Microsoft blocked 13 billion malicious emails in 2019

0

Microsoft blocked over 13 billion malicious and suspicious mails in 2019, of which more than 1 billion were phishing credential attacks.

In 2020, the tech giant is busy tackling misinformation around Covid-19 as cybercriminals pivoted lures to imitate trusted sources like the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other national health organizations, to get users to click on malicious links and attachments.

COVID-themed attacks are targeting prominent governmental healthcare, academic, and commercial organizations to perform reconnaissance on their networks or people, according to Microsoft’s annual Digital Defense Report.

“In the past year, 90 percent of nation-state notifications have been sent to organizations that do not operate critical infrastructure — including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), advocacy groups, human rights organizations, and think tanks,” it said.

China, the US, and Russia were hit the hardest but every country in the world saw at least one COVID-19-themed attack.

The report found that threat actors have rapidly increased in sophistication over the past year, using techniques that make them harder to spot, threatening even the savviest targets.

The data were gathered from over 1.2 billion PCs, servers, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices that accessed Microsoft services, as well as 630 billion authentication events, 470 billion emails, analyzed for threats, and more than 18 million URLs scanned.

“Cybercriminals are opportunistic and have capitalized on interest and fear related to the Covid-19 pandemic and other disruptive events.

“They have also focused on targeting their ransomware activities toward entities that cannot afford to be offline or without access to records during critical periods of the pandemic, like hospitals and medical research institutions,” said Mary Jo Schrade, Assistant General Counsel, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit, Asia.

Since 2010, Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit has collaborated with law enforcement and other partners on 22 malware disruptions, resulting in over 500 million devices rescued from cybercriminals.

With ransomware, cybercriminals leverage occasions such as holidays, that will impact an organization’s ability to make changes (such as patching) to harden their networks.

“They are aware of business needs that will make organizations more willing to pay ransoms than incur downtimes, such as during billing cycles in the health, finance, and legal industries – and have exploited the Covid-19 crisis to demand ransom”.

Cybercriminals are also targeting employees with sophisticated phishing campaigns designed to capture their login credentials.

“During the first half of 2020, there was an increase in identity-based attacks using brute force on enterprise accounts,” Microsoft said.

Microsoft warned that IoT threats are constantly expanding and evolving, with the first half of 2020 has witnessed an approximate 35 percent increase in total attack volume compared to the second half of 2019.

To trick people into giving up their credentials, attackers often send emails imitating top brands.

“Organisations should adopt stronger cyber hygiene practices and tools to safeguard employees and infrastructure. These include adopting multi-factor authentication, using good email hygiene (including limiting or disabling auto-forwarding of emails), timely patching and updating of apps and software,” Schrade elaborated.

MI, SRH look to maintain winning ways

0

Sharjah, Oct 3 (IANS/GloFans) Reigning champions Mumbai Indians (MI) and a confident SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) will look to maintain their winning form when they clash in an IPL match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium here on Sunday.

Both teams have four points from four games, but the Rohit Sharma-led MI is atop the table, courtesy a better net run rate.

Both teams are coming after winning their previous games. While MI hammered Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), SRH came out victorious in the southern derby against three-times champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Friday night.

While MI doesn’t seem to have any worries either on their bowling or batting fronts, SRH received a major blow on Friday as their lead pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar sustained an injury against CSK and his availability remains in doubt.

MI’s captain-cum opener Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, and Keiron Pollard are in good nick with the willow, but South African Quinton de Kock has managed a mere 48 runs from four outings.

The MI bowlers have been slowly getting into the groove as they comfortably defended a 191/4 against KXIP on Thursday. They just need to keep the same rhythm against SRH as the contest will be played on a ground with much smaller boundaries than the two other venues.

SRH, on the other hand, have some top quality batters like skipper David Warner, Kane Williamson, and Jonny Bairstow in their top order. They faltered against CSK, but it was their young guns — Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma — who grabbed the opportunity with both the hands and captivated everyone with their sensible rescue act.

