Sharif to virtually participate in multiparty conference

0

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who is currently in London for treatment, will virtually attend the opposition-led multiparty conference (MPC) scheduled to be held on Sunday.

Soon after Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairperson, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari tweeted that he telephoned Sharif in London to invite him to attend the MPC online, sources told Dawn news that the former leader would attend the conference.

“Just spoke to Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif. Enquired about his health. Also invited him to virtually attend opposition APC, hosted by PPP, on 20th September,” Bhutto-Zardari said in his tweet.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz thanked the PPP chair for inviting her father to attend the conference. She will also be in attendance.

The opposition parties decided to MPC as they want to formulate a strategy against the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government over bad governance, sugar and wheat scandals, and inflation, Dawn news reported.

Talking to the media, PPP secretary general Syed Nayyar Husain Bukhari said the party had finalized the agenda of the MPC and two-year performance of the government and future political strategy would be on the agenda.

He said that the PPP leadership had sought recommendations from other opposition parties to finalize the agenda.

Russia ready to work with new US Prez: FM Lavrov

0

Russia is ready to work with the winner of the forthcoming US presidential election, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said here.

“We will work with any government that takes office in any country, including the US. But we will talk with Washington on all issues of interest solely on the basis of equality, mutual benefit, and the search for a balance of interests,” Xinhua news agency quoted Lavrov as saying in an interview to Sputnik on Friday.

“Talking to us with ultimatums is pointless and useless. If someone has not yet understood this, then these are worthless politicians,” he added.

He recalled that under former President Barack Obama, Russia was first accused of interference in the internal affairs of the United States, which was used as a pretext for imposing sanctions, including a “raider seizure of Russian property in the US, the expulsion of dozens of our diplomats with their families and much more”.

Lavrov said the issue of Russia’s alleged interference in the US’ internal affairs still occupies one of the dominant places in Washington’s policy.

Nepal to resume railway services after 7-yr suspension

0

Nepal has planned to resume passenger railway services after a 7-year suspension as two sets of rails that Kathmandu purchased from India have arrived in Janakpur city.

“The Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit rail sets arrived at Janakpur at around 1.40 p.m. on Friday,” Balram Mishra, director general at the Department of Railway told Xinhua news agency.

The Railway Department said that it would take at least one and a half months to restart the services as it was currently working to recruit necessary human resources.

It will be the country’s first-ever broad-gauge passenger railway service.

The service will start from Kurtha, an area close to Janakpur town to Jayanagar, a town bordering India, and the distance is around 35 km, according to the Department.

There was an operation of Janakpur-Jaynagar railway service in the past but on a narrow-gauge line, and the service completely halted seven years ago.

In order to resume railway service, the Department planned to recruit over 200 staff gradually.

“Initially, we will resume service with the help of Indian technical staff,” said Mishra.

“We are hiring 26 Indian staff mostly from technical backgrounds in the areas of driving, maintenance, signaling, and track engineering to start the service.”

He said that the Indian workforce would gradually be replaced once Nepali human resources are trained properly and adequately.

According to the Department, each rail set can accommodate around 1,300 passengers with a maximum speed of 110 km per hour, and it can be operated from both sides.

“It is appropriate for operating inter-city services and for middle distance,” said Mishra.

The government is also planning to develop a number of railways that would link the country from all four directions.

The railway track is being laid to operate east-west electric railway service.

Nepal has signed an agreement with both China and India to link the capital city Kathmandu with both countries’ borders.

Liverpool complete signing of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich

0

Liverpool FC has completed a deal for the permanent transfer of mid-fielder Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

The Spain international has put pen to paper on a long-term contract with the Reds and becomes the club’s second signing of the transfer window, following Kostas Tsimikas in August, the club said in a statement.

“I think it’s an amazing feeling. I was waiting for this moment for a long time and I am very, very happy to be here,” Thiago told the official Liverpool FC website.

