Mumbai Covid-19 doubling rate is 50 days, highest in India

0

In a significant landmark, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has achieved a doubling-rate of 50 days for Covid-19 cases, a top official said here on Monday.

This was possible because of the civic body’s ‘open testing policy’, implying tests without prescriptions, making it the only city in the country to implement it.

“After the open testing policy, our testing has gone up from 4,000 to 6,800, daily. But the total positive cases have come down from 1,400 to 1,200 now,” BMC Municipal Commissioner I.S. Chahal told IANS.

Of these 1,200 positive cases, the symptomatic cases are less than 200, so the BMC needs only 200 beds daily, the civic chief said.

Even the BMC’s discharge rate now stands at 70 percent, and on Sunday, after allotting beds to all patients, there were still 7,000 COVID beds plus 250 ICU beds lying vacant, said Chahal.

For this achievement, Chahal gave the credit to the entire ‘Team BMC’ where – despite losing a little over 100 officials to the virus – civic officials and other Corona warriors are engaged 24×7 in controlling the pandemic for over four months.

Since the first case was detected in Mumbai on March 11 (after the state’s first infectees in Pune on March 9) and the state’s first death notched in Mumbai on March 17, the current Maharashtra Covid-19 tally stands at 2,54,427 cases and fatalities at 10,289, while Mumbai has recorded 92,988 cases with a death toll of 5,288.

Travancore royal family’s rights in Padmanabhaswamy temple affairs upheld

0

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the rights of the Travancore royal family in the affairs of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple of Thiruvananthapuram.

A bench headed by U.U. Lalit said the administrative committee will manage the temple affairs while the district judge of Thiruvananthapuram will be the chairperson of the committee.

According to a lawyer associated with the matter said the shebaitship survives on the death of the ruler as per custom, and a committee under the chairmanship of the district judge, who was the executive officer appointed by the apex court, has been constituted.

“Death of ruler does not result in escheat in favor of government despite 26th amendment of Constitution,” said the lawyer, who represented the devotees.

The apex court verdict has come on a dispute over management of the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple, one of the richest temples in the country. For nearly nine years, the issues in connection with the administration and management of the historic temple have been pending in the top court.

These issues were raised following alleged charges of financial irregularities. In April last year, a bench of Justices Lalit and Indu Malhotra had reserved the verdict on the petitions challenging the January 31, 2011 verdict of the Kerala High Court.

The high court had directed the state government to take steps to constitute a trust or a body to take control of the temple, its assets, and management. The High Court also directed the state government to run the temple complying with the traditions.

In May 2011, the top court had stayed the high court’s direction.

Thailand plans to improve, upgrade airports

Thailand is planning to make improvements and upgrades of airports in some provinces with a 5.8 billion baht ($185 million) funding, a senior government official said on Monday.

Department of Airports Director-General Thawee Kesisamang said his agency has planned to improve and upgrade the airports in several southern and northeastern provinces with the funding allocated for the fiscal year 2021, reports Xinhua news agency.

The planned improvement and upgrade of the provincial airports are to accommodate international flights to and from southern China, the Middle East, and Europe, particularly those with wide-body aircraft such as Airbus A330 and Boeing 787, Thawee said.

Airport facilities and passenger terminals will be improved and upgraded as well, according to the director-general.

The provincial airports under the department’s improvement plans include those in Krabi, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani and Chumphon in the southern region and Khon Kaen, Buriram, Roi Et and Udorn Thani in the northeastern region.

Bengal BJP MLA found mysteriously hanging in his village

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Legislator in West Bengal was found hanging in his village in North Dinajpur district on Monday.

The incident happened at Bindal in Hemtabad area. MLA Debendra Nath Ray, who had joined the BJP in 2019, was found mysteriously hanging a few meters away from his home near a local market.

Earlier, he was elected on a CPI-M ticket in 2016. The family members of Ray, however, alleged that he was murdered for his political affiliation and have demanded a thorough probe into the matter.

State BJP leaders said that people are of the clear opinion that he was first killed and then hung in his village. “His crime was that he joined the BJP in 2019,” West Bengal BJP tweeted.

Senior state BJP leader Sayantan Basu said: “If an elected MLA is not safe in Bengal, what will be the safety for common people here? We will demand a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter. There is no law and order in the state.”

