Competitive tennis will make a return after an eight-month Covid-19 hiatus as the All India Tennis Association (AITA) on Monday announced the resumption of the domestic circuit from November 16.

The tournaments will initially begin in the age categories of U-12, U-14, and U-16 only. The duration of the tournaments would remain restricted to three days, with a maximum draw of 32 allowed.

“During the AITA’s Management Committee meeting, a decision was taken to communicate to the secretaries of all the affiliates of AITA to make all efforts to restart tennis tournaments by 16th November 2020 by keeping in mind all the safety precautions that may be required as per the existing government guidelines,” said AITA in a media release.

The federation further stated that independent entities would not be allowed to conduct private tournaments outside the official AITA circuit without the prior permission of AITA or its affiliates and that the players would be cautioned against participating in any tournament that is not formally sanctioned by AITA and its affiliated units. “Such participation may attract disciplinary action,” said AITA.

An indicative set of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will be announced in this regard by the tennis body.

“Keeping in view the pandemic situation, the participation in the tournaments will be restricted to within the states and the decision on inter-district movement will be taken by the respective state associations’ presidents/secretaries, so as to conform to the state government specific guidelines on movement by individuals,” AITA further said.

This is the golden period for women’s hockey in India: Navneet

Indian hockey team striker Navneet Kaur believes the ongoing phase is the right period for aspiring women’s players to take up the sport.

“I believe this is the golden period for women’s hockey in India. We are given equal importance, job security, financial benefits through cash awards when we win, all these are great encouraging factors to take up the sport professionally,” Navneet, who made her international debut in 2014, said.

“I feel the following for our team has also grown tremendously since our improved performances at the 2018 Women’s World Cup, Asia Cup, Asian Games and Asian Champions Trophy.

“It is very motivating to see fans leaving us messages on social media and expressing their support to us,” added the striker who has so far made 79 appearances for the national team.

Speaking about the on-going national coaching camp, Navneet said, “Our intensity has increased this week onwards and we are able to take more load without facing any fatigue.”

“We are happy that we are hitting the same fitness levels prior to the lockdown. The best part is that since we continued our fitness regime through indoor workouts during the series of lockdowns, none of us has put on weight. These factors have helped us a lot,” she explained.

The player from Shahbad Markanda, Haryana also expressed that senior players always emphasise that youngsters must respect the facilities they have today and this should encourage them to do better in the sport.

“Players like Rani and Savita who have been with the team for over a decade always tell us how things have improved for women’s hockey over the years and how fortunate we are to be part of the team now,” she said.

“They motivate us to ride on this support to perform better in top events. We know that not only our lives will change if we win a medal at the Olympics but it will grow the sport by many folds in India,” added Navneet.

Arjun Bijlani: ‘Miley Jab Hum Tum’ should have season 2, as web series

Actor Arjun Bijlani is rooting for the second season of the popular 2008 tele-teen drama, Miley Jab Hum Tum, and he would prefer the sequel to be a web series in format.

Arjun played introvert college student Mayank in the TV show, which ran from 2008 to 2010.

“It would be amazing to see what the four lead characters are doing now, after 15 years. They met in college, fell in love but where has life taken them after that?” the actor wondered.

He recently sent out birthday greetings to his “Miley Jab Hum Tum” co-star Rati Pandey, who played his on-screen love interest Nupur in the show, which also featured Mohit Sehgal and Sanaya Irani.

Arjun feels that with the digital boom, “Miley Jab Hum Tum 2” could be a web series.

“It should be short and crisp. People should be able to re-live their favorite characters but not in a long format show. It can be a web series of a few episodes,” he said.

Karnataka appellate authority rules 18% GST on whole wheat ‘parota’ is void

0

The Karnataka Appellate Authority of Advance Ruling (AAAR) has given a ruling that the 18 percent Good and Services Tax (GST) applicable to whole wheat parantha or parota (fried flatbread) and Malabar Parota is void ab initio.

The authority was approached by ID Fresh Food (India) Pvt. Ltd, a food products company involved in the preparation and supply of a wide range of ready to cook, fresh foods including idli and dosa batter, parottas, chapattis.

The Karnataka appellate authority consisting of Judicial Member, D.P. Nagendra Kumar and Accountant Member, M.S. Srikar said that the ruling was given by AAR wherein 18 percent GST applicable on whole wheat parota and Malabar parota is void ab initio on the grounds that it was vitiated by the process of suppression of material facts.

The AAAR, however, did not give a ruling on the issue whether the preparation of whole wheat parota and Malabar parota be classified under Chapter heading 1905, attracting GST at the rate of 5 percent as the matter is pending in the proceedings.

The appellant contended that the parota is in ready to cook conditions. The parties have a shelf life ranging from 3-7 days.