“When the years are passing, you are trying to win as much as you can – and when you win, you want to win more. I think this club describes what I am as well; I want to achieve all of the goals, win as many trophies as possible,” he added.

Alcantara moves to Anfield fresh from helping Bayern clinch a treble as they won the Bundesliga, German Cup, and Champions League in 2019-20, during which he featured 40 times.

The 29-year-old, who also has 39 caps for Spain, spent seven seasons at the Allianz Arena having transferred to Germany from Barcelona, where he began his career.

In total, Thiago has won nine league titles, two Champions Leagues, and two FIFA Club World Cups with his respective previous teams.

Can ignoring old loyalists hurt BJP in Bihar?

0

Ahead of Bihar polls, key officials with just two to five years’ history in the party have been made team leaders in the state organization. This may backfire for the Bharatiya Janata Party as old loyalists associated with it for 30 to 40 years have been asked to play second fiddle.

IANS managed to obtain the list of the organizational structure of BJP in Bihar wherein the majority of leaders holding top posts “have joined just 2 to five years ago”.

Sources have said that such random appointments may hurt the morale of old loyalists, who being strongly connected with grass-root workers and actual voters of the party have the capacity to bring numbers to polling booths.

“Despite Bihar having come a long way on the development scale, votes here are actually cast on the basis of caste.

“If we entirely depend on our Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, I believe, it would not be the right approach. We have to include all sections of the people to succeed in these elections,” a party leader said requesting anonymity.

“Ignoring old loyalists may have huge consequences like India Shining and Bharat Uday campaign of 2004 parliamentary election when NDA lost elections to the Congress. We have to learn our lessons from the past and avoid making such mistakes. It is in the interest of the party,” he said.

IANS spoke to a few more old loyalists who, however, expressed slightly different views and said that it was up to the party to decide the role of a particular official.

“The party’s think tank is in a better position to observe the working style of a particular person. I was state media cell in-charge earlier and was shifted into the district executive committee and I am happy whatever assignment I have been given from the party,” Rajiv Kumar said.

Tarkeshwar Pandey, the state advocate forum chief concurs with Rajiv Kumar’s view: “Party top leadership is used to reshuffling officials from time to time. The exercise is an attempt to obtain a better result. There is no harm in it. We as party workers should be ready for any assignment.”

Nikhil Anand, the chief spokesperson of BJP Bihar unit said: “BJP has grown up over the years to get the status of the largest party in the world. It has only been possible through organizational strength.

“We have a huge force of selfless workers and the party knows how to place them for gaining a maximum result. If that had not been the case, people like J.P. Nadda, who was a booth president of the party in Patna, would not have become national president.

“Our PM Narendra Modiji is also an example of it. He was a Swayamsewak of RSS and worked at the ground level, now he has reached the height from Chief Minister to Prime Minister.”

“BJP is not like a party that believes in carrying forward legacies or dynasties. With the passage of time, a generational shift is obvious in this party.”

“Organisation and ideology is our strength and any worker given responsibility in the party has a certain ability, experience, and commitment. Without these basic parameters, no one would be given responsibility. The transformation is happening within the party very smoothly without creating any conflict,” Anand said.

“On the other hand, during Rastriya Janata Dal (RJD) regime, they talked of caste and social justice but their social justice was based on conflict of castes. They have created a fragmented society where dynastic politics in the shape of Tejashwi Yadav, Tej Pratap Yadav, Misa Bharti are being promoted.

“Our social justice is a perspective of community development wherein general category, OBC, EBC, Dalits, Mahadalits have a stake in it,” Anand said.

“There is a perception that the BJP belongs to upper caste in Bihar but our state president Sanjay Jaiswal is a Bania (Trader) by caste so is Sushil Kumar Modi, the deputy chief minister.

“Nand Kishor Yadav, road development minister belongs to OBC, Prem Kumar belongs to OBC holding agriculture ministry portfolio. These are an indication that BJP belongs to all caste and community,” Anand said.

