According to market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR), 5G smartphone shipments in India surpassed 100 million in May, setting a record as the country’s 5G roll-out continues at a rapid pace. The data reveals that 5G smartphone shipments have grown more than 28 times since their initial introduction. In May, 5G smartphones accounted for 48% of the smartphone market, with Samsung leading the 5G market, followed closely by OnePlus and Vivo. Together, these three brands captured a combined 5G market share of 60%.

5G market is expected to grow by over 70% year-on-year by the end of this year

As the 5G roll-out expands across most regions in India, the 5G market is expected to grow by over 70% year-on-year by the end of this year. The Indian smartphone market has witnessed more than a thirteen-fold increase in 5G shipments since its introduction in 2020. In 2022, nearly 100 5G smartphones were launched in the Indian market.

To drive mass adoption of 5G in India, the availability of affordable 5G phones (priced below Rs 10,000) will be crucial, as highlighted in a previous CMR study. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have already started rolling out their 5G networks in India since October 2022 and have covered a significant portion of the country.
