After Sri Lanka started the Day 4 at 356/9 in the 3rd Test, the visitors lost their final wicket after adding 17 more runs to the overnight score. Chandimal was the final wicket. After scoring a match-saving 164, Chandimal got out after holing out to Shrikar Dhawan at third man in Ishant Sharma’s bowling. Sri Lanka scored 373/10 wickets in their first innings, handing out a lead of 163 to India.

India lost Vijay (9) while the score was 10. He got out in pursuit of some quick runs. Later, Ajinka Rahane who was promoted up the batting order continued his bad form and got out for 10 runs. This is the highest for Rahane in this 3-match test series. Pujara who joined Dhawan for the third wicket established a 77-run partnership for the third wicket. He got out at 49 (66 balls), missing his half-century. After the fall of Pujara’s wicket, Dhawan started scoring at a brisk pace. Dhawan fell for a well-made 67. Kohli was the last wicket to go down at 234/5. He scored 50 runs (of 58 balls). India declared their second innings at 246/5 after Rohit Sharma got his 50* in just 49 balls.

Sri Lanka started their second innings rather in a solid way. India got the first breakthrough after Mohammed Shami’s nicked the glove of Samarawickrama for the penultimate ball of the 6th over. The last over of the day saw two wickets from Jadeja. After Karunaratne edge the ball to keeper Saha, Jadeja bowled Lakmal who came as a night watchman. The day ended with Sri Lanka at 31/3 requiring another 379 runs to win with 7 wickets in hand on the last and final day of the test. Angelo Mathews joined Silva in the middle.