The political experts believe that it is an image-building effort that is being done by all parties. For RJD, Jagadanad Singh who is the state president of the party belongs to the Bhumihar caste.

The simple reason for all this is to earn the votes of the upper castes. Stalwart Samajwadi leader late Raghuvansh Prasad Singh who stayed in RJD for 32 years was a Rajput. RJD has an image of the Muslim-Yadav party and follows MY equation. Lately, it has also focused on the BB formula (Bhumihar-Brahmin) in the state.

In Congress, Madan Mohan Jha is a Maithili Brahmin while Congress has an image of the OBC caste in Bihar.

The huge response in terms of the number of applications we have received through the open application system has been very overwhelming. I wish the new technical officials all the very best for their career.”

Nepal Covid-19 cases top 61k with record high daily spike

0

The overall Covid-19 cases in Nepal has increased to 61,653 after the Himalayan country reported a record-high spike in the number of single-day infections, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.

“The coronavirus cases reached 61,593 on Friday with 2,020 new cases confirmed in the last 24 hours,” Ministry spokesman Jageshwor Gautam said at a regular press briefing.

It is for the first time that the daily infection rate crossed over 2,000, reports Xinhua news agency.

Last record high cases were reported on September 16 when the Himalayan country had confirmed 1,539 new cases.

The spike was reported after Nepal on Thursday restarted long-haul public transportation services, domestic flights and also reopened hotels and restaurants.

The government has also relaxed the provision of reopening shops.

Although confirmed cases were on a decline after early July, they resurged after the government lifted the lockdown starting from July 22.

“The cases in major urban centers including in capital Kathmandu Valley, Pokhara and other thick settlements in the southern region of the country, are rising rapidly,” said Gautam.

“The situation is worsening day by day.”

Amid rising cases, health ministry officials said that total cases could reach up to 90,000 in the worst-case scenario.

According to the Health Ministry, the death rate is also growing in Nepal.

As of Friday, the death toll reached 390.

On May 16, Nepal had reported the first death from the pandemic, a 29-year-old woman.

Until July 21, total deaths from the pandemic were 40 but the number of deaths soared after the lockdown was lifted.

Guatemalan President tests Covid-19 positive

0

Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the government said in a statement.

The statement issued on Friday said that Giammattei, 64, underwent a Covid-19 test for the sixth time and was declared positive, reports Xinhua news agency.

The Office of the President stated that the head of state was currently undergoing medical monitoring and evaluation.

“The President will continue with his activities and will work for the benefit of the country, and will do so by taking the necessary measures to safeguard his health.

“In addition, he will be isolating himself from all public activity, so all communication will be done remotely,” the Office added.

The Guatemalan government also said that the President’s case is a further sign of the highly contagious nature of the virus and that citizens should continue to follow preventive health measures such as mask-wearing, hand washing, and social distancing.

The announcement came the same day that the country reopened its borders and international flights.

Guatemala had closed its airports and borders with Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador in March.

The Health Ministry has said that travelers wanting to come to Guatemala will be required to provide a negative coronavirus test.

According to the Ministry, Guatemala has registered a total of 84,344 cases and 3,076 deaths to date.

Al-Qaeda men nabbed from Kochi, rented homes during lockdown

0

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday busted an inter-state module of Al Qaeda operatives as it conducted raids in West Bengal and Kerala on Saturday morning. Three of the nine Qaeda men were arrested from Ernakulam district.

Kerala Police chief Lokanath Behera confirmed the arrests from Ernakulam that has the highest migrant laborers population in the state. The three were picked from two places in Kochi. Those arrested are Murshid Hassan, Yakoob Bishwas, and Morshraf Hussien.

Kerala Police has found out that Hussien was in Kerala for the past decade and was working in a textile shop at Perumbavoor, near Aluva.

Speaking to the media, a person who was staying with Murshid Hassan said the police came around 2 a.m. and arrested Hassan and also recovered incriminating materials including digital devices, documents, jihadi literature.

