0

Around 80 percent of Indian small business owners are optimistic that their business will survive the Covid-19 pandemic and 71 percent say that they are confident of the measures taken to gain consumer trust, according to the survey by American Express.

Further, the survey also showed that around 63 percent of consumers are optimistic about resuming their pre-COVID shopping habits in the next 3-6 months.

The survey examined the impact of the pandemic on the country’s small businesses, and their plans for business continuity by adopting new approaches aligned with the changing consumer preferences.

“Contactless payment and delivery methods, social media marketing and communication and in-store safety and hygiene stand out as focus areas for small businesses to build business resilience and trust with consumers,” an American Express statement said.

Manoj Adlakha, SVP, and CEO, American Express Banking Corp India said, “With the lockdown restrictions easing it is heartening to see small businesses and consumers being optimistic about returning to pre-COVID shopping levels while taking appropriate safety measures.”

The survey reveals that 70 percent of consumers are likely to prioritize shopping from local small businesses as they open.

The CEO, however, said: “While people are starting to head out again, small businesses are still facing the challenge of getting consumers to return at the levels they need. We have launched a ‘Shop Small’ campaign to encourage shoppers to support the nation’s resilient small businesses and accelerate their recovery.”

Anushka hits back at Gavaskar: Your message is distasteful

Actress Anushka Sharma on Friday hit back at legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar for his comment against her husband, cricketer Virat Kohli, during the Thursday IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), which Kohli captains, and Kings XI Punjab (KXIP).

Gavaskar was a commentator during the match that RCB lost by 97 runs. Opining on Kohli’s poor form during the match, the former Indian opener made a snide remark involving Anushka that many thoughts were in poor taste.

Anushka took to Instagram Stories and posted a long note expressing disapproval over Gavaskar’s comment.

She wrote: “That, Mr. Gavaskar, your message is distasteful is a fact but I would love for you to explain why you thought of making such a sweeping statement on a wife accusing her of her husband’s game? I’m sure over the years you have respected the private lives of every cricketer while commenting on the game. Don’t you think you should have an equal amount of respect for me and us?”

“I’m sure you can have many other words and sentences in your mind to use to comment on my husband’s performance from last night or your words only relevant if you use my name in the process?”

“It’s 2020 and things still don’t change for me. When will I stop getting dragged into cricket and stop being used to pass sweeping statements?”

“Respected Mr. Gavaskar, you are a legend whose name stands tall in this gentleman’s game. Just wanted to tell you what I felt when I heard you say this.”

Kohli dropped two catches and did not have a great outing during their 97 run defeat against Kings XI Punjab in Dubai on Thursday night.

Gavaskar in the commentary box made an unsavory comment involving the cricketer’s wife Anushka.

Many on social media have expressed outrage and criticized Gavaskar. Some even demanded that the legendary cricketer be removed from the commentary panel.

This is not the first time that the actress has been dragged into a cricket controversy related to Kohli.

Iconic singer SP Balasubrahmanyam dead due to cardio-respiratory arrest

Famed playback singer and Padma awardee S.P. Balasubrahmanyam, popular as SPB or Balu in the movie world, who recorded over 40,000 songs in 16 languages over a period of five decades, died on Friday afternoon, his son S.P.Charan said.

Speaking briefly to the media outside the MGM Healthcare Hospital, Charan said Balasubrahmanyam passed away at 1.04 p.m. and thanked the hospital officials for the treatment and service.

He said further details will be shared later.

In a statement issued on Friday, the hospital said: “In a further setback this morning, despite maximal life support measures and the best efforts of the clinical team, his condition deteriorated further and he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest. With profound grief, we regret to inform you that he has passed away on September 25 at 13.04 hours.”

The hospital said Balasubrahmanyam was on life support measures since Aug 14 for severe Covid-19 pneumonia.

On August 5, in a Facebook post, the 74-year old SPB said that he was suffering from a very mild attack of coronavirus and had got himself hospitalized to take rest.

He had said that though the doctors had advised him to stay at home and take rest, he decided to be in a hospital, as at home his family members would get concerned.

He hoped to get discharged from the hospital in two days. But it was not to be.

For a brief period, he showed some improvement in his health condition and he had tested negative for coronavirus on September 4.

But on Thursday the hospital said his condition was extremely critical.

Since Thursday the indications about Balasubrahmanyam were not good.

On Thursday MGM Healthcare said the singer remains on ECMO and other life support systems.

“His condition in the last 24-hours has deteriorated further warranting maximal life support and he is extremely critical. The team of experts at MGM Healthcare is closely monitoring his health condition,” the hospital had said.