The ‘Orange Army’ also lacks a power hitter in their middle order which was quite visible against CSK. However, if the experienced top order gets going, it would give enough freedom to their youngsters to go for big hits.

And if pacer Bhuvneshwar misses the game, the onus will be on leg-spinner Rashid Khan, yorker specialist T Natarajan, and left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed to try and fill the gap. The team management could also be forced to include anyone from either Basil Thampi, Sandeep Sharma, or Siddharth Kaul to complete their bowling attack.

Both teams have 14 games so far in IPL history, and each one has won seven each. But looking at MI’s present firepower and the conditions here, the four-time champions seem to hold an edge over the 2016 winners.

Mamata leads protest in Kolkata, dubs BJP ‘shame’ for nation

A day after senior Trinamool Congress leaders were stopped from entering Hathras to meet a gang rape-murder victim’s family and were manhandled by police, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday condemned the crime and led a march here in protest while dubbing the BJP a “shame” for the country.

“During elections, they (BJP) go to a Dalit’s house, get food from outside, eat it, and claim they ate at a Dalit’s home. After elections, they will torture Dalits and thrash them. The incident is utterly shameful,” said Banerjee.

“I feel like going to Hathras and meeting the victim’s family. What has happened is highly condemnable,” the CM said while dubbing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a ‘shame’ for the whole nation.

Equating the crime in which a 19-year-old Dalit woman was allegedly gang-raped and grievously injured to the trial by fire of Lord Ram’s consort Sita, Banerjee said that the latter had to give ‘agnipariksha’ once, but in Uttar Pradesh not only was the woman gang-raped but also her body was burnt by police.

A team of four Trinamool Congress MPs, led by the party’s Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien and Lok Sabha member Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, were involved in a scuffle with police on Friday about a km from the victim’s village in Hathras.

After the incident, the Trinamool supremo held a meeting on Friday night with her nephew and Trinamool’s second-in-command Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s all-India President Subrata Bakshi, and Secretary General Partha Chatterjee.

They announced a 10-day protest program across Bengal and asked all district leaders to carry out the campaign from October 3 to October 12.

Meanwhile, the party has already started its campaign to target the BJP for the gruesome incident by posting different videos on social media platforms.

Saturday’s protest was Banerjee’s first such march since the Covid-19 pandemic broke out in March this year. It started from Birla Planetarium at 4 p.m. and reached Mayo Road in Kolkata.

The Left parties and the Congress also took out protest rallies on Saturday evening, condemning violence against women, caste-based discrimination, and the alleged ‘fascist behavior’ of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Four Kashmiri youths arrested by Delhi police, arms seized

0

The Delhi police special cell has arrested four Kashmiri youths and recovered over 120 rounds of ammunition and four sophisticated pistols from their possession.

Police said that one of the arrested persons Ishfaq Majeed Koka is the elder brother of slain terrorist Burhan Koka, ex-chief of the Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind, an offshoot of the Al Qaeda in J&K. The other three arrested include Altaf Ahmad Dar, Mushtaq Ahmad Gani, and Aqib Safi.

On October 2, specific source information was received by the Special Cell that a group of Kashmiri youths who were camping in Delhi for the past few days, had collected a huge cache of arms-ammunition and that they will be visiting the area in and around ITO and Daryaganj. According to Delhi police, they came to Delhi on September 27 and were camping in Paharganj.

“As per information, immediately a trap was laid near ITO. The team acted swiftly and apprehended all the accused persons from the Ring Road from the spot after a brief chase and scuffle,” said PS Kushwah, DCP Special Cell.

Sukhbir asks Rahul why he played ‘fixed match’ on farm Bills

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Badal on Saturday asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to tell Punjabis why he had played a “fixed match” to facilitate the passage of the three “anti-farmer” agricultural Bills in Parliament.