“It was during the national lockdown, he started to stay with us. Generally, he used to work only for two days a week, and the rest of the time, he was in the room. We do not know details of him or his family,” said the person who was his roommate.

Police have now taken away the mobile of all those staying with Hassan and have asked them to report at the NIA office.

According to the anti-terror probe agency officials in Delhi, the arrests were made after raids in West Bengal’s Murshidabad, from where six people have been arrested.

The NIA spokesperson said that the agency carried out simultaneous raids at several locations in Ernakulam and Murshidabad after learning about the inter-state terror module operational from various locations in India.

“The group was planning to undertake terrorist attacks at vital installations in India with an aim to kill innocent people and strike terror in their minds,” the spokesperson said, adding that it has registered a case on September 11.

Sharp weapons, country-made firearms, a locally fabricated body armor, articles, and literature used for making home-made explosive devices have been seized from their possession.

Those arrested in Kerala are presently under the custody of NIA officials and later in the day they would be produced before a special NIA court here and after that, they would be moved to Delhi.

Vidyut Jammwal: People should talk of kalaripayattu, the Indian martial art

Bollywood action star Vidyut Jammwal says his vision is to popularise the indigenous martial art kalaripayattu through Indian cinema.

Vidyut is a trained martial artiste and has learnt kalaripayattu since the age of three.

“I don’t have a vision yet about how it should be presented, but my vision for Indian cinema is that people should talk about kalaripayattu, the martial art. It is an original Indian martial art,” Vidyut told IANS.

“When I go and pursue an award from Jackie Chan, and when they talk of kalaripayattu, the Indian martial art, I feel proud. My vision for Indian action cinema worldwide is that we need to present this,” he said about popularising kalaripayattu on screen.

Vidyut, who rose to fame with the “Commando” franchise of films, notes many things that are popular globally today actually originated in India.

“When I lie down on spears, they say, ‘Shaolin monks bhi karte hain (Shaolin monks also do this)’. Shaolin monks isliye karte hain (Shaolin Monks do it) because they learned it from an Indian guy called Bodhidharma. I just want everybody to be aware. People should know that martial arts is an Indian skill, and that’s my vision,” he said.

The actor was recently seen in the digitally released film, “Khuda Haafiz”. He will next be seen in the film’s second chapter.

Shweta Tripathi: No one is forcefully putting drugs in our mouths!

Actress Shweta Tripathi says the claim by Kangana Ranaut that 99 percent of Bollywood is on drugs is an incorrect generalization, adding that such an assertion is a half-truth.

The “Masaan” fame actress, who impressed in recent digital releases such as “Cargo” and “The Gone Game”, also said that Kangana’s allusion that actresses had to sleep around to get work and that outsiders make space in the “big bad world of cinema” only after compromising, would make for an interesting script, but that’s not how Bollywood functioned.

“I think narratives doing the rounds that half of the people of the film industry are drug addicts, that female actresses are sleeping around to get work, and outsiders can make their space in the ‘big bad world of cinema’ only after compromising make for great and interesting scripts. No, that is not how we work here in Bollywood,” Shweta told IANS.

“Trust me when I say this, no one is forcefully putting drugs in our mouths! If a youngster wants to get into drugs, they will do it anyway — whether in Mumbai or in any small town of the country. It has nothing to do with the city of Mumbai. I want to tell all parents it is important to keep a check on the upbringing of their children, with the moral compass in the right direction, as well as their mental health,” she added.

“I think when we pack our bags and come to Mumbai, our parents should ask if we are fine instead of telling to give up on the initial struggle that we all go through. If we are constantly asked about how much money we earn and are told that our struggle is nothing but a waste of time, it really creates a different kind of mental pressure on any budding talent. It is not about consuming drugs. It is about the issues they face, which in turn lead them into the world of darkness and addiction, and mental health issues. I think that should be addressed, instead of defaming an industry,” the actress pointed out.