North Dinajpur district Trinamool Congress leader Amal Acharya dubbed it as a ‘sad incident’. “I came to know about it this morning. I am deeply saddened. He was a good man. I would urge the police administration to investigate the matter and punish the real perpetrators. This is absolutely uncalled for and whoever is guilty should be immediately punished, irrespective of any political color,” Acharya said.

Condemning the incident, BJP national General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya twitted, saying: “Ray was killed”. Vijayvargiya also raised the question of Ray’s political affiliation behind the killing.

Realme X3: Reliable buddy for gamers, camera lovers

0

Handset maker Realme that entered India only last year has created a decent space in the Indian smartphone market. Now, the company has launched its ‘Make in India’ mid-premium ‘X3’ smartphone which is power-packed with premium features.

After the success of Realme X2 in India, the company has introduced two new X Series smartphones — X3 and X3 SuperZoom.

With an attractive design, Realme X3 comes with 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+, 64MP quad-camera, 4200mAh battery, and the company’s own user interface (UI) based on Android 10 software.

Realme X3 that comes with a 2X telephoto lens promising up to 20X hybrid zoom is available in two memory variants (8GB+128GB) priced at Rs 25,999 as well as (6GB +128GB) from Rs 24,999.

The device is available in two colors – Glacier Blue and Arctic White.

We reviewed the 8GB+128GB variant. Let’s see how it fared.

The X-factor in the new Realme X3 is in its cameras, display, and design.

If you love taking photos or are into early-stage photography, this device has the potential to meet your standards with the AI quad camera and dual in-display selfie shooter.

On the back of the device, with a quad-camera setup at the top left corner along with LED flash, the X3 features an advanced 64MP main camera, 12MP telephoto lens, 8MP Ultra wide-angle lens and 2MP Macro lens that allows taking close-up shots.

The camera produced detailed and sharpened images in the daylight conditions. Even in low light, the smartphone did manage to take some really good photos with subjects being sharp.

The photos captured in the artificial lights were good. Night Mode was surprisingly effective and helped balance the brightness.

The in-built features such as Portrait Mode, Time-lapse Photography, HDR, Ultra Wide, Ultra Macro, Face Recognition, AI Beauty, Super Nightscape, and Portrait Mode add extra points to the camera.

Those who love vlogging, this smartphone can be really helpful as it creates clear and shake-free videos.

The device houses the power button with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor on the right side and the volume rockers on the left.

At the bottom, the smartphone has a dedicated space for SIM-tray, Type-C USB charging port, and Dolby Atmos speaker, which gives perfect sound quality.

The Realme X3 comes with a 6.60-inch touchscreen smooth display that has a 1080×2400 pixel resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection.

The face unlock feature worked fast as well.

On the front, the device comes with a 120Hz dual punch-hole display with 16MP wide-angle main camera and 8MP super wide-angle camera setup for selfies.

The dual-camera setup on the front made it possible for the users to take sharp and clear selfies even in low and artificial conditions.

Powered by 7nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset, the device comes with Realme own UI, and runs Android 10 operating system (OS).

The device houses a 4200mAh battery with a 30W Dart charge, which stayed for over a day on a single charge. However, it drained too fast on heavy usage.

The Realme X3 worked smoothly during daily usage, apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram worked well.

Basic tasks like playing games, watching videos, switching between apps, using multiple social media applications were smooth.
While playing games like PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty, the phone ran without glitch or slowdown. PUBG can be played smoothly with extreme and HDR settings.

Conclusion: This high-powered, mid-premium smartphone is a good choice in the mid-premium segment for both gaming and its camera features.

‘Mafia’ actress Anindita Bose: ‘My idea is to go with the flow’

Anindita Bose, who plays a pivotal role in the new web series “Mafia”, says being a Mumbai girl she has to float between the city and Kolkata to maintain her space as an actor in the Bengali entertainment industry.

“I would say I am floating in between Mumbai and Kolkata. I was born and brought up in Mumbai, and after finishing my education I went to Kolkata and started my career as an actor. I have got a huge response. The people of Kolkata have accepted me and they made me the celebrity that I am today. How can I not reciprocate to their love? But my heart is in Mumbai! Mumbai is home. Having said that, last year I bought my first property in Kolkata because I know that no matter where I travel, I would like to return to this city. So, my heart is in Mumbai, the mind is in Kolkata,” Anindita told IANS.

Starting her career in 2010 with the show “Gaaner Oparey”, her notable roles have been in films like “Clerk”, “Bhooter Bhabishyat”, “Hemlock Society”, “Cakewalk”, “Shotoroi September”.