He also asked the Congress leader if he supported the clean chit given to Punjab’s Social Welfare Minister Sadhu Singh Dharamsot by Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in the Scheduled Castes scholarship scam.

Addressing the media here, Sukhbir said before indulging in photo ops in Punjab on Sunday, Rahul should tell Punjabis why he had betrayed their cause and initiated the process to make the Bills a reality.

“I want to ask Rahul five questions. Did your party’s 2017 election manifesto in Punjab say that you will open private ‘mandis’ and give permission for e-trading the contract farming which is in force now? If so, why haven’t you repealed the amended APMC Act in Punjab till now?”

“Did you in your 2019 election manifesto state that you will abolish the APMC Act altogether and make agriculture trade free from all restrictions? Why did you choose to leave the country one day before the Bills were to be taken up in Parliament and come back the day they became Acts?

“Also why didn’t you issue a whip to your MPs to vote against the Bills and field senior leaders to oppose them?”

About the clean chit given to minister Dharamsot despite being indicted in an inquiry conducted by an Additional Chief Secretary, Sukhbir said Rahul should tell the Dalit community in Punjab whether he was in agreement with this action.

“Rahul should also tell if he is in agreement with the Chief Minister’s decision to give an open license to Congress ministers to loot central funds sent for distribution to SC students.”

The SAD president also rejected the re-inquiry ordered by the Chief Minister in the case, saying an officer junior to the Additional Chief Secretary had been deputed to exonerate Dharamsot.

“Now the government is saying that only Rs 7 crore has been embezzled, yet no action has been taken in the matter. I only wish to state that if Sadhu Singh Dharamsot who looted Rs 69 crore has been found to be innocent then a case should be registered against Additional Chief Secretary Kripa Shankar Saroj who indicted him for embezzling the SC scholarship funds,” he added.

Twitter to remove tweets wishing for Trump’s death from Covid

0

Twitter has categorically said that it will proactively remove tweets by those who wish for US President Donald Trump’s death on the platform and will put their accounts into a “read-only” mode for violating its policies.

After Trump announced on Friday that he and his wife Melania Trump had tested positive for Covid-19, several people took to Twitter, openly calling for Trump’s death from the deadly respiratory disease.

Twitter told Motherboard on Saturday that users are not allowed to openly hope for Trump’s death on the platform and that tweets that do so “will have to be removed”.

On its ‘abusive behavior’ policy page, Twitter says: “We do not tolerate content that wishes, hopes or expresses a desire for death, serious bodily harm or fatal disease against an individual or group of people.

“This includes, but is not limited to, hoping that someone dies as a result of a serious disease.”

Trump has been admitted to the nation’s premier military hospital in Washington for several days, limiting his campaigning in the crucial month before the November 3 US presidential elections.

His doctor Sean Conley said on Friday night that he had recommended moving Trump to the Walter Reed Military Medical Centre after consulting specialists from there and the Johns Hopkins University.

The Walter Reed hospital, which has among the best equipment and experts, is usually the first stop for military personnel wounded in wars abroad.

Facebook, however, says that its policy distinguishes between public figures and private individuals because “we want to allow discussion, which often includes critical commentary of people who are featured in the news or who have a large public audience”.

“For public figures, we remove attacks that are severe as well as certain attacks where the public figure is directly tagged in the post or comment,” Facebook says.

The report said that what this means is that “it’s OK to post on Facebook” that you hope Trump dies, so long as you do not tag him in the post or “purposefully expose” him to “calls for death, serious disease, epidemic disease, or disability”.

975 new cases take J&K’s Covid tally past 78K-mark

0

Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday reported 975 new Covid-19 cases, taking the Union Territory’s coronavirus tally to 78,228, while 19 deaths in the past 24 hours took the UT’s COVID death toll to 1,231.

A statement issued by the Information and Public Relations Department said that of the 975 cases reported on Friday, 591 were from the Jammu division and 384 from the Kashmir division.

