Sam Curran is a complete cricketer for us: Dhoni

0

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni was all praise for all rounder Sam Curran after their 20-run win over SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Tuesday at the Dubai International Stadium. Curran was sent out to open the innings with Faf du Plessis and scored 31 off 21 balls.

He later returned with figures of 1/18 in three overs, accounting for the wicket of SRH captain David Warner and thus providing CSK with their first wicket.

“He is a complete cricketer for us. You need a seaming all-rounder. He strikes the ball nicely, he can bat up the order, plays the spinners well,” said Dhoni in the post-match presentation ceremony.

“He can give us those quick 15-40 runs. You can push him up if you need that momentum and he is eager to do it. A good left armer is always good to have in the side. Especially with the new ball, which the batsman is always worried about.”

Curran has been a regular for CSK in the death overs but on Tuesday, they opted to use Dwayne Bravo, Karn Sharma and Shardul Thakur. “As the tournament progresses we’ll get more comfortable with the death bowling, which is why we kept Sam away from the death and Thakur and Bravo took over. We’ll get better,” he said.

Chennai beat SRH, keep playoff hopes alive

0

Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) desperation for a win, after two successive defeats, finally ended on Tuesday as the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led team registered a 20-run win over SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH).

The win helped CSK to keep their playoff hopes alive as the team now sits at the sixth spot on the points table while SRH remain at the fifth position in the eight team table. Both CSK and SRH have six matches each left to play in the league phase.

After putting a respectable 167/6 wickets in 20 overs, some disciplined and economical bowling helped CSK restrict their opponents at 147/8 wickets in 20 overs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Chasing the target, SRH suffered a top-order collapse as their opener-cum-skipper David Warner (9), Manish Pandey (4) and Jonny Bairstow (23) were back in the hut with just 59 runs on board.

Kane Williamson (57) took control of the proceedings however, the Kiwi skipper lacked support as wickets kept on tumbling from the other end.

Priyam Garg and Vijay Shankar chipped in with 16 and 12 runs before falling, despite Williamson keeping the fight on single-handedly.

Karn Sharma came with a much needed breakthrough in the 18th over, applying brakes on Williamson’s innings, which lasted 39 deliveries and contained seven boundaries.

Rashid Khan and Shahbaz Nadeem contributed with 14 and 5 runs respectively. However, it wasn’t enough to help SRH cross the line.

For CSK, Dwayne Bravo and Karn Sharma scalped two wickets each while Ravindra Jadeja, Sam Curran and Shardul Thakur settled with one each.

Earlier, some valuable contributions by Ambati Rayudu (41) and Shane Watson (42), followed by a quick and unbeaten 25 from Ravindra Jadeja guided CSK to 167/6 wickets in the allotted 20 overs.

Opting to bat after winning the toss, CSK received the first jolt when opener Faf du Plessis departed without troubling the scorers with the scorecard reading 10/1.

Sam Curran (31), who was promoted to open the innings with du Plessis, became Sandeep’s second victim after which Watson and Rayudu anchored the CSK innings. The duo was involved in a crucial 81-run stand for the third wicket.

After they departed, Dhoni (21) and Jadeja took CSK beyond the 150-run mark as the three-time champions ended their quota at 167/6 wickets.

For SRH, Sandeep (2/19), Khaleel Ahmed (2/45) and T Natarajan (2/41) picked couple of wickets each.

Brief scores: CSK: 167/6 wkts in 20 overs (Shane Watson 42, Ambati Rayudu 41; Sandeep Sharma 2/19) beat SRH 147/8 wkts (Kane Willaimson 57, Jonny Bairstow 23; Dwayne Bravo 2/25) by 20 runs

Calcutta HC orders 20% tuition fee reduction in pvt schools

0

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered a 20 percent reduction in tuition fees in all non-government aided schools in West Bengal during the coronavirus pandemic.

The order by a division bench came on a Public Interest Litigation filed by a guardians’ forum of 145 educational institutions. The High Court directed private schools not to charge fees under the non-academic head.

According to reports, the court also formed a three-member committee to look into all fee-related grievances.

Hookah bars banned in Chandigarh

0

The Chandigarh administration on Tuesday imposed a ban on hookah bars, saying they lead to transmission of coronavirus.

An order issued by District Magistrate Mandip Singh Brar said that it has been made to appear that hookah bars are operational in Chandigarh in a clandestine way and they are serving flavored hookahs, including tobacco molasses containing nicotine, which is highly injurious to health.

Any person violating the order shall be punished under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code.