“It is great to notice how even the Bengali audience is becoming receptive to digital content. There are Bengali language web series that have become popular. These mostly cater to the youth here and surely more experimental work will be happening,” added the actress.

Anindita has also appeared in Hindi web series like “Paatal Lok”, “Skyfire” and “Thinkistan”, before “Mafia”.

Is she planning to step into the world of Bollywood? “When I started my career, I never planned it. So my idea is to go with the flow and take baby steps. Bollywood is a bigger goal. Over the past three years, a transition has happened with so many OTT platforms making web shows with actors from every region. I also auditioned for a couple of them. I got rejected by some. I was a part of a few shows before my major role in ‘Mafia’. Hopefully, more projects will come on my way after this show,” said Anindita.

The Zee5 show “Mafia” also features Namit Das, Tanmay Dhanania, Isha M Saha, and Madhurima Roy.

The growth of cloud kitchens in India

0

There is a certain distinction in the concept and coinage of the term ‘cloud kitchen’; the concept of takeaway or delivery only, without dining, has been around for over half a century globally. While pizza and burger delivery points were prevalent in the West, in India we have the long-standing tradition of tiffin/Dabba services; these are essentially cloud kitchens and have been around for decades.

However, the term ‘cloud kitchen’ was coined about a decade and a half ago, and new terms like virtual kitchens, ghost kitchens, or invisible kitchens which essentially mean the same meaning have been coined later.

Most research and consulting reports on Indian cloud kitchens suggest that market size is expected to be about $1 billion by 2023 with a healthy double-digit growth rate every year, points out Narendra Singh Dahiya, Founder and Director, Homefoodi, a mobile application for home food made by home chefs.

“Earlier, the contribution by cloud kitchens was estimated to be 20 percent of the food delivery market. However, this percentage is changing and will undergo drastic changes in the favour of cloud kitchens,” he adds.

The Indian F&B industry is witnessing a major drift from dining into the delivery business and the pandemic has worked as a “catalyst” in the growth story.

The closure of restaurants due to the lockdown has pushed a majority of the population to opt for either home-cooked meals or depend on food brought in through deliveries.

Hence, the food delivery industry is witnessing an upward-facing graph with a surge in the number of orders and customer awareness around food safety and hygiene is increasing. Increased work-life participation of more members and the resultant paucity of time has made home cooking activity to avoid. The convenience of ordering through apps without the drudgery of going out to eat has driven the demand.

“We recorded our highest ever sales in the month of March (saw peak after the lockdown was announced). Though the last two months have been a slightly dull period of the entire industry as people were scared to order in, however, we managed to sail through it owing to our extremely loyal customer base that trusted our level of hygiene. Hygiene is a very important trust-building factor. We are at 70-75 percent of our pre-COVID-19 sales and it is growing week on week, but we expect it to pick up as and when the curve flattens,” inform Sehaj Singh Kukreja and Tushar Anand, co-founders of Cheferd Foods- the parent company of Pizza On My Plate, Burger In My Box and Deli Salad Company.

Considering the fact that setting up a cloud kitchen comes with a low Capex as compared to setting up a restaurant, it catches the eyes of new players. The set-up cost for a medium-sized cloud kitchen falls around Rs 5 lakh.

“Setting up a cloud kitchen typically requires 1/3rd of the investment required to set up a restaurant on account of lower rental costs. Profit margins are usually in the range of 10-15 percent as opposed to 5-10 percent as compared to restaurants,” informs Dahiya.

However, people who want to enter the space should not look at low Capex as a motivator, warn Kukreja and Anand.

“They should try and work out the fund requirement and cash burn for at least 5-6 months as that is the usual time that it takes for customers to start noticing a new listing on aggregator apps as compared to a head-on-visibility in a brick and mortar store,” they say.

Also, a recent research report called ‘Future of Food: Covid-19 Survival Plan’ by Indian Federation of Culinary Associations and Tagtaste says that based on the analysis and extrapolation of last available profit and loss statements and balance sheet, and subsequent interactions, an estimated 18 percent single-unit restaurants won’t be able to re-start their units. Chain-brands too run the risk of shutting down 12-15 percent of their restaurants by December 2020, it said.

With dine-in being hit badly during the lockdown, delivery is the only way to keep the brand alive for existing players, says Gautam Kumar, co-founder Keystone Solutions, a boutique turnkey contracting company, which also does complete set-up of cloud kitchen.

