KTR Appeals for Justice in the Case of Jaahnavi Kandula’s Death in Seattle:
Telangana Information Technology (IT) Minister K T Rama Rao (KTR) has urged both the U.S. Ambassador in India, Eric Garcetti, and India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, to investigate the tragic road accident in the USA that resulted in the death of a Telugu student, Jaahnavi Kandula, from Andhra Pradesh.
K T Rama Rao expressed his deep disturbance and profound sadness over the insensitive and objectionable remarks made by U.S. police officers regarding the incident. He called upon the U.S. Ambassador in India and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to address this matter with U.S. government authorities and ensure justice for Jaahnavi Kandula’s grieving family.
Additionally, the Minister appealed to the Union External Affairs Minister to engage with his U.S. counterpart and demand an impartial investigation into the incident. He emphasized the tragedy of a young and ambitious life being abruptly cut short, further noting the shock and dismay surrounding the valuation placed on her life.
The incident involved the unfortunate demise of 23-year-old student Jaahnavi Kandula, a native of Adoni in Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. She lost her life in a road accident on January 25, 2023, when her vehicle was struck by a Seattle Police car. During the aftermath of the accident, Seattle police officers were captured on body-worn cameras conversing about the incident. These recordings and videos of the incident subsequently circulated widely on social media.
Jaahnavi traveled to the USA in 2021 to pursue her higher education and was enrolled in a Master’s degree program in Information Systems at Northeastern University’s Seattle campus.
