What a delightful personality, writes Tharoor after meeting Mahesh Babu

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who is leading the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology on its study visit to Hyderabad, on Wednesday ran into leading Tollywood actor Mahesh Babu at a five-star hotel here.

“What a delightful personality,” tweeted Tharoor after the meeting with the actor.

“Talking to MaheshBabu @urstrulyMahesh shows you why no one in Hyderabad refers to him without the honorific ‘Superstar’! He had just finished knocking out the villain in his next production when we had a chat behind the scenes,” wrote Tharoor who posted a video of the meeting.

“As it happens, at our hotel in Hyderabad, the @TridentHyd, I ran into Superstar MaheshBabu @urstrulyMahesh along with my colleague (& his brother-in-law) @JayGalla, a member of the Committee. What a delightful personality!” he tweeted.

Galla Jayadev, a member of Lok Sabha, belongs to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

The Parliamentary committee members also planted saplings at Shiparamam as part of Green India Challenge initiated by Rajya Sabha member Joginpally Santosh Kumar.

They appreciated the TRS MP for his novel initiative and called upon all to carry forward the Green India Challenge.

Tharoor, while appreciating the efforts of Santosh Kumar, felt that the fruits of the saplings we plant may be enjoyed by the next generations and that nation building is also the same.

Mohanlal announces new film with Shaji Kailas after 12 yrs

After superstar Mammootty made headlines for the past two days on account of his 70th birthday, his onscreen arch-rival Mohanlal hogged the limelight on Wednesday by announcing that he is teaming up with one of Malayalam film’s first blockbuster directors, Shaji Kailas, for a new project after a gap of 12 years.

Incidentally, it was Kailas’ mega hit ‘Aaram Thampuran’ (1997) which fetched Mohanlal the tag of being the second superstar in Malayalam films after Mammootty.

Following that mega hit, Lal, as Mohanlal is known in the industry circles, did not look back as his career reached greater heights in the subsequent years.

Soon after ‘Aaram Thampuran’ Lal did a bunch of films with Kailas, the last of which — ‘Red Chillies’ — was released in 2009.

However, after that Kailas found the going tough. He even tried his hands in Tamil films, without much success though.

But after Lal on Wednesday broke the news of teaming up again with Kailas on social media, all eyes are now on Kailas.

“The wait is finally over! It’s with great excitement and happiness that I announce my next project with Shaji Kailas which starts rolling in Oct 2021. The film scripted by Rajesh Jayram and produced by Antony Perumbavoor under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas has me and Shaji getting together after 12 long years. I am sure it’s going to be worth the wait,” Lal wrote on social media.

It would be the 56-year-old director’s 42nd film in a career that started in 1989.

Neha, Tony Kakkar set to enter ‘Bigg Boss OTT’ house as special guests

This ‘Sunday Ka Vaar’ episode will see siblings Neha Kakkar and Tony Kakkar enter the house of ‘Bigg Boss OTT’ as special guests.

It will be interesting to see how both will be playing different games with the housemates and talking about their favourite connections. Neha and Tony will also be interacting with the host Karan Johar.

Bollywood singer Neha Kakkar and her brother Tony Kakkar are already in news as their new song ‘Kanta Laga’ has been released. This song has been making a splash on the internet as soon as it came out.

Both will also be interacting with the contestants also. As all contestants are playing single now with no connection, no strings attached in the house, it would be more intriguing to see the reactions of the housemates and whom Neha and Tony choose as their favourite ones.

Meanwhile, in the recent episodes Bigg Boss announced the nomination task in which the already safe contestants – Nishant and Raqesh got the power to give any two nominated contestants a disadvantage right in the beginning of the task, and the decision had to be taken with “Apsi Sehemati” (mutual agreement).

After several disagreements, finally, the two nominated Neha and Pratik. It was shocking for Pratik to know that Raqesh had taken his name, Pratik got angry with Raqesh but that was his decision. Finally Neha, Pratik, Moose, Divya and Shamita were nominated.