Of the total 78,228 Covid-19 cases in Jammu and Kashmir, 61,351 persons have recovered completely.

BP medicine may lower death risk from flu, pneumonia

0

Researchers have found that drugs to lower the blood pressure of the type ‘ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers reduce the mortality rate of influenza and pneumonia.

For the study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, the research team compared mortality rates among 5,00,000 Danish patients who were admitted to hospitals in Denmark with influenza and pneumonia during the period 2005 to 2018.

“A little over 1,00,000 of the admitted patients took ACE inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor blockers, and the study shows that fewer of them were put on a ventilator and that they had lower mortality rates,” said study author Christian Fynbo Christiansen from the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark.

The study arrives mid in a discussion of treatment which peaked while the corona pandemic was at its height.

Some medical doctors and researchers pointed out that ACE inhibitors may actually have the completely opposite effect – that is increasing the risk of dying from Covid-19 as the virus enters the lungs through the same ACE receptors as the ACE inhibitors.

The hypothesis was that when the ACE inhibitor reduces the level of ACE, the body compensates for this by activating a much greater number of ACE receptors on the surface of the cells, which the SARS-CoV-2 virus then utilizes as some kind of access key.

According to the researchers, the greater the number of access keys available on the surface of the cells, the more easily the virus gains access to the cells.

The theory about increased mortality has been nurtured by the fact that a strikingly large proportion of the patients who were seriously ill due to Covid-19 had elevated blood pressure, which is extensively treated with ACE inhibitors.

“We haven’t examined whether what applies to patients with influenza and pneumonia can be transferred directly to patients with Covid-19, but there is some evidence to suggest that ACE inhibitors have a protective effect against lung damage which we don’t see in patients who take other types of medicine to lower blood pressure,” the authors wrote.

The first studies find no correlation between ACE inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers and Covid-19. However, further studies are needed using the good Danish registers,” says Christian Fynbo Christiansen.

Sushant case: Kangana Ranaut discards suicide theory

Actress Kangana Ranaut on Saturday reacted to news reports suggesting that the forensic team of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi hinted that late actor Sushant Singh Rajput had committed suicide.

“Young and extraordinary individuals don’t just wake up one fine day and kill themselves. Sushant said he was being bullied and outcast, he feared for his life, he said movie mafia banned him and harassed him, he was mentally affected by being falsely accused of rape #AIIMS,” the actress tweeted on her verified account.

“With the latest progress, we need answers to a few questions.

1) SSR repeatedly spoke about big production houses banning him. Who are these people who conspired against him?

2) Why media spread false news about him being a rapist?

3) Why was Mahesh Bhatt doing his psychoanalysis?,” Kangana wrote in a separate tweet.

Kangana’s reaction comes on a day when AIIMS, in its report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), “hinted” that Sushant’s death on June 14 happened by suicide and not murder, as per our sources from the hospital.

The actress, on Saturday, also posted tweets alleging that Sushant had a fallout with Yash Raj Films, there was a conspiracy behind his films getting shelved, and that he was being blackmailed.

“He wrote in many his social media posts that he is being thrown out of film industry, spoke openly about his fall out with Yashraj films. His family went to cops because he feared people in his life, abetment of suicide is a murder, legally and morally it’s a bonafide murder,” Kangana wrote.

“He spoke openly about his fall out with Yashraj films, it’s a known fact that he was banned by many big production houses, many of his films were dumped which looked like an evident conspiracy. He begged people on social media and told them he is being thrown out of film industry,” she added.

“His family complained to cops about the threat to his life way before he died, he wanted to live but quit films, he wanted to settle in Coorg but who blackmailed him? Who cornered him in a way that dying was easier than living? Morally and legally abetment of suicide is a murder,” Kangana further tweeted.

Dharma Productions’ ex-executive accuses NCB of ‘coercion’

A Mumbai special court on Saturday extended the judicial custody till October 6 of former Dharma Productions executive Kshitij Ravi Prasad even as he accused the Narcotics Control Bureau of employing “pressure tactics” and “harassment”.

