Sehwag Urges BCCI: Change Indian Players’ Jersey Name to ‘Bharat:
Amidst the ongoing discussions about the government’s potential renaming of the country from India to Bharat, a move that has sparked controversy, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag has expressed his support for the name change.
In a social media message, the renowned cricketer has called upon the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to alter the name on the jerseys of Indian cricketers taking part in the upcoming ICC World Cup. “I have always believed that a name should instill pride in us. We are Bhartiyas.
India is a name bestowed by the British, and it is high time we officially revert to our original name, ‘Bharat,'” Sehwag conveyed in the post shared on X (formerly known as Twitter). Sehwag further emphasized his point by highlighting instances of other nations embracing their original names.
He mentioned that during the 1996 World Cup, the Netherlands participated as Bharat, while in 2003 when India played against them, they represented themselves as the Netherlands and have continued to do so.
Sehwag also noted that Burma had changed its name back to Myanmar, as it was originally known, and several other countries have likewise returned to their original names. Additionally, Sehwag shared an older video featuring Sadhguru, in which he discusses the scientific and cultural significance of the name and advocates for renaming the country. Sehwag’s social media post has garnered a diverse range of reactions from X users.