‘Bigg Boss OTT’ is streaming on Voot.

‘Thalaivi’: Kangana, Arvind Swamy shine in Jaya biopic, but it could be more rounded

Being Jayalalithaa is not easy. A woman who went from being a reluctant actress to one of the most powerful politicians in the country. A woman with a chequered romance with one of the most charismatic actor-leaders in the country. A woman forever frozen now in our minds and hearts as a gigantic cut-out on Marina Beach.

For far too long Jayalalithaa was overshadowed, in the male-dominated politics of Tamil Nadu, by the friendship-turned-rivalry of MG Ramachandran and M. Karunanidhi, immortalised on-screen by Mani Ratnam’s magnificent ‘Iruvar’ (1997). Her excavation began with Siimi Garewal’s iconic interview, which was the centrepiece of Gowtham Vasudev Menon’s 2020 web series ‘Queen’, and one hoped ‘Thalaivi’ would complete it.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t in full measure. As Thalaivi, Kangana Ranaut is competent, but one has come to expect much more from the actress. For some reason, she doesn’t seem to inhabit fully the early Jayalalithaa. She is far better as Amma, the politician, the able deputy who outstrips her master. As a result the early part of the film, while colourful and grand, is reduced to a costume ball, where Ranaut and the brilliant Arvind Swamy try hard to imitate Jaya and MGR, instead of inhabiting the spirit of their characters.

And in underlining Jaya’s journey from Ammu, as the MGR character calls her, to Amma, which the people of the state call her, the film reduces Karuna, as he’s called in the movie, to a moustache-twirling villain played by Nassar, who had, memorably, played Annadurai in ‘Iruvar’. He has none of the poetry of Prakash Raj ‘Iruvar’, spouting instead a ridiculous ditty called ‘Mera yaar’ at a party meeting — which is odd, given that the dialogues are written by Rajat Arora. The same goes for the complex politics of the state, which is reduced to being seen through the prism of misogyny.

While that is important, it renders the movie somewhat flat. Almost her entire journey is seen only through the lens of gender, whether it is the cavalier way she is sometimes dispensed with in movies to make way for other heroines; or the way she is treated by male colleagues.

That is not to say the film doesn’t have its moments. Kangana is best when she has her back against the wall, going on the rampage against officials serving stale food for mid-day meals, or being molested in the Vidhan Sabha, which allows her to launch into a dialogue comparing herself to Draupadi and Karuna’s army to the Kauravas. Raj Arjun is excellent as the sinister R.M. Veerappan, who wants to control MGR’s life and career. “‘Bhagwan ke darshan keiye jate hain, unke paas nahin jate’. Minimum six inches distance,” he says to a rather excitable newbie.

For Jaya, MGR is her mother, her father, her God, her guru, she says. For MGR, Jaya is both a reminder of his past, his first wife, as well of his future, because of her youth. She is also the student who learnt a little too well from her master. “If you give your people love, they will respond in equal measure,” he says. The tragedy of Jayalalithaa was that perhaps that was the most authentic relationship in her life.

Tollywood drugs case: Actor Rana Daggubati appears before ED

Tollywood actor Rana Daggubati on Wednesday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering probe linked to a 2017 drug case.

The ‘Baahubali’ fame actor reached the ED office here around 10 a.m. and walked in as a posse of security personnel escorted him through a battery of media lensmen vying with each other to capture the moment.

Rana is likely to be questioned by ED sleuths about his bank details and financial transactions as part of the probe into suspected links of some celebrities with the accused involved in the case.

Rana is the fifth Tollywood personality to appear before ED. Director Puri Jagannadh and actors Charmee Kaur, Rakul Preet Singh and Nandu were questioned since August 31.

The ED had last month issued notices to 10 persons connected to Tollywood and two others including a private club manager as part of a money laundering probe linked to the case related to the smuggling of ‘Class A’ narcotic substances, including LSD and MDMA.

