how stressful we are, a few minutes of meditation relaxes us and increases our productivity. Therefore, we do not have to take yoga as extra work. We also have to know yoga and we also have to live yoga. We also have to achieve yoga, we also have to adopt yoga. When we start living yoga, Yoga Day will become a medium for us not to do yoga, but to celebrate our health, happiness, and peace.”

The Prime Minister said that today is the time to realize the infinite possibilities associated with yoga. “Today our youth are coming in large numbers with new ideas in the field of yoga. He was informed about the Startup Yoga Challenge by the Ayush Ministry. The Prime Minister congratulated the winners of 2021 winners of ‘Prime Minister’s Awards for outstanding contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga’.”

Musk’s trans daughter to drop surname doesn’t want to ‘be related’ to him

0

Tech billionaire Elon Musk’s transgender daughter has reportedly filed a request to change her name to reflect her gender identification and avoid any ties to her biological father.

According to TMZ, one of Musk’s children wants nothing to do with him and has filed legal documents to drop his famous last name.

The documents were filed in LA County by Xavier Musk, at least that was the name she was given at birth, but now having turned 18 in April, she said she wants her name to be Vivian Jenna Wilson.

In the documents, she said she wants to be recognized as female, but the name change is not just about her transitioning, there is clearly a rift with dear ol’ Dad, the report said.

Vivian lists her reason for the name change as “gender identity and the fact that I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form”, as per the report.

Neither Musk nor Vivian has previously said anything publicly about their relationship or her transition.

Interestingly though, back in December 2020, Musk tweeted he supports the transgender community but added: “All these pronouns are an esthetic nightmare.”

Vivian has a twin brother, Griffin, and the last name Wilson comes from their mother, Canadian author Justine Wilson, who was married to Musk from 2000 to 2008.

According to the report, Vivian’s hearing on the name change is set for Friday.

Women 22% more likely to suffer from long Covid than men: Study

0

Women are “significantly” more likely to suffer from long Covid than males and will experience substantially different symptoms, finds a study, underscoring a critical need for sex-disaggregated research.

Long Covid is a syndrome in which complications persist more than four weeks after the initial infection of Covid-19, sometimes for many months.

Researchers from the Johnson & Johnson Office of the Chief Medical Officer Health of Women Team, who carried out the analysis of data from around 1.3 million patients, observed females with long Covid are presenting with a variety of symptoms including ear, nose, and throat issues; mood disorders, neurological, skin, gastrointestinal and rheumatological disorders; as well as fatigue.

Male patients, however, were more likely to experience endocrine disorders such as diabetes and kidney disorders.

The odds of females developing long Covid syndrome is 22 per cent higher than males, the researchers noted in the study published in the journal Current Medical Research and Opinion.

“Knowledge about fundamental sex differences underpinning the clinical manifestations, disease progression, and health outcomes of Covid-19 is crucial for the identification and rational design of effective therapies and public health interventions that are inclusive of and sensitive to the potential differential treatment needs of both sexes,” the researchers explained.

“Differences in immune system function between females and males could be an important driver of sex differences in long Covid syndrome. Females mount more rapid and robust innate and adaptive immune responses, which can protect them from initial infection and severity. However, this same difference can render females more vulnerable to prolonged autoimmune-related diseases,” they added.

For the study, the team reviewed 640,634 total articles amounting to 1,393,355 unique individuals.

Notably, women may also be at greater risk of exposure to the virus in certain professions, such as nursing and education, the researchers said.

Further, “there may be disparities in access to care based on gender that could affect the natural history of the disease, leading to more complications and sequela.”
