YouTube has announced that it is rolling out new design elements and product features, including options to zoom in and out for videos, to enhance user experience on the platform.

The Google-owned streaming platform will allow users to zoom in and out of a video while on their iOS or Android devices.

“Starting today, we are rolling out a new look and features that offer a more modern and immersive viewing experience while also improving how users watch videos. But don’t worry, the same YouTube you know and love is still at our core,” the company said in a blog post.

Using dynamic color sampling, the ambient mode introduces a subtle effect, so the app background color adapts to match the video.

Apple Watch helps detect rare cancer in 12-yr-old girl

0

An Apple Watch has reportedly been credited with spotting a 12-year-old girl’s rare cancer before she was even aware of it, with the help of its heart rate notifications feature.

As reported by Hour Detroit, Imani Miles and her mother Jessica Kitchen now view the Apple Watch as more than just a gadget.

Imani’s mother, Jessica, noticed that her daughter’s Apple Watch started beeping constantly, alerting Imani to an abnormally high heart rate.

“That’s really weird because it’s never happened before. It just kept going off,” said the mother.

The concerned mother took her daughter to the hospital, where doctors noticed a tumor in her appendix.

It was then that they learned of a “neuroendocrine tumour” on her appendix, which according to doctors, is “rarely seen in children”, the report added.

When doctors found Imani’s tumour, it had already spread to other parts of her body, requiring her to undergo surgery to remove it.

“If the watch didn’t go off, I probably would have just waited and taken her in the next couple of days,” Kitchen was quoted as saying.

“If she didn’t have that watch, it could have been so much worse,” she added.

Imani had surgery at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in the US to remove the remaining tumor, according to the report.

Earlier this month, Apple Watch detected a 34-year-old woman’s pregnancy.

The woman on Reddit posted that the watch indicated that her average resting heart rate had significantly increased in just a few days, which made her suspect that something was off.

In July, a woman’s heart was detected with a rare tumor after she received multiple alerts that her heart was in atrial fibrillation.

50% of Indian mobile users wish to upgrade to new device in 5G era

0

About 50 percent of smartphone users in India plan to buy a new device within the first year as the 5G roll-out begins, a report has said.

India has more than 500 million smartphone users to date.

The price band of Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000 is the most preferred price band for future smartphone purchases in the country, according to Counterpoint Research.

India’s smartphone market ASP (average selling price) is expected to rise because consumers tend to prefer a higher price band for every subsequent purchase.

Samsung, Apple, and OnePlus is at the top as the survey respondents preferred smartphone brands for the next purchase, the report noted.

In terms of features, 5G capability is the third most important feature considered when planning the next purchase. The same factor is ranked tenth in terms of importance for current smartphone purchases.

“When purchasing a new smartphone, more than one-third of the users plan to retain their current device as an alternative/secondary phone. Also, with more exchange offers available, more than one-fourth of the respondents plan to trade in their current smartphone when purchasing the next one,” said research analyst Arushi Chawla.

Samsung users have the strongest brand loyalty with 51 percent of the users who used Samsung as their previous device also using Samsung currently.

Apple, despite having a smaller share in previous and current smartphone purchases, is the second most preferred brand (20 percent) for future purchases, said the report.

“In addition, 5G capability becomes more important as we move up the ladder for budget preference for future smartphones. 5G is one of the main factors taken into consideration by all major smartphone brands. But 5G is the most important factor for respondents preferring Apple as their next smartphone purchase,” said Chawla.

Google introduces Clear Calling feature on Pixel 7 series

0

Tech giant Google has introduced a new feature called “Clear Calling” in its latest beta update for Pixel 7 series users to improve call clarity.

The call quality enhancer is available for those who download the Android 13 QPR1 (Quarterly Platform Release) beta 3 software update.

According to the Android Authority, during Google’s Pixel launch event earlier this month, the company also unveiled a few new software features coming to the handsets.

As part of those features, Clear Calling was developed, which “automatically filters out background noise and enhances the voice on the other end of the line with machine learning, making it easier to hear the person on the other end of the line, even when they are walking on a windy street or dining in a noisy restaurant,” said Google in a blog post.

Users can find this feature in their sound settings if they install the Android 13 QPR1 beta. Simply scroll down to settings, tap on sound & vibration, and then find Clear Calling. Users can toggle Clear Calling on or off once they enter the page.

Users will need to sign up for Google’s beta program before they can get started. There may be bugs and errors in this update due to it being an unstable version, the report added.

Earlier, the company said it is available at launch in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. However, Snapchat mentioned expanding the feature to more countries over time.

The company claims that over 332 million people worldwide use Snapchat every day.

Countdown for ISRO’s historic GSLV MkIII rocket mission with 36 OneWeb satellites begins on Saturday

0

The countdown for the historic launch of the Indian rocket Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle MkIII (GSLV MkIII) will begin at 12.07 a.m. on Saturday, said a senior official of the Indian space agency.

The rocket will be carrying 36 small broadband communication satellites of Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) to sling them in low earth orbit on October 23.