Prasad was arrested on September 26 by the NCB during its ongoing probe into the drugs angle to the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Kshitij was presented before Special NDPS Court Special Judge JB Gurav at the end of his earlier judicial custody.

The NCB said in its remand application that Kshitij was in touch with several suppliers and peddlers from whom he used to procure drugs and his judicial custody was needed to unravel whom all he was delivering the contraband in Bollywood.

In a separate statement filed through his lawyer Satish Maneshinde, Kshitij said he had retracted his earlier statement given to the NCB allegedly under duress.

He claimed that NCB sleuths told him they would let him off if he falsely implicated (filmmaker) Karan Johar, Somen Mishra, Rakhi, Apoorva, Niraj, or Rahil, but he (Prasad) refused.

“That subsequent to September 27, I have been repeatedly harassed and coerced into falsely implicating Dino Morea, Arjun Rampal, and Ranbir Kapoor in the present proceedings, despite me repeatedly stating that I do not know the said persons and have no knowledge of such allegations,” Kshitij said in a handwritten addition to the statement.

He contended that since he refused to oblige, the NCB officials allegedly prepared the statements as per their wishes and forced him to sign them, and even threatened to implicate his wife and family in the case.

“I say that in this manner I am being mentally, emotionally, and psychologically harassed and abused by the NCB into making false statements,” Kshitij claimed.

Kshitij is the 20th person to be arrested to date by the NCB in the high-profile case, including Bollywood actress Rhea Chakraborty — the only woman accused in the case so far — besides her brother Showik, and 18 others including peddlers, suppliers, aides of the late actor Sushant, etc.

The NCB has also recovered various types of drugs and cash from the accused as it attempts to unravel the nexus of the drug in Bollywood for the past nearly two months.

Lomror’s 47 help Rajasthan set 155-run target for RCB

0

Middle-order batsman Mahipal Lomror’s valuable 47 helped Rajasthan Royals set a 155-run target for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 15th IPL 2020 match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Saturday.

Electing to bat, Royals didn’t have a great start as they lost skipper Steve Smith (5), Jos Buttler (22), and Sanju Samson (4) inside the first five overs with just 31 runs on the board.

Lomror — who was playing his first match in this IPL season — then took control of the innings and along with Robin Uthappa, took the team’s score to 70. Uthappa looked to be finding his form before his 17-run knock came to an end in the 11th over.

Uthappa’s dismissal, however, didn’t affect Lomror as he held one end and stitched another 35-run partnership with Riyan Parag. Parag was dismissed after contributing with 16 while Lomror felt short of scoring a well-deserved fifty as he lost his wicket while going for a maximum and was caught at long-off after scoring 47.

Rahul Tewatia and Jofra Archer then added 40 runs in the last 20 balls to take the team’s score past 150 marks. While Tewatia remained not out on 24 (12 balls), Archer contributed with unbeaten 16 from 10 deliveries as Rajasthan managed 154/6 in their allotted 20 overs.

For Bangalore, Yuzvendra Chahal starred with the ball as he returned with figures of 3/24 from his four overs. Isuru Udana also picked up two wickets but he was expensive, giving away 41 runs in his full quota of overs. Navdeep Saini also chipped in with a wicket.

Brief scores: Rajasthan Royals 154/6 (Mahipal Lomror 47, Rahul Tewatia 24*; Yuzvendra Chahal 3/24)

Weighed 95 kg after injury in 2015, felt retirement talks were right: Shami

0

India’s pace spearhead Mohammad Shami has opened up about the knee injury he suffered in 2015 and the speculation thereafter that his career was coming to an abrupt end.

Earlier this year, Shami had revealed that he had played in the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with a fractured knee. He was the second-highest wicket-taker for India (17 wickets from 7 matches) behind Umesh Yadav (18 wickets) and the fourth-highest overall in the tournament.

