Former South African cricket star Herschelle Gibbs is making a comeback to the sport as he captains the Red Carpet Delhi team in the inaugural edition of the Indian Veteran Premier League (IVPL).
Gibbs, renowned for his aggressive batting style, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the Red Carpet Delhi squad, set to compete from February 23 to March 3, 2024, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun.
Alongside Gibbs, Red Carpet Delhi boasts former Afghanistan cricketer Asghar Afghan, Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera, and South African spinner Imran Tahir as its icon players. The team also features former IPL champion Manvinder Bisla.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the IVPL, Gibbs stated, “I’m thrilled to announce my participation in the Indian Veteran Premier League. Representing Red Carpet Delhi is an exciting opportunity, and I can’t wait to showcase my skills on the field.”
Organized by the Board for Veteran Cricket in India (BVCI) and managed by 100 Sports, the IVPL promises an exhilarating cricketing spectacle, featuring renowned veterans such as Sehwag, Munaf Patel, Suresh Raina, and Chris Gayle.
Praveen Tyagi, Acting President of BVCI and Chairman of IVPL, expressed delight at having Gibbs join the league, stating, “Fans are eagerly anticipating Gibbs’ explosive batting. We look forward to witnessing him and other veterans display their talents on the IVPL stage.”
The IVPL will see teams like VVIP Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan Legends, Chhattisgarh Warriors, Telangana Tigers, and Mumbai Champions competing alongside Red Carpet Delhi. With iconic players from across the globe, each team promises to deliver thrilling cricketing action.
Matches will be broadcast live on the Eurosport channel, DD Sports, and Fancode, with tickets for matches at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium available for purchase soon.