Since Friday morning a large number of police personnel were deployed outside the hospital.

The singer’s family members were all present at the hospital.

Famed director Bharathiraja, after visiting the iconic singer at the hospital, told the media at this time of grief he was not able to speak anything.

“Even now there is some ray of hope. There is one power above us all,” an emotional Bharathiraja said.

It was movie director Venkat Prabha who first tweeted about the singer’s death.

Prabhu tweeted “#RIPSPB 1:04 pm” announcing the sad news.

I don’t go into a game or tournament with huge expectations: KL Rahul

0

Kings XI Punjab captain KL Rahul, who scored a brilliant century and guided his team to a terrific win over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), believes the presence of head coach Anil Kumble has been a great motivation for all the players in the squad, especially the youngsters as they can learn a lot from the experience of the legendary spinner.

Against RCB on Thursday, Rahul played an unbeaten knock of 132 runs off just 69 balls, helping his team set a monstrous 207-run target which Kings XI defended successfully by bundling the Virat Kohli-led side for 109 in the 17th over.

During the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), one topic which has been discussed a lot has been the Karnataka connection between Rahul and Kumble and the 28-year-old feels it has worked in favor of the team.

“…It’s important that the coach and the captain are someone who the team enjoys having around. Somebody like Anil Kumble comes in with so much experience. He has captained a franchise, he has been a part of teams and he has been involved with the league (IPL) for so many years,” Rahul said on Amstrad InsideSport Face 2 Face cricket series.

“He understands exactly what the team goes through and what the players go through during these two months of IPL. He has been through it himself. He is now in a coaching job, it helps the team, and it helps a captain like me who is captaining the team for the first time to have his experience and someone like him to fall back on to bounce some ideas.”

“Furthermore, we come from the same city and he has watched me grow, it’s a huge help. He has been someone who has supported me and supported all the players from Karnataka. Just to have him around makes a huge difference for youngsters and for the guys who have been playing for a while because there is so much to learn from him,” the Kings XI skipper added.

He believes that managing his batting, captaincy, and wicket-keeping is as simple or hard as one wants it to be and that is the philosophy he goes by.

“For me, it has always been that I try to be in the moment, play one ball at a time whether in batting, captaincy or wicket keeping. I try to keep things simple. I am not a person who thinks too far ahead. I don’t go into a game or a tournament with huge expectations.

“For me it’s about enjoying each day and each opportunity and that’s the kind of mindset I want my players and my team to go with. I don’t want them to worry about what is going to happen in the 14th or 16th game whereas it’s about enjoying each opportunity and we are all fresh we could ever be.

“Everyone’s keen to go out there and create an impact. Every time we talk in the dressing room it is always about believing in the process and the preparation and just after that, come game time we have to believe that we have done everything we could do,” he added.

Commenting on the status of Chris Gayle, who still hasn’t played in IPL 2020, Rahul said: “Chris Gayle has been the biggest match-winner in T20 cricket and to not play a match-winner like Chris is a very hard decision for us.”

“The way he has come back after lockdown, the way he is batting, he is getting fitter and stronger by the day. He is striking the ball really well and some point in the tournament he will have a huge role to play,” he added.

Samsung on Friday launched its 2020 range of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered front-load washing machines with the latest Q-Rator technology that can be operated via a mobile app, compatible with both Android and iOS devices.

The 10-kg fully automatic front load model will be available at Rs 67,000 while the 10-kg washer dryer model will cost Rs 93,000.

The 7-Kg washer dryer will be available at Rs 45,590, the company said in a statement.

“The new AI-powered washing machines with the Q-Rator technology make laundry planning and its entire course convenient and seamless. Users can control the washing cycle and schedule via a mobile app,” Raju Pullan, Senior Vice President, Consumer Electronics Business, Samsung India, said in a statement.

The 10-kg fully automatic front load and 10-kg front load washer dryer models come integrated with AI-powered Laundry Assistant to manage and deliver perfect laundry in an efficient manner.

Q-Rator sports three unique features – Laundry Planner, Laundry Recipe, and HomeCare Wizard.

The Laundry Planner enables users to schedule the end time of their laundry while the Laundry Recipe gives automatic recommendations for optimal wash cycles based on the information such as color, fabric type, and degree of soiling inputted by the user, eliminating the need to guess which cycle is best.

“HomeCare Wizard proactively alerts users about potential problems and provides quick troubleshooting,” the company said.

Catering to the demand for smaller capacity washing machines that may be apt for a family of four, Samsung also expanded its line-up of washer dryers with a 7-kg model.

In addition, all new models of Q-Rator and fully automatic front-load washing machines come with Hygiene Steam technology that is capable of removing dirt and 99.9 percent of bacteria along with inactive allergens.

