Days after the death of Mounika at Hyderabad’s Ameerpet Metro Station, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on Tuesday initiated a probe into the incident. The 24-year-old had died earlier this week, after a chunk of mortar from the station got dislodged and fell on her.

JK Garg from the CMRS, who reports to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, conducted a preliminary inspection at the accident site along with Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) Managing Director N V S Reddy and other senior officials.

Officials also said that a public hearing will be held by CMRS at the Metro Rail Bhavan in Hyderabad on October 3.

Mounika was taking shelter from the rain at the pedestrian zone under the metro station when the tragedy occurred. Her death has left her family in shock.

Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) K T Rama Rao has already instructed Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and check all structures.

He tweeted that the reputation gained by Hyderabad Metro is high quality and safety standards shall be maintained and safety shall be a high priority.

Larsen and Toubro (L&T), the company which constructed the Hyderabad Metro projects, has also agreed to pay Rs 20 lakh as compensation to the victim’s family. The company also said it would provide another Rs 15 lakh from an insurance company and job to a family member.
