Chidambaram, In Custody, Taken To AIIMS After Stomach Ache Complaint

0

P Chidambaram was taken to Delhi’s premier AIIMS hospital this evening after he complained of a stomach ache. The former Finance Minister is in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate in the INX Media case. He was later discharged and taken back to the investigating agency’s office.

Mr Chidambaram, during a court hearing last week, requested two-day bail so that he could go to Hyderabad for treatment of his acute stomach pain. He had said that his custody could continue after the treatment.

The Enforcement Directorate, however, said the 74-year-old Congress leader could be taken to AIIMS or All India Institute of Medical Science for any health needs.

This morning, Mr Chidambaram was taken to the RML hospital. After he complained of a stomach ache, he was taken in the evening to AIIMS.

Mr Chidambaram is in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate till October 30.

He was shifted from the Tihar jail to the agency’s custody earlier this month.

The Enforcement Directorate had asked for seven-day custodial interrogation of Mr Chidambaram.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Enforcement Directorate, had opposed the request and said it would be a serious miscarriage of justice if the agency’s investigation was curtailed.

Mr Mehta told the court that documentary evidence had surfaced which showed Mr Chidambaram’s links with money laundering. Mr Mehta told the court that there were glaring discrepancies between the statements of witnesses, co-conspirators and Mr Chidambaram and therefore he needs to be confronted with witnesses and other evidence.

Mr Chidambaram, arrested by the CBI on August 21, had been in judicial custody in Tihar jail until a fortnight ago, when he was handed over to the Enforcement Directorate.

The INX Media case includes accusations that Mr Chidambaram, as the Finance Minister of the nation, aided foreign funding for the organization INX Media – co-founded by Peter and Indrani Mukherjea in the year 2007 and his son Karti obtained kickbacks for it.

Mr. Chidambaram, Karti Chidambaram and 13 others including senior bureaucrats and private companies have been accused in a CBI charge sheet of causing losses to the government. The charge-sheet alleges the Chidambaram’s received Rs. 9.96 lakh as bribes.

Peter Mukerjea is also an accused but Indrani Mukerjea, who has turned approver against Mr Chidambaram, does not face charges. Both Peter and Indrani Mukerjea are currently in jail in connection with the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora.

Sena Plays Hardball with BJP in Maharashtra, Shah Likely to Meet Uddhav Thackeray on Oct 30

0

BJP president Amit Shah might meet Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray on October 30 after visiting a gathering of the BJP’s recently elected MLAs to select the leader of the House in Mumbai.

Shah’s conference with Thackeray, if it occurs, allows large political consequence given the Sena’s desire for equal partition of power in the next government in imitation of the senior ally’s weakened tally.

According to sources, Sena’s equal distribution of power causes chief ministership for Thackeray’s son Aaditya Thackeray, a first-time MLA.

“A conference of the BJP legislative party will take place in Mumbai on October 30. Our national president Amit Shah and leader Saroj Pandey will also be present at the meeting,” BJP MLC Girish Vyas said. “After the meeting, Shah may visit Uddhav Thackeray.”

Thackeray had made it obvious that his party would not know the obstacles of the BJP every time.

When results of the elections were being declared on October 24, Thackeray had prompted the BJP of the 50:50 formula accepted upon” between himself, Shah and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

“I cannot support the BJP every time. I want to mention the BJP about the method which was worked out in the presence of Amit Shah,” Thackeray had said.

On Saturday, the Sena asked a composed promise from the BJP that it will achieve the formula for equal sharing of power. Thackeray had told MLAs of his party that though “other options” were open for him, he didn’t want to examine them given that the support of the BJP and the Sena is connected by the “Hindutva beliefs.”

Shiv Sena has achieved 56 seats, where seven less than in 2014, in the 288-member House. The Sena has more support now as the BJP, whose poll got down from 122 in 2014 to 105, requires it more to traverse the midway mark of 144.

Nothing Wrong In Shiv Sena’s “50:50” Demand: Sharad Pawar

0

Reacting on the Shiv Sena‘s indication that it wanted a turn at the Maharashtra Chief Minister’s post, Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said there is nothing wrong with the demand as Uddhav Thackeray’s party has the experience of running the state government.

Mr Pawar is being credited for stopping the BJP-Shiv Sena juggernaut from achieving its goal of 220 seats in Maharashtra. The BJP’s tally has come down from 122 in the 2014 polls to 105 seats, prompting Mr Thackeray to remind party Chief Amit Shah of his “50:50” promise.

“In the 1990s also, there was a 50-50 formula for Shiv Sena and the BJP. So they have experience (in running the government). So Sena can insist, nothing wrong in that,” Mr Pawar said in an interview with a news agency.

Shiv Sena’s Manohar Joshi was the Maharashtra Chief Minister from 1995-1999.

The Congress-NCP alliance has won 102 seats in Maharashtra despite Congress chief Sonia Gandhi not addressing a rally in the state. Mr Pawar, however, defended his ally.

