Grandi checked relief efforts being provided to Refugees
It is unfortunate to hear about the ongoing conflict in Sudan and the impact it has had on the people fleeing the violence. Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), visited the border crossing between Egypt and Sudan to assess the relief efforts being provided to the thousands of displaced individuals. During his visit, Grandi expressed gratitude to the Egyptian government for receiving Sudanese and other people seeking refuge from the violence in Khartoum.
The armed clashes between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces have resulted in a significant number of casualties. According to data released by the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate, at least 866 civilians have been killed, and 3,721 others have been wounded since April 15. In response, Grandi made an appeal to the military factions involved, urging them to stop the fighting and consider the suffering of their own people.
Accompanied by the governor of Egypt’s southern province of Aswan, Grandi toured the border crossing to assess the situation firsthand. Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi also addressed the issue, stating that Egypt has received 150,000 Sudanese citizens who have fled the conflict, in addition to hosting five million Sudanese already. President al-Sisi called upon relief agencies and donor states to provide the necessary support to Sudan’s neighboring countries to sustain their efforts in accommodating the Sudanese evacuees.
During his three-day visit to Egypt, Grandi is scheduled to meet with President al-Sisi and the Cairo-based Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit. These meetings aim to discuss the ongoing crisis in Sudan and explore ways to address the refugee situation and provide necessary assistance.