“In 2015 and even back in 2018 when I faced an injury, the media said that my career would be over. The media reported that even if I come back, I won’t be the same Shami, and I agree that I am not the same that I was a few years back,” said the Indian pacer while speaking on Amstrad InsideSport Face 2 Face cricket series.

“And that’s the only correct thing that they have said. This comment motivated me a lot to do better in the game for which I am known,” he added.

The right-arm pacer, who is currently playing for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL), also emphasized the importance of mental strength.

“Everyone faces some problem or the other in their lives. To set a goal and to achieve it, you need to plan a chart and work accordingly. I believe that everyone has to face a difficult phase in life to refocus and work in the right direction,” he said.

“I remember after my injury, I weighed almost 95 kg and I felt that what people are saying is true and I can’t do anything about it. But then I had a ball next to me throughout the 60 days of my bed rest. You don’t have to forget things in life and you have to learn and adapt to the situation and you can’t lie to yourself, especially with regard to your profession,” Shami added.

Shami has been in great form for the Kings XI so far in IPL 2020, having picked up eight wickets in four games.

The 30-year-old further spoke about his time away from cricket due to Covid-19 and about his time practicing alone.

“When the lockdown started, I took 20-25 days off, but I pushed myself to utilize all the things I had which were needed for practice. Even though it gets a bit boring to practice alone, but luckily I had my friend and my brother for the practice. The training during the lockdown and a month of practice in the UAE helped me keep the momentum,” Shami said.

According to the Indian pace spearhead, a human body doesn’t function like a car wherein a tank could be filled with petrol and it will run smoothly thereafter.

“Obviously, it takes time for any person to get back on the routine. It gets difficult for even office workers, so imagine how difficult it must be for a sportsperson to step out from the leisure of their homes,” said Shami.

“The most difficult thing for a sportsperson is to maintain his weight and fitness levels which becomes very crucial. I am very happy that I have been able to utilize what I got from cricket to keep myself in good shape,” he added.

High Covid deaths among docs due to poor doctor-patient ratio, inadequate PPE

0

Lack of adequate PPE kits, the inadequate technique of PPE donning and doffing, non-disclosure by patients of their exposure to possible Covid-19 infection, excessive working hours, and poor doctor-patient ratio are the reasons for higher fatality among doctors, according to an analysis.

India currently has the most number of Covid-19 cases in the world after the US. The pandemic has also caused high mortality, not only in patients but also in the healthcare fraternity.

According to an analysis of the pandemic’s impact on the healthcare community, the other recognized risk factors among doctors are close contact in physical examination and therapy of infected patients, direct contact with body fluid, and excreta from the patients, suctioning of airways, endotracheal intubation, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

As per a research paper by Aanandita Kapoor and Krishan Mohan Kapoor, the maximum number of Covid-19 fatalities have been recorded among general practitioners. Among the specialists, most deaths are seen among pediatricians, followed by medical specialists, general surgeons, obstetricians, gynecologists, and anesthesiologists.

A total of 382 COVID-related deaths and 2,174 infections were reported among doctors in India till September 10, with a case fatality rate of 16.7 percent among Indian doctors, which was 10 times the rate of 1.7 percent in the general population.

The details of the data for the research were taken from the list of doctors in India who died due to Covid-19, which was compiled by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), the top body of Indian doctors practicing modern allopathic medicine.

“The maximum number of deceased doctors were general practitioners 225 (58.9 percent). Among the specialists, most deaths were seen in pediatricians 26 (6.8 percent), medical specialists 24 (6.3 percent), general surgeons 22 (5.8 percent), obstetricians, and gynecologists 16 (4.2 percent), and anesthesiologists 14 (3.7 percent),” the duo stated.

The highest Covid-19 related deaths in doctors were seen in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The average age of Covid-19 related death was 60 years among doctors. General practitioners and 60 years+ doctors are at a much higher risk of mortality among the doctors.