Samsung’s Eco Bubble technology uses a bubble generator to dissolve detergent into the water and then inject air, producing a rich soapy foam cushion.

According to Samsung, with less mechanical actions and bubble cushion, the technology protects clothes from getting damaged.

The new range will be available on Amazon, Flipkart, Samsung’s official online store Samsung Shop and channel partners, the company said.

Int’l cricket season in New Zealand gets green light from government

0

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has received permission from the government to host international matches later this summer, which includes series against Pakistan and West Indies.

“New Zealand Cricket has received government approval to proceed with plans to host international touring sides this summer beginning with the West Indies and Pakistan’s men’s teams in November, December, and January,” NZC said in a statement on Friday.

“Details of the upcoming summer’s schedule will be announced early next week,” the statement added.

The Black Caps’ international summer is slated to start with a tour by the West Indies (three T20Is, two Tests), then Pakistan (three T20Is, two Tests). The board is also hoping to host Bangladesh in limited-overs series as well as the Australian women’s team in February.

Meanwhile, the Black Caps’ tour of Australia, which consisted of three ODIs and a T20I slated to be played next January, has been postponed.

With no scheduled tours until a trip to play Pakistan next October, it means the Black Caps will go 18 months with no play outside New Zealand, dating back to March when the Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of their three-match ODI series against Australia after game one, according to a report in stuff.co.nz.

New Zealand has been one of the few countries in the world which have been successful at containing the spread of novel coronavirus, which has claimed more than nine lakh lives across the world so far.

Rakul, Deepika’s manager Karishma join NCB probe in drug case

A day after skipping the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Bollywood actor Rakul Preet Singh deposed before the drug law enforcement agency in a drug case related to the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone manager Karishma Prakash also deposed before the agency for questioning.

According to the NCB officials, Rakul was first to arrive at the NCB office followed by Karishma.

The development comes two days after the NCB summoned Deepika, Rakul, Shraddha Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan, and others.

On Thursday, NCB recorded the statement of Sushant’s former manager Shruti Modi and fashion designer Simone Khambatta.

NCB sources said that they all have been summoned after their names surfaced in WhatsApp chats accessed by the NCB and during the questioning of late Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty.

The source said that these celebrities will be questioned about how and from whom they procured drugs and whether they were meant for personal consumption or for someone else.

The source further said that while probing the link of the Kwan Talent Management Agency in the case, Deepika’s chats with Karishma surfaced. Karishma handled Deepika’s account at Kwan till 2017.

According to an NCB official, the names of Sara and Shraddha came up in two drug cases registered by the agency.

The official said that the NCB is presently investigating two separate cases that revolve around the drug cartel that is active in the tinsel town. The first case was registered on the directions of the top brass of the NCB after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) forwarded a brief note on Rhea and her brother Showik’s WhatsApp chats.

In its FIR number 15, the NCB claimed, “Analysis of WhatsApp chats of Rhea Chakraborty with other entities reflect the angle of conspiracy and abetment in possession, sale, purchase, consumption, transportation, and usage of substances covered under the NDPS Act.”

In the second case (FIR number 16), the NCB has so far arrested 19 persons, including Rhea and Showik.

The NCB has also recorded the statements of Kwan CEO Dhruv Chitgopekar, producer Madhu Mantena Varma and Sushant’s talent manager Jaya Saha.

Sushant was found dead in his Bandra apartment on June 14.

The ‘six inches’ that make the difference

0

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has had a wonderful start. This was just the entertainment for the bored and isolated Indians locked down in their homes for the last few months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. An evening of a ‘live’ episode of cricket drama saw 20 crore viewers watching the opening match of the tournament. This number will escalate as the people following the games get more information and a better insight into the teams and players involved.

The diversity where people and places are concerned in modern India has now extended in such a way that a cricketer follower’s loyalty to one’s hometown is not the only criterion to cheer a team. The IPL has made cricket into a family drama where the young and the old have their own thoughts and views. This is sole because the T20 format has so many variants and uncertainties that predicting a result or performance is like a game of dice. This is what makes the shortest version of the game exciting and mesmerizing.

Cricket has always been a sport that one has associated with one “that is played a lot between the ears”. These six inches make the difference. The traditional game of cricket is a slow five-day affair in which one has time to implement or construct one’s strategy. A batsman of the calibre of Sachin Tendulkar could decide not to play a cover drive and still make a double century and a bowler like Glenn McGrath or James Anderson could pester a batsman the whole day bowling outside the off-stump to frustrate him into finally succumbing to the plot. The great Sunil Gavaskar, Rahul Dravid, or the present-day patient executioner Cheteshwar Pujara’s strategy of grinding the bowlers and then gradually getting the better of them was possible because of the way they could mentally tune themselves to the traditional format of the game.