He reveals: “We have a lot of queries from existing restaurant operators and new players. Competition is tough generally in F&B business which has a high failure rate, however, your product will always be the winner for you.”

He adds: “The hospitality industry is at the cusp of a revolution and the fear psychosis and the spike in the cases is motivating the entrepreneurs to adapt to the changes.”

But everything comes with its own shares of challenges. The major challenge for newer players will be to create organic demand. There are various checkpoints that players consider before setting up the cloud kitchen which are:

Choosing the right location for the kitchen so that one has access to good demand from customers in the catchment area.

Deciding the right menu and pricing depending on the customer’s needs and preferences living in the area that one wishes to service.

Hiring a trained chef/cook and experienced helpers who will ensure that food cooked is healthy, fresh, and delicious and the kitchen has high cleanliness standards.

Selection of good quality and eco-friendly packaging containers so that customers get to appreciate not just the food but packaging standards.

Opting to partner with a trusted food delivery application that charges a fair commission with optimal food orders and a reliable delivery mechanism.

The Congress leaders are anxious about the outcome and many hoped an amicable solution will be worked out to pacify Pilot. The Deputy Chief Minister is in Delhi after police served him a notice to investigate a complaint filed by the Congress under sedition charges.

South Africa bans alcohol sales again to combat Covid-19

0

South Africa has introduced new restrictions, including another ban on alcohol sales, to help contain the spread of coronavirus.

A night-time curfew has been imposed, and the wearing of masks outdoors is now compulsory.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said the alcohol ban – South Africa’s second this year – would take the pressure off the national healthcare system, the BBC reported.

It comes as total infections exceed a quarter of a million.

Deaths resulting from coronavirus have also risen to more than 4,000, and government projections estimate this could rise to 50,000 by the end of the year.

South Africa remains the hardest-hit country on the continent, and earlier this week recorded its highest-ever single-day increase in cases. Nearly half of them were in Gauteng, a province that’s become the outbreak epicenter.

In a public address, Ramaphosa acknowledged “most” people had taken action to help prevent the spread, but he said there were still some who acted “without any responsibility to respect and protect each other”.

“There are a number of people who have taken to organizing parties, who have drinking sprees, and some who walk around crowded spaces without wearing masks,” said the president.

Ramaphosa said the new measures were being introduced to help the country to weather the storm of coronavirus, and a state of emergency would be extended until August 15. The night-time ban would be in place from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m.

The government has also made 28,000 hospital beds available for Covid-19 patients. But President Ramaphosa said the country still faced a “serious” shortage of more than 12,000 healthcare workers, including nurses, doctors, and physiotherapists.

The alcohol ban comes just weeks after another three-month ban was lifted in an effort to prevent drunken fighting, cut domestic violence, and eliminate weekend binge-drinking prevalent across South Africa.

Doctors and police say the previous ban contributed to a sharp drop in emergency admissions to hospital. But the country’s brewers and winemakers complained they were being driven out of business.

21 injured in US Navy ship fire in San Diego

0

A total of 21 people, including 17 sailors and four civilians, were injured in a fire on a US Navy ship at Naval Base San Diego in California, authorities said.

The injured are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital after the fire onboard USS Bonhomme Richard, according to the Naval Surface Forces, US Pacific Fleet, Xinhua news agency reported on Sunday.

“The entire crew is off the ship and all are accounted,” tweeted the Naval Surface Forces, adding that all import ships have been contacted and directed to provide fire parties to possibly assist with firefighting efforts.

Around 160 sailors were aboard the ship when the fire was called away at approximately 8.30 a.m. local time, according to the tweets.

Officials said that local, base, and shipboard firefighters are responding to the three-alarm fire and two military ships near USS Bonhomme Richard have shifted berths to a pier further away from the fire.

USS Bonhomme Richard is going through a maintenance availability and has a crew size of around 1,000, the US Navy said.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said that it is assisting on the fire onboard the Navy ship, adding the department is working in unified command with federal firefighters to put out the blaze.

Pictures from the scene showed plumes of smoke rising up over the deck of the ship.

The cause of the fire is still unclear. Some people at the scene were quoted as saying by local news outlets that they had heard an explosion. The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department tweeted earlier in the morning, “Explosion with at least one injury at the USS Bonhomme Richard.”

USS Bonhomme Richard is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship home-ported in San Diego.