OneWeb is a joint venture between India Bharti Global and the UK government.

The satellite company plans to have a constellation of 650 satellites in low earth orbit (LEO) to offer communication services.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) had earlier said the rocket will lift off with 36 satellites at 12.07 a.m. on October 23.

“The countdown for the rocket’s liftoff will begin 24 hours before its flight,” an ISRO official told IANS.

During the countdown, the rocket and satellite systems will be checked. The fuel for the rocket will also be filled.

For ISRO, the mission is historic because, for the first time in its history, a GSLV rocket will be used for a commercial launch.

The GSLV MkIII is a three-stage rocket with the first stage fired by solid fuel, the second by liquid fuel, and the third is the cryogenic engine.

The ISRO’s heavy-lift rocket has a carrying capacity of 10 tons to the LEO and four-ton to the Geo Transfer Orbit (GTO).

“The total launch mass of OneWeb satellites will be six tonnes,” an official told IANS.

The 36 satellites will be on a dispenser system made by the Swiss-based Beyond Gravity, formerly RUAG Space.

Beyond Gravity had earlier provided the satellite dispensers for launching 428 OneWeb satellites to Arianespace.

“The dispenser with 36 satellites was supplied by the vendor. It was used in all their earlier launches,” an ISRO official told the media.

For Beyond Gravity, this is the first time their dispenser is fitted in an Indian rocket.

Starting in 1999, ISRO has put into orbit 345 foreign satellites to date.

The successful launch of 36 OneWeb satellites will take the tally to 381.

Another set of 36 satellites from OneWeb is planned to be put into orbit in January 2023.

“One additional launch will take place this year and three more are targeted for early next year to complete the constellation,” OneWeb had said.

This launch brings OneWeb’s constellation to 462 satellites, more than 70 percent of the satellites required for OneWeb to reach global coverage.

This milestone will activate a new phase of OneWeb’s launch program, in pursuit of its mission to bridge the digital divide around the world. The company remains on track to activate global coverage in 2023 – with coverage solutions already live in regions north of 50 degrees latitude, OneWeb said.

Bharti Enterprises, a major investor and shareholder in OneWeb, this year announced a distribution partnership with Hughes Communications India Private Ltd.

The NewSpace India Ltd (NSIL) the commercial arm of ISRO has signed two contracts with Network Access Associated Ltd (OneWeb) for launching the latter’s broadband communication satellites in low earth orbit.

Another set of 36 satellites from OneWeb is planned to be put into orbit in January 2023.

Earlier, the OneWeb satellites were launched by Russian rockets. Following Russia’s military action against Ukraine, OneWeb decided to look at other rockets.

In a way, it is Russia’s loss and India’s gain.

Space sector experts had earlier told the media that the US and Europe’s economic sanctions against Russia for its military action in Ukraine may throw up economic opportunities for the Indian space sector, instead of burdening it with economic costs.

They also said that to cash in on the opportunities, India should accelerate its satellite launch capabilities, and announce productivity-linked incentive (PLI) schemes for the aerospace sector.

“All those countries feeling the pinch due to the absence of Russian rockets for satellite launches may look at alternatives. While the bulk of the satellite launch contracts will be taken by the US and Europe, there will be others who may look at other options. India’s neutrality has created a new market segment,” Chaitanya Giri, Founder, of DAWON Advisory & Intelligence, told Media.

The board of OneWeb — jointly owned by India’s Bharti Global and the UK government — had voted to suspend satellite launches from the Baikonur rocket port in Russia.

Meanwhile, the Sunday rocket mission has several firsts for the Indian space sector. They are: (a) The first commercial launch of GSLV MkIII (b) the First time an Indian rocket will be ferrying a payload of about six tonnes (c) First-time OneWeb is using an Indian rocket to put its satellites into orbit (d) the First commercial launch of GSLV MkIII contracted by NSIL, the commercial arm of the Indian space sector and (e) First-time GSLV MkIII or its variants is being used for launching satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

Instagram introduces new feature to protect users from abuse

0

Instagram has rolled out new features to protect users from abuse, along with updates to Hidden Words.

Now if you block someone, you will have the option to block additional accounts they may have to make it more difficult for them to connect with you again, the company said in a blog post.

Based on the findings of the first tests for this new change, the company expects that four million fewer accounts will need to be blocked each week since these accounts will now be blocked automatically.

Since it launched last year, more than one in five people with a minimum of 10,000 followers have turned on the Hidden Words feature.

Hidden Word is an effective tool for automatically removing damaging content from message requests and comments.

According to the company, 40 percent fewer comments on average might be offensive.

The company is starting to test automatically turning on Hidden Words for Creator accounts.

Every user will be able to turn the settings on or off at any time and make a customized list with additional words, phrases, and emojis they might want to hide.

Now, a new notification will encourage the users to pause and think about how they want to respond before replying to a comment that might be offensive.

The application also reminds people to be respectful in direct chats when sending a message request to a creator, the company said.
