UP police reaction towards wrestlers’ protest
The Samajwadi Party (SP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), and the UP Congress Committee have strongly criticized the government for detaining protesting wrestlers at the Jantar Mantar Dharna site in Delhi.
Akhilesh Yadav, the SP chief, accused the BJP of making empty promises about women’s safety and dignity in order to gain votes. Shivpal Singh Yadav, SP national general secretary, expressed his disappointment with the incident, highlighting the image of a woman wrestler with the Indian flag being dragged by the police.
Swami Prasad Maurya, another SP national general secretary, accused the BJP of moving towards a monarchy and urged the Prime Minister to stop insulting the brave daughters of India. Jayant Chaudhary, RLD president, stated that autocracy would not be tolerated. The UP Congress Committee criticized the government by sharing a video of wrestler Vinesh Phogat shouting, “Congratulations for the new country!” while being detained, questioning the nation’s state.
The Delhi Police detained the wrestlers and their supporters for attempting to march towards the new Parliament building, demanding the arrest of the Wrestling Federation of India chief on charges of sexual harassment. The protesters were forcibly removed and taken to undisclosed locations by the police.