BJP douses Tripura dissidence, but state leadership may take action

0

At least 7 BJP MLAs led by Sudip Roy Barman, who was dropped as a minister earlier by Biplab Deb, who has been camping in the national capital to reportedly “apprise the national leadership” of the alleged “high handedness” of Tripura CM Biplab Deb, seem to have been dissuaded for now by the top BJP leadership. Moreover, when IANS contacted Barman, he rubbished the dissidence allegations as “concocted stories”.

Barman, who has been widely quoted in the media about his disgruntlement with Deb rubbished it saying, “I am going back home tomorrow. These are all stories weaved by certain journalist friends in Tripura which the national media catches. I have nothing against Deb. The Chief Minister is doing a good job. I simply came here to wish Nadda ji after the new BJP team was formed and to discuss organizational work of Tripura.”

Sources say the turnaround took place after the intervention of the BJP’s top leadership which wanted the public spat between the two to end.

However, trouble seems to be brewing back home with the state BJP contemplating action against them, but only after the verification of facts.

Sources close to Biplab Deb suggest he did raise the matter in Delhi and that this renewed effort to question the Tripura CM takes place after the new BJP central team was constituted where Ram Madhav, a key BJP figure who looked after North East affairs and backed Deb, was dropped as General Secretary.

The disgruntled MLAs were seeking to meet party President JP Nadda, General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santosh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, say sources. However, all of them claim allegiance to the BJP and say their opposition is to Deb’s ‘misrule’.

Sources close to Biplab Deb told IANS, “They are a total of 8 lawmakers. The 8th one has now backtracked. So all in all there are 7 of them led by Barman who was dropped by Deb as a minister last year.”

So what is the opposition to Deb? There’s not one. The primary opposition is Deb’s alleged “high handedness” apart from Deb’s comments in the past that have embarrassed the party or the alleged mishandling of the pandemic that the dissidents sought to raise with Nadda.

The state BJP President is not happy about the developments. Tripura BJP President Manik Saha told IANS, “We have a custom that whenever BJP lawmakers go out of state, they inform the state President. I have no idea that they are in Delhi. No one has spoken to me. I learned from newspapers about (what they are up to). If it is true, and that is a big if, action according to (party) rules can be initiated.”

However, no action is likely to be initiated before they are back in Tripura and the matter is personally verified by Saha, as he said nothing can be done “based on newspapers”.

In the 60-member Tripura assembly, the BJP has 36 MLAs and also enjoys the support of 8 IPFT MLAs. It has been a bumpy ride with the IPFT which has accused the BJP of ignoring the indigenous people of Tripura and Ram Madhav had to intervene in July this year to sort things out. On his July 11 visit to Tripura, Madhav allegedly promised a dialogue between the allies at the state level.

With an unhappy ally, the last thing the BJP would want is dissidence in the party. And for now, the BJP seems to have doused the fire.

Kerala movie halls unlikely to open soon as Covid cases peak

0

Even though the Centre has cleared the opening of movie halls with rigorous Covid-19 controls from Thursday, Kerala is unlikely to follow suit, as a meeting of various film-based organizations here on Tuesday felt it was not the right time.

A meeting, under the aegis of the Kerala State Film Development Corporation, discussed the issue, but with the daily number of Covid positive cases peaking, and crossing 10,000 on two occasions, the general consensus was that it may not be feasible to open them from Thursday.

Already with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressing fears that the months of October and November might see Covid cases peaking, various film-based organizations also held the same apprehensions and that even if cinemas open from Thursday, there will be hardly any people who will turn up.

Meanwhile, popular comedian and character artiste Suraj Venjaramoodu, who won the Kerala Government’s best actor award announced on Tuesday, wished that like all in the industry, he is eagerly waiting for the old normal to return, as that is the only way the film industry will be happy.

“All wish that normalcy returns at the earliest and the crowds return to the theatres. The wait for it has been too long and it has taken a heavy toll,” he said.

The number of active Covid cases is the state is all set to touch one lakh mark and on Saturday, Kerala, which boasted of fighting Covid the best in the country, saw the highest daily number of cases, at 11,755.

SC allowed transportation of iron ore till Jan 31, 2021: Goa CM

0

The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed the transportation of already extracted iron ore, for which royalty has already been paid, from mining leases to loading points, while disposing of a petition filed by a mining company.

The decision is expected to partially revive the state’s beleaguered mining industry, which has been impacted by two bans on the fresh excavation of iron ore due to irregularities in the last decade.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told reporters at the state secretariat on Tuesday that the SC in its order has permitted transportation of iron ore for which royalty has been paid to the state government till January 31, 2021.

“SC has permitted transportation of iron ore till January 31. It is related to around four million tonnes of (royalty-paid) ore. With this, the mining business will begin in Goa,” Sawant said.

All fresh extraction of iron ore had been halted in 2018, after the apex court had found irregularities in the renewal of 88 leases, out of which the iron ore mines were operated.