The contention was that these products are not frozen products but only needs to be refrigerated to retain its freshness for a shelf life of 7 days.

The company approached the AAR seeking a ruling on the issue of whether the preparation of whole wheat parota and Malabar parota be classified under Chapter heading 1905, attracting GST at the rate of 5 percent.

The AAR had in its order ruled that the product parota is classified under Chapter Heading 2106 and is not covered entry No. 994 of Schedule I, so 18 percent of Goods and Service Tax is applicable.

The Authority for Advance Ruling (AAR, Karnataka) had pronounced a ruling that parantha (frozen/packaged) is different from plain roti and as such shall attract a higher rate of GST, i.e., 18 percent instead of 5 percent applicable to roti.

NBA Finals: Butler’s record-breaking performance keeps Heat alive

0

After Game 2 of the ongoing NBA Finals, Jimmy Butler had said “It’s not over”. He made sure he lived up to his statement in Game 3 as Miami Heat beat LA Lakers 115-104 in Game 3. Butler recorded a 40-point triple-double (40p, 11r, 13a) to keep Heat alive in the series at 2-1.

With Goran Dragic and Bam Adebayo unavailable for Game 3, Butler lived up to his superstar billing to become the third player in league history to record such a stat line in the Finals and the first to do so in a win. Butler became only the third player after Jerry West and LeBron James to record a 40-point triple-double in NBA Finals history. He is also the first player since Shaquille O’Neal in 2002 to score 40 points without attempting a 3-pointer, as per an NBA release.

“We won. I could care less about a triple-double. We play this game to win. We are here to win, we are here to compete. But we’re not going to lay down, we’re going to fight back in this thing, even it up 2-2,” said Butler after the win.

The heat got off to a great start taking a double-digit lead in the first quarter, but the Lakers fought back and stayed within touching distance of Heat’s score. As Anthony Davis struggled with fouls and turnovers, Butler scored 11 points in the second quarter to maintain Heat’s lead.

“It (foul trouble) had an impact. Picked up two early, come in, and get the third. So, it takes away the aggressiveness on both ends of the floor that I’m used to playing with, and those guys like to take charges or whatever, and you know, try to draw offensive fouls,” said Davis.

The Lakers took the lead at 91-89 after an 8-0 scoring run in the final quarter, however, Heat remained relentless and recorded an 8-0 scoring run of their own to seal the deal. “Obviously, this was a very desperate urgent game and he (Butler) was doing it on both ends of the court, just put his imprint on every important part of the game,” said Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra.

Athlete with hijab disqualified from volleyball match in US

0

A high school volleyball player in the US’ Tennessee was disqualified for wearing a hijab during the match.

According to a CNN report, Najah Aqeel, a freshman at Valor Collegiate Prep in Nashville, was warming up for a match on September 15 when her coach said a referee refused to let her play due to her hijab.

Citing a casebook rule, the referee said that Najah required authorization from the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association to wear the headscarf.

Najah, who had a choice to either remove her hijab or sit out of the match, eventually decided not to play.

“I was angry, sad, and also shocked just because I had never heard of the rule before that,” Najah told CNN. “The rule has no business being in the casebook. It singles out hijabis. I don’t see why I need the approval to wear my hijab when it is a part of my religion.”

However, according to Karissa Niehoff, executive director for The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFSH) which sets competition rules for most US high school sports, uniform guidelines are not hard rules and states can make exceptions.

“We are heartbroken and deeply sorry that the young lady was disqualified from the match for wearing the hijab,” Niehoff told CNN.

0

US-based search engine giant Google has dropped support for the Daydream VR platform with Android 11.

The Daydream headset and controller can still be used as a generic VR viewer, just like Cardboard.

However, the Daydream VR app is “no longer supported by Google and may not work properly on some devices running Android 11 or later.”

“Many of the third-party apps and experiences within Daydream may still be available as standalone apps in the Google Play store.

“We don’t expect users to lose account information or functionality for third-party apps as a result of Daydream no longer being supported by Google,” the company said in a statement.

Daydream was one of two significant phone-based VR platforms, alongside the now-defunct Samsung Gear VR.

Earlier this year, Daydream stopped being available on Samsung devices with Android 10, even the Pixel 4 does not have Daydream support. Pixel 3 was the last Google phone to feature the app and required backend services.

French Open: Nadal, Thiem advance to quarters; Halep exits

On Sunday, 12-time champion Nadal produced another ruthless and dominant display as he dropped four games to complete a 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 win over American qualifier, Sebastian Korda, on Court Philippe-Chatrier.

“With these conditions out there, with that wind, it’s unpredictable what the ball can do,” the reigning champion said after the match.

“So we need to be ready and just you need to be quick enough mentally and physically to have the right answer when the ball is moving every single way, no? So just to be focused and to understand that a day like today you’re going to have mistakes,” he added.