Over the past few weeks, several female personalities in the film industry have raised their voice against the negativity being spread around Bollywood. These include actresses Jaya Bachchan, Hema Malini, Vidya Balan, Urmila Matondkar, Taapsee Pannu, and singer Sona Mohapatra.

Realme 7: Fast charging, good overall performance

0

In a bid to make further inroads into the mid-segment market share in India, Realme has left no stone unturned to date. With the recent launch of its 7 series smartphones, the company has brought some more competition in the hot-selling segment.

The young sibling Realme 7 comes in two variants — 6GB+64GB priced at Rs 14,999 and 8GB+128GB priced at Rs 16,999 — available in beautiful mirror design in Mist White and Mist Blue colors.

We reviewed (8GB+128GB) Mist White variant for a few days. Let’s see how it fares.

The Realme 7 features a 6.5-inch 90Hz Ultra Smooth Display with a 90Hz refresh rate and 120Hz sampling rate. It also houses a quad-camera set-up at the rear side.

The smartphone comes with a massive 5000mAh battery with 30W Dart Charge support — which fully charged the device in about an hour.

The handset is equipped with three-card slots — two SIM cards and one SD card (up to 256GB).

The reason why Realme 7 can be the right choice for the mid-segment users is that it offers a massive 5000mAh battery for Rs 14,999 while POCO X2 which costs 15,999 house a 4,500mAh battery and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max which comes with a 5,020mAh battery is available at a starting price of Rs 16,499.

Not just battery, when it comes to design and outlook, this Realme smartphone has a unique and premium look.

The device has a rectangular quad-camera setup along with an LED flash at the rear top left corner.

It features an advanced 64MP main camera with a Sony IMX682 sensor, 8MP Ultra wide-angle lens, and f/2.3 aperture with the 119-degree field of view for capturing images, 2MP B&W Portrait lens, and 2MP Macro lens that helped take close-up pictures.

When it comes to images, the device produced good and detailed images.

However, the shots captured in the low-light conditions in normal settings were nowhere outstanding when compared to other smartphones in the similar price range.

The videos recorded during the daytime were good and just about normal in low light conditions.

Realme 7 houses the power button with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and has a dedicated space for SIM-tray on the right side, while the volume keys are on the left side.

At the bottom, the smartphone has a USB Type-C charging port, speaker along with a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Realme 7 comes with a 6.5-inch Super 90Hz Ultra Smooth Display with 90Hz refresh rate and 120Hz sampling rate 1080×2400 pixels resolution with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 90.8 percent screen-to-body ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

On the front, the device houses a 16MP selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture, Sony IMX471 sensor, which is placed at the top left corner of the screen.

While taking pictures from the front camera, the selfies came out well but weren’t sharp enough.

The overall camera experience was decent.

Another USP is the latest MediaTek Helio G95 SoC Gaming Processor, which is exclusively designed to be the core of smartphone gaming experience.

The smartphone housing Realme’s own UI runs Android 10. The device worked smoothly and didn’t lag during regular usage.

The device lasted for over a day on a single charge and took around only one hour to get a 100 percent battery.

Users can play heavy games in HD settings without any glitch. We played Asphalt 9: Legends and Call of Duty Mobile and the overall performance were good.

Conclusion: Mid-segment Realme 7 has many premium features. With the massive battery and stunning design, it suits both the young and the adults.

Google Drive to delete trashed files after 30 days from Oct 13

0

Just like Gmail, Google will now keep your trashed files in its Drive platform for only 30 days and start deleting those once the deadline is crossed, starting October 13.

Currently, Google Drive keeps all files, including the trashed ones, indefinitely.

“Starting October 13, 2020, we’re changing the retention policies for items in the Trash in Google Drive. With this new policy, any file that is put into a Google Drive trash will be automatically deleted after 30 days,” Google said in a statement.

Previously, trashed items would be retained indefinitely until the trash was emptied by the user.

“Any files already in a user’s trash on October 13, 2020, will remain there for 30 days. After the 30-day period, files that have been in the trash for longer than 30 days will begin to be automatically deleted,” Google added.