According to the researchers, all precautionary principles should be used for frontline health workers, and a properly fitted respirator or masks should be used.

They said that there should be a uniform policy regarding the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) where health workers’ occupational health and safety are given high priority.

“Telemedicine reduces the risk of the treating physicians and reinforces the health systems with healthcare workers quarantined at home after exposure to Covid-19,” the researchers said.

Google hiring special team to spot critical bugs in Android apps

0

As bugs in highly-sensitive apps on Google Play Store keep increasing, Google is now looking for security engineers to find critical vulnerabilities and focus largely on fake Covid-19 contact tracing and election-related apps.

The security engineers will manage a team that “performs reverse engineering, technical security assessments, code audits and design reviews of third-party Android applications and libraries,” Google said in the latest job posting.

There’s no such thing as a “safe system” — only safer systems and Google said that its security team works to create and maintain the safest operating environment for Google’s users and developers.

“As a Security Engineer, you help protect network boundaries, keep computer systems and network devices hardened against attacks and provide security services to protect highly sensitive data like passwords and customer information”.

“You also work with software engineers to proactively identify and fix security flaws and vulnerabilities,” Google said.

The new security team will be independent of the Google Play Security Reward Programme (GPSRP) which is Google’s bug bounty program for Android apps listed on the Play Store.

The tech giant last year announced to pay $1 million (nearly Rs 10 crore) as a top award to security researchers who can find a unique bug in its Pixel series of smartphones that may compromise users’ data.

There is an additional 50 percent bonus if a security researcher is able to find an exploit on “specific developer preview versions of Android”, resulting in a prize of $1.5 million (Rs 10.5 crore).

The new Android security team will identify fundamental security problems at Google and drive major security improvements in Google infrastructure.

“You’ll face a wide variety of code quality issues, and work towards detecting flaws both obvious and highly discrete”.

Ayushmann Khurrana on UP gangrapes: We have to raise better sons

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana is distraught reading about the recent horrific gang rape and killings at Hathras and Balrampur.

“Shocked, shattered, and devastated. After Hathras, another gangrape and murder at Balrampur! It’s barbaric, inhuman, and calls for the most severe punishment to the guilty. When will this stop? We are failing every single day to protect the women of our country. We have to do more than just protecting women. We have to raise better sons!” he said.

The actor, who has been roped in by UNICEF India as a celebrity advocate who will work at ending violence against children, has also trained focus on atrocities against children. He says brutality against minors is unacceptable but preventable.

“As a UNICEF celebrity advocate, my role is to further children’s rights, to support UNICEF in advocating for these rights using my voice and my influence. One of the major issues I am supporting is ending violence against children, to advocate that violence against children is unacceptable, and it is preventable,” Ayushmann said.

The actor says he will spotlight on how to put an end to the societal menace.

“Violence against children is pervasive, but how often do we hear about it being reported or discussed? I will be drawing attention to this issue, making violence against children visible. We need more and more people acknowledging that violence happens, taking steps to end violence as well as to report it,” he said.

Madras HC order puts AICF’s Raja under check

In a major setback for P.R.Venketrama Raja, President All India Chess Federation (AICF), and his faction, the Madras High Court has clarified the electoral college that existed in February this year is no more valid, said an advocate of the rival faction.

He also said the AICF is to be managed by its general body and there are no office bearers as on date as their three-year tenure had come to an end in June itself.

“The Madras High Court on September 28 had said there is no need for any clarification on its order dated 18.2.2020. The court said the issue of forming a new electoral college was not a matter that was raised in that case. So, there is no bar for AICF to have a new electoral college,” said Sanjay Chadha, advocate for AICF Secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan.

Chadha said his client has the support of 22 out of the 33 state chess federations affiliated to AICF.

The AICF is split into two factions – one headed by Raja and the other by Chauhan.