The T20, on the other hand, has made the task of the bowler and the batsman far more difficult, as the time that one had earlier to plan and execute has now shortened significantly. Although teams now have cricket as well as mental coaches and analysts as part of the entourage, the initial IPL matches in the UAE have shown that cricketers need far more training in the development of their thought and mental process.

Earlier, one never acknowledged the importance of the mental aspect of the game, as patience and self-restraint carried one through one’s problematic phase. This, unfortunately, is not possible in the T20 format today as the cricketer does not get enough time to re-evaluate and deliver.

A good example of this was Mayank Agarwal when he played a gem of an innings and brought his team to the brink of victory. With just one run to get off three balls and him batting on 89, he was caught off a full toss to the only fielder placed deep in the cover boundary. It was unpardonable. His mind was all set to make a grand finish rather than ensuring a certain victory, which he could have achieved quite easily. One feels sorry to put the entire blame on him, as the team would not have been in such a position had it not been for his efforts. But in the end, the result is what counted. He failed mentally to finish the task.

All eight participating teams depend a lot on their foreign and Indian international players. However, the differential factor between winning and losing at most times has been the performance of the young Indian domestic players. They are the weak link in a star-studded franchise and the ones who can be vulnerable mentally.

The super performance of one of India’s rising stars for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Devdutt Padikkal who, quite understandably, was nervous playing his first IPL match and for him to get over his nerves showed his resilience. Nerves played an enormous part in the dismissal of Chennai’s Ruturaj Gaekwad, and he was out stumped by yards on the very first ball he faced in the game against Rajasthan Royals.

Similarly, Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young exciting talent from Mumbai representing Rajasthan, was a victim of his mental approach, not due to a lack of cricketing skills. Both youngsters are prime examples of players who need to be coached to become stronger mentally, as one knows that they have the capabilities vis-a-vis cricketing skills.

On the other hand, bowlers have an even more difficult task due to field restrictions. The seasoned bowlers are now mature enough to take the ups and downs they confront every time they bowl in a T20 match. But one still gets frustrated watching some of them not using their mind astutely. The thought of buying a wicket, as performances are calculated on the basis of wickets taken rather than on the runs conceded, could be one of the factors impacting in their thought process.

One feels the bowlers, especially the youngsters, need to go through many sessions of mental coaching. The T20 is predominantly a batsman’s game, and depression and failure affect young bowlers, and that is quite disturbing. A bowler needs to adapt to the conditions very quickly in a T20 match as he has just four overs to bowl, which he usually does in two spells. In these few overs, getting the perfect length, speed and direction is quite a difficult task, especially for a young debutant.

However, bowlers do have their moments of success as well, even when they have faltered in execution. The other day, two rank punishable full tosses by Delhi Capitals’ Marcus Stoinis off his last two balls of an over against Kings XI Punjab got him two wickets to make him into a hero. He, too, had faltered mentally but ended up on the winning side. This element of luck will put him in a positive frame of mind whereas both batsmen who got out will need counseling.

This is where the famous quote by the great tennis player Martina Navratilova is so appropriate: “Every game in life is actually played on a six inches ground – the space between the two ears.”

Google Pay denies sharing Indian users’ data with 3rd parties

0

Google on Friday denied the claims made in certain media reports that its Google Pay app is sharing Indian customers’ transaction data with third parties.

Citing an affidavit filed before a bench of Chief Justice D.N. Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan in Delhi High Court, a section of the media said that Google has told the court that it is allowed to share customers transaction data with third parties with the prior permission of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and payment service providing (PSP) banks.

The affidavit was filed in response to public interest litigation (PIL) seeking action against Google Pay for allegedly violating the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines related to data storage and sharing.

“This is to clarify that press reports on the basis of the affidavit filed by Google before the Delhi High Court, do not represent the complete facts,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

“We would like to put it on record that Google Pay is in full compliance with Unified Payment Interface (UPI) procedural guidelines, issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the applicable laws and does not share customer transaction data with any third party outside the payments flow,” the company spokesperson added.

The high court has listed the matter for hearing on November 10.

Earlier this week, Google Pay in collaboration with Visa and banking partners rolled out tokenization across its platform, enabling users to safely transact with their cards and use the Tap-to-pay feature on near-field communication (NFC)-enabled point of sale (POS) terminals and online merchants.

The feature is now available to users of Axis and SBI Card, with Kotak and more banks expected to follow suit very soon.