Nandu was questioned for more than eight hours on Tuesday. Main accused in the case Calvin Mascarenhas and two others were also grilled by the ED sleuths on Tuesday.

Actors Ravi Teja, Navdeep. Mumaith Khan, Tanish and Ravi Teja’s driver Srinivas have also been summoned by the ED in connection the drugs racket which was busted with the arrest of drug peddlers in 2017.

Rana and Rakul Preet did not figure in the list of Tollywood celebrities questioned by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Telangana’s prohibition and excise department in 2017.

However, Rakul Preet was questioned by the Narcotics Control Bureau, Mumbai, last year in an alleged drugs nexus in Bollywood.

The drugs racket was busted on July 2, 2017 when customs officials arrested Calvin Mascarenhas, a musician, and two others and seized drugs worth Rs 30 lakh from their possession.

They had reportedly told the investigators that they are supplying drugs to film celebrities, software engineers, and even students of some corporate schools. Mobile numbers of some Tollywood celebrities were allegedly found in their contact lists.

The excise department had constituted SIT for a comprehensive probe. A total of 12 cases were registered, 30 people were arrested while 62 individuals including 11 people connected with Tollywood were examined by the SIT under section 67 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and section 161 of Criminal Procedure Code.

The SIT had collected blood, hair, nail and other samples from some of those who appeared before it for question and sent them for analysis.

The SIT filed charge sheet in eight out of 12 cases. It, however, gave clean chit to the film personalities who were questioned as part of the investigation.

Saif Ali Khan: Horror comedy genre in danger of getting over exposed

His one-liners set the audience rolling on the floor laughing with his performance as ‘Boris’ in ‘Go Goa Gone’ and he is now all set to tickle the funny bone once again with his performance in ‘Bhoot Police’, a horror comedy, a genre which actor Saif Ali Khan feels is in danger of getting over exposed.

A slew of horror comedies such as ‘Phone Bhoot’ and ‘Atithi Bhooto Bhava’ are set to release after ‘Bhoot Police’.

Talking to IANS, Saif spoke about the sudden spotlight on the genre.

“I think it is in danger of getting over exposed and you have to find a way to make it different. Also I think a lot of the situations tend to be similar and we have to put our minds to it now and come up with a different looking and feeling ghost,” Saif, who is the son of veteran actress Sharmila Tagore and late star cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, said.

The 51-year-old star finds horror comedy an exciting genre.

“But one film has started to look a little bit like another because I think the ghost is looking the same. That is a great cause of concern and I think we all need to wake up to that. I think we made an effort in our film to be different in that sense,” he said.

Saif agrees that the genre is popular among all age groups.

“I think there is something nice about being scared and not so scared and mixing that up with a good laugh. That extreme of emotion is something that people enjoy. Sometimes opposites become quite interesting,” he said.

‘Bhoot Police’, which also stars Arjun Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Yami Gautam, Jaaved Jaafri, and Jamie Lever, will release on September 10 on Disney+ Hotstar.

Saif is not very excited about an OTT release because he feels happy with the work he has done in the movie.

“Well, this is why I don’t like to make plans in my career because everything was going really quite well after ‘Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior’, ‘Jawani Jaaneman’ and ‘Bunty Babli’. This was supposed to be a nice cinematic event that would translate to a step up in life in terms of career and work…So, it is a little disappointing,” he said.

“Ideally you make a horror comedy because you want people to watch it in a communal atmosphere in a theatre but having said that we are very lucky as actors that we have another medium to display our work,” Saif, who is married to actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, added.

The actor feels grateful and happy that people are going to see their work.

He says it is “one of my better performances”.

Saif concluded: “I think it is a good movie. In a way, I am disappointed that it is not coming to theatres and we are in the middle of a pandemic and everybody’s disappointed about that…is another way of me saying I am very proud of the movie. It would have been nice in theatres.”
