Saudi Arabia, A country where Robots have more rights than Women!
After a robot been conferred with a ‘citizenship’, the Royal Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its government came under the firing range of Human Right activists and Women-Rights Advocate groups worldwide.
Sophia, a robot developed by the Hong Kong firm Hanson Robotics has become an instant hit. The robot became a big hit to an extent that, the Saudi government issued a citizenship to the robot, at the Future Investment Initiative that took place on 25th October in Riyadh.
Sophia addressed the audience in English without the traditional cloak. The Saudi women are obliged to wear the traditional cloak, abaya, and a headscarf in Saudi Arabia. The robot also thanked the delegates for issuing her the citizenship stating, ‘I am very proud and honored. This is historical to be the first robot to be recognized with a citizenship.’
Women-Rights Advocates and Human Right activists raised the question of ‘how can a robot be given more rights than women?’ as the picture of Sophia started circulating on social media sites. While few Saudi users on Twitter hailed the robot been given a citizenship status, others took a sarcastic tone stating ‘Sophia calls for dropping guardianship’.
It is illegal for a woman to go out in Saudi Arabia without her brother/father/husband by her side.