“Congress’s local leaders worked with the NCP. There was perfect coordination. Yes, Mrs. Gandhi didn’t come because of her health but Rahul Gandhi came. I am a local here so I had to take the initiative,” he said.

Talking about the odds his party was facing going into the state elections, he said, “Yes, we were facing a lot of problems – means of resources, funding communication. The other side was pouring money like anything.”

On Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ controversial jibe over the exodus of leaders from the NCP, Mr Pawar said he is not fully mature. Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attacks were not good, he said.

“I don’t think the CM is fully mature and he understands… So I don’t mind when he commented against me. But comments made by the PM (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) and the Home Minister (Amit Shah) were not good,” he said.

“I was given Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest honor (in India). If there are so many problems in me, why give me the award?” he added.

Mr Pawar, who had offered support to the BJP in 2014 before its tiff with Sena was resolved, said there was no question of going with the Shiv Sena.

Mr Thackeray on Thursday demanded the BJP honor the 50:50 agreement made during his meeting with Mr Shah earlier this year.”Sena contested fewer seats on BJP’s request; we can’t be so accommodating always,” he had said.

GC Murmu Is J&K’s First Lieutenant Governor, Satya Pal Malik Moved To Goa

0

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik, who presided over India’s northernmost state as it witnessed some of its most historical changes in recent memory, has been transferred. Girish Chandra Murmu, the Union Expenditure Secretary, will take over as the first Lieutenant-Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. Former Defence Secretary Radha Krishna Mathur will be the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, the Rashtrapati Bhavan announced on Friday.

The changes come more than two months after the government scrapped Jammu and Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 and split the state into two union territories.

Satya Pal Malik, who was appointed Jammu and Kashmir Governor in August 2018, has been shifted as Governor of Goa.

Mr Malik was the first career politician to be appointed to the position in 51 years. Mr Murmu’s appointment marks the return of former bureaucrats tasked with running the show in the Jammu and Kashmir. The senior IAS officer had worked closely with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat.

While Mr Murmu, a 1985-batch Gujarat cadre officer, is serving as the Expenditure Secretary in the Union Finance Ministry, Radha Krishna Mathur, a 1977-batch officer, has served as the defense secretary and is a former Chief Information Commissioner (CIC).

Mr Girish Chandra Murmu was set to retire from service in November this year, Mr Mathur retired from the CIC in November last year. They will be sworn in on Thursday.

Left without an elected government after the BJP pulled support from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in June 2018, Satya Pal Malik had been in-charge of the Jammu and Kashmir administration since he took over as governor two months later.

His tenure had been rocked by controversies including the infamous “fax machine row” where the governor dissolved the state assembly – after keeping it in suspended animation for months – just after two alliances staked claim to power later saying he did not receive the requests as the fax machine wasn’t working.

No one can save RTC says KCR

0

HIGHLIGHTS

It’s a closed chapter. Nothing is in my hands, says KCR

Hyderabad: Terming the ongoing RTC workers’ strike a big “nonsense, illogical and an illegal”, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao said. “I am sorry, no one can save the TSRTC. It’s a closed chapter. Nothing is in my hands.” The CM ruled out the merger of RTC with the government during his lifetime. In next five days, the government will permit the private operators to run the buses as per the Central Motor Vehicle Act, he said.

The Chief Minister in his two-hour long press conference held here on Thursday to thank voters for party’s victory in Huzurnagar dwelled at length on the RTC strike and went hammer and tongs against the union leaders. He said anyone who has “some brains”, would have thought twice before going on strike. Reacting to the claim of unions that KCR had hugged them during agitation for separate state but was now painting them as villains, he said, “Yes they participated in the agitation, so what? If someone in the house steals something, don’t we take action against them.”

When asked that the employees were unhappy that the government did not call them for talks, KCR shot back saying, “Who is that idiot who says that the government did not invite them for talks.” He said a three-member official committee was constituted to address the demands. The RTC union leaders were non-cooperative and stuck to the demand to merge the corporation with the government which is not practical for implementation.

The government had done all that was possible to save RTC. It had hiked the salaries of employees by 67 per cent in four years. “The major problem with the employees is that they are not ready to work hard and save the corporation from the crisis,” he said. The Chief Minister said that if the workers can get rid of the unions and put in hard work for two years, they can take home a bonus of Rs 1 lakh. He said the menace of unions has been growing and every time there is an election, they go on strike. He said the state government has already given Rs 4,550 crore to RTC in four years. Lashing out at the opposition parties, KCR said neither the BJP nor the Congress party had ever merged any RTC with the government in any of the states ruled by them. He said, he being fully aware of conditions of RTC, pumped crores of rupees into the corporation but it was losing Rs 13 per vehicle per day whereas the private travels were earning a profit of Rs 285 per vehicle per day. He also expressed his helplessness with regard to release of salaries since the matter was sub judice. KCR suggested the ‘self dismissed’ striking RTC workers to submit applications in the local depots if they want to rejoin their duties. He also clarified that there is no question of calling unions for talks. The workers should decide about their future. The government has nothing to do with their self-created problems, said KCR.