The Spaniard has recorded 97 victories in the clay major since his title-winning debut in 2005 and has only lost two matches in the past 15 years at the Roland Garros.

Recovery rate at 84% as India’s Covid cases breach 66L

0

With a spike of 74,442 coronavirus cases and 903 deaths in 24 hours, India’s tally on Monday mounted to 66,23,816 cases.

Though the cases are increasing, the recovery rate is 84.34 percent in India which is less than Chile that has over 92 percent cure rate, while the US that tops the Corona cases in the world has around 33 percent recovery rate.

The fatality rate has come down to 1.55 percent, the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said. Of the 20 worst affected nations, India has the lowest mortality rate, while Mexico has the highest of 10.4 percent and the UK next at 8.8 percent, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Out of the total cases, 9,34,427 are currently active, 55,86,703 have been discharged, while 1,02,685 lost the battle against the viral disease.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit with a total of 14,43,409 cases, including 38,084 deaths; followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.

Google defers 30% Play Store app fee in India till March 2022

0

Facing intense criticism over its Play Store billing policy, Google on Monday said it has extended the time for developers in India who use alternative payment system, to integrate with the Play Store billing system till March 31, 2022, thus deferring the enforcement of 30 per cent commission on in-app purchases of digital goods from its Play Store in the country.

The move, the tech giant said, is to ensure that the Indian developers have “enough time to implement the UPI for the subscription payment option that will be made available on Google Play”.

The company said it is setting up listening sessions with the leading Indian startups to understand their concerns more deeply.

“We will be setting up Policy Workshops to help clear any additional questions about our Play Store policies,” Purnima Kochikar, Director of Business Development, Games & Applications, Google Play, said in a blog post.

The Google decision to extend the time for developers in India to integrate with the Play billing system comes in the wake of criticism it has received from various stakeholders.

The developers and payment gateway players have criticized the new Google in-app purchase policies where those using Play Store to sell digital services will be required to use the tech giant’s own built-in payment system.

“Just because Google owns the gate and the gateway to the digital ecosystem of this country, they should not act arbitrarily and enforce their rules and regulations which are contrary to our country’s laws,” said Vishwas Patel, Founder, CCAvenues and Chairman, Payments Council of India.

“Also, they cannot force Indian apps, developers/owners, selling digital services to compulsorily use the Google Billing and payment system and charge 30 percent MDR,” he added.

According to Kochikar, the Google Play payments policy is not new.

“In fact, more than 97 percent of developers with apps on Google Play already comply with the policy. To be clear, the policy only applies if a developer charges users to download their app or they sell in-app digital items, which is less than 3 percent of developers with apps on Google Play,” she reiterated.

According to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), prima Facie, Google’s move, even if legal, is certainly not innocuous.

“For many founders of Indian start-ups, this brings back fears of the not so old deeply problematic revenue share model between VAS service providers (mainly digital goods) and telcos,” the IAMAI said last week.

Google said that its billing system provides a simple, safe way for consumers to transact.

“We are deeply committed to the success of the Indian ecosystem. We do not succeed unless our partners succeed,” Kochikar said.

These running caps are presented to the leading run-scorer and wicket-taker and keep changing hands throughout the duration of the tournament.

In the points table, Mumbai Indians are currently at the numero uno spot with six points from five games. They are followed by Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore who also have six points from four matches.

Paytm has created the digital infrastructure to enable small developers and businesses to set up low-cost, quick-to-build mini-apps that can be built using HTML and javascript technologies.

The company provides Paytm wallet, Paytm Payments Bank account, and UPI at zero charges and levies a 2 percent charge for other instruments like credit cards.

The company said that local India’s app store aims to drive the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ mission.

Paytm Mini App Store offers direct access to discover, browse, and play without downloading or installing separate apps.

It comes with a developer dashboard for analytics, payments collection along with various marketing tools to engage with the users.

This app store has been running in beta with select users and witnessed over 12 million visits in September.

“I am proud that we are today launching something that creates an opportunity for every Indian app developer,” Sharma said.

Google recently pulled the Paytm app from the Play Store for not complying with its gambling policies.

Paytm alleged that it was “arm-twisted” by the search engine major to comply with what it called “biased Play Store policies that are meant to artificially create Google’s market dominance”.

The Paytm app was restored on the Play Store after a gap of a few hours.

Daring Google, the financial services platform this week brought back the Paytm Cricket League with UPI cashback and scratch cards.

Paytm said that the cashback was being given following all rules and regulations set by the government.

After a face-off with Paytm, Google also sent notices to Zomato and Swiggy for running cashback-based IPL games and both the food aggregator platforms decided to pause their virtual gaming leagues.

While Zomato was running Zomato Premier League on its app, Swiggy offered ‘Match Day Mania’ during the ongoing IPL 13 matches.
