Cheptegei wins the 10,000 m world championship three times in consecutive seasons.
On Sunday, Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda secured his third consecutive men’s 10,000m world title with a season’s best performance of 27 minutes and 51.42 seconds. The 26-year-old Cheptegei surged ahead in the final lap, comfortably taking first place, although his time fell short of his own world record of 26:11.00.
Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenso claimed the silver medal with a time of 27:52.60, and Ethiopia’s Solemn Brega won the bronze, finishing just 0.12 seconds behind.
Expressing his excitement and pride, Cheptegei mentioned that winning his third consecutive world title was a fantastic way to end the season. He also hinted that this could potentially be his last track championship, making the gold medal even more significant.
In the men’s 100m, the highlight event of the World Championships, defending champion Fred Kerley unexpectedly exited during the semifinals. However, his fellow American, Noah Lyles, took the spotlight by setting this year’s best time of 9.83 seconds.
Lyles commented that he had come to the competition with the goal of winning three gold medals, and although he achieved one, he was looking forward to defending his 200m title in Budapest. He described the 100m as the toughest event and expressed his excitement about competing in the event he loves.
