citizens who are living in the western and eastern Mumbai’s outlying districts reported an anonymous odor, provoking rumors of a gas leak at the Rashtriya Chemical Fertiliser’s plant in the Chembur suburb, officials disclosed.
The Municipal Corporation said late on Thursday that the odor was suspected from Powai, Chembur, Mankhurd, Govandi, Chandivali, Andheri and Ghatkopar areas.
A police official said no injuries were identified yet.
A fire brigade representative said the unidentified odor was also reported from area neighboring the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in northern suburb Borivli.
Nine fire engines were sent at different places to locate out the source of leakage, the official said.
The BMC, though, has claimed that there is no gas leakage. The municipal body’s chief Praveen Pardeshi said, “All the public who were called on phone by tragedy administration division confirmed no further smell. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and fire brigade tools also detected no gas leak anywhere.”
The Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), which supplies piped gas in Mumbai, had said in a report that it had been getting complaints of gas odor from different parts of Mumbai.
“Our emergency teams have reached the sites from where the complaints have been established. So far, we have not come across any violation in our pipeline structure which could result in leakage of gas,” it said.
BMC representative had also said, “To mark out the origin of the suspected gas leak, we deployed fire engines at Deonar, Mankhurd, Chembur, Vikhroli, Dindoshi, Vile Parle, Kandivali and Dahisar areas”.
“A total of 29 complaints were acknowledged by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) control room concerning an unknown smell, which has noticeably reduced now,” he said.
Four emergency vans of MGL were also mobilized, the official said.