With tokenization, Google Pay Android users can use their debit or credit card to make payments through a secure digital token attached to their phone without having to physically share their credit or debit card details.

Apple iOS 14 update fixes default browser settings bug

0

Apple has released iOS 14.0.1, the first update to the new iOS 14 operating system that addresses several issues that were left unpatched in the initial launch.

One can now set a third-party browser or mail app as default on their iPhone, but a bug was causing those settings to be reverted every time the iPhone restarted.

This issue has been resolved in iOS 14.0.1 so the users do not have to keep changing default apps going forward.

The update also addresses bugs that were stopping iPhones from connecting to WiFi networks, preventing some apps from sending emails, and preventing images from showing up in the News widget, the Cupertino-based tech giant said in a release note on Thursday.

The iOS 14 update addresses an issue that could prevent camera previews from displaying on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

It has also fixed another bug that could prevent images from appearing in the News widget.

The iOS 14.0.1 update is available on all eligible devices over-the-air in the Settings app.

According to the mobile analytics research firm Mixpanel, the Apple iOS 14 adoption surpassed 25 percent of active iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices in just five days after release.

Apple has brought iOS 14 as a free software update to iPhone 6s and later, delivering a major push to the Home Screen with beautifully redesigned widgets and the App Library, new ways to use apps with App Clips, and powerful updates to Messages.

Realme’s 55-inch TV with superior SLED screen in India next month

0

Realme is all set to launch its first 55-inch TV in the first half of October in India which will come with an industry-leading and eye-friendly SLED screen.

According to industry sources, the 55-inch Realme smart TV will also support the latest Dolby Audio solution to bring more interesting, rich audio quality to TV sound.

With Dolby Audio, Realme smart TV can split and play sound in discrete channels from the front, side and rear sides to create a surround sound effect and bring an immersive experience, the sources told IANS on Friday.

The SLED display technology is co-developed by Realme and John Rooymans, chief scientist of SPD Technology (Spectral Power Distribution).

Adopting leading SPD technology for TV blacklight, the Realme TV will have a super ultra-wide colour gamut and eye-care with low blue light.

While most LED TVs including QLED use only a blue backlight which is then turned to white, SLED uses Red, Green, and Blue (RGB) LED light for the initial stage, hence reducing the harmful effects of blue light and providing higher color purity.

The white backlight formed from RGB offers a high ability of color representation, achieving more notable wider color gamut and eye protection than QLED.

Comparing it to a regular LED TV which has a colour gamut of only 72 percent NTSC, SLED offers an NTSC colour gamut up to 108 percent.

With the RGB-powered backlight, SLED is also healthier for the eyes. The lesser the blue light, the healthier your eye would be.

In an impetus to the Make in India initiative, Realme has started 100 percent TV production at its Greater Noida facility.

Realme kicked off the surface-mount technology (SMT) production in May for its affordable smart TVs.

The Realme Smart TVs are available in two sizes – a 32-inch model and a 43-inch variant.

Microsoft and Telstra partner to harness next-gen Cloud, IoT

Microsoft and Australia’s leading telecommunications company Telstra have extended their long-standing strategic partnership to harness new-age Internet of Things (IoT), Edge, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital twin technologies.

Telstra and Microsoft will build a digital twin across its own commercial buildings with an initial deployment of five buildings.

When fully deployed, this represents one of the largest Azure-based digital twins in Australia.

Once complete, the digital twin will allow Telstra to establish a digital nerve center that promises enhanced transparency by modernizing business processes and the work environment, enhancing digital interaction between personnel, and enabling Telstra to improve operational efficiency.

Combining Microsoft Azure and Telstra’s network also supports Australian developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) as they develop solutions that leverage AI, low latency, and increased resilience, the companies said in a statement.

“The announcement with Microsoft formalizes the several streams of work we are already collaborating on. The global scale of Microsoft’s platform, tools, and applications, together with Telstra’s network solutions, reliability, and leadership, will drive new and unique solutions for Australia,” said Telstra CEO Andrew Penn.

Telstra is working with Microsoft Azure as its preferred cloud provider for ongoing internal digital transformation.

Azure will provide the digital foundations for Telstra’s strategic plan to streamline and simplify operations, transitioning from legacy and on-premise applications to modern cloud-based solutions.

“The broad adoption of cloud and 5G technology will create new opportunities for businesses worldwide, including in Australia,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft.

“We’re expanding our partnership with Telstra and bringing together the power of Azure and Telstra’s network to build new solutions in critical areas like asset tracking, supply-chain management, and smart spaces, harnessing the latest advances in AI, digital twins, and mixed reality”.
