Pakistan TV Channels Go Off Air After Police Crackdown On Islamist Party ProtestsOn Saturday, Pakistan authorities ordered all private television channels to shut down and go off air during a police and paramilitary crackdown on Islamist protesters in Islamabad.
According to the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, the media was violating all rules and regulations and showing live coverage of a security operation. This was totally uncalled for a statement from the regulator said. State-run Pakistan Television continued to broadcast but aired a talk show that discussed politics.
More than 100 people were hurt in the operation and one policeman died in an attempt to disperse Islamist activists who have been occupying main highways leading to the capital Islamabad.
The images showed smoke and tear gas filled the air, as roughly 8500 elite police and paramilitary troops were seen throwing rocks and using slingshots to clear 2000 or so hard line demonstrators as they were moved to clear a protest by religious hardliners who have blocked main routes to Islamabad for more than two weeks now.
These protestors are demanding the resignation of law minister Zahid Hamid. Keeping in view of the situation, the Islamabad court, on Friday issued a warning to all protestors to disperse or else can face severe consequences.