This change matches the policies of other G Suite products and services, such as Gmail.

According to the company, this will help ensure behavior is consistent and predictable for users across G Suite products and will help make sure that items users trash is actually deleted as expected.

As this policy takes effect, Google will show a banner to users with details of the change.

“The policy change will take effect regardless of whether a user sees or acknowledges the banner. We will be showing in-app notifications in Drive and in our Editors products (Google Docs and Google Forms) starting September 29,” Google informed.

Admins can still restore items deleted from a user’s trash for up to 25 days for active users.

“Files in shared drives’ trash are already automatically deleted after 30 days. Items in the trash will still continue to consume quota,” Google said.

Kids need FB account to play Oculus VR games, parents furious

0

The decision by the social networking giant to make it mandatory for users of its Oculus Quest virtual reality (VR) headset to have a Facebook account has put parents in a bind.

Parents have slammed Facebook for the change in rules as kids who play the Oculus VR games will soon need to have a Facebook account, reports USA Today.

Facebook said the new change becomes effective in October, but people can continue using their Oculus accounts until January 1, 2023.

“Giving people a single way to log into Oculus – using their Facebook account and password – will make it easier to find, connect, and play with friends in VR,” the company said.

“It really touched a nerve, and I feel very resentful towards Facebook,” Stacey Luchs, whose 13-year-old son has been asking for Oculus for years, was quoted as saying.

“My son is not ready for social media, because of what it brings,” she added.

Kids and young adults are the target audience for Oculus games and Facebook’s rules put a minimum age of 13 to qualify for an account.

One option for parents is to create a new account, under their name, which they can share with their kids.

“For example you might be Monique Smith on Facebook, but WarriorMama365 in VR,” Facebook said on its FAQ page.

The company this week launched Oculus Quest 2, its next generation of all-in-one virtual reality headset that starts at $299.

Weighing less than the original Quest, it comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform processor and 6GB memory.

The headset offers newly redesigned controllers for better ergonomics and longer battery life, the social network said during its virtual ‘Facebook Connect’ conference.

TikTok says disappointed with US move to ban app from Sunday

0

Video-sharing social networking platform TikTok said it felt disappointed with the decision announced by the US Commerce Department blocking the download and update of the company’s popular application starting Sunday.

“We disagree with the decision from the Commerce Department, and are disappointed that it stands to block new app downloads from Sunday and ban use of the TikTok app in the US from November 12,” a TikTok representative said in a statement acquired by Xinhua.

“Our community of 100 million U.S. users loves TikTok because it’s a home for entertainment, self-expression, and connection,” the Los Angeles-based tech company said, “and we’re committed to protecting their privacy and safety as we continue working to bring joy to families and meaningful careers to those who create on our platform.”

The US Commerce Department said on Friday that as of Sunday, any moves to distribute or maintain TikTok on app stores such as Apple App Store and Google Play Store will be prohibited, and a more extensive ban against the app would be applied from November 12.

TikTok’s users who have already downloaded the app may continue using it, but they will not be able to download updated versions from Sunday.

According to the company, as of June, the total number of TikTok’s monthly active users in the country soared to 91,937,040, and based on quarterly usage, 100 million Americans used the app.

Meanwhile, the White House was reported weighing a proposal raised by TikTok, which the company believes “would resolve the Administration’s security concerns.” Oracle confirmed earlier this week that it reached a deal with TikTok’s Chinese parent, ByteDance, to be the latter’s U.S. trusted partner.

So far, no details about the proposal have been exposed.

US President Donald Trump and some politicians have repeatedly expressed speculation that TikTok poses a national security threat to the country, though no evidence has been provided to support the allegations.

On August 6, Trump issued an executive order banning US transactions with ByteDance, citing the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The ban will take effect on September 20.

On August 14, he signed a second executive order that will force ByteDance to sell or spin off its U.S. TikTok business within 90 days.

