IPL is home to wonders and splendours. In 2018 IPL auction, franchises shelled crores for domestic circuit players, while ignoring greats of modern day cricket. Even the Jamaican big man, Chris Gayle went unsold in the first two rounds. It was in the third round, Kings XI Punjab purchased Chris Gayle for Rs. 2 crores, his base price.
While the decision of purchasing the 38-year-old flamboyant Chris Gayle shocked everyone, Virender Sehwag, now the director and mentor of KXIP (Kings XI Punjab) have different thoughts. Speaking to a web portal, the former Indian opener explained why they Kings XI purchased Chris Gayle.
‘We wanted Gayle as our backup option for the opening slot. Given his batting style, he can prove dangerous against any opposition. His brand value speaks for himself,’ said Sehwag.
Besides Gayle, Kings XI Punjab batting line-up has star players like Yuvraj Singh, Aaron Finch, David Miller, Marcus Stoinis, KL Rahul and Karun Nair. Though Gayle is undeniable the most feared batsman while he is on the song, his magic seems to slide down with his age. Moreover, at 38, it just keeps getting harder and harder.