The court had initially given time till March 15, 2018, for the transportation of iron ore for which royalty (a state levy) had been paid by the mining companies.

In its petition, the private mining company had sought an extension of time to transport iron ore, citing logistical issues as well as the lockdown and Covid-19 restrictions.

There are currently two other mining-related petitions pending before the Supreme Court. One is a special leave petition filed by a mining company, which has sought extension of the mining lease period, thereby doing away with the need for renewal of its mining leases.

The other petition has been filed by the state government, which has urged the apex court to reassess its 2018 order, which had put the brakes on the state’s mining industry.

Mining was also banned by the apex court in 2012 following the unearthing of a Rs 35,000 crore scam by a judicial commission appointed by the central government. But mining resumed in 2015 with restrictions before it was banned again in 2018.

When the mining industry was at its peak, mining extraction, trade, and export accounted for 30 percent of the state’s gross domestic product.

Mamata unveils double-decker open-roof buses in Kolkata

0

In 2009, she had promised to transform Kolkata into London and she did mention that in the Trinamool Congress’ 2009 Lok Sabha election manifesto. At the time, she was in the opposition. Her party had stormed to power in West Bengal in 2011 and Mamata Banerjee became Chief Minister of the state.

After more than a decade of her promise, Banerjee on Tuesday introduced two open-roof double-decker buses in Kolkata, much like London’s iconic red double-decker buses that have become a national symbol of England.

As of now, these two open-roof buses will be used for Puja Parikrama but later they will be used to promote tourism in Kolkata.

“These types of buses we generally get to see in London. These two buses will tour across important places and heritage landmarks with revelers in Kolkata during the Durga Puja festival. Later the existing route will be revised depending on the suggestion given by the tourists,” the CM said while unveiling the buses.

She said bookings for these two bus tours would start from October 14.

“The service will start on October 23. The first bus will start at 10.30 am and finish the trip at 1.30 pm. The second one will start its trip at 11.30 am and finish at 2.30 pm,” Banerjee said.

The double-decker buses were first introduced in Kolkata in the 1920s. But slowly, the erstwhile Left Front government phased them out in the early 1990s. The last bus went off city roads in 2005.

According to West Bengal transport department officials, the new blue-colored buses will have modern features like automatic doors, CCTV cameras, panic buttons, and destination boards. Each one will have altogether 51 seats of which 16 would be on the upper deck.

Pence did not know about fly during VP debate

0

US Vice President Mike Pence said that he did not know that a fly had landed on his head during the first Vice Presidential debate against his Democratic rival Kamala Harris last week, adding that he only came to know about it later.

“They’re the ones that told me. I didn’t know he was there,” Politico news quoted Pence as saying to Fox News on Monday.

“They all told me, ‘Dad, you did OK’. But they did tell me about the fly. And it was a good laugh for all of us.”

During the October 7 debate that took place in Salt Lake City, Utah, the fly sat on Pence’s white hair for roughly two minutes.

Biden’s campaign began selling fly swatter merchandise within minutes of the vice-presidential candidates leaving the stage, while the social media is still abuzz with jokes and memes.

SC seeks Centre response on PIL on age-based access of social media, removal of illicit content

0

The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a response from the Centre on a PIL filed by law students seeking age-based control on access to social media.

The plea filed by law students Skand Bajpai and Abhyudaya Mishra suggested the development of profile verification to remove unlawful content from the social media platforms. A bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde and comprising Justices A.S. Bopanna and V. Ramasubramanian, after a brief hearing in the matter, agreed to examine the plea filed by the students from Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University in Pune. The top court said: “Permission to appear and argue in person is granted. Issue notice.”

The plea sought action against social media accounts, which are responsible for the online trade of unlawful content – online harassment videos and promoting obscene content. The plea also sought a framework for the removal of illicit content and keeping an effective watch that such content is not uploaded in the future.

The top court sought a response from the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information and Technology and Law and Justice beside others, on the petition. Citing the menace of revenge porn, the plea urged the top court to enact gender-neutral laws, and also criminalize impersonation. The petitioners cited that they had sent a complaint to the government on this in June this year, and the lack of satisfactory response prompted them to move the top court. The plea sought legal proceedings against those users of social media who are connected with the procurement and advertising of the illicit content.

The plea cited the menace of fake accounts which serve as a platform for anonymity and impersonation. The petitioners sought a direction for effective guidelines for verifying social media accounts and include online safety in the education system.

Referees keep moving forward as ‘new normal’ sets in for Indian football

0

The ‘new normal’ of football has set in with the I-League Qualifiers. Following the strict Covid-19 safety guidelines, those operating in and around the tournament have already conducted four successful matches, two each in Kolkata and Kalyani respectively.