Raja had approached the court for clarification on the orders issued on 18.2.2020.

In a case filed by Raja, the court on February 18 had set aside the election of five office bearers of AICF and had asked the Returning Officer to convene a Special General Body Meeting to conduct fresh elections.

Appearing for Raja seeking clarification on the 18.2.2020 order, Senior Advocate P.S. Raman submitted that by misinterpreting that order, Chauhan and his supporters held a general body meeting via video conferencing on 22.4.2020 and to tamper with the Electoral College finalized by the erstwhile Returning Officer.

Raman stated at the said AICF meeting on 22.4.2020, resolutions were passed disaffiliating five state associations and also suspended the key office bearers of AICF without any power and authority so that they cannot contest in the election.

On his part, Chadha submitted that on the reading of paras 16 and 17 of the court’s earlier order (18.2.2020), it was clear that the entire proceedings of the Returning Officer subsequent to 05.02.2020 were set aside and, therefore, there is no prohibition for preparing the new Electoral College.

“In fact, a conjoint reading of paragraphs 16 and 17 of the order, dated 18.02.2020, would reveal that we have directed the Returning Officer to convene the Special General Body Meeting of AICF to conduct a fresh election, by sending notices to all the Members along with the date, time and place of the meeting and also to fix the date for filing nominations. This would only mean that the direction was only for convening the Special General Body Meeting and we had not issued any direction for finalizing the Electoral College,” the court said.

Chadha said an appeal has been filed against the single-judge order of the high court granting an ad-interim injunction against the special/extraordinary general body meeting held on April 22, said the federation.

The special/extraordinary general body meeting was called by supporters of Chauhan.

Setting up of a five-member committee to run AICF; a declaration that three officials including Raja are no more office-bearers; disaffiliation of some state chess associations are some of the decisions taken at the April 22, general body meeting.

On 28.8.2020, the Madras High Court held that the calling and conduct of the meeting and the resolutions adopted are totally contrary to the bye-laws and the Act and granted an ad-interim injunction.

“The three-year tenure of all the AICF office bearers got over in June 2020. The way out is the elections,” Chauhan said.

India successfully test-fired an advanced version of Shaurya missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead from a defense facility off the Odisha coast on Saturday.

The surface-to-surface missile can hit targets in around 800 km range, said defense sources.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile was test-fired from the Abdul Kalam Island test range at 12.10 pm.

Shaurya is about 10 meters long with a diameter of 0.74 meters.

Payal Ghosh calls #MeTooIndia movement ‘fake’

Actress Payal Ghosh on Saturday termed the MeToo movement in India as fake. The actress, who has leveled sexual harassment charges against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, has also questioned the authenticity of the movement that started two years ago in the country.

“All the accused got a clean chit in the #Metooindia movement. So it deems the accuser to be false. Why are they not punished for harassment then? Where is the truth? Up in the air. Why are those women not behind the bars for false accusations, as the accuser got a clean sheet?” Payal wrote on her verified Twitter account.

“The women posting in support of the accused know nothing about the situation and can have an opinion that the accused can’t do this ever. It’s like the rapist’s wife saying that the husband is innocent and can never do this. Tell me otherwise,” Payal wrote in separate tweets, tagging her opinion with #fake and #Metooindia.

Payal’s claim over the authenticity of the MeToo movement in India comes at a time when Anurag Kashyap has received the support of several industry colleagues, including actresses he has worked with, as well as his two ex-wives after she accused him of sexual harassment.

On Friday, Payal had claimed on Twitter that the filmmaker has lied before the police while giving his statement. The actress demanded a lie detector, polygraph test, and narco analysis be performed on him.

On Friday evening, Payal’s lawyer Nitin Satpute tweeted from his unverified account: “Today I have filed an application to the Police station on behalf of Payal Ghosh to conduct Narco Analysis, Lie Detector and Polygraph Test of Mr. Kashyap to find out the truth, for the interest of Justices.”