Regina King on doing socially relevant yet entertaining work

Oscar-winning actress Regina King says it is always an honor to be part of a piece of work that is entertaining and socially relevant.

She cites that as the reason for being part of the television series “Watchmen”.

“It’s definitely an honor to be able to have been a part of a piece of work that was entertaining but also socially relevant,” Regina said.

“Prior to ‘Watchmen’ I had done ‘Seven Seconds’ and ‘American Crime’, and both of those shows had commentary rooted in them, around the things that are going on in our country right now. With ‘Watchmen’, it was unique because (creator) Damon (Lindelof) and the entire writing team were able to give a history lesson, infuse a bit of love story in there, shine a light on how pain is inherited, a light on police violence in our country. To do all of these things and be entertaining at the same time, and also have comedic moments, it feels like I was a part of something that’s never been done before,” she added.

With “Watchmen”, Damon Lindelof brings to life a series that embraces the nostalgia of the original graphic novel of the same name. Also starring Jeremy Irons, Don Johnson, Louis Gossett Jr., and Tim Blake Nelson, “Watchmen” explores the complexities of society while examining different real issues across time periods.

The series takes place in an alternate contemporary reality in the US, wherein superheroes and masked vigilantes were outlawed due to their violent methods, but some of them gather around to start a revolution while others attempt to stop it. It questions the notion of heroes and tries to connect the dots between a fictional take of real events.

Her character in the show, Sister Knight, has a mask on — which has found a new meaning in the post-COVID-19 era.

“So Patti sent me that picture of me wearing the mask and said to me ‘who knew that your costume was going to be our grocery store attire’. And I do step out for groceries. It is funny because of ‘Watchmen’ coming out not too long ago, people are looking for my eyes so I feel like I am being recognized even more now in the store with the mask on,” she said while opening up on the show that aired in India on Star World.

Google recently announced that the Assistant would be able to make video and audio calls with WhatsApp.

This means that one can easily access WhatsApp and some of its options by triggering the Google Assistant from the home screen on your smartphone.

The voice calls commenced by Assistant were earlier used to place a network call for the user. While video calls could be set up via Hangouts or Duo only.

If you have set up the Google Assistant app on your Android device, you may directly invoke it by saying OK Google or Hey Google.

One may also wake up the assistant app using the dedicated key, if available or by long-pressing the Home button on your device.

When Google Assistant is open, use one of the two commands, “Make a WhatsApp call to [contact-name]” or “Call [contact-name] on WhatsApp and for video call just say “Make a WhatsApp video call to [contact name]”.

Florida sets new record for daily coronavirus cases

0

The US state of Florida reported 15,299 new coronavirus cases, shattering not only its own previous single-day records but also those of any other state as the pandemic continued to rage in the country.

The mind-boggling number brought the total infections to 269,811 in the Sunshine State, with the death toll reaching 4,346, according to the Florida Department of Health on Sunday, Xinhua news agency reported.

The recent surge was the result of increased testing and widespread transmission as the state prematurely loosened lockdown measures, as a result of which people were seen gathering in crowds, no longer heeding anti-virus guidelines such as maintaining social distance or wearing face coverings.

Out of the 2,574,007 tests conducted as of Sunday, 269,811 returned positive. Meanwhile, the number of hospitalizations is also rising at an eye-popping rate, registering 18,271 in total on Sunday.

As for the positivity rate, another key parameter, the number ranged from 12.24 percent to 18.36 percent during the past two weeks, indicating that the virus is far from being brought under control.

Commenting on the positivity rate, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a Republican, said during a Saturday press briefing that it is “something we’re looking at very seriously,” adding that if the rate “gets into the single digits, that’s something that’s a lot more manageable.”

In the meantime, however, the governor doubled down on his call for reopening schools, echoing a similar demand from President Donald Trump.

“People say, ‘kids may be the vectors then, in the community’ … but it’s been found over and over again, as people have looked at this and studied this, particularly in Europe, that the school children aren’t vectors for this, for whatever reason,” DeSantis said. “They usually get infected by their parents. They’re usually not infecting adults.”

Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist, a Democrat, told CNN in an interview Saturday that schools should give parents the option of continuing online education for their kids “if they so desire,” and that when to reopen schools should primarily be the parents’ decision.

Despite the surge, the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando opened its Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom sites Saturday, asking visitors to wear masks and adhere to other safety measures. Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, also part of the amusement park complex, will reopen on July 15.
