The Global South’s top concern is the development
During his virtual address at the G20 development ministers’ meeting in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the importance of growth for the Global South. He acknowledged the severe impact of the Covid pandemic on these countries and attributed the food, fuel, and fertilizer crises to geopolitical tensions.
PM Modi emphasized that decisions made by the ministers would have significant implications for humanity as a whole. He urged them to prevent the sustainable progress goals from falling behind and called for a strong message from the Global South on the required action plan.
The Prime Minister stressed the need for comprehensive, inclusive, fair, and sustainable efforts, including increased investment to achieve the SDGs and finding solutions to address the debt risks many countries face. He also suggested reforms in multilateral financial institutions to expand eligibility criteria for better access to finance.
PM Modi highlighted India’s efforts in improving people’s lives in over a hundred Aspirational Districts, which have become catalysts of growth in the country. He encouraged the G20 development ministers to study this model of development.
