The HRD Ministry stated that 300 engineering colleges would be shut down from 2018 – 2019 academic session and no new admission process for fresh intake will be allowed.
According to a senior HRD ministry officials, ‘over 300 engineering colleges have failed to fill more than 30% seats for the past 5 consecutive years. Over 500 other colleges have come under the scanner of UGC for failing to fill the seats. The intake of nearly 800 Engineering colleges is less than 50%.’
‘We are looking at various aspects while shutting down the colleges. Engineering colleges with less than 30% intake are given alternative options. We are asking them to convert the engineering colleges to vocational educational institution or science colleges. The college managements might have bank loans and invested money. We are taking a holistic view in this matter,’ said Dr. Sahasrabudhe, Chairperson of the AICTE.
Out of these 300 colleges with less than 30% intake, over 150 colleges have less than 20% intake. The official website of AICTE lists 3,000 Engineering colleges with a capacity of 13.56 lakh engineering seats.