Tour de France: Soren Kragh Andersen wins again on Stage 19

0

It was a double delight for Denmark’s Soren Kragh Andersen in the ongoing Tour de France after the Sunweb rider soloed clear of a select move to take a second victory in Stage 19 at Champagnole.

Sam Bennett all but secured the green jersey while there was no change at the top as Primoz Roglic retained the yellow jersey on Friday.

Kragh Andersen picked up his second Tour stage win in a week with an emphatic solo victory from a strong 12-man break after the rolling 166.5km stage into the Jura.

The Danish powerhouse surged clear of a move containing green jersey rivals Bennett, Peter Sagan, and Matteo Trentin with 15kms remaining. With the chasers unable to join forces behind, the 26-year-old held on to secure his Sunweb team’s third victory of the race.

Just as what happened in Stage 14 to Lyon, Slovenia’s Luka Mezgec won the sprint for second place. The Mitchelton-Scott sprinter led home a Belgian trio of Jasper Stuyven, Greg van Avermaet, and Oliver Naesen, with Kragh Andersen’s teammate Nikias Arndt completing that group 53 seconds down and just ahead of Welshman Luke Rowe.

While Trentin (CCC Team) had made the attack which pre-empted Kragh Andersen’s decisive move, the Italian came home behind Ireland’s Bennett (Deceuninck-QuickStep) and Slovakia’s Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) one minute in arrears after the trio marked each other out in the battle for green.

Bennett’s eighth-place means he extends his lead over both Sagan and Trentin in the points classification, effectively ending Sagan’s forlorn quest to win an eighth green jersey in Paris. Barring disaster, Bennett will become the first Irishman since Sean Kelly in 1989 to win the Tour’s fabled green jersey.

Behind, the peloton soft-pedaled to the line to finish almost eight minutes adrift as the GC favorites accepted a ceasefire ahead of the penultimate day’s time trial on Saturday. Slovenia’s Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) will enter the decisive 36.2km race against the clock with a 57-second lead over compatriot Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), with Colombia’s Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) a further 30 seconds back in third.

Italian Open: Djokovic, Nadal enter quarter-finals

Top seeds Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have entered the quarterfinals of the Italian Open with straight-set wins in their respective third-round matches.

On Friday, Djokovic defeated his fellow Serb Filip Krajinovic 7-6 (7), 6-3 to enter the last eight of the tournament for the 14th straight year.

“It was definitely one of the longest sets I think I have ever played,” said Djokovic as per the ATP Tour website after the match. “Never easy, I think, emotionally to play against someone that is one of my best friends for many years…I think the first set could have gone a different way, as well.

“Fortunately for me, it went my way and that allowed me to swing through the ball a bit more in the second set. Maybe physically and mentally, he dropped a level and I used my opportunities and capitalized to win in straight sets.”

In other Round of 16 matches, nine-time champion Nadal cruised past 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters finalist Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 6-3 to reach his 15th Rome quarter-final.

“I played at I think a very positive level of tennis. Of course, it needs to keep improving. I need to keep working on a couple of things that are not coming automatically. But I can’t ask for more,” Nadal said. “(It was) another great evening for me against another good opponent. Can’t complain at all. Much better (than) what I expected.”

Lorenzo Musetti, 18, who had upset three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and Japan’s top player Kei Nishikori in the tournament’s opening two rounds, lost to Dominik Koepfer of Germany 6-4, 6-0.

Fourth-seeded Matteo Berrettini defeated Stefano Travaglia 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1) in an all-Italian contest to reach the last eight.

In the women’s draw, top-seed Simona Halep beat Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska 7-5, 6-4. Second seed Karolina Pliskova registered a 6-4, 6-3 win over Russia’s Anna Blinkova.

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka advanced to the quarterfinals as her opponent Darya Kasatkina of Russia retired during the first set with the scores at 6-6. Ninth-seeded Garbine Muguruza eased into the final eight as she Johanna Konta of Great Britain 6-4, 6-1.
