He is not the right choice as the captain – Graeme Smith (SA Ex-captain)

Former South Africa cricket Captain Graeme Smith came down hard on the selection of Markram as the captain for the ongoing series between India and South Africa. Markram was made the captain, after regular captain Faf du Plessis was ruled out due to an injury.

Speaking at a press conference, Smith said, ‘I personally don’t think Markram was the right choice as the captain in Faf du Plessis’s absence. Everyone is discussing on the same topic after South Africa lost to India by 5-1 in the ODI series. How can the team management make someone who played less than 10 ODIs the captain of the team? The player comes under immense pressure due to this. The same happened in the case of Markram too.

This is the main reason for Markram failing as a batsman in the last few matches. To counterattack India, South Africa doesn’t have any Plan B or Plan C. They have failed repeatedly in building partnerships.’

After the 5-1 ODI loss, South Africa lost the 1st T20 international too. JP Duminy is captaining the team for the T20 Series against India. Faf du Plessis was completely ruled out after the 1st ODI. South Africa will play India in the 2nd T20I on Wednesday.