While all the five teams – Garhwal FC, ARA FC, Bhawanipore FC, Mohammedan SC, and FC Bengaluru United – have made their own adjustments to adapt to the new rules and regulations for their own safety, there is yet another team that is quietly working away behind the scenes, making sure all the matches are run smoothly – the referees.

“This is a unique experience for us all. But we have to adjust because football action has finally come back to India. We are proud to be a part of the tournament that has brought football back, in fact, bring sports back in India. It is up to us to manage. All are ready to accept the Covid safety regulations and move forward together,” referee Santhosh Kumar, who has been officiating in the tournament, was quoted as saying in an AIFF media release.

There has been a significant change to how the referees need to approach a game of football with regards to the build-up to a particular game, in order to comply with the Covid-safety guidelines that have been put in place for the tournament.

While each team can make five substitutions in a game, there is a very specific pattern in which these substitutions can be made, explained referee Raktim Saha.

“There are only three opportunities to make five substitutions now. Yes, you have five substitutions in hand, but in order to not prolong the added time much longer, teams must make these substitutions in three windows,” he stated.

Saha believes that despite the setbacks during the Covid-19 pandemic, Indian football has now fought its way back.

“Indian football is growing. We were closed for 8 months but we still kept attending the courses and kept our fitness intact. Now that Indian football is back, and we are all moving forward together despite the pandemic, so it feels really good,” he maintained.

Crime is rising as UP govt protecting perpetrators: Priyanka

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other opposition parties in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday criticized Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the rising crime graph in the state.

Priyanka said, “The UP government’s politically motivated narrative of justifying and protecting perpetrators of crimes against women has only emboldened criminals across the state.”

While attacking the government over the Gonda acid attack case, she attached the statement of the victims’ father to her Tweet and said, “This man’s three daughters aged 17, 10, and 8 were asleep in their home when someone entered and threw acid on them.”

Congress state president Ajay Kumar Lallu alleged that “in Yogiraj, Dalits are subjected to oppression as the government is trying to save criminals to save itself, then why will the criminals fear the state government.”

The party said that law and order has collapsed in the state after the three minor Dalit sisters received burn injuries when an unidentified attacker threw acid on them in Paska village in Gonda district in the wee hours of Tuesday. Two of the girls received minor injuries while the third was burnt in the face.

The Samajwadi Party, the principal opposition party in the state, is also up in arms after a woman tried to commit self-immolation in Lucknow.

The 35-year-old woman attempted self-immolation in front of the Vidhan Sabha on Tuesday afternoon, police said. A resident of Maharajganj district, the woman has been admitted to the civil hospital in a critical condition.

The Samajwadi Party said, “Injustice and torture have crossed the limits in the state.”

Recently, the state has witnessed a spate of crimes.

Close on the heels of the Hathras horror, a girl was gang-raped in a polytechnic college in Jhansi. In Gonda, a temple priest was shot over an alleged property dispute on Saturday. The victim, Samrat Das, is a ‘pujari’ at the Ram Janki temple.

IPL: Morris adds potency to RCB’s bowling arsenal

0

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had been struggling to find a frontline pace bowler to support their spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Washington Sundar in the early part of the IPL 2020. The team had also been struggling to stem the flow of runs at the death.

In their first five games, they had conceded 200 runs or thereabouts on three occasions. After the match against Delhi Capitals on October 5 in Sharjah, skipper Virat Kohli had said that they’d need the services of South African pace-bowling all-rounder Chris Morris and things will change when he’d join for the next match after recovering from injury.

Enter Morris and RCB’s fortunes change.

Thanks to his bowling, they have been able to restrict their next opponents — Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders — to register convincing wins and enter the top three in the points table. They are separated from second-placed Delhi Capitals only by net run rate.

Morris took 3/19 in four overs against CSK while he returned with figures of 2/17 against KKR on Monday night. His confidence has rubbed on to young pacer Navdeep Saini who has also done well to contain the batsmen.

Morris’s wickets against CSK included those of Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo whereas against KKR, his victims included the tail. In both the games, he was able to bring down the scoring rate by not allowing the batters to score freely.

The right-arm pacer has been used intelligently by his skipper in both the games – Kohli has split his overs into three phases. Morris bowled the first over in both the games. Then he was brought in for an over of two in the middle and then an over or two towards the end.

Against KKR, he bowled the 1st, 13th, 15th, and the 19th whereas, against CSK, he had bowled 1st, 10th, 17th, and 19th overs.

“I was very nervous, it has been a while since I last played a game, so I was very nervous, I had butterflies in my stomach, it was like I was making my Test debut again. Happy to get on the park, it is a good feeling,” said Morris in a press conference after the games against CSK.

Reddy pointed out that the cyber Lab will provide virtual experience in the investigation of cybercrimes.
