In many of his interviews, ‘Rangasthalam’ movie director Sukumar stated that, after he thought of Ram Charan in the lead role, it was Jagapathi Babu whom he thought the next. ‘After keeping Ram Charan, and Jagapathi Babu in mind, I then thought of the rest of the cast’, said Sukumar many time. That is the kind of role Jagapathi Babu has delivered on the screen.
Talking about his role in the movie, Jagapathi Babu said, ‘the sarpanch role is quite challenging for various reasons. Starting for the getup, the dialogue diction, and subtle emotions. The typical white Lungi, Khaddar Baniyan, and piping a tobacco cigar.
I give the maximum marks for the Sarpanch role in all the characters I have played so far. The way Sukumar designed the character is brilliant. While I was doing the dubbing for the role, I myself wanted to kill the sarpanch. That is how great Sukumar designed the role.
This is one of the roles that I remember forever in my life’.Along with Ram Charan’s performance as ‘Chitti Babu’, Jagapathi Babu received critical appraise for his performance as the village sarpanch.
